<strong>AIDS</strong> COUNCIL IN THE NEWS<br />
The <strong>AIDS</strong> <strong>Council</strong> received sustained local media coverage during the<br />
<strong>2009</strong>-<strong>2010</strong> fiscal year, thanks to the increased visibility and attendance at the<br />
Beaujolais Nouveau Wine Celebration and Dining Out for Life® events, as well as<br />
events related to the launch of the PSA, The Price Is Your Life. The <strong>AIDS</strong> <strong>Council</strong><br />
also continued to serve as a media go-to source for information and opinion<br />
about HIV/<strong>AIDS</strong> and STDs throughout the year. In addition to receiving coverage<br />
in print, online, radio, and television – available for viewing on our website – the<br />
<strong>AIDS</strong> <strong>Council</strong> also received several awards, including the Capital District Gay<br />
& Lesbian Community <strong>Council</strong>’s Organization of the Year Award, a prestigious<br />
Empire Award from the Public Relations Society of America’s Capital Region<br />
Chapter for the agency’s 2008 World <strong>AIDS</strong> Day event, and a <strong>2009</strong> Best Places to<br />
Work Award from The Business Review.<br />
In honor of World <strong>AIDS</strong> Day on December 1, <strong>2009</strong>, the agency launched its<br />
brand-new teen-created campaign and website, www.thepriceisyourlife.com,<br />
at a press conference at the agency’s Albany office. The press conference received<br />
coverage on ABC affiliate WTEN. The Glens Falls Post Star also covered the <strong>AIDS</strong><br />
<strong>Council</strong>’s candlelight vigil held in Glens Falls City Park with an article entitled<br />
“Lighting a Flame of Hope for Those with <strong>AIDS</strong>.<br />
Coverage for the agency’s 7th <strong>Annual</strong> Dining Out For Life® event more than<br />
doubled compared to last year. The following publications featured a preview<br />
story about Dining Out For Life®: The Glens Falls Post Star, GAES Magazine, Hudson<br />
Register-Star, Troy Record, Plattsburgh Press-Republican, Catskill Daily Mail,<br />
Schenectady Daily Gazette, and Times Union. Dining Out for Life® also received<br />
significant online coverage, including at Steve Barnes’ blog “Table Hopping” on<br />
www.timesunion.com, www.albany.com, “Saratoga Seen” on www.timesunion.<br />
com, www.alloveralbany.com, www.winebookclub.org, www.hvcc.edu, www.<br />
newyorkpudding.com, and www.caresny.org.<br />
In May, Mishka Gilkes, Community Reentry Specialist at the <strong>AIDS</strong> <strong>Council</strong>’s<br />
Albany office, was crowned the <strong>2010</strong> Albany Tulip Queen. Mishka was featured<br />
in an on-air interview on FOX23, as well as quoted in the Times Union, Troy Record,<br />
and www.albanyevents.org.
