I’m honored to have the privilege to welcome you to St. Maarten/St. Martin (SXM) and to

present the 20 th Anniversary Edition of Harbour Magazine for SXM.

Harbour Magazine has done an amazing job over the years of capturing the true spirit of

Caribbean yachting culture by focusing not only on the impressive yachts and world-class

marinas, but also by introducing us to the people that make SXM Strong.

The spirit of our people was put to the test over the past two years due to the damage caused

by Hurricane Irma on September 6, 2017. We struggled, rebounded, rebuilt and are now

poised to excel thanks to the resiliency of our people and the continued support of the yachting

community around the world. There is more to be done for sure as not all industries have

rebounded as quickly and with as much

success as the marine industry; but one

thing is for certain: SXM is back and better

than ever!

l’édition du 20 e anniversaire de Harbour Magazine SXM.

Harbour Magazine fait un travail remarquable depuis des années en capturant le véritable esprit de la

culture caribéenne du yachting et en se focalisant non seulement sur les impressionnants yachts et

marinas de classe internationale, mais aussi sur les femmes et les hommes qui font la force de SXM.

L’esprit de notre population a été mis à rude épreuve ces deux dernières années par les dommages

Q&A With Brian Deher

Regional director of Marina Operations and Planning for Island Global Yachting

in the Caribbean and Latin America, Brian Deher has been with IGY

since 2005. A thought leader on the island of Sint Maarten/Saint Martin,

Deher chats with Harbour magazine on the state of the marina industry,

including IGY’s Isle del Sol and Simpson Bay marinas, which were damaged

in hurricane Irma, but are both back in business for the current season.

Harbour: How long have you been with IGY and briefly what

was your career path to get to your current position?

Brian Deher: I have been with IGY since February of 2005. I

started with the development team working on design, financial

modeling, and due-diligence of new marinas and then moved

into Operations in November of 2008. In 2008 I started by

managing the Yacht Club Isle de Sol and Simpson Bay Marina

on St. Maarten for IGY and then in 2016 became the Regional

Director of Marina Operations for the Caribbean and Latin

America. I have also been managing and developing the Dock

Maarten property in Great Bay, St. Maarten with my family since

I returned from University in 1997. My family built and has

owned Dock Maarten (Previously Great Bay Marina—where

Chesterfield’s Restaurant is located) since 1979 so I’ve always

been around marinas. I have a bachelor of science in International

Business from the George Washington University in

Washington D.C.

Harbour : Depuis combien de temps êtes-vous chez IGY

et pourriez-vous nous parler brièvement de la trajectoire

que vous avez suivie pour obtenir votre poste actuel ?

Brian Deher : Je suis chez IGY depuis février 2005. J’ai

commencé au sein de l’équipe de développement, où j’ai

travaillé sur le design, la modélisation financière, la due

diligence des nouvelles marinas, avant de passer aux

opérations en novembre 2008. En 2008, j’ai commencé à

gérer le Yacht Club Isle de Sol et la marina Simpson Bay

sur l’île de Saint Martin pour le compte d’IGY, puis, en

2016, je suis passé Directeur régional des opérations des

marinas pour la région Caraïbes et Amérique latine. Je

participe également à la gestion et au développement de

la propriété Dock Maarten à Great Bay, Saint Martin, avec

ma famille, et ce, depuis la fin de mes études en 1997. Ma

famille a construit et est propriétaire de Dock Maarten

(auparavant Great Bay Marina – où se trouve le restaurant

Chesterfield’s) depuis 1979. J’ai donc toujours passé beaucoup

de temps dans les marinas. J’ai une licence en

affaires internationales de l’université George Washington

de Washington D.C.

Harbour : Pouvez-vous nous parler de l’étendue des

dégâts causés par Irma dans vos marinas et du processus

de reconstruction pour les marinas et le côté néerlandais

de l’île ?

Brian Deher : Les marinas de Saint Martin ont été endommagées

par l’ouragan Irma. Le processus de reconstruction

a été difficile et coûteux, mais fort heureusement, de nombreux

yachts et bateaux de classe croisière ont affiché le

désir de revenir à SXM dès novembre 2017. En février

2018, 22 des 38 emplacements d’Isle de Sol étaient à

nouveau opérationnels et, à notre grande surprise, il y

avait une liste d’attente de yachts qui voulaient venir dans

la lagune de Simpson Bay.

Harbour: How badly were your marinas hit by Irma and what

was the reconstruction process for the marinas as well as the

Dutch side of the island?

Brian Deher: The marinas on St. Maarten were damaged by

Hurricane Irma. The reconstruction process was difficult and

costly, but thankfully there was a desire by many yachts and

cruising class vessels to return to SXM even as early as November

2017. By February 2018 we had 22 of the 38 slips at Isle de

Sol operational again and to our amazement we had a waiting

list of yachts wanting to come into the Simpson Bay Lagoon.

Harbour: How did you 2108-2019 season compare to pre-Irma

seasonal highs?

Brian Deher: We are happy to say that the 2018-2019 season

was one of our best high seasons ever. I am speaking specifically

about the Yacht Club Isle de Sol, but I know that there are many

other businesses in the marine sector on St. Maarten that had

one of their best years last year. From our point of view there

was high demand for charters to return to St. Barth. Many charter

guests that normally cruise around the North East Caribbean

cancelled their annual visits during the 2017/2018 season because

of hurricane damage. The pent-up demand to get back to the

North East Caribbean was quite apparent last year. We are truly

blessed to have neighbors like St. Barth and Anguilla who have

traditionally been the destinations for the yachts that home

port out of St. Maarten/St. Martin; their ability to recover from

the hurricanes at the pace they did is directly related to our success.

Harbour : Comment s’est passée la saison 2018-2019

par rapport aux hautes saisons d’avant Irma ?

Brian Deher : Nous sommes heureux de dire que la saison

2018-2019 est l’une de nos meilleures hautes saisons

jamais enregistrées. Je parle là spécifiquement du Yacht

Club Isle de Sol, mais je sais qu’il existe beaucoup d’autres

entreprises dans le secteur maritime sur Saint Martin qui

ont enregistré une de leurs meilleures années l’année

dernière. Depuis notre perspective, il y avait une demande

élevée pour faire revenir les charters à Saint Barth. Bon

nombre de clients charter, qui naviguent normalement

dans le nord-est des Caraïbes, ont annulé leur visite annuelle

pendant la saison 2017-2018 en raison des dommages

infligés par l’ouragan. Cette envie réprimée de revenir

dans le nord-est des Caraïbes était relativement apparente

l’année dernière. Nous avons vraiment de la chance d’avoir

des voisins comme Saint Barth et Anguilla, qui sont traditionnellement

les destinations plébiscitées par les yachts

dont le port d’attache hivernal est autre que St. Martin. Et

leur capacité à se relever des ouragans à la vitesse à

laquelle ils l’ont fait a directement contribué à notre succès.

Harbour: What work is still undergoing and are there

additional improvements planned for the near future?

Brian Deher: Isle de Sol was completely rebuilt by last

season but because of the overwhelming success posthurricane

Irma, IGY decided to upgrade the real estate

portion of the marina by completely renovating the bar,

restaurant and pool area as well as expanding the gym

and replacing all doors, windows, railings on the property

as well as completely resurfacing and repainting all of the

buildings. The goal is to improve upon the charter guest

experience at Isle de Sol—if you charter a yacht, normally

most people rushes to head over to St. Barth immediately

after landing on SXM. After a long day of travel the rush

to get from the airport to the yacht and then from the

marina to St. Barth is often quite stressful and we believe

there should be better alternatives for the first day of

what may be a once in a lifetime vacation. As such, IGY

has partnered with an amazing partner to take over the

food and beverage operation at Isle de Sol and other IGY

facilities.

Harbour: What role does the island play in the yachting

world in terms of a gateway to other islands; regattas

and nautical events; leading marinas?

Brian Deher: SXM is perfectly situated geographically for

yachts looking to charter in the Caribbean. We are almost

equidistant between the charter destinations in the

Southern Caribbean and the Western Caribbean and

Bahamas while being only 17 miles away from St. Barth,

which is the most demanded charter destination for the

entire Caribbean. Our duty-free status and direct flights

from the US, Europe, and South America make travel and

provisioning very simple and affordable. Over the years

the professionalism and skill sets offered by the different

marine trades companies and individuals on SXM continues

to improve to the extent that you can get pretty much

anything repaired, replaced or rebuilt on island. While we

do have several regattas and other nautical events on St.

Maarten such as the Heineken Regatta and the new

Caribbean Multihull Regatta, we also benefit by events

held on neighboring islands. For instance, the period

around the Bucket Regatta on St. Barth is one of our

busiest times of the year as most of the sailing yachts

competing in the event prepare for it on SXM and as the

event gets more popular we have seen more charter

activity due to family, friends and fans following the race.

Harbour : Quels sont les travaux encore en cours,

et des améliorations supplémentaires sont-elles

prévues pour l’avenir proche ?

Brian Deher : Isle de Sol a été entièrement reconstruite

la saison dernière, mais étant donné le succès incroyable

enregistré après Irma, IGY a décidé d’améliorer la partie

immobilière de la marina en rénovant intégralement

la zone de bars, restaurants et piscine ainsi qu’en

agrandissant le centre de fitness et en procédant au

au yacht, puis de la marina à Saint Barth est généralement

assez intense et nous estimons qu’il devrait y

avoir d’autres alternatives pour la première journée

de ce qui pourrait bien être le voyage d’une vie. IGY

s’est associé à un excellent partenaire pour gérer les

opérations du secteur alimentaire et boisson à Isle de

Sol et dans les autres structures IGY.

Harbour : Quel est le rôle joué par Saint Martin

dans l’univers du yachting, en particulier en ce qui

concerne sa situation de porte d’entrée pour se rendre

sur d’autres îles, et dans le milieu des régates et des

principales marinas ?

Brian Deher : SXM profite d’une situation géographique

idéale pour les yachts à affréter dans les Caraïbes.

Nous sommes quasiment à équidistance entre les

destinations charter des Caraïbes du sud et de l’ouest

et les Bahamas, tout en n’étant éloigné que de 17 miles

de Saint Barth, qui reste la destination charter la plus

convoitée de toute la région caraïbe. Notre statut

duty-free et les vols directs en provenance des États-

Unis, d’Europe et d’Amérique du sud rendent le

voyage et les approvisionnements à la fois très simples

et abordables. Au fil des ans, le professionnalisme et

les compétences proposés par les différentes entreprises

et les particuliers du secteur commercial maritime

présents sur SXM se sont tellement améliorés

qu’il est désormais possible de faire quasiment tout

réparer, remplacer ou reconstruire sur l’île.

Harbour: What is your five-year plan for Isle del Sol and Simpson Bay?

Brian Deher: The Simpson Bay Marina will be opened for the 2019/2020

season. That being said, based on the strong demand for slips on SXM

in general and our success at Isle de Sol, IGY is contemplating a complete

upgrade and expansion of Simpson Bay Marina. The majority of the

upgrades for Isle de Sol will be completed by November 2019 and while

we do have some other plans for further growth and expansion, we will

be concentrating on what we do best which is to take care of the captains

and crew that visit our facilities so that they are well suited to take the

best possible care of the yacht’s owners and guests. //

Harbour : Quel est votre plan à cinq ans pour Isle del Sol et Simpson Bay ?

Brian Deher : Simpson Bay Marina sera ouverte pour la saison 2019/2020. Cela dit,

au vu de la forte demande générale pour des emplacements à SXM et de notre succès

à Isle de Sol, IGY envisage la modernisation complète et l’extension de Simpson Bay

Marina. La plupart des améliorations apportées à Isle de Sol seront achevées d’ici

novembre 2019 et, s’il est vrai que nous avons bien des plans d’agrandissement et

d’extension future dans les cartons, nous entendons nous focaliser sur ce que nous

installations de sorte à ce qu’ils soient, eux aussi, parfaitement préparés pour s’occuper

du mieux possible des propriétaires de yachts et de leurs invités. //

Pour dessiner les lignes de ce yacht, le constructeur italien

Tankoa Yachts a fait appel à Francesco Paszkowski pour

l’extérieur et à Margherita Casprini, l’architecte principale

de Paszkowski, pour l’intérieur. Solo peut accueillir jusqu’à

12 personnes dans six cabines comprenant une master

suite implantée sur le généreux pont privé du propriétaire,

une suite VIP et quatre cabines doubles (deux d’entre elles

pouvant être converties en twins) situées sur le pont

principal. Si des invités supplémentaires sont attendus, il

est possible de convertir le salon de coiffure/massage et

le bureau du propriétaire en cabines supplémentaires,

puisqu’ils sont tous deux équipés d’une salle de bain

attenante.

Built by Tankoa Yachts in Italy, the exterior design is by

Francesco Paszkowski, with interiors by Paszkowski’s lead

designer Margherita Casprini. Solo can host up to 12

guests in six cabins, including the master suite on a spacious

private owner's deck, a VIP suite, and four doubles

(two of them convertible into twins) located on the main

deck. In the case of additional guests, the hair dressing/

massage room and the owner’s study can also be converted

into extra cabins, as they are both equipped with an ensuite

bathroom.

The upper deck houses the paperless, semi-integrated Boëning bridge equipped with radio

room, and a comfortable captain’s cabin. The aft section of this deck features an enormous

observation lounge with almost floor-to-ceiling windows, 90” 4K QLED TV screen, baby grand

piano, bar, and bio-ethanol fireplace.

The owner’s apartment with its study/media room features an island bed surrounded by

full-height windows with 180° views, an overhead skylight, and direct access to two intimate

outdoor terraces, shaded sun pads, and a Bisazza mosaic-tiled, glasswalled Jacuzzi. The owner

can arrive in style using the touch and go heliport deck aft (with a 4.5-ton certification, sufficient

for most twin turbine helicopters, such as an Augusta 109).

The aft deck is equipped with a six-meter transversal swimming pool,

sofas, and a pop-up TV screen recessed into the ceiling to turn this entire

space into an outdoor cinema. In addition, a dining room with a table

for 16 has vast sea views.

When designing the interiors, FPD Studio and Margherita

Casprini worked with the owner to provide a modern,

minimalist look, yet warm at the same time. The goal was

to use as many natural materials as possible, to be timeless

as well as contemporary. This resulted in marble from

France and India, onyx from Mexico, and woods such as

satin-finish grey oak and black oak, with accents of highgloss

Macassar ebony. The brushed aluminum ceiling panels

are accented with tinted grey oak and Nubuck, while stairway

walls are made of distressed oak sourced from a 300-

year-old farm in Norway. The hammam marble is from

Tuscany, and wood for the sauna sourced from a medieval

castle in Finland.

aux accents d’ébène de Macassar ultra-brillant. Le plafond

orné de panneaux d’aluminium brossé sont rehaussés de

chêne gris teinté et de nubuck, tandis que les murs de la

cage d’escalier sont recouverts de chêne affligé dénichés

dans une ferme norvégienne vieille de 300 ans. Le marbre

Saba dazzles the moment you see her. The

powerful silhouette of Saba, scared by ancient

volcanic eruptions and softened by lush tropical

foliage, ascends like an uncut green emerald

soaring upward from the ocean floor 2,000

feet below the water’s edge. above sea level,

five square miles of ethereal valleys and majestic peaks

continue upward another 3,000 feet to the top of Mount

Scenery, the highest point in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Whether arriving by air or sea, you find yourself

inexorably drawn to the breathtaking vistas. Every view

at every altitude is simply breathtaking. as you navigate

the surrounding waters, hike the stone trails or ply the

winding road that connects the island’s fairy villages and

amenities, you become deeply immersed in the unparalleled,

easily accessible natural splendor. This is one of the few

places on Earth where you can hike to the top of the highest

peak covered in a rare Elfin Forest in the morning, deep

dive in the afternoon and still have a few moments in between

to practice your yoga, grab beer or simply watch the stunning

views.

This is a very welcoming place. The citizens of Saba are

a lively combination of charming native born population

(many descended from the original 17 th century settlers)

and adventurous expats, all proud and protective of their

unique cultural legacy and natural heritage. To protect

their surroundings, in concert with the local and Dutch

government plus key international organizations, Saba has

developed an extensive marine and land park system

enhanced by ongoing educational programs. Currently

a local park, Saba is working with the Netherlands to

transition the system into a national park to further protect

the island. Saba also adheres to the SPaW International

Protocol, a regional agreement for the protection and

sustainable use of coastal and marine biodiversity in the

Wider Caribbean Region.

Since 1987, the Saba Park system is under the management

of the Saba Conservation Foundation. The park covers

all of the water surrounding the island as well as 26% of

the land mass. Each park area, whether land or marine,

is completely open to the public for both recreational

and scientific research use.

The Marine Park was the first area created in the Saba

park system. It encircles all of Saba to a depth of 200

feet including the seabed and waters. Included in the

area is the Saba banks, one of the largest of its kind, filled

with an extraordinary collection of fish and aquatic life.

One of the few self-sustaining parks in the world, the

entire Saba Park system encompasses on-going Keep

Saba Clean programs and maintenance of both the waters

and land including villages, trails, moorings, coral

nurseries and more. The program is supervised by experts

alongside volunteers including school children and students

participating in live aboard expeditions. One of the more

interesting aspects of the cleanup and recycling focus is

The Green Reef under consideration. as Saba consumes

more Heineken beer than any other place in the

Netherlands, the empty bottles will be crushed, mixed

with cement and recycled to build artificial reefs. Seems

that algae don’t like glass!

The Marine Park is always active yet supervised for both

commercial and visitor use. It’s a magnet for yachts,

divers, marine sports enthusiasts and individuals in the

pursuit of pristine aquatic wonders. Ranking as one of

the top dive spots on earth, Saba is suitable for divers of all levels.

The underwater vistas are pure magic whether shallow or deep

water diving. Shallow patch reefs, deep underwater seamounts,

ancient volcanic activity and plunging ocean depths provide a

panoramic view of aquatic life that thrives in Saba’s protected

waters. Colorful fish, sharks, giant grouper, rare marine species,

coral occupants, lush sponges, spectacular formations and

underwater activity compete for the diver’s attention. all diving

on Saba must be done with one of the highly professional

licensed island dive center as shore diving is virtually impossible.

Their expertise and experience also makes Saba a safe and

exciting place to learn how to dive. To facilitate use of the

Marine Park and provide greater access to amenities, a new

harbor is in the works.

above the water, The Saba National Park covers 43 hectares of

land including the old Sulphur Mine formerly The Sulphur

Mining Company’s property; donated to “Friends of Saba

Conversation Foundation” by the property’s heir. Within the

parcel’s boundaries exists a natural treasure trove of biological,

geological and historic diversity. a well maintained system of

trails riddles the island providing easy access to the island’s treasures.

Many trails are centuries old stone “roads” once used by man

and donkey to traverse up and down the steep hills and valleys.

New trails are being built to facilitate easier access to remote

treasures such as the abandoned Sulphur mine and transport

you to the remains of Mary’s Point village abandoned in 1934…

a journey that blends Saban culture with nature.

The Saba Trail Shop in Windwardside is an excellent starting

point for exploring whether hiking alone or with an expert trail

guide. You can easily hike from bottom to top beginning at

Spring bay and upward to the Elfin Forest. You pass through

an extraordinary variety of ecosystems, experiencing each one

as you ascend. From the dry forests at lower elevations to the

Elfin Forest Reserve atop Mt Scenery, the effect is transcendent.

The rarest moment is to enter the surreal Elfin Forest whose

atmosphere is a mystical experience…like something one

imagines from the Hobbit. While there are a few Elfin Forest

on other Caribbean islands, none is as easily accessible or

filled with such rare species.

The Saba Land Park is also a paradise for bird lovers. It’s a

magnet for colorful tropical birds both on Saba proper and

the adjacent Green Island, attracting an extraordinary

diversity of bird life. From March-april the area teems with

the third largest population of migrating and breeding

tropical birds. Over 10,000 brown boobies, Turns, brown

Trembler, red-billed tropical birds and more make the Saba

Land Park their home.

an integral element to support the island’s ecosystem and

the park system is Sea & Learn, a month long event featuring

international and local experts gathered to report on their

specific expertise in the natural world from sea to sky including

naturalists, scientists and academics in fields ranging from

sharks and fish to spiders and vines. Many are acclaimed in

their field including Matt Potensky who found a new species

of shark in Saba during a Sea & Learn event.

In harmony with the island’s natural splendor is Saba’s poetic

man-made beauty and delightful amenities. Quaint historic

villages dot the hillsides and valleys, each a cluster of red

roof cottages in traditional Saban vernacular accented with

pretty green shutters and fretwork trim. Native stone walls

and pathways create friendly boundaries and edge lush tropical

gardens. Within the main villages you’ll find unique places

to stay from comfortably appointed boutique hotels and

cottage colonies to upscale cottage and villa rentals where

you can live like a local… simply walking to shops and

restaurants.

Delightful boutiques and galleries provide unique souvenirs

of the island, many of which are inspired by and made right

The Heineken Regatta celebrates its 40 th anniversary, March 3-5, 2020,

with thousands of sailors from 35 countries expected to compete, as they

did for the 2019 edition of the race, which was held February 28-March 3,

2019. This annual nautical celebration attracts Olympic medalists and

world champions sailing maxis and performance multi-hulls as well as

amateur sailors on bare-boats and charters. It all adds up to an incredible

regatta with four days of sailing, special cup races, and an unbeatable

ambiance!

La Heineken Regatta célèbrera son 40 e anniversaire entre le 3 et le 5

mars 2020, et s’attend à accueillir des navigateurs de 35 pays, comme

cela fut le cas à l’occasion de l’édition 2019 qui a eu lieu du 28 février au

3 mars. Cette fête nautique annuelle attire aussi bien des médaillés olympiques

et des champions du monde sur des maxis et des multicoques

performance que des navigateurs amateurs sur des bateaux coque-nue

ou des charters. Le résultat est un événement incroyable qui comporte

quatre jours de régate, des courses spéciales de coupe et une ambiance

The last day of the 2019 regatta saw winds of 15-

18 knots and in several of the classes the final race

would influence the overall results. Tacking close

to the shore, with shifting wind and choppy seas,

the conditions were challenging. For the Inshore

Class, sailing in the lagoon in Jeanneau 20’s, Miss

Guided won overall, with Rien Korteknie at the

helm, a competitor who has sailed in 38 of the 39

St. Maarten Heineken Regattas to date.

The ORC Performance Class was led by Lady Mariposa

in a clean sweep of wins, while the fast and

furious Ocean Racing 1 class was dominated by

Volvo Open 70 I Love Poland sailing easily into first

place overall. In the Maxi 1 class, Selene was the

winner.

A glorious St Barth Bucket it was! A fleet of 34 super-yachts competed in five

spinnaker classes and one Corinthian Spirit (non-spinnaker) class.

With winds of 18-20 knots on the final day, sailing around

St Barth was at its best, and the competition throughout

the three days of racing was fierce. “If you won your class

at the 2019 St. Barth Bucket, you were doing something

right and can be very proud,” says race director Peter

Craig. “Across the board, we had incredibly competitive

racing.”

With a 1-2-3 performance to show for its crew’s strong

sailing skills, the 59.9m ketch Hetairos, a design collaboration

between Dykstra and Reichel/Pugh, won the six-yacht Les

Gazelles des Mer class and took home overall honors and

the coveted Bucket trophy.

“I joined Hetairos on the 1st of September 2014,” says

winning captain Graham Newton. “This Bucket was the first

time that we have been racing since the St Barth Bucket in

2016, since then we have been cruising worldwide and off

the beaten track. Our plans are still formulating for the

future but whatever we do it will be exciting!”

For Newton, “the sailing this year was fantastic, the location, weather, and competition

were awesome. We were in a really tight class with all of the boats well prepared,

and very well sailed, any of the boats were capable of taking the win which was

reflected in three different winners over the three days and the points spread being

very close on day 3,” he points out. “I think our edge was a lot of training, we had

three days in Antigua with the race crew and then another three days in St Barth.

The permanent crew did a great job of preparing the boat and the out of the 24

additional race crew only four had not sailed on the boat before, we have a super

tight knot group and it really showed.”

Comme le souligne Graham Newton, « la navigation était fantastique cette

année. Le lieu, la météo et la compétition, tout était génial. Nous étions dans

une classe très resserrée, l’ensemble des bateaux étant très bien préparés et

très bien skippés. N’importe lequel d’entre eux aurait pu l’emporter, comme

le démontrent les trois vainqueurs différents sur les trois jours et le très faible

écart de points le dernier jour. Je crois que ce qui nous a permis de gagner,

c’est l’intense entraînement. Nous avons eu trois jours à Antigua avec l’équipe

de course, puis encore trois jours à St Barth. L’équipage permanent a réalisé

un travail fantastique de préparation du bateau et sur les 24 membres d’équipage

supplémentaires pour la course, seuls quatre n’avaient jamais navigué sur le

bateau auparavant. Nous avons une équipe très soudée, et cela a vraiment

payé ».

Bobby Velasquez started Bobby’s Marina

back in 1971 as Bobby’s Yacht Service.

Today, this full-service marina and boatyard

is a modern facility within walking distance

of Philipsburg. Bobby’s Yard offers a new

state-of-the-art mega yacht shipyard in

Cole Bay, on the lagoon just after Island

WaterWorld on Wellington Road. Facilities

Marina Fort Louis a pu réouvrir au public le

15 Novembre 2017 moyennant une première

phase de travaux de réparations urgent,

signe fort du renouveau pour le nautisme à

Saint-Martin après une saison cyclonique

particulièrement dévastatrice. 70% des quais

sont aujourd’hui exploités, il s’agit du seul

port de plaisance opérationnel sur la partie

française de l’île. Trois compagnies de charter

poursuivent actuellement leurs activités au

départ de la marina (Tradewinds, Moorings,

Dream Yacht Charter). Habituellement abritée

de toutes les conditions de houle, la digue

de protection a souffert des dégâts : le plan

d’eau est plus sensible à ce type de phénomène

en attendant une deuxième phase de

travaux programmés entre 2019-2020, qui

verra la remise en état de l’ensemble du site.

La Collectivité de Saint-Martin investit 4,5 M€

dans la réhabilitation complète de son port

de plaisance. Au 1 er janvier 2019 elle a délégué

la gestion du site à son Établissement

Portuaire.

Marina Fort Louis was able to reopen on

November 15, 2017 after a first phase of urgent

repairs following hurricane Irma and a sign of

the renewal of nautical activities in Saint Martin

after a disastrous hurricane season. 70% of

the docks are in use today, and this is the only

marina open on the French side of the island

at the moment. Three charter companies

(Tradewinds, Moorings, Dream Yacht Charter)

are using the marina as home base. Usually

sheltered from strong swells, the marina’s sea

wall was damaged and will be repaired in the

2019-2020 season. The Collectivité of Saint

Martin will have invested 4.5 M€ in the complete

renovation of its marina. As of January

2019, management was taken over by the

Établissement Portuaire.

Simpson Bay Lagoon. With a span

of 760 meters, it is the only swing

bridge in the Caribbean, and
