Conversely,white Americans comprisemore than 60 percent of thepopulation, yet they compriseonly 36 percent of individualsmurdered by police.This disparity illustrates aglaring issue in American policing.Police are given the power tokill in order to protect citizens,yet they are doing the oppositefor people of color.While police shot and killedBreonna Taylor in her apartmentwhile she slept. However, whenDylann Roof, who was white,shot and killed nine Black peoplein a church in Charleston, SC policetook him into custody aliveand bought him fast food on hisway to jail.Similarly, police shot andkilled 12-year-old Tamir Rice forplaying with a toy gun in a parkon the East Side of Cleveland.But when a 19-year-old whiteman killed 17 people at MarjoryStoneman Douglas High Schoolin 2018, police took him intocustody alive.Police departments throughoutthe country must rethinkwhom they’re hiring, how they’retraining their officers and whatbiases pervade law enforcementto ensure they are protecting theentire population, not just thewhite community.VOL. 91 ISSUE I
