JUST MUSTARD :: At Sneaky Pete’s, 

Edinburgh. Just Mustard consist of vocalist Katie 

Ball, guitarists David Noonan (also backing 

vocals) and Mete Kalyon, bassist Rob Clarke, 

and drummer Shane Maguire. Their heady blend 

of noise, trip hop, and electronic-influenced 

music has helped them build a reputation as one 

of Ireland’s most thrilling new bands. Their 2018 

debut ‘Wednesday’ earned acclaim at home and 

abroad – most notably capturing a Choice Music 

Prize nomination for Irish Album of the Year. 

Fader praised the band’s “intense and rich 

shoegaze-meets-noise sound,” NME called their 

album “a two-toned masterpiece,” the Irish 

Independent described it as “a swirling 

atmosphere-heavy thrill-ride,” and Stereogum 

said “it’s easy to imagine Just Mustard garnering 

more international attention in the near future”. 

Their 2019 double A-side ‘Frank/October’ earned 

spotlights from KEXP as a ‘Song Of The Day’ and 

from BBC Radio 1 as ‘Tune Of The Week’. The 

band supported Fontaines DC on their sold out 

2019 UK tour, and emerged as a ‘band of the 

weekend’ at Brighton’s Great Escape Festival - 

The Independent (“worth waiting for”), Dork 

(“unforgettable”), DIY (“a monstrous wall of 

sound”), Gigwise (“cinematic at every turn”), 

Loud And Quiet (“distinctly fixating and eerie”). 

They were a highlight of Primavera in 2019, with 

NME calling them one of the “12 best acts” of 

the festival, and that same year were also 

handpicked by Robert Smith to support The Cure

THE SAY AWARD :: At The Usher Hall, 

Edinburgh. The winner of The SAY Award will 

collect £20,000 – one of the most lucrative prize 

funds in the UK – while all nine runners-up will 

be awarded £1,000 and their own bespoke 

award. Following a digital edition in 2020, the 

event returns as a physical ceremony, 

welcoming guests to Edinburgh’s Usher Hall. For 

the first time since the award’s inception, music 

fans are able to join the celebrations and 

purchase tickets to attend one of the most 

exciting nights in Scotland’s musical calendar. 

This year’s Ceremony (marking the award’s 10th

CHUBBY AND THE GANG :: At Mash House, 

Edinburgh. Fast rising London punk 5-piece 

Chubby and the Gang have announced a bumper 

40-date tour of the UK and Ireland through 

November and December of this year offering a 

chance for many to finally see just why they've 

become one of the most exciting and talkedabout 

punk bands in the world over the past 

year. Fronted by Manning (a former cabbie who 

now also works as an electrician), Chubby and 

the Gang have been leading a pack of bands 

coming out of a new wave of British Hardcore. 

Speed Kills was one of the critical surprises of 

the year thanks to its unrelentingly fun 

concoction of hardcore, pub rock, doo wop, and 

blues. The album was produced by Jonah Falco 

of F**ked Up, and boasts songs of deep 

substance and political conscience with a precise 

sense of time and place. It received an 8.0 

Pitchfork review, Stereogum praised its “massive 

barroom gang choruses, power chords at 

breakneck tempos, rock spelled R-A-W-K and 

visceral gratification,” while The Guardian 

declared them "UK punk's most vital new band"

SCOTTISH NATIONAL JAZZ ORCHESTRA 

with KURT ELLING :: At The Queen's Hall, 

Edinburgh. This autumn sees the welcome return 

of the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra's good 

friend Kurt Elling to Scotland’s shores for a fourcity 

concert series. The Grammy award-winning 

singer joins us in November for ‘Apparition 

Bridge’, an evening of powerful, modern music 

featuring European composers of great creative 

jazz.

JAWS :: At The Mash House, Edinburgh. JAWS 

take to the road this winter for their first live 

dates since 2019. The band’s new limited edition 

book includes intimate behind the scenes 

photographs and captivating images from the 

stage during the band’s 2019 tour dates in 

Bristol, Southampton, Oxford, Nottingham, 

Liverpool, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Belfast, Dublin, 

Leeds and Coventry. Speaking about the book, 

Connor elaborates: "Originally there was no 

intention to make a book, we had Peter out on 

the road with us taking pictures but we thought 

it would be cool to use all the photos from one 

period of time to create something physical 

rather than images just sitting on Instagram or 

my hard drive for the rest of time. We’re all 

really happy with how the book has turned out, 

and hope that other people can find just as much 

enjoyment out of it as we do flicking back

DJANGO DJANGO :: At The Mash House, 

Edinburgh. Back in the old world at the start of 

2020, our psychedelic punk heroes The Lovely 

Eggs were primed to release their new album ‘I 

Am Moron’ – their greatest work yet, overflowing 

with political venom and fresh ideas, set 

to a gloriously independent noise. Then, of 

course, the pandemic happened. The Lovely 

Eggs pushed ahead, and the album came out to 

critical-acclaim and indie chart-topping status, 

but their plans to tour it far and wide were 

obviously scuppered. At first, their UK tour was 

rescheduled to just two months later, thinking 

there’s no way the pandemic could last more 

than a few weeks…. Fast forward a year, their 

UK tour has been rebooked independently by the 

band at least five times and The Lovely Eggs are 

still yet to play the new album live, but new tour 

dtaes are now on sale for 2022.

CHUBBY AND THE GANG :: At King Tuts, 

Glasgow. Fast rising London punk 5-piece 

Chubby and the Gang have announced a 

bumper 40-date tour of the UK and Ireland 

through November and December of this 

year offering a chance for many to finally see 

just why they've become one of the most 

exciting and talked-about punk bands in the 

world over the past year. Fronted by Manning 

(a former cabbie who now also works as an 

electrician), Chubby and the Gang have been 

leading a pack of bands coming out of a new 

wave of British Hardcore. Speed Kills was one 

of the critical surprises of the year thanks to 

its unrelentingly fun concoction of hardcore, 

pub rock, doo wop, and blues. The album 

was produced by Jonah Falco of F**ked Up, 

and boasts songs of deep substance and 

political conscience with a precise sense of 

time and place. It received an 8.0 Pitchfork 

review, Stereogum praised its “massive 




declared them "UK punk's most vital new 

band" and NME called them "the scene's clear 

front-runners" and Speed Kills "a thrilling 

white-knuckle ride through multiple flavours

Damn Truth have extensively toured Europe 

and the USA, opened tours for Z.Z. Top (and 

partied with Billy Gibbons in his pyjamas), the 

Sheepdogs, Styx, and Rival Sons.They sold out 

the legendary Whisky a Go-Go in Los Angeles, 

sold out the Corona Theatre in their hometown 

of Montreal, and even had one of their videos 

featured on the official Janis Joplin Facebook 

page. It's a culmination of a lot of blood, sweat 

and tears that’s come fruition with “Now or 

Nowhere”. “Now or Nowhere” chronicles the 

band as they navigate life, love, and 

everything else in a world gone seemingly 

upside down and sideways during the past 

year they were unable to finish the album with 

Bob because of COVID-19 restrictions, the 

band recorded the remaining three songs with 

help from Juno Award-winning producer Jean 

Massicotte (Patrick Watson, The Damn Truth) 

who mixed “Everything Fades”; and the rest of 

the mixing was done by Vance Powell (Jack 

White, Chris Stapleton), Nick DiDia (Bruce 

Springsteen, Rage Against The Machine), and

ECHO MACHINE supporting THE NINTH 

WAVE :: At Church, Dundee. A loud Pop Group 

from Dundee, and they have gigs! "They will be 

a flippin' hoot!" Echo Machine played the King 

Tut's Summer Nights Festival in 2019. In 

addition to performing live, the band released a 

number of singles in their first year together, 

many of which arrived with accompanying 

videos. Debut single St Elmo was followed by 

Vibrations, Chameleon and Automatic Love, the 

latter being reviewed as a 'bruising, belter of a 

song'. In addition to these videos, Echo Machine 

collaborated with Thai singer Janine Alissa 

Wollmann on a cover of the Billie Eilish track Bad 

Guy, producing an accompanying music video. 

Their single 'Headlights' was also well-reviewed, 

being described as 'infectious discowave'. The 

success of the band in 2019 prompted BBC radio 

presenter, Vic Galloway, to name the band as 

one of his 25 Scottish Artists to Watch in 2020.

foremost female guitarists, and has toured 

extensively with the award winning Anna Massie 

Band. As an accompanist she is in high demand, 

her most recent collaborations have involved 

Songs of Separation, Phil Cunningham and 

Fiddler’s Bid. Last seen in Crail with Robyn 

Stapleton and Claire Hastings. Laura-Beth Salter 

takes influence from the Oldtime and Bluegrass 

music that her parents played whilst she was 

growing up in Lincolnshire. After spending time 

studying a Traditional Music Degree in Newcastle 

she became heavily involved in the folk scene. 

She is a founding member of The Shee and a 

member of The MacLean Project led by Dougie 

MacLean. As well as touring with their duo, Jenn

local lad Dylan John Thomas drew one of the

5-piece Chubby and the Gang have announced a 

bumper 40-date tour of the UK and Ireland

why they've become one of the most exciting 

and talked-about punk bands in the world over 

the past year. Fronted by Manning (a former 

cabbie who now also works as an electrician), 

Chubby and the Gang have been leading a pack

Dean has many new plans as life gets moving again ... 

despite the global pandemic, award winning Scottish singer 

songwriter Dean has found various ways to keep creating 

and releasing new music, finding inspiration from Leith to 

Tucson via Dyess USA. 

Dean is also delighted to finally see some light on the road 

back to live gigs, with dates booked for a short south of 

England tour with guitarist Jim Maving (including London, 

Brighton and Winchester) in November, before finishing 

2021 with pre Christmas shows in Glasgow and Edinburgh, 

with his Southerners band and special guest Amy Geddes. 

2021 started with a virtual live concert, with Calexico 

musicians Joey Burns and Martin Wenk, specially recorded 

long distance for Glasgow’s Celtic Connections, described by 

festival director Donald Shaw as ‘a hands across the water 

meeting of great songs and minds’ 

Sinner’s Shrine, the full album he recorded in Tucson just 

before lockdown, which got the full widescreen, Panavision, 

desert noir Calexico treatment, will finally be released mid 

Feb 2022 (a joint release by London’s Eel Pie Records and 

Netherlands’ CRS). In addition to members of Calexico, 

special guests include Grant-Lee Phillips and Gaby Moreno. 

While still rooted in Dean’s signature sound, each song sees 

him pushing the boundaries, adding some desert noir and 

Latin notes to his musical palette. 

The prelude to Sinner’s Shrine – a triple EP release - The 

Desert Trilogy – has been released throughout 2021, 

attracted glowing reviews across genres, and whetted 

appetites for the full album release. 

These recordings are the latest stop on a lifetime’s 

journey - from the post industrial heartlands of Scotland to 

the untrammelled wide-open vistas of the American 

Southwest – as Dean surrenders to the intoxicating sounds 

of the US desert states, with themes of love and lust, 

sinners and saints, the displaced, the wanderers and the 

border ghosts. 

2021 also saw Dean collaborating with Edinburgh author 

Ian Rankin on a new track (Edinburgh Winter Blues) for the 

recently released The Wanderer album, tribute to the late, 

great Jackie Leven. The album was compiled by Michael 

Weston King (My Darling Clementine) and includes 

contributions from Ralph McTell, Rab Noakes, Eliza Carthy, 

Cash Back in Fife with Dean Owens, Ian Rankin and 

Rab Noakes

have today announced their sure-to-be

Ladykillers Tour’. After 18 months cooped up

(Innes, Uilly and Boydie) met up in the house to 

have the craic on a Saturday night playing some 

music with just the dog and cat watching. After a 

few tunes getting thrown across the room Boydie 

started muttering a few sentences. As he is a 

man of few words no attention was really given 

to him until he shouted “Quick, line me out!” Not 

a second to spare, a set of old broken 

headphones were cable tied to a guitar stand 

and this back fed the muttering into a crackly 

guitar amp and out came a few cobwebs 

followed shortly after with a second that nobody 

had ever heard before. What came next was five 

gallons of lyrics, verse after verse, song after 

song – PEAT & DIESEL WAS BORN!! The songs 

wont make much sense to the average person,

screening of a film on her work with 

Musicians Without Borders in Palestine

A classically trained double bassist, Emma’s practice builds 

on the language of classical music and explores the storytelling 

aspect of folk music from different parts of the 

world. 

“The Relentless Approach of Better Times is my testimony 

to the importance of solid, galvanised, positivity action as 

the only way through multiple current global crises” says 

Emma. 

“A project first started in 2018 with OCM, it has been a 

tough and very personal journey creating and developing 

this work, which would have been shelved during the 

pandemic were it not for the unwavering support of 

Cryptic - definitely an easier option but who said the easy 

option was the right one?” 

Cryptic Artistic Director, Cathie Boyd, says: “Cryptic is 

thrilled to continue supporting the exciting young Scottish 

talent Hammy Sgìth, following his Sonic Bites event earlier 

in the year, and the following month we will also present 

double bassist Emma Smith fresh from her 2021 Cryptic 

Cove Park autumn residency”. Cryptic Nights is all about 

discovering and nurturing boundary-breaking artists 

producing diverse and imaginative music performances and

2019. In addition to performing live, the band 

released a number of singles in their first year 

together, many of which arrived with 

accompanying videos. Debut single St Elmo was 

followed by Vibrations, Chameleon and 

Automatic Love, the latter being reviewed as a 

'bruising, belter of a song'. In addition to these 

videos, Echo Machine collaborated with Thai 

singer Janine Alissa Wollmann on a cover of the 

Billie Eilish track Bad Guy, producing an 

accompanying music video. Their single 

'Headlights' was also well-reviewed, being 

described as 'infectious discowave'. The success 

of the band in 2019 prompted BBC radio 

presenter, Vic Galloway, to name the band as 

one of his 25 Scottish Artists to Watch in 2020.

well-known draw on the UK Blues Rock festival
