‘Philly’ Angelo Collins, Saleem Andrew McGroarty
and Vic Galloway of CHECK MASSES have helped
shape the sound of their hometown of Edinburgh
for years through underground gigs, club culture
and broadcasting. Debut album, Nightlife flits
between the shadows, smudging the lines
between cinematic hip-hop collages, expansive
dub, wiry electronics, psychedelia and Lynchian
unease across 10 superb tracks. Nightlife
Remixed takes you even further into their own
shady but alluring world of psychedelic soul.
Moroccan Skies EP is out 23 July via Triassic
Tusk Records, and Nightlife Remixed in
September. Meanwhile subject to Covid rules
see the band around Scotland very soon! Pre-
21 OCTOBER
JUST MUSTARD :: At Sneaky Pete’s,
Edinburgh. Just Mustard consist of vocalist Katie
Ball, guitarists David Noonan (also backing
vocals) and Mete Kalyon, bassist Rob Clarke,
and drummer Shane Maguire. Their heady blend
of noise, trip hop, and electronic-influenced
music has helped them build a reputation as one
of Ireland’s most thrilling new bands. Their 2018
debut ‘Wednesday’ earned acclaim at home and
abroad – most notably capturing a Choice Music
Prize nomination for Irish Album of the Year.
Fader praised the band’s “intense and rich
shoegaze-meets-noise sound,” NME called their
album “a two-toned masterpiece,” the Irish
Independent described it as “a swirling
atmosphere-heavy thrill-ride,” and Stereogum
said “it’s easy to imagine Just Mustard garnering
more international attention in the near future”.
Their 2019 double A-side ‘Frank/October’ earned
spotlights from KEXP as a ‘Song Of The Day’ and
from BBC Radio 1 as ‘Tune Of The Week’. The
band supported Fontaines DC on their sold out
2019 UK tour, and emerged as a ‘band of the
weekend’ at Brighton’s Great Escape Festival -
The Independent (“worth waiting for”), Dork
(“unforgettable”), DIY (“a monstrous wall of
sound”), Gigwise (“cinematic at every turn”),
Loud And Quiet (“distinctly fixating and eerie”).
They were a highlight of Primavera in 2019, with
NME calling them one of the “12 best acts” of
the festival, and that same year were also
handpicked by Robert Smith to support The Cure
at Dublin’s Malahide Castle. More new music
coming soon.
23 OCTOBER
THE SAY AWARD :: At The Usher Hall,
Edinburgh. The winner of The SAY Award will
collect £20,000 – one of the most lucrative prize
funds in the UK – while all nine runners-up will
be awarded £1,000 and their own bespoke
award. Following a digital edition in 2020, the
event returns as a physical ceremony,
welcoming guests to Edinburgh’s Usher Hall. For
the first time since the award’s inception, music
fans are able to join the celebrations and
purchase tickets to attend one of the most
exciting nights in Scotland’s musical calendar.
This year’s Ceremony (marking the award’s 10th
birthday) will celebrate the strength and
diversity of Scottish music; past, present and
future.
13 NOVEMBER
CHUBBY AND THE GANG :: At Mash House,
Edinburgh. Fast rising London punk 5-piece
Chubby and the Gang have announced a bumper
40-date tour of the UK and Ireland through
November and December of this year offering a
chance for many to finally see just why they've
become one of the most exciting and talkedabout
punk bands in the world over the past
year. Fronted by Manning (a former cabbie who
now also works as an electrician), Chubby and
the Gang have been leading a pack of bands
coming out of a new wave of British Hardcore.
Speed Kills was one of the critical surprises of
the year thanks to its unrelentingly fun
concoction of hardcore, pub rock, doo wop, and
blues. The album was produced by Jonah Falco
of F**ked Up, and boasts songs of deep
substance and political conscience with a precise
sense of time and place. It received an 8.0
Pitchfork review, Stereogum praised its “massive
barroom gang choruses, power chords at
breakneck tempos, rock spelled R-A-W-K and
visceral gratification,” while The Guardian
declared them "UK punk's most vital new band"
for years through underground gigs, club culture
and broadcasting. Debut album, Nightlife flits
between the shadows, smudging the lines
between cinematic hip-hop collages, expansive
dub, wiry electronics, psychedelia and Lynchian
unease across 10 superb tracks. Nightlife
Remixed takes you even further into their own
shady but alluring world of psychedelic soul.
Moroccan Skies EP is out 23 July via Triassic
Tusk Records, and Nightlife Remixed in
September. Meanwhile subject to Covid rules see
the band around Scotland very soon! Pre-Order
Connor elaborates: "Originally there was no
intention to make a book, we had Peter out on
the road with us taking pictures but we thought
it would be cool to use all the photos from one
period of time to create something physical
rather than images just sitting on Instagram or
my hard drive for the rest of time. We’re all
really happy with how the book has turned out,
and hope that other people can find just as much
enjoyment out of it as we do flicking back
through it."
28 MAY
DJANGO DJANGO :: At The Mash House,
Edinburgh. Back in the old world at the start of
2020, our psychedelic punk heroes The Lovely
Eggs were primed to release their new album ‘I
Am Moron’ – their greatest work yet, overflowing
with political venom and fresh ideas, set
to a gloriously independent noise. Then, of
course, the pandemic happened. The Lovely
Eggs pushed ahead, and the album came out to
critical-acclaim and indie chart-topping status,
but their plans to tour it far and wide were
obviously scuppered. At first, their UK tour was
rescheduled to just two months later, thinking
there’s no way the pandemic could last more
than a few weeks…. Fast forward a year, their
UK tour has been rebooked independently by the
band at least five times and The Lovely Eggs are
still yet to play the new album live, but new tour
dtaes are now on sale for 2022.
MADNESS :: At SSE Hydro, Glasgow.
Madness have today announced their sureto-be
triumphant return to the road with ‘The
Ladykillers Tour’. After 18 months cooped up
considering their career options (punctuated
by excursions out for critically acclaimed
docu-series ‘Before We Was We’ and last
night’s magnificent ‘The Get Up!’ more on
which later) the Nutty Boys finally get back
to doing what they do best - uniting the
people for a right raucous live bash. And with
a live set teeming with hits from their
unrivalled back catalogue, what-a-tour this
promises to be. Joining Madness on The
Ladykillers arena tour will be very fragrant
guests Squeeze. Squeeze first formed in
1973, shortly after Chris Difford and Glenn
Tilbrook had begun their songwriting
partnership. By 1977 they had made their
recording debut and enjoyed a string of hits,
establishing the band as not just a passing
footnote in new-wave history, but as an
important and vital part of quintessential
British music. Following solo careers, the Ivor
Novello Award-winning duo reunited in 2007
CHUBBY AND THE GANG :: At King Tuts,
Glasgow. Fast rising London punk 5-piece
Chubby and the Gang have announced a
bumper 40-date tour of the UK and Ireland
through November and December of this
year offering a chance for many to finally see
just why they've become one of the most
exciting and talked-about punk bands in the
world over the past year. Fronted by Manning
(a former cabbie who now also works as an
electrician), Chubby and the Gang have been
leading a pack of bands coming out of a new
wave of British Hardcore. Speed Kills was one
of the critical surprises of the year thanks to
its unrelentingly fun concoction of hardcore,
pub rock, doo wop, and blues. The album
was produced by Jonah Falco of F**ked Up,
and boasts songs of deep substance and
political conscience with a precise sense of
time and place. It received an 8.0 Pitchfork
review, Stereogum praised its “massive
barroom gang choruses, power chords at
breakneck tempos, rock spelled R-A-W-K and
visceral gratification,” while The Guardian
declared them "UK punk's most vital new
band" and NME called them "the scene's clear
front-runners" and Speed Kills "a thrilling
white-knuckle ride through multiple flavours
of hardcore punk".
whose ferocious slide guitar style twists and
turns timeless themes and ideas to his own
ends. He’s a musical visionary unafraid to
trample on the boundaries of restricting
labels,” said Blues Matters Magazine. The
forthcoming studio album is a culmination
everything Troy has learnt so far on his
into sharp focus a much tighter song-writing
and more visceral, muscular production style.
King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut has
announced a brand new one-day
event on Saturday 30 October
presented by Vault City Brewing.
'New Noise' aims to showcase some
of the hottest new musical talent
across Scotland and beyond.
After a successful year due to the rise in sales of
their now legendary modern sour beers, Vault City
Brewing have teamed up with the iconic Glasgow
venue to support the music industry after a difficult
18 months for musicians and music industry as a
whole across the country. New Noise will give the
acts who have missed the opportunity to play live
and hone their craft the chance to play to new
crowds in the Scottish city renowned worldwide for
its music scene.
Headliners The Van T’s make their return to the
stage for the first time since their sold out King
Tut’s New Year’s Revolution show back in January
2020. Since forming in 2013 the surf-pop quartet
have built a strong reputation for their live show
which has seen them share the stage with the likes
of Wolf Alice, The Jesus & Mary Chain and
Sunflower Bean. The band have also supported Foo
Fighters as part of their Summer Sessions show at
Bellahouston Park in the summer of 2019.
Also included on the bill are jangle-pop band
L’Objectif, post-punks Treeboy & Arc, London trio
Honeyglaze, bedroom-pop indie duo Pretty
Preachers Club, and many more. The one-day event
promises to bring some of the most exciting new
from music across the UK with Vault City supplying
New Noise will take place across both the venue
kicking off at 3pm.
Edinburgh-based Vault City Brewery cofounder
Steven Smith-Hay, who began
brewing beers in his Murrayfield kitchen in
2018, said: “We’re very lucky our business has
gone from strength to strength during the
pandemic, as beer drinkers became a bit more
experimental and began to develop a taste for our
modern sour beers. We want to pay it forward to
those who have been unable to work and reach
their audience. I missed going to see live music so
much – but that pales in comparison to how live
musicians who have been starved of their livelihood
must feel.
“Partnering with a venue as iconic as King Tut’s is a
dream come true. Hopefully our new Taproom
venue will have its own part to play in musical
history!”
Chris Loomes, Booker of New Noise, at King
Tut’s said “We are excited to be in partnership
with such a like-minded brand. We are both aligned
in the fact that we want to see the hottest new
musical talent across Scotland and beyond shine.
These last 18 months have been rough for
musicians, and we want to do everything we can to
help - it’s important we have partners who feel the
same.”
DJANGO DJANGO :: At Stereo, Glasgow.
Back in the old world at the start of 2020, our
psychedelic punk heroes The Lovely Eggs were
primed to release their new album ‘I Am
Moron’ – their greatest work yet, over-flowing
with political venom and fresh ideas, set to a
gloriously independent noise. Then, of course,
the pandemic happened. The Lovely Eggs
pushed ahead, and the album came out to
critical-acclaim and indie chart-topping status,
but their plans to tour it far and wide were
ECHO MACHINE supporting THE NINTH
WAVE :: At Church, Dundee. A loud Pop Group
from Dundee, and they have gigs! "They will be
a flippin' hoot!" Echo Machine played the King
Tut's Summer Nights Festival in 2019. In
addition to performing live, the band released a
number of singles in their first year together,
many of which arrived with accompanying
videos. Debut single St Elmo was followed by
Vibrations, Chameleon and Automatic Love, the
latter being reviewed as a 'bruising, belter of a
song'. In addition to these videos, Echo Machine
collaborated with Thai singer Janine Alissa
Wollmann on a cover of the Billie Eilish track Bad
Guy, producing an accompanying music video.
Their single 'Headlights' was also well-reviewed,
being described as 'infectious discowave'. The
success of the band in 2019 prompted BBC radio
presenter, Vic Galloway, to name the band as
one of his 25 Scottish Artists to Watch in 2020.
In January 2020 the band announced that their
debut album would be called Instant
Transmissions. Glasgow based band 'The Ninth
Wave' have release a new single and video called
"Maybe You Didn't Know". The new single follows
The Ninth Wave's Faris Badwan (The Horrors)-
produced EP ‘Happy Days!’ and their AIM Award
and Scottish Album of the Year-nominated debut
album Infancy. It also arrives as the band
prepares to embark on a full UK tour this
Autumn, including two hometown shows at
Glasgow’s Oran Mor. The Ninth Wave are: Millie
Kidd (bass, vocals), Haydn Park-Patterson
(guitar, vocals), Kyalo Searle-Mbullu (keys) and
Calum Stewart (drums). Tickets @
Vincent Flatts laid down "new" music. And, if
inimitable frontman Bertie, you'll probably be
able to guess why. If not, let's just say these
things take time. The album's title, Back in the
Saddle, acknowledges Bertie getting back to
"work" after taking some time out between 2016
and 2018. While the songs are covers, each
represents something to him at this time in his
life. So, it's more than just a hotchpotch. There's
a story amid the chaos. But all you need to
know is this: there's blues, there's boozeinfused
tunes and there's a bollock-load of
through November and December of this year
offering a chance for many to finally see just
the past year. Fronted by Manning (a former
Chubby and the Gang have been leading a pack
of bands coming out of a new wave of British
Hardcore. Speed Kills was one of the critical
and blues. The album was produced by Jonah
Falco of F**ked Up, and boasts songs of deep
Pitchfork review, Stereogum praised its “massive
visceral gratification,” while The Guardian
declared them "UK punk's most vital new band"
Dean has many new plans as life gets moving again ...
despite the global pandemic, award winning Scottish singer
songwriter Dean has found various ways to keep creating
and releasing new music, finding inspiration from Leith to
Tucson via Dyess USA.
Dean is also delighted to finally see some light on the road
back to live gigs, with dates booked for a short south of
England tour with guitarist Jim Maving (including London,
Brighton and Winchester) in November, before finishing
2021 with pre Christmas shows in Glasgow and Edinburgh,
with his Southerners band and special guest Amy Geddes.
2021 started with a virtual live concert, with Calexico
musicians Joey Burns and Martin Wenk, specially recorded
long distance for Glasgow’s Celtic Connections, described by
festival director Donald Shaw as ‘a hands across the water
meeting of great songs and minds’
Sinner’s Shrine, the full album he recorded in Tucson just
before lockdown, which got the full widescreen, Panavision,
desert noir Calexico treatment, will finally be released mid
Feb 2022 (a joint release by London’s Eel Pie Records and
Netherlands’ CRS). In addition to members of Calexico,
special guests include Grant-Lee Phillips and Gaby Moreno.
While still rooted in Dean’s signature sound, each song sees
him pushing the boundaries, adding some desert noir and
Latin notes to his musical palette.
The prelude to Sinner’s Shrine – a triple EP release - The
Desert Trilogy – has been released throughout 2021,
attracted glowing reviews across genres, and whetted
appetites for the full album release.
These recordings are the latest stop on a lifetime’s
journey - from the post industrial heartlands of Scotland to
the untrammelled wide-open vistas of the American
Southwest – as Dean surrenders to the intoxicating sounds
of the US desert states, with themes of love and lust,
sinners and saints, the displaced, the wanderers and the
border ghosts.
2021 also saw Dean collaborating with Edinburgh author
Ian Rankin on a new track (Edinburgh Winter Blues) for the
recently released The Wanderer album, tribute to the late,
great Jackie Leven. The album was compiled by Michael
Weston King (My Darling Clementine) and includes
contributions from Ralph McTell, Rab Noakes, Eliza Carthy,
MADNESS :: At P&J Live, Aberdeen. Madness
have today announced their sure-to-be
triumphant return to the road with ‘The
what-a-tour this promises to be. Joining
Madness on The Ladykillers arena tour will be
very fragrant guests Squeeze. Squeeze first
formed in 1973, shortly after Chris Difford and
Glenn Tilbrook had begun their songwriting
partnership. By 1977 they had made their
recording debut and enjoyed a string of hits,
PEAT & DIESEL :: At The Ironworks, Inverness.
The story began when three Stornoway Cove’s
(Innes, Uilly and Boydie) met up in the house to
have the craic on a Saturday night playing some
music with just the dog and cat watching. After a
few tunes getting thrown across the room Boydie
started muttering a few sentences. As he is a
man of few words no attention was really given
to him until he shouted “Quick, line me out!” Not
a second to spare, a set of old broken
headphones were cable tied to a guitar stand
and this back fed the muttering into a crackly
guitar amp and out came a few cobwebs
followed shortly after with a second that nobody
had ever heard before. What came next was five
gallons of lyrics, verse after verse, song after
song – PEAT & DIESEL WAS BORN!! The songs
wont make much sense to the average person,
Cryptic Nights presents ..... EMMA SMITH
GIGnotes :: Thursday 18 November At CCA, Glasgow. 8pm. Tickets £9/
£6+bf from CCA, Glasgow on 0141 352 4900 or @ www.cca-glasgow.com
Developed during a 2021 Cryptic Cove
Park Residency, versatile composer and
improviser Emma Smith will perform
The Relentless Approach of Better
Times', a live solo double bass and
electronics soundtrack accompanying a
screening of a film on her work with
Musicians Without Borders in Palestine
and El Salvador on Thursday 18
November for Cryptic Nights.
A classically trained double bassist, Emma’s practice builds
on the language of classical music and explores the storytelling
aspect of folk music from different parts of the
world.
“The Relentless Approach of Better Times is my testimony
to the importance of solid, galvanised, positivity action as
the only way through multiple current global crises” says
Emma.
“A project first started in 2018 with OCM, it has been a
tough and very personal journey creating and developing
this work, which would have been shelved during the
pandemic were it not for the unwavering support of
Cryptic - definitely an easier option but who said the easy
option was the right one?”
Cryptic Artistic Director, Cathie Boyd, says: “Cryptic is
thrilled to continue supporting the exciting young Scottish
talent Hammy Sgìth, following his Sonic Bites event earlier
in the year, and the following month we will also present
double bassist Emma Smith fresh from her 2021 Cryptic
Cove Park autumn residency”. Cryptic Nights is all about
discovering and nurturing boundary-breaking artists
producing diverse and imaginative music performances and
this upcoming programme will do just that.”
Now in its twelfth year, Cryptic Nights is a regular series of
events presented by Cryptic supporting emerging artists to
cross creative boundaries with live music, visual and sonic
art, film and new media. Since 2019 Cryptic Nights has
presented over 300 Scottish-based artists including Anna
Meredith, Rachel MacLean, Oliver Coates, Yann Seznec and
SHHE.
Tickets £9/£6 + booking fee from CCA, Glasgow on 0141
2019. In addition to performing live, the band
released a number of singles in their first year
together, many of which arrived with
accompanying videos. Debut single St Elmo was
followed by Vibrations, Chameleon and
Automatic Love, the latter being reviewed as a
'bruising, belter of a song'. In addition to these
videos, Echo Machine collaborated with Thai
singer Janine Alissa Wollmann on a cover of the
Billie Eilish track Bad Guy, producing an
accompanying music video. Their single
'Headlights' was also well-reviewed, being
described as 'infectious discowave'. The success
of the band in 2019 prompted BBC radio
presenter, Vic Galloway, to name the band as
one of his 25 Scottish Artists to Watch in 2020.
In January 2020 the band announced that their
debut album would be called Instant
Transmissions.
LION HEAD :: At Mac Arts, Galashiels. Wrest
making music from Edinburgh's Old Town. Their
lyrics and heartfelt melodies, reminiscent of
Idlewild, Snow Patrol and We Were Promised
10 DECEMBER
CHUBBY AND THE GANG :: At Think Tank,
Newcastle.
It received an 8.0
Pitchfork review, Stereogum praised its “massive
barroom gang choruses, power chords at
breakneck tempos, rock spelled R-A-W-K and
visceral gratification,” while The Guardian
declared them "UK punk's most vital new band"
and NME called them "the scene's clear frontrunners"
and Speed Kills "a thrilling whiteknuckle
ride through multiple flavours of
hardcore punk".
DEAN OWENS with JIM MAVING :: At
Hemelvaart, Ayton, Berwickshire. Dean Owens is
delighted to finally see some light on the road
back to live gigs, with dates booked for a short
south of England tour with guitarist Jim Maving
in November, before finishing 2021 with pre
Christmas shows in Glasgow and Edinburgh,
with his Southerners band and special guest
Amy Geddes.
19 MARCH
TROY REDFERN on tour with 'WILLE & THE
BANDITS' :: At The Cluny, Newcastle. Slide
guitarist and singer-songwriter, Troy Redfern,
dubbed by the British press as “the king of slide
guitar,". Troy cut his teeth and refined his style
over the last few years, playing festival main
stages and blazing a trail across Europe,
Scandinavia, and Russia. He’s also become a
well-known draw on the UK Blues Rock festival
circuit, playing alongside rock luminaries
including Robert Plant. “Troy is a passionate,
intense, free-spirited musician whose ferocious
slide guitar style twists and turns timeless
themes and ideas to his own ends. He’s a
musical visionary unafraid to trample on the
boundaries of restricting labels,” said Blues
Matters Magazine. The forthcoming studio album
is a culmination everything Troy has learnt so
far on his musical journey, and, more
importantly, brings into sharp focus a much
tighter song-writing and more visceral, muscular
production style. Tickets @
26 MAY
THE LOVELY EGGS :: At The Cluny, Newcastle.
Back in the old world at the start of 2020, our
psychedelic punk heroes The Lovely Eggs were
primed to release their new album ‘I Am
Moron’ – their greatest work yet, over-flowing
with political venom and fresh ideas, set to a
gloriously independent noise. Then, of course,
the pandemic happened. The Lovely Eggs
pushed ahead, and the album came out to
critical-acclaim and indie chart-topping status,
but their plans to tour it far and wide were
obviously scuppered. At first, their UK tour was
rescheduled to just two months later, thinking
there’s no way the pandemic could last more
than a few weeks…. Fast forward a year, their
UK tour has been rebooked independently by the
band at least five times and The Lovely Eggs are
still yet to play the new album live, but new tour
dates are now on sale for 2022.
