RUNRIG’s ‘The Cutter’ - Seonaidh Beag Iain :: 8.15pm
on BBC ALBA. The Cutter is one of Scottish band Runrig’s
best-known songs, from the album that delivered their
breakthrough in 1987, The Cutter And The Clan. We meet
the 'Johnny' referred to in the words. Johnny (Seonaidh)
Morrison is from the isle of North Uist. He has lived in
Ontario, Canada for 56 years but has never lost his native
Gaelic. When he recalls the Runrig boys, it’s with a chuckle
– still surprised that they wrote one of their famous songs
all about him. As a young man, Seonaidh was a lorry driver
in the local community. Young brothers Calum and Rory
MacDonald formed part of a gang of children who would
leap aboard Seonaidh’s lorry for a free ride at every
opportunity. And they’d go with him back and forth to the
moors as loads of peat were taken home to families for
winter fuel. The MacDonald lads became Runrig. We hear
how Seonaidh left Uist for Canada, how he felt about the
'The Cutter' at the time and how it now makes him feel,
when he plays the track on its original vinyl copy gifted by
the boys.
Where You're Meant to Be with AIDAN
MOFFAT :: 10.30pm on BBC Scotland. Scottish cultpop
raconteur Aidan Moffat, frontman of indie band
Arab Strap - and best known for his no-holds-barred
lyrics about sex, drugs and male anxiety - sets out to
explore his country's past by rewriting and touring its
oldest songs. It's meant to be a tour that allows
Moffat to explore the roots of his country. It's meant
to be a trip that celebrates Scotland's communities
and lore. But then he meets Sheila Stewart - a 79-
year-old force of nature and travelling balladeer
whose life, and unexpected death, upturns Moffat's
musical assumptions. He believes these old songs are
ripe for updating against a modern urban backdrop.
She does not. With Sheila's criticism ringing in his
ears, the bold Moffat embarks on a trip around
Scotland's remote parts that proves to be as uncanny
as the Scottish weather. He finds himself caught up in
a feud between two monster hunters at Loch Ness,
singing to a dismissive Hebridean farmer in his
kitchen, and holding court with a mob of ancient
warriors in a Highland graveyard. When Moffat's tour
comes full circle, back to his hometown of Glasgow,
he ends up in the legendary Barrowland Ballroom: the
best loved rock stage in the world, and the setting for
an unlikely final showdown, in a funny film about
music and death.
The Culture Scene - Zimbabwean Rapper EYVE
MAD :: 11.45pm on BBC Scotland. Eyve Madyise is a
rapper/singer-songwriter and a refugee who has
adopted Glasgow as home. Originally from Zimbabwe,
Eyve first came to London with her family, but has
since settled in Glasgow on her own. As she prepares
to launch the lead single from her second EP, Sista!
Beyond the Sky Isn’t the Limit, Eyve peels back the
layers of her songwriting process, from acapella
singing and writing lyrics in the Hidden Gardens, to
going into the music studio to reveal how she made
latest single, Um, Indecisive. At the mixing desk,
Eyve and producer Axor - aka Sam - show how they
built her latest track. Eyve talks about the hurt she
felt being rejected by her family as a queer woman,
and how anger influenced her music for a long time.
Through her genre-defying music, Eyve is exploring
her identity and weaving deep-rooted threads of her
Zimbabwean heritage together with ballroom culture.
The Culture Scene follows the singer as she gets
dressed up and ready for her single launch at
Transmission Gallery in Central Glasgow, where she
performs her latest single for an excited audience.
writes what I see in the world right now,” she
loss, she found and followed the beacon of new
See the Stars, collects ten sparkling jewels of
Gauthier songcraft reflecting both love and loss.
Glasgow songwriter Kim Grant who found her moniker
within the pages of George Eliot’s Silas Marner. Grant
identifies with the idea of being a weaver (which the
support WILDFIRE and ELD VARG :: At
MacArts, Bridge Street, Galashiels, TD1 1SP.
Laser guided riffs n' hooks that kill. No
apologies, no compromise! 2023 was a hectic
year for the five piece, they delivered their
debut EP Crashdive, followed by numerous live
dates across the UK and Europe. They arrive at
MacArts with plaudits from no less than Judas
Priest's KK Downing! All the recommendation we
need!
BOMBSKARE :: At MacArts, Bridge Street,
Galashiels, TD1 1SP. 7.30pm. Introducing the
bishops of bounce, the sorcerers of skank, the
undisputed masters of Scottish death reggae,
the one and only Bombskare the closest thing
you'll see to an actual northern powerhouse.
This nine headed ska demon has been tearing
up stages the length and breadth of the British
Isles since before The Crusades. Renowned for
their technical prowess as much as their
infectious ska anthems, they combine lush,
threepart harmonies with choppy guitar attacks
and an explosive horn section to truly blow the
audience away.
