From The Editor's Desk
Phoebe, the youth arm of the Women’s Ministries Department was developed by the
Women’s Ministries Director, Sister Claudia Bailey. Her vision was to see young women
actively involved in ministry and women’s issues. This idea was birthed on the 13th day of
April, 2019 with the launch of the Purple Door. Young women shared in a talk show
programme, speaking on issues impacting young women in the church.
In September 2019 at the Women’s Ministries Convention held at the Old Harbour Seventhday
Adventist church, Phoebe was officially launched. Over one hundred Phoebes marched
into Sydenham church wearing their iconic aqua shirts with black skirts, white skirts and
even mustard, worn by the Linstead Seventh-day Adventist church. They were beaming
with joy and the older ladies felt a sense of pride seeing so many young women take their
rightful place in women’s ministries.
Like Paul, Sis. Claudia Bailey commends the Phoebes for staying the course since their early
beginnings in 2019 and now throughout a most trying time for the world and the church at
large. As we end this final quarter of 2021, we salute you Phoebes for being a beacon of
light for Christ.
“I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon of the church in Cenchreae. I ask you to
receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of his people and to give her any help she may need
from you, for she has been the benefactor of many people, including me.” (Rom. 16:1-2)

Is it wrong to lash out against
grievous things that happen to
anyone such as rape, incest, and
physical abuses? Is it a wrong
reaction as a Christian?
Allia Gordon
A very grievous story is told in 2 Samuel 13 about how Amnon claimed he loved his
half-sister, Tamar, and begged their father David to send her to cook and feed him
because he was ill. She did what was requested and while she was about to feed
him, he proceeded to rape her. After raping her, his love turned to hate for her.
Absalom, Tamar’s brother, rescued her and after two years of plotting, killed
Amnon. Their father David was angry when he heard the report of the rape and
incest in his family, but he also mourned the killing of Amnon.
The reaction to grievous sins should evoke outrage and anger, these natural
emotional reactions. A Christian is not immune to these feelings and the Bible
doesn’t label them as a sin but encourages us to be slow to wrath and anger
(Proverbs 14:29; 15:18 and James 1:19).
The thing is, these sins are indeed grievous, as it they violates the being of a
person and leaves life-long scars., and we We should hate these sins, but we have
to fight the urge to hate the sinner. Jesus says in Mathew 5:43-45 “I say to you, love
your enemies, … that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His
sun rise on the evil and on the good....” We must be like our Heavenly Father.

The Physician’s Touch
Hello doctor, I am Jane Doe.
I have been experiencing a series of terrible cramps most days when I walk. It is not
consecutive in a day but it happens at least twice per week. I would oftentimes see a
discharge from my body that is white. What could be the cause of this?
Could you shed some light on period pains and what usually causes intense period pain? Is
there any over-the-counter medication that you would recommend for treating intense
period pains? Apart from hormonal problems and fibroids, what else could cause irregular
periods?
Period or menstrual pains are as a result of the contraction of the uterus or womb as the
inner lining from it is shed. This happens in a cyclic manner and defers from woman to
woman. So the amount of time from one period to the next varies.
The pain which occurs with menstruation is caused by the contraction of the uterus and the
severity of these contractions is not the same for every woman. A number of factors affect the
intensity of these contractions. Stress, alcohol, caffeine and smoking are some things which
can worsen menstrual pains.
It is also often the norm that as young girls begin to experience the changes in their bodies
associated with puberty and the new changes as it relates to the levels of special hormones in
their bodies, that their periods may be more painful and somewhat irregular initially.
However, there are conditions which can cause very severe menstrual pain along with other
incapacitating symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea and generalized weakness along with
pain in the back, anus and hips. These conditions include endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory
disease, fibroids and certain hormonal problems.
Common medications which can be used to assist with menstrual cramps include aspirin,
ibuprofen, panadol which are all over-the-counter. If more potent medications are needed
then those would need to be prescribed by a doctor. It sometimes help to start medication a
day or two before your period is expected to begin.
Every woman who continues to experience severe menstrual cramps should be evaluated by a
doctor as this may be a symptom of another medical issue.

Have you ever felt forsaken by God? Have
you ever felt that you were standing in a
spiritual warfare without any armour or
Heavenly support? This feeling came upon
me the evening of March 4, 2020 when my
stepfather was gunned down in the
parking lot of his place of employment. It
did not help that I was 5 months pregnant
and the Sunday following his death was
my scheduled gender reveal. I have never
cried so much, feared so much, questioned
God so much. My life had changed.
Shortly after his death, covid-19 reached
the shores of Jamaica and with all the
drama surrounding the process of a
murder, my family had to face the impacts
of this deadly virus.
I was experiencing a spiritual searching;
not sure what to expect out of this life.
During this time of spiritual low, my church
family, especially my Pastor and my elders,
visited and prayed for me and my family. I
remember often feeling so emotionally
weak that I would have to leave my desk at
work to hide in the bathroom and cry.
I could not sing certain hymns nor read
certain scriptures without crying. Paranoia
came to stress me out even more. I could
not sleep properly at nights because I was
up at the sound of every strange sound,
looking, wondering if the killer had us next
on his list. Was there a list? Who next in the
family would be gunned down; who next?

Phoebe - Roshania Tully and Osbourne Ximinis
1. Take us to where you first met? We first
met at Linstead the SDA church. I had just
returned from university and was walking
down the stairs, whenand I saw him standing
at the flagpole. I noticed he had nice eyes but
no feeling or anything. Another Sabbath, I
saw him, and he was standing alone and I
wondered why none of these young ladies
did not notice don’t see this nice young man
to date him.
2. How long ago was that? 9 1/2 years ago
3. When did you first develop feelings for him?
My feelings for him started to grow when one of
my friends invited me to ADFEL lunch and he was
there. Unfortunately, his ex-girlfriend came, and he
went to talk to her. I felt funny but I did not know
why I felt that way. I can remember he would
always accompany me to the hairdresser, because
we became good friends. One of his friends who
liked me [but I did not like his friend] started to
come around. When he saw his friend trying to
pursue me, he backed off. He stopped
accompanying me to the hairdresser and when I
asked him why he said he did not want to stand in
the way of his friend. I did not like his friend
though. I realized I missed his company. I decided
to tell his friend I was not interested and then I
went to visit Osbourne at his house, and I told him
how I felt about him.
4. When did you know he was the right one
for you? I prayed about it because I did not
want a long-term relationship if it was not
going to work out. I got really sick shortly
thereafter. He called me that evening when he
was at practice groupsinging rehearsals. When
he finished rehearsals practice, he found his
way to my house and called me to say he was
outside. I was confused [about] how he knew
where I lived. I realized he had taken a taxi to
get there. He told me he was not happy I was
sick. That was the first time he told me he loved
me. I was shocked and did not respond. He left
thereafter. I was wondering if this was God
answering the prayer I had prayed that day.
5. Tell us something special about him
that you admire
I love the way he gives self-less love to me
and how honest he is with me. He speaks to
me in love; never angry with me. He is always
there for me and chooses to make me
happy. He has me as his priority.

6. How did he propose? One day his family was having
a reunion event. I was at work, but he wanted me there.
I went home and changed my clothes and talkedwas
talking to with God because I knew he was going to
propose. When I reached at the family reunion, I did
not see him. I walked around the entire house looking
for him, but I found him nowhere. Then he came up
behind me and when I heard his voice I turned around
and saw him on one knee. He said, “Roshania Annise
Tully, will you marry me?”
7. What was your response like?
Were you crying/laughing? I said yes!
I was laughing.
8. Is it all that you were hoping for? It
was nothing like I was hoping for but
because I love him it was perfect
anyway.

of “TheBeauty “The warmth of true friendship, the love that binds heart to heart is a
foretaste of the joys of heaven.” The Ministry of healing- Ellen G.
White.
According to the article entitled Phases of Friendship, by the website,
Brittanica.com, the friendship across individuals of all ages, form,
evolve and sometimes dissolve over time. The latest on duration of
the various phases of a friendship varies across individuals and
circumstances.
In an article by Jermaine Tucker entitled Stages of friendship, he
states that there are five stages of friendships; strangers,
acquaintances, casual friend, close friend, and intimate friend.
Strangers, is the first of the phases and in this phase first impression
matters because it is the birth of friendship.
In the case of an acquaintance you may know of the person, you only
know their name because you work with them or you know who they
hang out with.
Casual friends meet more frequently and each other praise and
support for achievements. However, they are not emotionally
invested. Close friends understand each other, are aware of each
other's family and intimate life, and they both help each other to
accomplish life goals.
Intimate friendship is attainted overtime through shared experiences
and vulnerability with each other, sharing deepest secrets, biggest
insecurities and fears.
