Win a
Lancashire Day
Hamper!
To celebrate Lancashire Day on Saturday 27th November
Local Life is bestowing one of our readers with a custombuilt
luxury hamper, chockfull of goods produced in
Lancashire.
Some of the contents are made by producers who are
household names, such as Uncle Joe’s in Wigan and
Bartons in St Helens, whilst others are less well known.
All the goodies have one thing in common though; they
are produced within Lancashire’s historic county palatine,
which includes the large cities of Manchester and
Liverpool as well as the Furness and Cartmel peninsulas
in the Lake District.
As you can see from the main image, the goods include
cheeses, cakes, chocolate, jams and local honey, biscuits,
seafood, pudding, sauces and pickles, crisps and, of
course, Bury’s best black pudding. Lancastrians with
a thirst can indulge in gin, beer or a glass of locally
produced dandelion and burdock!
Lancashire Day is celebrated on the 27th November every
year because 726 years ago in 1295, it was on this day that
the first elected representatives from Lancashire were
called to Westminster by King Edward I to attend what
later became known as ‘The Model Parliament’.
A proclamation is read out by town criers throughout the
county on Lancashire Day and part of this proclamation
quotes the following;
Throughout the County Palatine, from the Furness Fells
to the River Mersey, from the Irish Sea to the Pennines, this
day shall ever mark the people’s pleasure in that excellent
distinction - true Lancastrians, proud of the Red Rose and
loyal to our Sovereign Duke.
Even with much local opposition, on April Fool’s Day
in 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, the
southern part of the geographic county was transferred
to the two newly established metropolitan counties of
Merseyside and Greater Manchester. On the same day,
the county of Cumbria came into being and Warrington
was incorporated into Cheshire.
