affecting schools’ foodservice operations. Beth Wallace, president of
the School Nutrition Association and executive director of food and
nutrition services in Colorado’s Jeffco Public Schools, said her district
typically has about 450 employees, but now has about 98 vacancies.

students interviewed by over 200 teachers. These issues are promoted
by the media and policymakers as the primary challenges in K-12
education, but those closest to the classroom say the biggest concerns
are rundown school facilities and an “overstuffed curriculum” that lacks
opportunity for personal connection and interest-based exploration,
