2021 ROCKY MOUNTAIN EMMY ® AWARDS
Letter from Awards Chair
Idon’t really want to talk much about 2021, but
it’s part of the job.
First, I need to thank the members of the
Awards Committee who did so much extra work
this year. They picked up a lot of slack for me.
They deserve an incredible amount of personal
and professional gratitude. Awards Vice Chair,
Donna Rossi, Executive Director Lara Gates,
Award Committee members Bob Adlhoch, Chuck
Emmert, Mike Headrick, Micah Johnson, Carol
Lynde, Doug Mummert and Özlem Özgur, thank
you from the bottom of my heart.
Their job was made even tougher this year with
the many changes we implemented. We divided
most content categories into four sub-categories
-- News No (Production) Time Limit; News Single
Shift; Content Long Form and Content Short
From. We offered 130 categories and subcategories.
In some instances, we merged sub-categories after the deadline when
there were insufficient entries for a fair competition. We did not, however, merge
news and non-news. We also offered a Technical Achievement category for the first
time, to acknowledge the innovation used to overcome the difficulties in delivering
content to the viewer in these challenging times.
Every one of the 898 entries was vetted for potential eligibility and rules violations by
the Awards Committee. Entries were judged by at least seven qualified peers from
nine other chapters. We were one of a small number of chapters that participated
in a test of bilingual judging in several news categories. In these cases, at least 10
qualified peer judges reviewed all entries. Judges came equally from both English
and Spanish language Newsrooms from across the country. The more things
changed in 2021…the more they were different. And we believe better.
Let me thank all those chapter members who judged other chapter’s entries. You
provide an invaluable service to our chapter and to the entire NATAS community.
Nearly 40% of our entrants judged in 2021. It is a great way to discover new and
creative ways of delivering content. There may be nothing new under the sun, but
there are always different ways of presenting it. I challenge those members who
haven’t judged to try it. You’ll like it.
The Awards Committee is available to all broadcasters in this region. We will respond
to all inquiries and questions and will guide everyone who needs assistance through
the process.
Enjoy the Gala. Together we will honor the nominees and celebrate the recipients.
Congratulations.
