but it’s not personal. Sometimes it<br />
seems like vets still need something<br />
to fight, so why not fight the ocean?<br />
Sooner or later it’ll wear you out.<br />
“One of my friends who is also a vet<br />
sometimes describes it as a rat inside<br />
you, trying to claw its way out, but<br />
things like this provide a way to soothe<br />
the rat,” Lusk continued.<br />
Hasselschwert said that while surfing<br />
is a great activity, it’s important to<br />
start with a proper lesson, especially<br />
on the <strong>Oregon</strong> coast, which can<br />
have particularly harsh conditions<br />
depending on the time of year.<br />
Shilo, who himself is a U.S. Army<br />
veteran who served in Iraq, was one<br />
of the event’s participants that hit the<br />
water for the first time Friday. Before<br />
the event began, he wasn’t sure if he<br />
would hit the water, but he ended<br />
putting on a wet suit for a few trips<br />
into the surf before calling it a day.<br />
Shilo said that as an outreach specialist,<br />
he often keeps an eye out for events<br />
like these that Wounded Warriors can<br />
help support, noting that the national<br />
group is always looking for new ways to<br />
help veterans, whether that’s through<br />
introducing them to new activities,<br />
finding them a suitable community to<br />
interact with or even matching them<br />
up with someone they can talk to for<br />
awhile.<br />
“While I’m based out of the Tacoma<br />
office, we work with the vet centers<br />
down here all the time to put on these<br />
events for wounded warriors who<br />
might want to participate,” Shilo said.<br />
This year’s participants spent a couple<br />
hours learning the basics of surfing<br />
and riding small waves at Agate Beach,<br />
after which they returned to Ossies for<br />
a free barbecue before wrapping up the<br />
day.<br />
