of Wednesday, those

routes remained closed,

with no anticipated

timeline for reopening.

“Our main lane is B.C.

to Alberta, so a lot of

customers where we’re

normally distributing to

their stores there — let’s

say large grocery chains

and furniture stores —

what we’re having to do

is pick the orders, store

them into the warehouse

and hold them until the

highway opens again,”

18 Wheels Logistics

CEO Adrian Wen said

Tuesday morning.

“Because of that, we’ve

had to take on extra

warehouse space just to

accommodate this.

We’re already behind

two days, which is

roughly 400 pallets a

day. Every day it adds

up to about 4,000

square feet of extra

storage space required.”

A significant proportion

of goods entering

Alberta come via the

port of Vancouver, the

fourth-largest port in

North America, which

moves $550 million in

cargo each day.

The port said that all rail

access had been cut

due to floods and

landslides, shutting rail

routes operated by

Canadian Pacific

Railway and Canadian

National Railway. The

Several other supplychain

bottlenecks had

already led to delays at

the port during the

COVID-19 pandemic,

said Edy Wong at the

University of Alberta’s

Alberta School of

Business, including a

shortage of drivers and

an insufficient capacity

to unload freight from

ships. The highway and

rail closures add another

blow.

“This road closure is

adding to this problem,

so we can expect a lot

of shortages to

continue,” Wong said.

“It’s something that’s

not good timing for us,

because of the problem

we’re facing right now. It

will take some time to

clear up the backlog . .

. We’re going to have

shortages for the next

little while. This is not

going away.”

Consumers can expect

to see an increase in

prices and potentially

empty shelves this

holiday season, Wong

said, exacerbating

current inflation rates

that sit at a near twodecade

high. He added

there’s a chance some

retailers won’t receive

Christmas shipments

until the holiday has

passed.

Exports out of Canada

and into Asia via

Vancouver are also a

concern, Wong added.

The operating company

B.C. Transportation

Minister Rob Fleming

said Highway 3 is

expected to be the first

road connection to

Vancouver to reopen,

with it yet to be seen

whether the highway will

be open by the end of

the weekend. For the

Trans-Canada and

Coquihalla highways,

which sustained

extensive damage,

significant repairs are

needed that will further

delay reopening.

“We fully recognize how

important it is right now

in British Columbia to

reopen the road

connections from the

Lower Mainland to the

Interior to get the supply

chain moving again,”

Fleming said.

“We’re also working with

Transport Canada to reestablish

supply chains

for communities that

currently are cut off.

This will begin with the

essential movement of

goods and supplies.”

The highway closures

are “potentially quite

dire,” said Martin Gooch

with the Value Chain

Management

International consulting

firm. He described the

existing supply chain

system as a “hub and

spokes,” where hubs

such as the port of

Vancouver receive

goods for both importing

into Canada and

exporting overseas.

Disruptions caused by

extreme weather

indicate investments

must be made to help

supply chains adapt in

the face of climate

change, Gooch said.

The extreme flooding in

B.C. comes only

months after wildfires in

the province levelled the

village of Lytton and

temporarily halted CP

and CN rail traffic in the

area.

“Our supply chain has

served us very well. It

has been very good for

us in enabling efficient

and effective food

distribution, though it

does have weak spots,”

Gooch said.

“It doesn’t take much of

a break in the system

to create essentially

dire results, and a lot of

discussion is about,

how do we redesign

supply systems to be

flexible to respond to

these unexpected

weather systems,

which are expected to

become more common

as climate change

occurs.

“It speaks to a need to

address climate change

however we can, to

mitigate it.”

Redesigning B.C.’s

supply chain could

involve finding ways to

create additional

distribution hubs to the

Though highways

remain open to the

south of Vancouver,

passing through

Washington state,

those roads aren’t

considered a substitute

for domestic

transportation.

Wen said it’s

theoretically possible to

complete some

shipments from

Vancouver to Alberta

through the United

States, but this can

come at a significant

expense to clients,

running at an extra $2

per mile. Clearing

customs adds another

logistical and financial

hurdle, with the option

unavailable for

companies receiving

products such as

alcohol.

Regardless,

Wong said some

U.S. “won’t be enough”

to resolve supply-chain

woes caused by

domestic

closures.

Where did you get that idea? - By Kathryn Hotte, Professional

training & facilitation expert and small business advisor

Starting and growing a small business is

daunting at the best of times, in today’s

climate it warrants some serious thought.

Let’s face it many businesses start with

nothing more than an idea and then they

‘wing it’, relying on the fact that they will

figure it out as they go. This can set up the

business to fail, infact most don’t make it

to their third year of business. Hotte

Consulting will be featuring a series of

articles to help navigate through the start

up process and beyond ensuring that you

have a better chance of success.

Where did you get that idea?

So you have a business idea, now

what?

There are some pretty crazy business

concepts and products out there. Have you

heard of the website, “Reserve a Spot in

Heaven”, where for $13.79 you can have a

reservation in heaven and you can get

refunds if you don’t make it? What about,

“The Excused Absence Network”? For $25

you can have a fake doctor’s note or jury

summons request. And who can

remember the famous Pet Rock. That’s

right a rock complete with care and feeding

instructions. All of these business ideas

were real, so real in fact that they were

making money for the entrepreneur that

came up with the idea. In the first 6 months

The Pet Rock Company made a profit of

$15 million!

Not all of us would be willing to take the

risk with a crazy idea like the ones

mentioned abovehowever there are some

innovative products and business

conceptscreated in Canada. The

snowmobile, the zipper, the Wonderbra

and of course the telephone are just a few

Canadian inventions, not to mention our old

stand-by; Tim Horton’s (although not

Canadian anymore). So how does one

come up with the next great business idea,

or just a good business opportunity, to start

making some real money to pay the bills?

I always say, “I can have five ideas by noon

tomorrow, doesn’t mean that I’ll act on any

of them”. And that’s the key; action. Here

are some tips to get you started on your

idea?

Find a need, fill the need.

Instead of asking yourself, “Why don’t they

invent this, it sure would make my life

easier” you could be saying, “I can do this,

all I need is that”. Any product or service

that fills a need or solves a problem is a

good place to start when thinking about a

business idea. Many successful

entrepreneurs have started their own

businesses solving a personal need.

Spotting demographic and social

trends.

Back in 2013 the BDC; Business

Métis Nation of Alberta condemns Premier Kenney’s

financial support of illegitimate organizations

Edmonton,

(AB) – The Métis

Nation of Alberta,

the only democratically

elected government

of the

Métis Nation within

Alberta, rejects Premier

Jason

Kenney’s public

show of support

and financial commitment

for outside

organizations

claiming to represent

Métis interests.

“Today, Premier

Kenney is

standing with a

handful of unaccountable,

undemocratic

and illegitimate

organizations

to challenge

federal legislation

that is designed to

ensure we are consulted

on projects

that protect our

Métis rights and

way of life,” said

MNA President

Audrey Poitras. “As

the democratically

elected representatives

of Métis citizens

in Alberta, we

want to make it

clear that if these

issues are brought

before the courts,

the MNA will be

there to underscore

how these individuals

and organizations

do not represent

Alberta Métis.

The courts will scrutinize

the credibility

of these claims. It is

unfortunate that the

Premier of this

province has not.”

“This is a bad decision

by the Premier

and represents a

clear misuse of

public money,”

added President

Poitras. “These organizations

are not

elected or accountable

to anyone and

are made up of non-

Métis individuals.

These organizations

do not speak

for the Métis Nation,

theMétis

people or Métis

communities in

Alberta.”

Since 1928,

the MNA has represented

the rights

and interests of

Alberta Métis

through democratic

self-government

structures at the local,

regional and

provincial levels.

Today, the MNA has

over 51,000 registered

citizens. In

2019, the MNA

signed a historic

agreement with

Canada confirming

the MNA as the only

recognized, accountable

and

democratically

elected government

of Métis citizens

in Alberta.

Development Bank of Canada, identified

FiveMust Watch Trends that were to shape

the future of Canadian business; The

Internet Revolution, the ‘Health Mania’, the

‘Made in Canada’ Advantage,

Customization is King and the Thrifty

Consumer. These were the trends that I

reiterated to clients during a consultation.

Capitalizing on these trends meant a

greater opportunity for success and many

businesses thrived as a result. In 2017

another BDC study announced Six

emerging trends that will fundamentally

reshape Canada’s future business

landscape; The aging workforce, the rise

of the millennial generation, a more

culturally diverse population, the growth of

virtual marketplaces, the automation of

business activities and the rise of the data

economy. Today, with the pandemic taking

precedent, the paradigm has shifted and

so with the BDC’s most recent study it

seems that businesses are adapting with

the following five priorities in mind; Putting

finances in order, taking advantage of

technology to stay competitive, focusing on

telework, Selling online and Reviving

growth.

When spotting these trends, you can make

logical predictions as to what kinds of

products or services will be in demand in

the future.

Build a better something!

Improve on an existing product or service.

One popular option is to leave your job to

start your own business because you know

you can do better. Be careful that you don’t

burn any bridges though, set yourself up

as a supplier rather than a competitor.

And more…

Combine two successful ideas; Home

Depot has had Harvey’s restaurants in their

stores and Chapters has Starbucks.

Finding uses for old things;the focus here

might beusing recycled materials to repurpose

something or replacing imported

goods with local ones, ask local

businesses if they have problems locating

suppliers. Could you fill their needs?

How do I know whether my idea has any

promise?

One great tool I recommend to clients is

The Idea Napkin. Developed by Dr. Alex

Bruton, an American entrepreneur and

educator, this tool gets your idea out of your

head and onto paper. It helps you see the

possibilities and opportunities and it

assess the impact and the feasibility of

your idea however, even this tool needs to

be reviewed and critiqued before moving

forward.

There are plenty of ideas out there and if

you want to start a business but don’t know

where to start I have a list of 55 Business

Ideas to start up for under $5,000!

Hot and coal: COP26 wraps up

short of climate target but high

on blame games

A success for India – is how

Union environment, forest & climate

change minister Bhupender Yadav described

the UN global climate summit

as it ended. And yet, India is facing a lot

of criticism for pushing through a late

revision in the Glasgow Climate Pact,

which now has countries agreeing to

“phase down” unabated coal, instead of

“phase out”. No doubt this is momentous

language, as this is the first time

coal and fossil fuels are being mentioned

in a COP deal. But overall COP26 has

failed to live up to its billing as the “last,

best hope” to limit this century’s global

warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial

levels. The blame games being played

against this backdrop are poor in climate

finance and rich in hypocrisies.

As their lion’s share of cumulative

emissions indicates, rich countries

grew rich on fossil fuels and now they

are also more comfortably placed to transition

to renewables at scale. In the US

stagnant electricity demand plus lower

prices of natural gas and renewables

have been shutting down the coal plants,

and yet it hasn’t presented any details

to end coal, as if leaving the transition

timeline all to the market. Contrast its

situation to India, where IEA forecasts

the largest increase in energy demand

of any country over the next 20 years,

where coal is plentiful, its mining employs

over 2 million people, and sensitivity

to the cost of capital for energy transitions

is very high.

That rich countries continue to

go slow on the Paris finance commitment

bodes ill for the bigger ask being

put up by developing countries now. But

as climate change manifests around us

from the seas to the sky, we don’t really

have the luxury of waiting around for

outside help. India’s Glasgow commitments,

including meeting 50% of the

electricity requirement through renewable

sources by 2030, already reflect

one of the most rapid decarbonisations

of the sector in the world, but we can

and should do much more, for our own

sake.

Nuclear energy is one cost-effective

alternative that we should

optimise. It forms only 2% of the share

of energy in electricity production in India

as compared to 4% in China, 18% in

Russia, 19% in the US and 72% in

France. As for how much COP26 finally

delivers, it completely depends on how

different governments finally finesse

their pledges. The goal of ending coal

will depend on sincerity in phasing it

down first.

Great recognition - Gunjan

Edmonton(ATB): “I am really

overwhelmed with the great

recognition” expressed Ms. Gunjan

Sharma, President of Council of India

Societies of Edmonton while receiving

the plaque from Mr G Ajith Kumar,

Counsel, Consulate General of India,

Vancouver last week at India Center,

Edmonton.

High Commissioner of India to

Canada, Excellency Ajay Bisaria has

presented the plaque to Council of India

Societies of Edmonton (CISE) for their

exemplary service to the Indian

community in Canada and for promoting

the cause of India-Canada friendship.

Council organise the annual Consular

Camps every year for issuance of Life

Certificates to the pensioners of Indian

origin to enable them to get their pension

due continually.

“It a very beneficial to get Consulate staff

at Edmonton and help our seniors to

obtain Life Certificates hassles free and

instantly” stated Dhiru Ladwa, Vice

President (Admn).

Volunteers of Millwoods Ex Serviceman

Association, Edmonton provide their

support in facilitating the issuance of

certificates in a smooth manner.

“I am really impressed the way whole

process is conducted and senior citizens

do not experience inconvenience”

expressed Raj Babbar, octogenarian.

One of the objectives of CISE is to

provide service to the Indian Community

in areas such as settlement of

immigrants, safeguard the welfare of

senior citizens, counseling for vulnerable

groups such as abused women,

assistance to Indian students in

Edmonton etc. Kudos goes to CISE

executive and community look forward

to more such initiatives.
