September was gone in a flash!
It’s already October! Soon, Thanksgiving celebrations and
Christmas will be coming up and before you know it, a whole new
year will begin!
We have been very caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday
life here at the Chamber. We have been planning exciting events
and joining in on the celebrations and openings of new businesses
here in Lake Placid. All the while, time has been flying by. It stops
for no man… or woman. Sometimes we can just be too busy to
enjoy the small stuff and it’s then that time really slips away quickly.
A famous quote by Harvey Mackay says “Time is free, but it’s
priceless. You can’t own it, but you can use it. You can’t keep it,
but you can spend it. Once you’ve lost it you can never get it back.”
Those words ring so true, and really hits home for us at the
Chamber as we mourn the loss of our Chamber Director’s husband,
Larry, who unexpectedly passed away on October 10 th .
In these next few months that are often considered the busiest time
of the year, let’s all try to slow down just a little bit. Let’s try to
enjoy little everyday moments that make life wonderful. Let’s tell
our loved ones that we love them a little bit more often. Let’s
forgive a little bit quicker and hate a whole lot less. Let’s try hard to
find joy in the everyday things that we so often take for granted. The
giggle of a child, the smell of a beautiful flower or the taste of your
favorite supper time meal. Talking with a friend on the phone or
meeting up for coffee. Relishing in a good tight hug from a loved
one. Most importantly, let’s really try to spend quality time with
those that we hold most dear, because we are not promised
tomorrow, and time waits on no man…or woman.
Find the Hidden Object Competition
Every month we will hide a symbol of a WiFi connection. Which symbolizes the connection between the
Chamber and it’s members. Look for the hidden symbol throughout the newsletter each month and when you
find it, send us an email at information@lpfla.com and tell us where it is (Page and general vicinity on the
page.) If correct, you will be entered into a drawing for a gift from one of our member businesses. Prizes will
vary from month to month.
Entry emails must contain the edition of newsletter that the symbol was found in (Month) and the finders name
along with the best way to contact that person. Drawings will be held on the last Monday of every month.
FUNFACTSABOUT
*The meaning behind October’s name is far from accurate these days.
The ancient Roman calendar was based on the lunar cycles, as opposed
to our current calendar which is based on the solar cycles. This meant
that there were originally 10 months in their calendar, and October was
the eighth month. Its name literally translated into “the eighth month”
in Latin. In 451 BC the two months of Ianurarius and Februarius were
added to the beginning of the calendar, making October the 10th month.
*There are seven months in the year with 31 days and October is the
sixth of them. The amount of days hasn’t changed over the ages either,
with the ancient Roman calendar also placing 31 days in October.
*The Anglo-Saxons’ name for October was Winterfylleth, with its name
containing the words for winter and full moon respectively. It was
named this because winter was said to begin from the first full moon of
the month.
*The Saxons had a name for October, too. Theirs was Wyn Monath,
which translated into “wine month” because it was the time of the year
for making wine.
