Mothers. Daughters. And a handful of thrilling reads.
500 pages of pure adrenalin rush ... if you like thrillers that keep you guessing,
you’re going to love Lindwood Barclay’s Find You First. The possible heirs of a
tech billionaire, who’s recently discovered he has a terminal illness, are being
killed off one by one. With enough twists and turns to make you giddy, red
herrings to keep you on your toes and a killer twist in the tale, this is our thriller of
the month. Could not put it down! • She wanted a child, so she took one. Call Me
Mummy (another debut novel, this one by Tina Baker) kicks off as Mummy – a
glamorous, uptight woman who has everything except a child, kidnaps
five-year-old Tonya (Mummy’ll have to change that name, so common). But
Tonya’s not the perfect child Mummy was expecting … in fact, she’s a
foul-mouthed mini version of her real mum, Kim, who’s been labelled ‘scummy
mummy’ by the media, and thinks she deserves to have her other children
removed from her care too. Thrilling, harrowing, bleak … and unputdownable.
Both available from exclusivebooks.co.za
Glen Carlou Gravel Quarry Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
is a sophisticated and powerful wine ... all layers of ripe
blackcurrants, dark berries, dark chocolate and hints of
bramble and cedar. It’s full and complex ... like a few of the
books on this page. You’ll find it for R440 at glencarlou.com

We need at least one book this month
where mums and daughters love,
comfort and support. Hello Danielle
Steel. The Affair revolves around a family
of successful women (typical DS …
it’s all designers and TV stars, a fashion
magazine editor and a court judge) …
and life’s perfect and glam. Until one is
heartbroken and humiliated when news
of her husband’s affair is splashed over
the pages of the newspaper. Mum and
daughters come together to heal …
and all five realise family is what matters
most in life. • You’ve seen the series on
Netflix … Kristin Hannah’s Firefly Lane
kicks off in the early 1970s, when an
unlikely friendship is formed between
two girls, one that lasts through 30 years.
They’ve been through a lot, but one act
of betrayal may be the hurdle that tears
them apart. Read it, then share with your
best friend.
Oh, joy! A new JD Robb. Not so joyful
for successful young sculptor Arial
Bryd, who’s found murdered in her
studio. At first glance, it looks to Lt
Eve Dallas and her partner, the lovely,
wacky Peabody, to be the outcome
of an argument with a jealous
partner but it soon becomes clear
that there is much more to this case
than a lovers’ quarrel turned fatal.
White supremacy, misogyny and
religious fanaticism … Eve and her
team delve into the dark world of a
secret order … and find more than
just Arial’s murderer. We love this
series … and Faithless in Death’s
the latest bestseller.
Twelve years is a long time to wait
when you’re planning the perfect
revenge. A dozen years after her
best friend died under mysterious
circumstances, Lizzie finally feels she
can move on. At the time, Alice’s
friends and family suspected Lizzie
played a part in her death. She was,
after all, with Alice when she died. But
Lizzie has no memory of the accident
… all she knows is she would never
have hurt her. Now moving into a
new home with her fiancé, she’s going
to get on with her life. But someone
has other ideas! Lesley Kara’s The
Dare is another stay-up-all-nighter …
brilliantly thrilling.
Natalie is called to jury duty and she,
along with 11 others, need to decide
if a young man accused of a crime
is guilty. The verdict, eventually, is
not guilty. And although Natalie
was foreman, and pushed for the
decision, she’s not convinced it
was correct. And when she bumps
into the accused at a store one day,
she decides to investigate further.
CJ Cooper’s The Verdict is a dark
thriller, with a good twist, but neither
Natalie nor the accused are likeable
characters … she’s deeply unhappy,
bitter and vengeful, he’s deceitful …
you can’t help but feel they deserve
everything they get.

Salty spoils and trendy treats for mum
Picture-perfect pamper sessions … pure bliss!
The moment we stepped into the newly-renovated wellness spa, The View
by 27Pinkx at the Radisson Blu Hotel Sandton, we already felt pampered.
Honestly, everything about it screams ‘luxury’! Let’s start with the view
… the spa sure does live up to its name – from the grand windows, you
look out at the eye-catching views of city life. Inside the spa, it’s a scene of
tranquillity. The treatment rooms are named after gemstones – and what
a gem they are! Touches of detail go a long way, with beautiful handpainted
murals and a personalised greeting sign as we entered each room.
And then there are the downright incredible treatments which combine
modern technology with ancient healing wisdom. The ideal start to any
spa day is with a non-invasive treatment … we opted for Halogen Salt
Therapy. It was oh-so calming to unwind in the salt immersion room, breathing in the air pumped with atomised salt mist. The
list of benefits of this treatment is endless … it kills allergens, aids in healing skin conditions and promotes relaxation. You could
catch forty winks or opt for a hand or foot massage. We can vouch for the scrub-and-rub hand ritual which gently exfoliates
your skin with re-mineralising Atlantic sea salts, followed by a delicate massage. The aloe ferox gel mask soothes and hydrates,
while the baobab-infused lotion leaves your hands feeling unbelievably soft. Looking to treat mum this month? We know of
just the spoil … the 27Pinkx Signature Facial. It begins with a fire-and-ice peel to gently resurface your skin, followed by an
oxygen treatment which instantly hydrates your face and gives you a radiant glow. The spa’s signature touch, the sculpt and
foot massage, is also included … bliss! Visit the 27Pinkx website for the range of lovely skincare products, make-up and home
kits as well as the spa treatment menu and pricing. Details: 27pinkx.co.za; 010-226-9120.

FASHION FIRST FIRST
FASHION Trendsetter and designer. Entrepreneur and traveller. And a loving mother.
These are the many hats of Sandi Mazibuko.
Sandi Mazibuko is a fashion force. Her second store,
House of Fabrosanz, recently opened at the Mall of Africa,
boasting all the current custom Fabrosanz designs, as well
as an FRS menswear collection.
Fabrosanz is a leading African brand that showcases the
diversity of African cultures with quality, ready-to-wear
clothing that is luxurious and authentic. Sandi, the fashion
designer and entrepreneur behind the brand, shows no
sign of slowing down.
So where did all of this inspiration come from? ‘I grew
up surrounded by women who adored fashion with the
fashion conversation flowing from everyone, especially
my aunt who made all her event outfits,’
Sandi says.
‘She would create multiple versions
of traditional garments to wear at
local events and never wanted
to look like anyone else who
was attending. Little did I
know how much she would
influence my journey later
in life.’
Her inspiration doesn’t
stop there. ‘I am Zulu, so
I wanted to create prints
that showcase my culture
while still being fashionable.
‘I have been using African
print for years now and
something was missing as I
didn't know the story of the
prints I was using. I felt like that
needed to change so I started
creating prints inspired by culture, a print
that South Africans can relate to and are able
to take to the world.’
This ethos resonates with her customers – the support
for the new store has been overwhelming. ‘It’s such a
beautiful time that we live in, to see people loving and
proud to wear local brands.’
She makes it look easy but building up her brand has taken
a lot of hard work, and it even started out as a side hustle.
‘I started [this business] while I was working full time as an
executive assistant. The business started from my spare
Sandi’s
seasonal styling tips
Sport-lux/athleisure: This trend is here
to stay and it’s so easy to pull off in winter.
You can dress it up too. You don’t have to wear
tracksuits with just sneakers alone. Add a blouse
under your sweater and a blazer, then dress it up
with block heels for comfort.
Layering: Don’t put all your summer clothes away.
Instead, try to style them with your winter jackets by
layering. Winter doesn’t have to be dull.
Blazers: Staple print blazers are a must-have
for all seasons.
Bold print scarves and ponchos: Go for a
solid colour and make a statement or opt
for a bold print scarf and poncho. Add
a fedora hat and you’re good
to go!
room. I hired a seamstress to help me with orders while I was
at work. She would come in the morning and I would brief
her before going to work. Then I would use my lunchtime
and weekends to source fabrics and meet with clients.’
These foundations laid the framework for Sandi’s
entrepreneurial prowess. ‘I am very hands-on in my business.
You can put me in any department and I would be able to
do the job. I believe in doing something that I'm passionate
about so I can give it my all.’
Covid-19 naturally impacted her business. ‘The beginning
of lockdown was tough as we couldn't work much and I
had to let go of a few staff members. Thanks to our loyal
customers, business started picking up again from
Level 3. The team was able to come back to
work and the business has grown even
more as more people started to shop
online and we even had the demand
to open a Johannesburg store.’
Working this hard could mean
burnout, so Sandi is cautious in
preventing it. ‘I love my me time,
even if it’s just slowing down
and working from home. I also
meditate in the mornings, and
work out as well.’
And, of course, there’s her
love of travel. ‘Every time I feel
overwhelmed with work, I travel
just to clear my head and refocus.
I would like to visit more African
countries with Senegal and Ghana
being at the top of the list.’
She also tries to prioritise family time
but is still realistic about the demands of
entrepreneurship. ‘I’m not sure I have mastered [a worklife
balance] as my work is too demanding. Travelling helps. I
plan trips with family, my partner and sometimes with friends
to reconnect and catch up but I do spend most of my time
working. Hard work and prayer have helped me to get where
I am today, so I hope my children learn from that. They must
never feel entitled to anything they didn’t work for.’

BEAUTY FOCUS
PEELING
POWER
FOR THE PERFECT GLOW
with QMS Medicosmetics
Why exfoliate?
Because it really is one of the most important steps
in any skincare system, forming the foundation to
prepare your skin for subsequent skincare. It should
be done regularly, consistently, and safely. Regular
treatment with fruit acids is one of the best ways to
exfoliate the skin and is the key to skin regeneration.
It provides multiple benefits to the skin without
negatively impacting the deeper layers of the skin.
With age, your skin toughens, and when you exfoliate,
you remove the dry, scaly, dead skin, which allows for
stimulating cell regeneration and production. Fruit
acids also assist with the increase and stimulation of
collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid production. So,
new life is bought to the skin by increasing oxygen,
nutrients, and moisture. The result … your skin is
immediately firmer, smoother, softer, and more radiant.
Is it possible to over-exfoliate?
As it turns out, when it comes to your face and
exfoliation, you can have too much of a good thing!
Over-exfoliating is one of the biggest mistakes you
can make … it can leave your skin feeling irritated,
dry, and flaky. It can also cause a burning sensation,
breakouts, and increased sensitivity to other products
in your routine. Your skin may develop a tight,
wax-like texture, which you could mistake for a glow
but in reality, your skin’s been stripped of essential oils.
A healthy glow will always look plump and hydrated
not dry, thin, or waxy.
Why QMS?
Fortunately, peeling with QMS is safe and effective.
The brand’s fruit acid complexes are combined
with anti-irritant and hydrating ingredients … so no
downtime, no undesired side effects and no trauma to
the skin. They are safe for all skin types and conditions,
even sensitive and problematic skin, can be used
all-year round because there is no sensitivity to the
sun, and don’t make the skin thin with a waxy ‘glow’.
Instead, your skin will appear firmer, plumper, more
even with improved radiance.
PROMOTION
New Gentle Exfoliant Lotions
The new QMS Gentle Exfoliant Lotions are made up of a
specially balanced fruit acid complex that has an exfoliating
effect, dissolves cornification, and stimulates cell division in the
epidermis without irritating the skin. The effective ingredients in
this dermatologically tested lotion provide a radiant, hydrated,
and smooth complexion. So you’ll experience
an increases cell renewal rate, your skin will be
left feeling silky smooth, your skin structure
will be improved – shine, firmness and
elasticity. Plus you’ll notice it reduces fine
lines, refines your complexion and reduces
enlarged pores.
Who should use it?
Everyone! There is hardly a skin type or
condition that is not helped by fruit acid
treatment. Oily skin returns to normal,
rough skin is refined, dry skin becomes
soft and supple, dull complexions
are made to glow, wrinkles and lines
smoothed out and pigmentation
spots fade away.
There’s a trio of QMS Gentle Exfoliant
lotions to choose from … one of oily and

Women who

Tess Britz uses her creative
gifts to manufacture clothing.
NICHE HAND BLOCK PRINTED WOMEN’S CLOTHING
In her youth, Tess Britz’s dream of marrying her knight
in shining armour, living in a house with flowers on
the windowsill and cows in the meadow failed to
materialise. She realised she had to find new ways
to support herself and her children. She was a single
mother working in financial services and needed
creative ways to survive. In 2000, she journeyed to
India where she fell in love with the sounds, sights and
colours. She made a wish upon The Wish-Fulfilling Tree
for a perfect life partner – which materialised. She says, ‘I
returned home with a suitcase of gorgeous hand block
printed women’s cotton clothing which soon sold out.’
To date, she has journeyed to India 40 times to design
and manufacture her clothing range, Gypsey Rose
Cotton Clothes and Travels. She also facilitates and
hosts small group journeys for women to India, sharing
her vast experience and knowledge of the country.
‘What better way to use my creative gifts,’ says Tess. ‘And
so, I learned to hustle.’ You’ll find the studio at 106 Beyers

CLASSIC AND STYLISH WOMEN’S FASHION
Alexandra Classics is a small range of women’s
clothing designed and produced in Joburg.
When she started the brand, founder and
designer Sandra Sin was working for other
people and looking for timeless pieces. Finding
there was nothing in the market for the
discerning woman looking for well-made pieces,
she decided to start her own company. ‘I guess
after working for people I wanted to start my
own brand, creating things that I love,’ she says.
That was over 20 years ago, and while things
have changed, one thing has remained the
same … her commitment to quality and style.
‘We strive to use easy, comfortable and natural
fabrics where possible. Quality and efficiency
are of utmost importance to me.’ Sandra’s vision
allows her to take classical pieces and make
them modern. Her tailoring is immaculate,
and the fabrics are made to last which is in
line with her classic and stylish signature. Like
most entrepreneurs living through the global
pandemic, Sandra has had to deal with the
changing retail space. Determined to succeed,
she decided to pivot her business towards a

ALLOW NATURE TO TAKE CARE … NATURALLY!
Is skin sensitivity driving you crazy? Are allergies getting you down?
According to Jean Franklin, business owner of plant-based products
Herb Afrique, skin sensitivities are on the increase due to artificial
fragrances, parabens (preservatives), toxic chemicals and sunscreen
factors that are too high. Jean says the human body is more tolerant of
plant extracts than synthetically produced chemicals. She says plants
contain minerals, vitamins and trace elements that are easily absorbed
by the skin. Herbs have a balancing (homeostasis) effect, which
eventually normalise and improve the functioning of the skin … this
is where her business comes in. Herb Afrique has a whole host of 100
per cent natural creams which
contain none of these harmful
ingredients. The feather-light
moisturising and nourishing
creams are made from olive
oil and beeswax … they’re
preserved and stabilised with
Vitamin E, citrus extract and
rosemary oil. The products
contain strong antioxidants,
which make them perfect for
the most sensitive and hypoallergenic
of skins. So go on,
let nature take care of you
naturally, with Herb Afrique.

AN EASY SOLUTION TO PERMANENT HAIR REMOVAL
Meet Chane Todd … a devoted wife and mother of two beautiful
boys, an entrepreneur and the CEO of Dandelion Distribution. This
business manufactures and distributes a proudly South African
and revolutionary product called NoGrow. It’s a permanent
hair removal treatment which mimics the same cell that causes
pattern baldness – it’s topically non-invasive rather than internal.
Chane has grown her brand to seven international countries –
and counting. She also believes in growing through adversity.
‘I have recently been afforded the immense privilege and
honour of being chosen as one of the Mrs South Africa semifinalists.
Many people may question my reason for entering in
such a catastrophic time globally, but that was one of my many
motivations. Mrs South Africa has broken the stigma of being
“just a beauty pageant”. Rather, it’s a platform to
stand together and extend a helping
hand,’ says Chane. ‘We may not have
the control over Covid-19, but each
of us has the opportunity to show
compassion.’ Chane is the daughter
of the late Wayne Westner. ‘He was an
avid golfer who, in 1996, won the World
Cup alongside Ernie Els. It was such a
monumental moment, not only for our
family, but our nation. He will remain my
biggest inspiration.’

Bake with heart
Carey-Anne Robson’s love of baking was instilled as a child when she
spent time with her mum in the kitchen. Now, she’s inspiring her
own kids’ passion for baking – along with a whole host of Joburgers.
Love baking but hate the fuss?
Here’s the solution. Carey-Anne
Robson, a passionate baker, inspired
creative and loving mum, founded
uBaked – a baking box with premeasured
ingredients ordered
online and delivered directly to
your doorstep, taking the fuss
out of baking to allow for more
fun! Her original baking business,
Finchly Bespoke Bakes (named after
her children), pivoted to add the
offering of uBaked back in August
last year.
Baking isn’t just a hobby for Carey-
Anne. She’s serious about her craft,
having studied both sugarcraft
and advanced cakes through the
Prue Leith Culinary Institute. Her
kits are designed for anyone to
use, whether you know your whisk
from your spatula or not! ‘I came up
with the idea to create premium
baking kits just before lockdown
as a complimentary offering to my
existing baking business, Finchly
Bespoke Bakes, which offers
wedding and custom celebration
cakes,’ Carey-Anne says.
We took her Luscious Chocolate
Sponge Cake for a test drive and
it was so quick and easy to make.
Consider us uBaked converts –
especially after we took a huge
bite (or 10!) of the decadent
chocolate indulgence with the
richest ganache we’ve ever tasted.
Usually, so much time gets wasted
fiddling with measuring spoons and
cups, and rummaging around for
the kitchen scale – not anymore! ‘I
wanted to put together a premium
offering that would be delivered to
your door and make it easier for you
to bake not only for yourself but
with kids, and without all the mess
and fuss of measuring.’
Carey-Anne Robson makes baking fuss-free and easy for all to enjoy.
22 Get It Magazine May 21
Her love of baking was instilled
over 30 years ago as a child making
pancakes with her mum (who she
credits as her baking inspiration). Her
first order was for a cousin’s birthday
party when Carey-Anne was only 12
years old!
Baking and business don’t always
go hand in hand but Carey-Anne
finds it easy. ‘I come from a family
of entrepreneurs, so it was a natural
inclination. I was lucky to find
something that I was not only talented
at, as I’m more skilled at practical
application, but that would also be
viable as a start-up.’
But it hasn’t all been smooth-sailing.
‘We have a fantastic e-commerce
site, but the market is still a little
conservative with online ordering. We
are hoping to build a base of happy
uBakers with some exciting activations
and offerings.’
The uBaked kits range from cinnamon
rolls and chocolate tarts to cookies,
cupcakes and lemon meringue pie, all
product-tested by the most discerning
panel in the form of Carey-Anne’s two
children, aged seven and three. ‘I’m
pretty sure my son is going to work in
the kitchen one day as he is constantly
wanting to get involved and loves
watching my mixer in action. My
daughter also loves to bake.’
Running multiple businesses is a
tough task but Carey-Anne has
become a pro at time management.
‘Sometimes it gets crazy on the
weekends especially when I’m
finishing wedding or celebration
cakes, but I’m lucky to have fantastic
support from my family and to be
able to work from home, which makes
things much easier.’
For those with less of a sweet tooth,
there’s still something for you in
Carey-Anne’s kitchen. ‘I have an
amazing recipe for kitke bread that
makes two enormous loaves. It’s a
super easy, soft, plaited honey bread
and not only smells amazing while it
bakes but is also so delicious. There’s
nothing like freshly baked bread!’
Details: Head to uBaked.co.za to browse
the selection of baking kits and get them
delivered to your door between Monday
and Thursday. All you need to add is
eggs, butter, water and a whole lot of
love and fun! Keep an eye out for special
boxes that launch every now and then –
you don’t want to miss out!
Carey-Anne’s top tips for fuss-free baking
1. Preparation is key – prepare your ingredients and baking tins before you
start. And don’t forget to pre-heat your oven!
2. Use tried and trusted recipes. If you’re baking something for a special
occasion and are using a new recipe, make sure to trial it at least once before
the big day.
3. When using butter, always use it at room temperature for cakes and sponges,
and fridge-cold for pastries.
4. Order a baking kit when baking with kids. Pre-measured ingredients ensure a
lot more fun and a lot less mess!
5. Don’t forget to add the love. Stress comes out in baked goods and has
caused many ruined cakes. Before you begin, relax, breathe and remember to
have fun. That’s what baking is all about.
Carey-Anne Robson says her daughter loves to bake.
#BakersofInstagram
uBaked is about creating
Insta-worthy baked goods
that taste as delicious as they
look – but sometimes we
don’t know where to start
when snapping some pics!
Carey-Anne has three bits of
advice for us…
• Rustic is best. Your bakes
don’t need to be absolutely
perfect.
• Add some texture with
baking paper or utensils
and ingredients.
• Keep your filters consistent.

Falafel salad bowl & a glass of Shiraz
Here’s a vegetarian feast, packed with flavour and
texture, that’s the perfect dish for late Autumn
lunch. Make the falafel mix ahead, roll into balls
and refrigerate until you’re ready to drop them
into hot oil. The herby yoghurt dressing provides a
cool, creamy coat that ties everything together in a
bright yet comforting way. Enjoy this with the sleek
Spier Seaward Shiraz.
Note: The chickpeas and beans need overnight
soaking, so prep a day ahead. If you prefer not to
use a mixture of chickpeas and beans, use two cups
of chickpeas. This recipe serves four to six people.
For the falafels, you’ll need: 1 cup dried chickpeas; 1
cup dried beans (split broad beans, butter beans
or heerenbone); water, for soaking; half an onion,
roughly chopped; 30ml (2 Tbsp) lemon juice; 20g
each parsley and coriander leaves; 3 garlic cloves;
5ml (1 tsp) each of ground coriander, ground cumin
and salt; 1ml (¼ tsp) each of ground nutmeg and
ground cinnamon; 2.5 ml (½ tsp) baking soda;
vegetable oil, for frying
Method: Place the chickpeas and beans in a bowl
and cover with water. Leave to soak overnight (8 to
12 hours). Drain, then add to a food processor with
the onion, lemon juice, parsley, coriander leaves,
garlic, coriander, cumin, nutmeg, cinnamon, salt
and baking soda. Process until you have a relatively
smooth paste, scraping the sides. There should still
be some texture — you don’t want a complete
mush. Refrigerate for 15 to 30 minutes, then roll
into balls with a diameter of about 4cm. Heat the oil
over moderate heat. Fry the falafels in batches until
golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and
drain on kitchen paper. Serve immediately with the
salad bowls and yoghurt dressing (see below).
For the herbed yoghurt dressing, you’ll need: 3/4 cup
Greek yoghurt; 15 to 30ml lemon juice; handful
each of fresh parsley and fresh chives; 5ml Dijon
mustard; salt and pepper
Method: In a blender, add the yoghurt, lemon juice,
herbs and mustard. Season with salt and pepper,
then blend until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to
use then serve with the falafel bowl.
For the salad bowls, you’ll need: a bunch fresh
salad leaves; shredded carrot and/or beans; some
roasted vegetables of your choice (like cauliflower
or aubergine), optional; pickled onions; freshly
fried falafels; yoghurt dressing; sesame seeds
for sprinkling
Method: Arrange the leaves, vegetables, pickled
onions and falafels in bowls. Top generously with
yoghurt dressing and a sprinkle of sesame seeds.
Serve with a glass of Spier Seaward Shiraz – a
tall, dark and handsome Shiraz which also cuts a
delicious dash when served with grilled meats or a
charcuterie platter. Details: spier.co.za
Boxed wine. Now with snob-appeal!
Remember when we scoffed at boxed wine. Hmmmm … not any
more. Premium wine in a bag-in-box is now a (good) thing …
with two more premium ranges launching theirs this month. It’s all
about the need for value without compromising on taste or quality
… and the award-winning Fleur du Cap and Zonnebloem
two-litre slim boxes certainly offer that, and more. Look out for
the Fleur du Cap Rosé and Sauvignon Blanc, and the Zonnebloem
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the new format. With stylish
boxes and reasonable pricing (R150 to R190), these store easily in
the fridge, allowing you to have just a glass or two without wasting
the rest of a bottle, and they also keep the wine fresher for longer
(up to four weeks in the fridge) and can travel where glass can’t.
So they tick all the wine boxes (see what we did there?) perfectly.

A month of
DELICIOUSNESS
You know the brighter the vegetable,
the better it is, right? Pack some power
into your meals with deep purple
and orange and green choices. With
rainbow salads and tasty tapas, it’s
going to be a delicious May.
Tapas. Small, tasty dishes packed with big flavours and
designed to share with friends, passing plates around
the table for a little taste of everything. Local author
Chantal Lascaris was inspired by her trips to Spain, and
the bustling Spanish tapas bars and pintxos bars of San
Sebastian. In All Sorts of Tapas, you’ll find delicious
dishes that bring to life the richness of Spain’s flavours,
with a few from South Africa, too. There’s everything
from breakfast tapas (salami, egg and chips pintxos) to
gazpacho shooters (served with tiny cheese toasties
on the side). From delicious stuffed artichokes with
caramelised onions to bite-sized cheesy herb muffins
with peppadew cream. From arancini with truffle dip
(could well be our best recipe in the book!) to raspberry
chutney ostrich slices. Obviously, sweet little tapas too
… it’s worth buying the book for the churro chips with
chocolate sauce recipe alone. R240
Rainbow nation slaw
This is one of the recipes from The Flexitarian Foodie – Real
Food – Conscious Living by Jax Moorcroft, a collection of
proudly South African, budget-approved and family-friendly
recipes which proves that eating and living an eco-friendly
lifestyle doesn’t have to be complicated and expensive, but
it does improve our health and that of the planet. Oh … and
there are plenty of dishes for meat eaters too … this book really
does have something for everyone. R290.
If you have a food processor lurking in the back of a cupboard
somewhere, now is the time to dust it off and use it. This
salad is super easy and quick if you can just whizz everything
through the chute and save yourself some elbow grease.
Otherwise a grater will work just fine, doesn’t use electricity and
gives your arms a great workout! Serves four.
You’ll need: 1 red cabbage, outer leaves removed, and grated; 3
carrots, peeled and grated; 1 broccoli head, grated; 1 red and 1
yellow pepper, grated; 1 pineapple, peeled and grated; 2 cups
baby spinach, finely chopped; 1/2 cup dried cranberries; 2/3
cup no-nasties mayo; 1/ 2 cup fresh blueberries
Method: Combine all the ingredients in a large glass bowl,
adding the mayo and blueberries just before serving otherwise
the pineapple juice might affect the texture of the mayo.

Garden tasks for May
• There is still time to plant Spring bulbs
If you have ordered tulips, plant them
as soon as possible after they arrive.
• Water Winter annuals at least once a
week and give them a weekly feed with
a liquid fertiliser to keep them flowering.
• Train climbing sweet peas up their
supports and check for aphids. Use an
organic insecticide or soapy water (but
not too strong a mixture).
• Trays of pansies, violas and primulas
can all still be planted out.
• Pelargoniums, succulents, cacti, ferns,
agapanthus, and day lilies can receive
less water but don’t let camellias and
azaleas dry out or their Spring flowers
will be affected.
• This is a good time to plant flowering
shrubs like abelia, buddleia, Cape
honeysuckle (Tecoma capensis),
Calliandra, escallonia, may (Spiraea),
Mackaya bella, and viburnum.
• If you are in a frost belt, stock up on frost
cloth and watch the weather report.
• Pot up some of your favourite
perennial herbs and pop them in a
sunny sheltered area.
• Go on a snail blitz and get rid of
snails that are overwintering in
old pots or among the clumps of
perennials. Put out snail bait or traps
to protect young seedlings.
We’re planting … Calibrachoa Cha-Cha
Diva Hot Pink, which is exactly
the kind of showstopper
that the name implies.
A great performer in
containers, hanging
baskets and in
sunny raised
garden beds,
which, for all its
star quality,
is a plant
that is really
easy to grow
and care for.
Plant it in
well-drained
soil or good quality
potting soil, water
regularly (especially containers) and fertilise
once or twice a month to keep up the quality of
flowers. Containers and baskets do best with
morning sun. Details: ballstraathof.co.za
Veggie of the month - broad beans
One of the easiest Winter crops to grow is broad beans, and
it likes the cold, which encourages it to set pods.
Broad beans are sturdy upright growing plants, about 1m
high, which are rarely bothered by pests or diseases. From
seed sown in May you should be able to start harvesting
from the end of July or early August through to late
September or October.
They may be easy, but they’re heavy feeders, needing wellcomposted
soil with additional fertiliser (2:3:2 or 3:1:5). And
while they grow in all kinds of soil, they do need full sun and
shelter from the wind.
Sow seeds directly into the soil where the plants are to
mature, keep them moist during germination and then
water regularly once the seedlings have germinated. As they
grow, the plants will need to be staked.
Beans should be ready for harvesting within 12 to 16 weeks.
The pods are ready for picking when they have filled out
and before they burst open.
Fresh beans have a delicious earthy flavour that fits in well
with Winter cooking, in stews, casseroles and soup. And
being a legume, the broad bean is an excellent source of
high-quality plant protein.

Wedding bells ring
Whether you picture your big day to be glitzy glam or country chic, indoors or
outdoors, big or intimate … these specialists will bring your dream to life
Text: TAYLA BLAIRE. Photos: MEGAN BRETT.
Wow, wedding planning can be a breeze
Talk about a dream team! Susan Greig has teamed up with
her lifelong friend, Catherine Joyner, to form Weddings with
Wow – WWW – for curated weddings at the magnificent
Beechwood Gardens, four acres of botanical beauty in the
heart of Hyde Park.
Covid-19 has necessitated that couples have a smaller
budget and guest list, but that shouldn’t come at the cost
of losing the ‘vision’ of your dream wedding. Catherine and
Susan welcome weddings of all budgets, bringing their style,
skill and creativity to the table.
Susan describes it as being able to create a ‘champagne
look on a beer budget’, thanks, in part, to the beautiful decor
props the pair has accumulated over the years. ‘The theme,
colour palette, food, decor, lighting and ceremony are all
brainstormed with the couple,’ Susan says.
‘Then we use our years of experience to transform the vision
into reality with a seamless ceremony and wedding party.’
And it’s easy to do in the Beechwood Gardens – the decor
practically takes care of itself.
‘A tranquil, magical garden setting with rustling leaves,
swaying blooms, birdsong, buzzing bees and fluttering
butterflies creates a perfect backdrop. There’s no need to
travel elsewhere for flawless wedding photos.’
Intimate weddings are also proving to be popular even when
the option of a larger guest list is there. ‘Every bridal party has
commented that the intimacy of a small wedding made their
day special, rather than a large gathering where the bride
and groom seldom get to chat with all of their guests.
‘Love, intimacy and loyalty to close friends and family take
precedence over flashy, “show-off” parties.’
From a Covid-19 safety perspective, there’s an advantage
in garden weddings. ‘Fresh air lessens infection risks
and temperate Johannesburg weather makes outdoor
weddings popular.’
Beechwood does come with some restrictions though.
‘No loud music is allowed as it’s a residential suburb so it’s
a quiet, birdsong wedding. Our clients love the option of a
tranquil wedding day and connecting with their guests.’
That said, the duo is more than happy to do venues other
than Beechwood. Susan’s catering service can be set up
anywhere and the team is also willing to travel, having just
wrapped up two beautiful parties in Cape Town with Clifton
Beach as the backdrop.
