Tess Britz uses her creative
gifts to manufacture clothing.
NICHE HAND BLOCK PRINTED WOMEN’S CLOTHING
In her youth, Tess Britz’s dream of marrying her knight
in shining armour, living in a house with flowers on
the windowsill and cows in the meadow failed to
materialise. She realised she had to find new ways
to support herself and her children. She was a single
mother working in financial services and needed
creative ways to survive. In 2000, she journeyed to
India where she fell in love with the sounds, sights and
colours. She made a wish upon The Wish-Fulfilling Tree
for a perfect life partner – which materialised. She says, ‘I
returned home with a suitcase of gorgeous hand block
printed women’s cotton clothing which soon sold out.’
To date, she has journeyed to India 40 times to design
and manufacture her clothing range, Gypsey Rose
Cotton Clothes and Travels. She also facilitates and
hosts small group journeys for women to India, sharing
her vast experience and knowledge of the country.
‘What better way to use my creative gifts,’ says Tess. ‘And
so, I learned to hustle.’ You’ll find the studio at 106 Beyers
