For centuries, from Homer’s Odyssey to the Durrell family’s stay on the island in the 1930s, the beauty of Corfu has
bewitched writers, artists, travellers and royalty.Known as ‘The Garden Isle’, it is one of the greenest Greek islands with
a higher annual rainfall than London. With its lush vegetation, wildflowers and olive groves punctuated by cypress
trees, this is a gardener’s heaven. The influence of Greek, Venetian, French and British occupation can be seen not only
in the beautiful architecture of Corfu Town, but also in the island’s thriving agriculture and gardens.
This tour focuses on the work of a new wave of garden designers, who honour the Mediterranean style with native
plants, while introducing other plants adapted to tolerate hot, dry summers. You will see British designer Jennifer
Gay’s work at Rou and Kassiopia, and have a chance to visit the Rothschild Estate where a host of designers, including
Lady Mary Keen have worked their magic. You will stay in the five-star Hotel Domes Miramare, a former Onassis villa
with a private beach where jet setters and politicians were once entertained in lavish style. The tradition of hospitality
continues, with reserved rooms all facing the Ionian Sea.
