Programme
Day 1
Depart from London Heathrow for our flight to Tangier via Madrid on
IB879 14.35. Transfer to the El Minzah Hotel and enjoy the rest of the
afternoon and evening here. We dine together at the hotel’s Moroccan
restaurant.
Day 2
Today we visit a cluster of gardens on Vieille Montagne, all enjoying
sublime views over the Bay of Tangier, just a short drive from our hotel.
These include Gazebo, the Tangier residence of celebrated interior
designer Veere Grenney; El Foolk, home of the late antiques dealer
Christopher Gibbs, and Cliff House, Tangier home and inspirational
garden of Madison Cox, garden designer and president of the
Fondation Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint-Laurent. Madison will also be one
of several distinguished Tangerine guests for a buffet lunch hosted
by Anna Mackew, a former water-skiing champion (and renowned
English beauty) who has lived in Tangier for many decades – her house
and garden reflect a lifetime’s passion for the company of people and
plants . . . and dogs, and cats, and ducks and geese. In the evening we
head back to Vieille Montagne, to dine together in a local restaurant of
repute.
Day 3
Umberto Pasti hails from Milan, but for the past thirty years has spent
much of his time both in Tangier and Rohuna, a small village close
to the Atlantic coast, an hour south of the city. Ecologist, writer and
gardener extraordinaire, Umberto’s passion for plants, especially those
native to Morocco and in danger of extinction, is legendary and we
have the great privilege of visiting both his gardens in his company as
well as enjoying lunch with him at Rohuna. We return to the Minzah
for dinner in the hotel’s French restaurant.
Day 4
The Donabo Botanic garden is an exciting and beautifully planted new
project, from British artist Paul Belvoir, set on the glorious, wooded
slopes of the Cape Spartel Nature Reserve, a short drive out of the city.
After a guided visit, we enjoy a light lunch in the gardens followed
by an afternoon at leisure – the souks of the Medina are just a short
stroll from our hotel – before heading to the Marchane for a lanternlit
dinner with Gordon Watson (of TV antique-dealing celebrity) at his
exquisite house and courtyard garden, Dar Ouezzane.
Day 5
One of Tangier’s most distinguished British residents offers an optional
guided walk from the hotel, taking in some of the city’s most important
historical sites. Depart Tangier for the afternoon flight to London
Heathrow via Madrid.
Hosted by Virginia Affleck, and led by
garden expert Kirsty Fergusson
