Celebrating Ten Years of Success in the Eastern Mediterranean Region
Ten years ago, a public health network by the name of EMPHNET was launched as A Driving Force for Change in the heart of one of the most troubled regions in the world to become today, as GHD|EMPHNET, a leading organization in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) that is Working Together for Better Health. This year marks ten years of GHD|EMPHNET making a difference in the public health scene in EMR countries, building workforce capacities, strengthening programs, supporting research for informed decision-making, and enhancing networking through strategic collaborations with ministries of health and organizations with similar missions to ours.

Integrity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> EPI data at prov<strong>in</strong>cial and national level<br />
was improved from a basel<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> 40% <strong>in</strong> 2017<br />
to 85% <strong>in</strong> 2020.<br />
Timel<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>of</strong> EPI report<strong>in</strong>g at all levels was improved<br />
from a 62% basel<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> 2017 to 100% <strong>in</strong><br />
2020.<br />
INCREASING DEMAND FOR IMMUNIZATION SERVICES IN AFGHANISTAN<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce 2016, GHD|EMPHNET has been work<strong>in</strong>g with Afghanistan M<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> Public Health<br />
to <strong>in</strong>crease demand for immunization <strong>in</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g appropriate communication <strong>in</strong>tervention for<br />
improv<strong>in</strong>g knowledge and attitudes regard<strong>in</strong>g immunization services. Five Polio endemic and<br />
high-risk prov<strong>in</strong>ces were targeted: Helmand, Kandahar, Kunar, Laghman, and Nangarhar. In a<br />
study conducted to determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terventions, results <strong>in</strong>dicated a significant<br />
improvement among <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tervention group <strong>in</strong> all components <strong>of</strong> knowledge, attitudes and<br />
practice regard<strong>in</strong>g child immunization compared to <strong>the</strong> control group.<br />
In a KAP study <strong>in</strong> Afghanistan, <strong>the</strong> knowledge <strong>of</strong> respondents about vacc<strong>in</strong>e protection was<br />
STRENGTHENING THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE NATIONAL MMUNIZATION<br />
TECHNICAL ADVISORY GROUPS<br />
GHD|EMPHNET provided technical support to Afghanistan, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Morocco,<br />
Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Tunisia to operationalize <strong>the</strong>ir National Immunization Technical<br />
Advisory Groups (NITAGs) accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> global standards. GHD|EMPHNET supported<br />
<strong>the</strong>se countries <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g NITAG improvement plans and cont<strong>in</strong>ues to provide needed<br />
support for <strong>the</strong> implementation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se plans.<br />
