The first heavy snow of' winter
draws different responses from each
of us. For me that first downfall
evokes memories of an experience
if*fcich confirmed my belief that there
w |sfbiisic good in human nature.
In 1967, when blizzards covered the
midwest with six feet and more of
snow, 1 was serving time with the U.S.
Army Air Defense Command at
Arlington Heights. 111., northwest of
Chicago
My wife was living with me in a
housetrai\or on a pig farm near Wheeling,
about ten miles from the 45th Brigade
headquarters site which was my
place of employment for two years.
OUR TWO-YEAR residence there
offered friends and relatives a good
reason for travelling to Arlington
Heights for a week or long weekend
for a personal visit with us and to tour
the windy city
And we encouraged as many visitors
as wanted to come because it was
great entertainment to take people
down to Chicago. I have been told
there are great cities in America,
some of which are allegedly better
than Chicago, But no-one has convinced
me yet th;it there is a better
city in America than Chicago
But we cannot now digress too far in
expounding on the glories of Chicago
because today's column is not about
the windy city but the basic goodness
in human nature. And in the winter of
l%7 in the windy city, human nature
"was much more preferable than
mother nature
'Particularly on the weekend my
wife's sister was scheduled to arrive
for a long weekend's visit. Weather
conditions were normal when she left
Plymouth in the early morning hours
to catch a train in Ann Arbor In fact,
everything was normal m Ann Arbor
also
Hut after the train began its westward
journey, the storm began—a
mammoth blizzard which hit Michigan
iind Illinois with a fury. The train
Linda was on. unbeknownst to us, got
stranded somewhere near Benton Harbor
A large truck had gotten stuck at
a crossing and the tram was delayed a
couple hours until a tow truck could
arrive and clear off the track.
The train was loaded with passengers
and it soon became apparent
there wasn't enough food on board
