Symbol of past gets new beginning By W W. EDGAR It is amazing, sometimes, what a little imagination can do For the past several decades the old CM) freight house in Plymouth has stood like a ghost across the tracks from the deserted railroad station, but now is an unusual gift shop—another diamond in the crown of Old Village. The gift shop, the brainchild of Saul and Adrienne Star, opened this week to help the community usher in the yuletide rhe new shop has a line-up of gifts which run in price from $1 to $60 and everything from a holiday greeting card to china, glass, wicker, candles and everything else found in modern gift shops Before taking over the old freight house the Stars operated The Fig Tree in Canton Township. But when they set eyes on the freight house and the possibilities it offered, they put their imagination to work and the community now has a special addition to its list of specialty shops. THE TRANSITION to a gift shop is another chapter in the odd history of the freight house. A few years ago it was considered an eye-sore that blocked the vision of oncoming trains. At the time, Cal Holes had plans to offer the communis a "railroad restaurant" on the site With the possibility of tte restaurant, the C&O moved the freight house across the tracks and on the east side of Starkweather Since then'the dream of the railroad restaurant became a nightmare. Boles the dreamer, reportedly went bankrupt and the restaurant building and the embellished passenger cars were left to the vagueries of the weather Only recently the cars were moved again All the while, the 1 old freight house stood as symbol of by-gone days, almost unwanted and left to sink into ruins For a time it was being considered for law offices, but like all the other ideas the notion died in infancy. That fs. until the Stars came along and transformed it into a gift shop. The transition has brought back many memories of the days.when the freight house was one of the busiest places m ' he area. ONE OF THOSE who recalled the old days was Clarence Moore, former president of the Plymouth Historical Sonet \ "This is the same old floor," he said the other afternoon while paying a visit And the big scales were just about here " t l-ookmg toward the ceiling he mentioned that the sprinkling system was new but the rest of the place was just like the old days Moore recalled "the days when he was with the Plymouth Stamping plant when .ill of the ordeVs were shipped by freight "There were very few trucks back in 1932 so everything was shipped by freight But I just can't believe the many changes that have Ix'en made."
