Shortly after he wrote the musical<br />
sett<strong>in</strong>g to "A Midsummer Night's<br />
Dream." wealthy Berl<strong>in</strong> composer<br />
Felix Men de l ssoh n-Bart hoi dy staged a<br />
complete performance of the Shakespearean<br />
play, with dancers and<br />
chorus, on the lawn of his own estate,<br />
impressive for its natural sett<strong>in</strong>g That<br />
was <strong>in</strong> the 1840s<br />
The late Jesse Bonstelle would stage<br />
annual performances on Detroit's<br />
Belle Isle—the full play and Mendelssohn's<br />
musical sett<strong>in</strong>g. That was a<br />
half-century ago.<br />
A suite from Mendelssohn's score is<br />
cdmmon concert fare and a popular<br />
sell<strong>in</strong>g Record. Rarely <strong>in</strong> a lifetime,<br />
howeven. does one have a chance to<br />
see "A Midsummer Night's Dream"<br />
the 1 way Mendelssohn himself staged<br />
it.<br />

"WE ARE do<strong>in</strong>g two scenes," said<br />
Mrs Turner, who as a child participated<br />
<strong>in</strong> the Belle Isle perform<br />
ancess—"the ones center<strong>in</strong>g on the<br />
rude mechanics—Qu<strong>in</strong>ce. Bottom.<br />
Flute and the rest—rehears<strong>in</strong>g their<br />
play.<br />
"We're us<strong>in</strong>g pantomime <strong>in</strong> full costume<br />
patterned from the Old Vic production.<br />
There'll be a certa<strong>in</strong> amount<br />
of pageantry."<br />
Mrs Turner expla<strong>in</strong>ed the production''theory.<br />
"In opera, you know,<br />
there are recitative and aria The<br />
recitative tells the action. The aria<br />
expresses the mood- —the th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g, the<br />
suffer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
"L<strong>in</strong> Henderson, with her dancers<br />
lias taken the aria role. She has<br />
choreographed it especially foe. this<br />
production."<br />
Thus, the five ballet dancers—four<br />
women and a man rang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> age from<br />
18 to 30—will not play characters but<br />
