President’s Message
Michael Gordon
Happy Hanukkah. We’re coming to the end of another interesting (?)
year, and many activities have resumed at the Temple. At the same time,
Zoom is still with us, so most of these activities are what we call
“hybrid.” The good news is that many of us are engaging in these
activities with significant participation over Zoom from congregants
who otherwise would not be participating.
Our past relationships are being renewed and strengthened. As the
weather grows colder and we’re spending more time indoors, we
continue to be vigilant with masking, hand washing, and respecting the
health of our fellow congregants.
With the secular new year approaching, we are working hard to close
the gap between income and expense. We ask everyone to think about
what the Temple means to you and what you can afford to contribute.
This is a great time to be in the Hanukkah spirit and share some gelt.
If you would like to make an End of Year contribution, please visit our
online store at https://tashjc.corecommerce.com/hanukkah-end-of-year-appeal/
As we discussed at the congregational meeting, we will be reaching out
to many of you and asking you to participate in small focus groups. By
engaging in this activity, you will be defining the future vision and
mission for Temple Adas Shalom. If you could, please make it a priority
to participate in this opportunity to pave your future here at Temple
Adas Shalom.
Chag Sameach,
Mike Gordon, Board President of Temple Adas Shalom
Religious Practices Message
Melissa Immel & Mark Wolkow
As this article is penned, the potatoes and oil await to be united in the
kitchen to form the tastiest of treats - potato latkes. The only real
question is: Applesauce or sour cream? In any event, we're looking
forward to a wonderful Tot and Family Shabbat on December 3rd, to
include several Hanukkah melodies and the continued streaming each
night of the candle-lighting on Temple grounds. Thanks to the
Sisterhood's support, we have a brand new "life-sized" menorah. The
candle-lighting (and related activities) will continue through Sunday
evening, December 5th.
Daven & Dine (Dining this time at Lee's Hunan in Beard's Hill Shopping
Center) will allow you to do Chinese on Christmas Eve this year, so
leftovers should be available on the 25th. Of course, you could always
have Chinese on Christmas Day as well.
We round out the year, literally, on the 31st with a lay-led service
followed by a fun activity planned by the Social Committee. And before
the year is out, don't forget to make your secular New Year resolutions.
We have a suggestion for you on that score; check out the Religious
Practices team and learn about all that happens behind the scenes to
make everything run smoothly on Shabbat, holidays, and other events in
the Sanctuary.
Shalom,
Melissa Immel & Mark Wolkow, Co-Chairs, Religious Practices Committee
V.P. of Membership Message
Stephen Marksamer
Last month I referenced President Mike Gordon and our renewed emphasis on our
Jewish identity, our expectations of being part of the Temple Adas Shalom community,
and securing our voices for the future. We took this message up a notch at our semiannual
Congregational meeting with the theme: Belonging.
The question What is Temple Adas Shalom was answered: The people, the families, the
Rabbi, and the building. But it is also, most importantly, a place for people to belong to
a community. As one member recently said to me, “TAS is like a big family, complete
with lots of great times and occasional squabbles, and the Temple has become like
a home away from home.”
This big family is our community, and it is the community that is at the center of who
we are, the people who are here, and the connections that we have. What we are
building here at Temple Adas Shalom, or what perhaps can be called our vision, is a
place that is both sanctuary and friendly; a place for relationship building and honest
discussion on both religious and secular levels. A place of Belonging.
But not only belonging, but our context must also be greater than that. We are a
diversified community—people from all borders, all colors, all genders & gender
identity & sexual orientation. Our Interfaith relationships are strong here. We belong
together; we are aware together, and we strive to engage together. There are many
social, educational, and religious occasions for engagement. The more we do together,
the more we grow together. Let’s make a commitment or pledge for this greater context.
Our Temple Adas Shalom Pledge:
We pledge to Engage with each other in our congregation.
We pledge our belief that Judaism is worth sustaining.
These Commitments are the conduit that joins all of us to our Jewish community.
As membership lead, I am very encouraged by our core membership, their dedication to
each other, and our Adas Shalom community.
This is the picture we
present:
We are together, a Congregation and friends within our Harford & Cecil Counties. A
commitment to each other and our synagogue is what sustains our Jewish Community
and makes possible all that is valued here. We show many of our opportunities here at
Temple Adas Shalom, and this is the Value Proposition that we offer.
Sincerely,
Stephen Marksamer, VP Membership, Temple Adas Shalom
Fundraising Announcement
Terry Weiner
SHOPWITHSCRIP.COM CHEAT SHEET
1. To join the program, you need to visit ShopwithScrip.com. Sign up for an account
using our organization code: C8WI7XN6IQBW.
2. Follow all the prompts such as setting up your username, password, etc.
3. A screen will pop up asking you to enter the verification code sent to the email
that you registered with on the previous page.
4. You will get a box on the website that asks you to link your bank account. This is
where a number of people are having problems.
5. Enter all the information required under manually enter information. THIS IS
THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP TO PARTICIPATE. Without this
information, you will not be able to successfully place your orders.
6. You will get a notification that lets you know that one or two small deposits have
been made to that account. You will need to go into your banking website and
account transactions to see these amounts – these amounts need to be verified in
the ShopwithScrip.com website.
7. Once all these steps have been completed, you should be good to go.
8. Now you can sign up through the RaiseRight App with the organization code
above. YOU CANNOT ENROLL ON RAISERIGHT – ONLY ON THE
SHOPWITHSCRIP.COM WEBSITE.
Important things to remember:
Only pay for your gift cards with your bank account. Do not use the credit card option
as you will pay 2.65% on your total order. Please do not pay with a check – when
notifications are sent to me with orders that were paid by check, you will be contacted
that we cannot process these orders. At that time, the orders will be canceled. BANK
ACCOUNT ONLY!!!
When you purchase your gift cards, each order (can be a variety of vendors – ecards as well as
hard gift cards) will incur a processing charge of fifteen cents ($.15) per order, not per card.
If you purchase hard cards (traditional cards that you purchase in stores), make sure you have
them sent to the fundraising coordinator. Temple Adas Shalom is picking up this
charge of $8.75 per order shipped so you will not have to pay the shipping charge. If
you have the option to SHIP AT HOME, you will be paying $8.75 plus $.50 per card up
to a maximum of 16 cards which costs as much as $16.75 per order.
10 | P a g e

Fundraising Announcement Con’t
Terry Weiner
During the course of the year, orders will be placed at least once a month if there is very
little activity and up to once a week, especially during the holidays. Once the cards are
received and validated by the coordinator (traditional gift cards only), you will receive an
email/phone call notifying you that you can pick them up.
Since the synagogue is not open on a daily basis, the cards are being shipped to Terry
Weiner as all shipments must be signed for. Her contact information is as follows:
E-mail: fundraising@templeadasshalom.org
Phone: (410) 939-3170
Mailing Address: contact the office for this address (for respect of private information)
We are in the process of setting up a separate account for this program as it is
generating quite a bit of activity and we want it to be as seamless as possible.
ShopwithScrip.com generates payments to Temple Adas Shalom on the first Monday of
each month to the temple. All funds come to Temple Adas Shalom; therefore,
bookkeeping needs to calculate your rebate and remit to you. Checks will be generated
to those who ordered in the prior month approximately two weeks after the funds are
received.
All rebates are split between the participant and Temple Adas Shalom 50/50. Some
folks have asked if they can donate their rebate to Temple Adas Shalom and the answer
is a resounding YES!!! For the time being, to help with the tracking of those funds, we
are asking you to send a check for that amount to the temple or to donate through the
Temple Adas Shalom storefront. This will better enable us to track these funds and for
the office administrator to accurately record this in your account. Our hope is to
streamline this process down the road to make it easier for all concerned to help
Temple Adas Shalom grow and prosper.
This program is extraordinary as it helps you, the participant, to purchase gift cards
that you would usually buy elsewhere and earn a little money back for yourself as well
as Temple Adas Shalom. If you haven’t signed up, do yourself a favor and get on board.
This program is going to be a major part of the fundraising effort for our synagogue and
with your participation, we can continue to grow.
Sincerely,
Terry Weiner, Fundraising Chair
