CHRISTMAS DAYHow light the touch on chilly facesnowflakes settle, all around,beats the heart at anxious pace,As children see the icy ground.“Is Father Christmas on his way?”Again they ask, again, again.“If you’ve been good,” I hear you say,As parents all, explain, explain.And so to bed, but not to sleep,Not yet, with little minds alert.They hear each rustle, and they keepTheir eyes tight shut until they hurt.On Christmas morning, (far too late),The squeals begin, “Wake up, he’s been!”And parents all in slumber state,Can see it’s only five-fifteen.And who are we to stop their fun,For we were once that little child.We hoped for presents, even one,At end of bed or tree-base piled.And we remember many thingsAt Christmas time, that went before,And oh we wish that time could bringThose missing, through the open door.But they are with us, safe, secure,And never will they slip away,And they would wish, of this I’m sure,A very special Christmas Day.GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATION 2018 - The LiphookCommunity Magazine has taken note of the regulations and can confirm thatthe information we hold has been fully assessed. Margaret Wilson AwardLast year the Magazinewas delighted to receivea legacy from MargaretWilson. Margaret hadbeen a founder and exPresident of the magazine.During her lifetime,Margaret had been achemistry teacher andhad a number of interestsincluding book illustrationsand the arts.The Committee felt that it would be appropriate to incorporateMargaret’s interests when spending her legacy. So it was agreedto run a competition that all Liphook Schools be invited to takepart in, called the Margaret Wilson Award. Teachers would beinvited to nominate pupils that had shown exceptional progressand enthusiasm during the school year, with the subject changingeach year. Teachers would alsobe asked to submit a couple ofparagraphs explaining whythey felt the pupil shouldreceive the award.The Award started in theschool year 2020 – 2021 withScience and Nature Studies.Prize winners so far haveincluded:Liphook Infant SchoolElliot and SachinLiphook Junior SchoolScarlett and GeorgeChurcher’s CollegeHowie and EmileaHowie and Emilea have made andtested Space Capsules, designingtheir own experiments and recordingtheir results with great enthusiasm.Sachin made excellent progress in hisscience during Year 2 due to his hardworking and conscientious nature.George has designed displays andgiven presentations on a variety ofbird species and the Big GardenBirdwatch. Scarlett became an EcoWarrior composting lunch food wasteand produced superb art work on usingrecycled objects and litter. Elliot helpedhis class with his clear explanations ofwhy certain materials would be usedto make houses and produced a videoof himself presenting information hehad discovered about gravity.The winners have each received acertificate and a £25 book token.Jackie Kelsey & Fay BoyettDISTRIBUTION THROUGH THE YEARS OFThe Liphook MagazineThe parish of Bramshott and Liphook has increased in sizesubstantially over the fifty years the Magazine has been inexistence. Courtesy of new housing developments over the pastfew years the number of magazines delivered has changed from3,400 in 1991, 3,600 in 1996 and 3,900 in 2014. Currently 4,250copies of our magazine are delivered to households in Liphookand Bramshott by 82 volunteers.Sue Knight has been the co-ordinator for magazine distributionsince 2006. The distribution task is a huge commitment by Sueand her volunteers. It was made more difficult during 2020 whenthe coronavirus pandemic necessitated the “quarantining” of theprinted copies prior to distribution to ensure safety for all.Some volunteers deliver up to 100 copies each quarter but themajority of the “rounds” are between 20 and 80 copies. Sueadvises me that she understands that six of the volunteers havebeen continuously delivering since 1991 – possibly even longer– but her records don’t go that far back! These unsung heroescertainly deserve our appreciation.A distributor in the very early days of the Magazine, the 1970s,was Mary West who remembers piling copies of the magazine intoher son’s pram – with her young son inside too - and deliveringthem all the way from the centre of the village to Hill House Hill.Another former distributor is Muriel Bullingham who recentlysent us one of her reminiscences. “I used to distribute theMagazine in Bircholt Road. My most vivid memory of the timewas when I was delivering on 9/11/2001. I was walking aroundthe estate pushing my mags through the doors when a ladyrushed out shouting “Have you seen the television news – gohome and look – there has been a disaster in America – planeshave deliberately flown into some tower blocks!” So we did justthat – rushed home and put the TV on. I never look at theMagazine now without remembering that moment.”At the Magazine’s Silver Jubilee party in 1996 Mavis and BernardCutler and their happy band of distributors were present andtheir efforts applauded. Sue always welcomes new volunteers.The more we have the easier the job as some rounds could beshortened and the aim is that the volunteers deliver in their ownlocality – the street they live in or even just a group of houseswhere they live.
