To date he has singlehandedlyraised a grand total of £59,000 for the charity. A keengolfer and long-time member of Bohunt Manor Golf Club, Ianwanted to put lost golf balls to good use. He began collecting andcleaning the balls he found on the golf course, selling themthrough various outlets and making sure that all the moneyraised went directly to Macmillan Midhurst.I met up with Ian before he set off for another round of golf andcollecting lost balls. He ran me through the process of turninglost golf balls into cash for charity.“Bohunt Manor Golf Club is part ofLiphook Golf Club and we play on thesame courses. While I am playing, Iam always on the look-out for lostballs and so are all my friends. Sincepeople have found out what I do, theygive me the golf balls they find. “In mygarage at home they all go into a bathof bleach and water until they are readyto be sorted out by quality - gradingthem best, medium and low. I then putthem into crates in my greenhouse, where they dry out before I bag them.“Through my job as a rep I am luckyto have a wide network of shopsstretching from Liphook as far as theIsle of Wight that have agreed to sell thebagged-up golf balls for me. GablesNewsagents in Liphook Square is oneof the shops, where they can bebought. A bag of 20 golf balls sells for£10. Every penny of the sale is then handed over to the charity.“I used to throw the worst golf balls out until a company calledSecond Chance based in Blackpool got in touch with me. Theytake the balls off my hands and then send me money regularlyfrom the sales. So now all the golf balls are raising money forMacmillan.”When Ian started in 2006 he raised a total of £760 in the first yearfor the charity. Since then the money has gone up steadily eachyear and in 2021 it amounted to £12,220.Gabrielle Pike19
