Mayor should be good steward- Jyoti
Calgary(ATB): “Mayor
should be good
steward “expressed
Her Worship Mayor of
Calgary, Ms. Jyoti
Gondek while being
interviewed by our
correspondent, Amrit
Brar last week.
Asian Tribune & Amrit
Sagar Times have
collaborated to
produce “Politics
Everywhere &
Anywhere” and is
maiden episode.
On Housing for
Homeless, Mental
Health and addiction,
Jyoti confirmed that
their Council is very
compassionate and is
in the process of
finalisation of plans to
address these issues
in a most befitting way.
“We are also
concerned that small
business should thrive.
However, whatever
Provincial mandatory
guidelines are in
place, should be
adhered to. Whenever
indoors, must wear
mask and practise
social distancing”
stated Jyoti. On
immigrants’
contributions, Jyoti
stated that the
immigrants play the
very pivotal role in the
growth of City as well
as country. I remember
the great contributions
of (Late) Manmeet
Bhullar and the park in
his memory will go a
long way to guide our
folks and persuade to
give back to society.
On the concerns about
park security, she said
my fellow Councillor
went extra mile to
suggest that public
safety for those who
visit park and reside
being homeless is of
paramount concern
and should be
addressed adequately.
On taxes, Jyoti
showed her genuine
concern. She stated
that Federal and
Provincial taxes are
levied on income
whereas property
taxes are assessed on
the market value. With
the passage of time,
properties have
appreciated manifold
whereas income of
residents including
Seniors are either lost,
reduced or fixed.
Council will be due
diligent to consider
what kind of services
are essential and
based on that tax
increase will be worked
out minutely. Born in
London, England, Jyoti
is the daughter of
Punjabi Indian parents
Jasdev Singh Grewal,
a lawyer, and Surjit
Kaur Grewal. She
immigrated to Canada
with her parents in the
early 1970s, initially
settling in Manitoba.
She was awarded a
Ph.D. in Urban
Sociology from the
University of Calgary.
Jyoti also holds a
Bachelor’s degree in
criminology/sociology
from the University of
British Columbia, and
a Master’s degree in
organizational
sociology from the
University of Manitoba.
On October 18, 2021,
Jyoti was elected the
37th Mayor of Calgary.
Jyoti was sworn in
along with the incoming
City Council on
October 25, 2021
becoming the first
female Mayor in the
city’s history.
Alberta 8,250 cases in five days & positivity
above 15% will ring in new year on bad note
Edmonton(ATB): There
are approximately
15,000 active cases in
the province on
Tuesday and the
positivity rate over the
last five days has
ranged between 17 per
cent and 22 per cent.
In Alberta hospitals,
there are 323
individuals with the
virus and 50 of those in
intensive care units.
Last week, Dr. Deena
Hinshaw said
Albertans should use
freely available rapid
test kits instead of
seeking PCR test
results at a facility to
conserve the
province’s testing
capacity for high-risk
groups, such as
health-care workers,
continuing care
residents and those
who qualify for antibody
treatment due to their
clinical condition.
From :
Yash Sharma
Chief Editor Asian Tribune
Without official
reporting of the rapid
test results, Hinshaw
said Tuesday the
current case counts
reported from PCR
tests are “just the tip
of the iceberg” of how
many cases are
currently in the
province.
“We know from
previous ways that our
PCR testing program
was capturing about
one in four of the actual
cases based on our
serial serology
sampling,” Hinshaw
said. “In the fourth
wave,
we
anticipate that we
were catching about
one in six of our actual
cases with our PCR
testing program.
“It would be expected
that the total number
of people who actually
have Omicron would
be much greater than
is currently captured
in our numbers, again,
because we’re going
from that baseline of
about one in six

PEANUT PRINCESS
I AM AN NRI FROM DISTANT CANADA:
ON MY WAY TO SEASHORE MANGALORE,
I SPENT ONE WINTRY NIGHT IN BANGALORE,
THE FAMED CYBER-CITY OF MODERN INDIA
AT DUSK, NEAR A LEAFY VILLA UNDER A LIGHT,
I ESPIEDA PRETTY PEANUT-PILED PUSHCART,
FAWNED OVER BY A FINE-FEATURED FEMALE;
TALL AND SLIM, SHE WAS SEEKING HER LAST SALE.
PLEASED, I BOUGHT EIGHT PACKETS OF PEANUTS,
SURELY SURPRISED SHE WAS AT THE LONELY CORNER,
A BUYER HAD COME AT THAT LATE HOUR!
I CALLED HER A PEERLESS PRINCESS OF PEANUTS!
AT BREAKFAST IN HARRY’S HOTEL, I SCANNED
THE DINNERS: SILK-ROBED, MANICURED,
BEJEWELED FEMALES WERE APLENTY;
BUT NONE LIKE THE PEANUT PRINCESS IN BEAUTY.
A PENCIL-THIN WAIST, DIMPLES ON FLANKS,
WILD EYES, CHEEKS THAT SLOPED GENTLY;
SHE HAD ALL! YET IT WAS HER PENSIVE LOOKS,
AND WILL TO SURVIVE THAT LENT HER NOBILITY!
WHEN ACROSS THE SEAS I THINK OF HER:
HER DIGNITY, STOICISM, DEMEANOR,
HER SIMPICITY, HER ABJECT POCERTY;
I FEEL LOW AT MY FAKE GENTILITY!

previously and it would be a smaller proportion
we’re capturing in PCR with this change to use
rapid tests.” Hinshaw said in Calgary and
Edmonton, about one-in-three people who are
getting tested for COVID-19 are confirmed as
positive. She noted that rapid tests are not as
sensitive as PCR tests. “If you have symptoms,
you should stay home and away from others
until you feel better, even if you have multiple
negative rapid tests.” When asked how
Albertans who test positive on a rapid test will
be supported with disability or workers’
compensation claims or help with long COVID
symptoms without the official documented PCR
test result, Hinshaw said that is currently being
discussed. “In the meantime, it’s prudent for
Albertans who test positive on a rapid test who
have symptoms and who are not in one of those
high-risk categories, those individuals it would
be prudent for them to notify their primary care
practitioner so that it’s on file for them that they
have had this positive test with symptoms,”
Hinshaw said. “That’s one way of documenting
it in the short term as we work through some of
these details.” Amid the exponential spread of
Omicron threatening health-care workers and
the system’s capacity, Quebec announced
Tuesday health-care workers who have tested
positive for COVID-19 will be allowed to work
under certain conditions.
Premier Jason Kenney said Tuesday this is not
an issue Alberta Health Services is currently
facing, and not under active consideration.
“I don’t think we can completely rule out that if
our hospitals were under the most extreme kind
of pressure that we would have to modify the
self-isolation requirements to maximize the
workforce,” Kenney said.He noted the province
is looking at what other jurisdictions are doing,
including a decision from the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention in the United
States to modify isolation requirements from
10 days to five days. However, NDP deputy
leader Sarah Hoffman said the government has
not offered a plan to deal with Omicron.
“How many waves of COVID will it take before
this premier and his cabinet colleagues realize
that their approach to this public health crisis
has been an abject failure?” she said.
“More must be done to test and trace for COVID
to limit the spread of the Omicron variant and
to support schools, small businesses and so
much more.” Meanwhile in a news release, the
Alberta Teachers’ Association called on
Education Minister Adriana LaGrange to come
up with a plan to keep K-12 students and staff
safe in the New Year.
ATA president Jason Schilling said the
government enacted “mediocre” measures in
the fourth wave in the fall, and called for it to
act quickly to deal with the rapid spread of the
Omicron variant.
www.asiantribune.ca.
“We are also asking for proactive preparation
to manage the consequences of outbreaks
by increasing the availability of substitute
teachers, cancelling the January provincial
examinations and, if necessary, preparing for
a swift but smooth transition to remote
learning. It is not too late to listen and to act,”
said Schilling. Kenney noted the province is
currently discussing how best to proceed with
schools and will make a decision later this
week. “Clearly our strong preference is to
maintain as much as possible in-classroom
instruction,” he said.
“With the very rapid spread of Omicron, we
can expect that the outbreak protocols that
we’ve had to date will likely become obsolete
very quickly, and that many teachers and staff
may be in isolation.”
The province is expected to release a full
breakdown of COVID-19 cases,
hospitalizations, and deaths this week.

Native Village/Country parent’s
background
I was born and raised in a very small village of
Punjab, Lalowal, District Hoshiarpur. My father
is an ex-serviceman, who retired afterserving
almost 17 years in Indian Army. My mom is a
home maker.
Your Early Education
I completed my High School from town Miani
(SPSBS School) close by to my village. I moved
to Jalandhar (CT Public School) for grade 11 th
and 12 th as a Non-Medical student. I have
always been fascinated by the physics which
persuaded me to opt for Science stream.
When & Why You came to Canada
In 2010, Right after my High School, I decided
to move to Canada for further studies. I
completed Electronics Engineering Tech.
Diploma from Niagara College. Coming as an
international student is never easy that too
when you have no support or relatives in
Canada.
My story is similar to many others who want
to settle abroad. I thought I would find a
corporate job after completing my study in
Niagara College which I did. However, I had to
move to Alberta from Niagara Falls to obtain
Permanent Residency in 2015.
Your career advancement initiatives,
volunteer work and present occupation
Currently, I am the CEO of AMZ One Step, a
company that I founded in 2017. I organize
meetups and conferences for Amazon sellers
across Canada. I have been a guest speaker
at many podcasts and spoken at few
international conferences. Also, we have a
Facebook community of 65,000 Amazon service
providers where we can ask questions and get
helped.
Your Regret in Life
I don’t think I have any regrets in my life. I
believe in making mistakes and learning from
them. I am young and living my adventurous
life to the fullest.
Pick Any One of Your Best Achievements
I was featured in the Fortune Magazine for
completing 25,000 infographics for Amazon
brands in March 2021. I would say that was
one of the achievements I am proud of.
Were You Ever Discriminated?
I have never felt discriminated although I have
travelled different parts of the World. I probably
would have ignored if such thing happened.
Are You Happy in Canada?
Yes, I am really happy and proud to be a
Canadian citizen. My siblings have also moved
to Canada. My parents visit me here from time
to time. I am satisfied with what I have
accomplished and Canada has played an
important role. I call Canada my home now.
Kamaljit Singh
Any Comments on Canada’s Culture
As I mentioned, I call Canada my home now
and I respect Canadian culture and vice versa.
I celebrate Diwali, Vaisakhi, and Christmas with
the equal gaiety and fervour. Canada is the
epitome of multi-culturalism.
Any Comments on Canada’s Weather
Canadian summers are full of enjoyment,
however short lived. Living in Edmonton, where
almost half of the year is covered in snow is
not easy. Although, I have adapted some winter
activities, but winters are harsh.
What Brought You Success in Canada?
Not wanting to quit mindset has brought me
success. When I look back in time, I continuously
pushed through even without seeing the quick
results. Whether you are in Canada or
anywhere, this mindset would get you to your
focussed goals. If you believe in it, just keep
working hard and do not quit come what may.
Are You Willing to Help New Immigrants
and How?
Absolutely, I am willing to help any immigrant
who arrive with good baggage. I think we need
to break the traditional transport, restaurant
business mindset. Future is digital. If you need
any help, please reach out to me
kamal@amzonestep.com
Your Message for Canadians of Asian
Origin
Canadians of Asian origin are one of the
successful communities in Canada. It is mainly
because of the hard work they put in. I would
suggest that let’s come forward as a community
and adapt the new changes that Covid has
brought. Future is digital and changes are
already happening around us. If we do not
adapt to the new changes, we will be left
behind. I very well understand that there are
humongous allurements for International
students’ in Western society. However, only
focussed approach, hard work and sincerity to
purpose will enable to conquer career
pinnacles.

Editorial
Milder Omicron
It’s being described as a qualified
good-news story, but with a strict
warning against letting the guard down
and ‘getting ahead of ourselves’. Two
studies suggest that compared with
previous variants of the coronavirus,
the Omicron infections more often result
in mild illness, offering hope that
the surge may be less disastrous than
feared. Though early evidence suggests
that fewer people are needing
hospital treatment, the bigger concern
is the sheer number of cases that
could overwhelm hospitals because of
the incredible rate of transmission.
Already, a lakh cases have been reported
in a single day in the UK. The
reduction in severity is considered to
be a combination of the fundamental
properties of the new variant as well
as high levels of immunity from vaccinations
and previous infections. A
deeper understanding of the severity
of Omicron is still being advised.
As the number of Omicron
cases in the country crosses the 350-
mark, a poignant reminder of the horrifying
scenes of the second wave has
come from the Allahabad High Court.
The judge has been forthright in pointing
to the likely contribution of
panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh
and West Bengal Assembly polls to a
rise in infections that led to many
Covid-19 deaths. The certainty of
lakhs attending rallies without observing
any Covid protocols has prompted
the Bench to urge the Centre for putting
a stop to political gatherings in
election-bound states, and even consider
putting off the UP polls.
It is a tough call and there will
be fierce resistance, but the Election
Commission, which faced criticism for
inaction earlier this year, needs to
mandate lesser crowds and virtual
campaigning wherever possible. As
the PM has asked officials to remain
alert and tasked them with ensuring
fully-functional oxygen-supply equipment
in states, making an exception
for the elections will only encourage
non-compliance elsewhere. Already,
to overcome the reluctance to take the
jab, stringent curbs have been announced
for the unvaccinated by several
states, including Punjab and
Haryana.
