YOU NEED ONLY GLANCE AT
the front page of any newspaper
to grasp the imperfect state of the
world. Issues like poverty, lack of
basic human rights, corruption
and environmental degradation impact
millions of people. But the world also is rich
with prosperity, compassion, ethics, happiness
and freedom, and I know Thunderbird
alumni have contributed to that aspect of the
world in countless ways.
From Jim Alling ’85, president of Starbucks
Coffee International, who works to
create sustainable communities in the rural
areas where it buys coffee, to Ambassador
Niels Marquardt ’80, and his wife Judi ’80,
who are in Africa trying to bring economic
freedom to the people of Madagascar and
Comoros, to Clay and Cindy Cooper, both
2000 graduates, who started Speak Shop,
which links Spanish tutors in Guatemala
with students around the world, the 36,000
men and women who have passed through
Thunderbird have helped to create a better
world. You are the living embodiment of
our mission to educate global leaders who
create sustainable prosperity worldwide.
Thunderbird alumni have been and are
ambassadors, CEOs of Fortune 500 corporations,
international consultants, authors,
doctors, ministers, musicians, artists, mayors,
professional athletes, daring entrepreneurs,
giving philanthropists and everything in
between. As global citizens, Thunderbird
alumni have created hundreds of thousands
of jobs, started tens of thousands of businesses,
invested hundreds of millions of dollars to
help businesses start-up or grow, and aided
tens of thousands through their work with
non-profit organizations.
Perhaps the greatest impact you have had
on humanity has come from the sharing of
Pledge for a
better world
Help us create the next generation of global leaders who
will change the world for the better just as you have
your global mindset, showing others that
there is value and opportunity in all the
world’s citizens and cultures. In this way,
you have touched the lives of millions and
ushered in social change that has transformed
humanity for the better.
With Campaign Thunderbird we are asking
you to help us advance our mission. Our
goal is to raise at least $65 million, funds that
will be used to increase our endowment
support for student scholarships—especially
for those from developing countries—faculty
research, student services, curricular innovation,
technology and facilities.
Your contributions to Campaign Thunderbird
provide us the resources to bring our
unique education to the next generation of
global leaders who will make a difference in
the world just as you have. Your contribution
is more than a gift for a better school; it’s a
pledge toward the making of a better world.
from the president
President Ángel Cabrera
believes that Thunderbird
alumni underestimate
how much they’ve
contributed to a better
world. “I suspect most
alumni aren’t even fully
aware of the impact they
have had on the world,
but because of my
position—having had the
opportunity to meet and
hear the stories of so
many T-birds—I see it
vividly. T-birds have
changed the world.”
