This month's cover feature is of Saskatchewan model, Gabrielle Bonogofski. Her continued 

support and love of the magazine made her a deserved candidate and we are 

very proud to feature her!

Summer 2020 

Welcome to Summer! May we bask in it's 

warmth and loveliness! 

Well, that is our hopes anyways. Alberta 

weather is so unpredictable... Also, living through the 

COVID 19 lock-down has not been a fun ordeal for 

anyone. I've had to cancel many shoots, but with the 

restrictions slowly being lifted, we did get a chance to 

get back out again. Although, it might be short-lived 

with the numbers of positive results increasing rapidly 

as of late. Be smart and safe and protect yourselves 

and your family! 

Let's not focus on that, but rather, on the hopes of 

enjoying the weather and Summer fun. Most kids have 

been locked out of school for the final semester, but 

that has now ended and no more video classes or 

online assignments, right? I think for us life will continue 

on as it has, pretty much staying at home except to 

work and spending quality time with family. 

This month we have an incredible line up of teen 

creatives and models featured! You guys and girls are 

amazing and I am very proud to include you all here. 

Keep doing what you do and never stop. 

One of the stories I am excited to share is that our 

long time contributor, Sophia Lia is set to publish her 

own magazine! Sophia Lia Magazine. It will feature 

advice and help for all aspects of mental and physical 

health. Tips and beauty advice as well as numerous 

stories shared by contributors about their overcoming 

adversities in life. We will keep you updated as things 

get set to launch. 

We have four spectacular covers again this month! 

Three Canadian covers and one International. Amazing 

stories and photos to share. I hope you all enjoy 

this issue of teenLook and the new format. Let me know

TeenLook is very proud to present Ayden Kosko as this month's Cover 

Feature! The Pandemic put a hold on our shooting schedule, but we were 

finally able to get together last week. Even though the forecast was rain 

for the day, when we headed out doors the clouds broke up and the sun 

shined upon us. It was a beautiful experience and a wonderful shoot!

2018/19, Miss Teen Alberta Globe 2018 

with Miss Canada Globe Productions and I 

was a International finalist at Universal Petite 

this past summer to represent Canada on a 

Carnival Cruise to Mexico. 

Since February 2019, I modelled in New 

York Couture Fashion week for French 

designer Lourdes Atencio, Alberta designer 

Michelle Bossert with Enchanted Ever After, 

Ethnos Fashion Gala, BOTP, Weddings On 

The Border Bridal Show, and multiple other 

shows throughout the years for charities. 

I am hardworking, empathetic and a 

passionate model with the dream of being 

a part of the fashion world. I love helping 

people and am trying to positively impact 

others. I am determined to change the world, 

and strive to make a difference. 

It is hard for a model under 5’6” to be 

recognized, as I am 5’4”, I want to change 

the stigma around modeling. I have been 

working hard to show that height, size, age, 

and race doesn’t matter. It is all about what 

is on the inside! Being a petite model, it‘s 

amazing to be able to inspire girls of all 

ages to come out of their comfort zone, try 

new things, have confidence and to follow 

their dreams no matter what.

someone sit and listen to them and interact in conversations 

leaves an impact. 

I also advocate to help and support those who 

have dealt with and are dealing with cyber bullying. 

I feel as if someone should stand up to this, so 

I took it upon myself to stand up against cyberbullying. 

We are all human, and everyone is beautiful 

in their own way. I reached out of my comfort zone 

recently to help protect this girl and get the awareness 

to everyone to let her know she is worth it and 

show that she is more than what people say about 

her. So many friends and strangers rallied behind 

me, it was inspiring and emotional. 

This past year, I was enrolled in Kinesiology and 

Psychology, and I would like to be involved in the 

medical field after I graduate in 2021. 

Another one of my platform focuses on brain 

injuries and concussions. Two years ago, 

I had a severe concussion which almost 

changed my life forever. I had fallen and hit my 

head on concrete. I wasn’t myself; I couldn’t 

remember much, I couldn’t hear things next to me, 

being around lots of people made me over-react 

and I couldn’t handle school. That is why I have 

chosen this as my platform, as I was able to recover. 

We didn’t know how to recognize a concussion, 

and made recovery longer. It has affected 

me personally and I can relate to it, and I want 

to bring education and awareness that recovery 

is possible, and that support is available. I want 

to bring awareness to this since it affects so, so 

many people. Over 1.5 million Canadians suffer 

and live with the effects from brain injuries and 

every 3.5 minutes a Canadian gets a concussion. 

I have partnered up with L.A.B.I.S (Lloydminster & 

Area Brain Injury Society) to help out the members, 

bring awareness, educate, and volunteer my time 

with them to help out as much as I can. Just to have

Teen Look magazine is an honour to 

me. It was a privilege to be able to 

shoot with James for this magazine as 

it was so much fun, and he went out 

of his way to make sure everything

The Magic Mitt quickly and completely removes makeup without using 

a cleanser! You know when your makeup just won't come off, so 

you find yourself rubbing your skin and it becomes super sensitive and 

red? 

Well if so, I feel for you. I found myself almost daily using a plain warm 

cloth, and it would really irritate my skin. It honestly didn't matter 

much how gentle I was, the material just isn't ideal. The mitt is so soft 

and gentle, plus it takes your makeup off in seconds. I really recommend 

this one to add to your skincare routine! 

My Magic Mud 

My Magic Mud teeth whitening powder is an essential part of 

my beauty routine! The aspect that puts this polishing tooth 

powder apart from whitening strips or in-office whitening 

appointments is the fact that it’s natural. I’ve used whitening 

strips several times, and I always find my gums super sore and 

sensitive afterwards. The bleach is very strong on your mouth, 

as well as artificial which is what makes it non-preferable. I’ve 

never found sensitivity from the natural solution. It includes 

organic turmeric, organic peppermint extract and organic cacao 

powder! 

Eleven Shampoo / Conditioner 

Okay, first things first, the scent of this shampoo is to die for. I have 

been using it for a few months now, and my hair feels so healthy, soft, 

and has a shine to it. I tend to be fairly picky when it comes to finding 

the right shampoo- for me it either makes my hair too greasy, too dry, 

I don't like the scent, or the texture just seems off. (like I said, I’m relatively 

picky haha!) 

So back to my point… coming from a consumer like me, you can most 

definitely trust my judgment in regards to this set! You can find this at

Sophia is the current Miss Teenage Edmonton 

2020 title holder and is also passionate journalist 

She has created a series of interviews with 

inspiring Canadian women. 

Recently, Sophia had a chance to connect with 

Co-Executive Producer at Prairie Dog Film and 

Television, Janet Hamley 

When most of us think of the Film and Television industry, 

we think of award winning directors, glamorous 

actresses and genius writers. Although people in 

those vocations are incredibly essential to the business, we 

often don’t think about producers, the hard working staff 

crunching numbers and troubleshooting during productions. I 

had the honour of talking to one of these persevering folks, an 

Avenue Magazine Top 40 under 40 list recipient and member 

of the Directors Guild of Canada, Janet Hamley. We discussed 

everything from the unorthodox path that led her to her career, 

the advice she wishes she could have given a young version of 

herself, and Covid-19’s impact on her industry. 

Janet Hamley began the interview humbly discussing how she 

was thrilled to be interviewed, discussing how she didn’t really 

consider herself as too much of an industry big wig. “It’s funny 

because I don’t really feel like I’m that person yet, but I always 

looked up to those types of people.” Critically acclaimed with 

a jam packed resume of achievements, Ms. Hamley personified 

the phrase “mastery begins with humility.” 

The effects Covid-19 has had on more straight forward and 

well known industries like agriculture or merchandising are 

often easier to understand, but Janet Hamley was able to

give some good news when it came to its impact on her life 

and work. “It’s affecting everything, I miss my team and my 

coworkers, but I am handling it pretty well, my life hasn’t really 

changed too much. Every day I meet with my team on Zoom 

calls, we are trying to have business as usual.” She also discussed 

how this unprecedented international event has impacted 

parents--as mom of a 9 year old herself--she understands 

how the balance between homeschooling and working from 

home is not always easy, and the importance of organization 

and routine during these trying times. 

When asked about what her proudest piece of work or project 

in her industry was, she simply gave a charming laugh, “They 

are all amazing for different reasons. I am very proud of our 

(PDFT’s) work with Tribal because it’s telling important indigenous 

stories as well as being very entertaining. It’s my first 

producing role which is pulling me out of my comfort zone as 

I am usually a number’s person.” Adding to this, Ms. Hamley 

had nothing but praise to give to the company she works for, 

discussing how surrounding yourself with incredible talent and 

inspiring staff makes for a wonderful place to show up for work 

at every day--even if it’s on a zoom call. She attributed the 

great atmosphere and opportunities in part of PDFT’s owner 

Ron E. Scott, who she complimented for bringing together a 

group of extraordinary people to do exceptional things. “I’ve 

been able to grow a team around me of people who support 

me and help me do what I need to do for my career...it’s not 

just going to work every day, it’s really enjoying what you get 

to do.” 

She also discussed how she didn’t always see herself in the vocation 

she is now in, as it seemed to fall in her path as a twist of 

fate when a family member, the head of another film company,

introduced her to opportunities in the entertainment sector. “I 

never thought in a million years that I would work in the film 

industry,” Ms. Hamley said with a chuckle. She talked about 

travelling when she was younger and the universal confusion 

young people feel when deciding on a career path. “You 

feel kind of lost. You don’t really know what you want to do.” 

Then Joe Media Group came along and opened the gates 

to an unforeseen work opportunity. She relayed how she initially 

felt hesitant to pursue a career in an industry she never 

thought would be part of her life, but how overjoyed she is 

that she took that plunge. 

Every inspiring woman seems to have an army of strong, 

independent ladies that helped them along their journey 

to success, and for Janet, those women were her family 

members. She praised all of the women she has had the 

opportunity to work with over the years, but implied that it 

was her mother, her grandmother and her aunts who made 

her the woman she is today. “They were 

all very strong independent women 

who all worked hard and said it like it 

was. They basically showed me that you 

can do anything you put your mind to.” 

Ms. Hamley also discussed the need for 

more women on her side of the industry. 

“There are not enough women and 

film and television, so it’s pretty tough 

to list all the women producers who 

were there before me because there 

really weren’t many.” Ms. Hamley also 

expressed her hopes for more women 

working behind the scenes in the future, 

encouraging other young women to 

look into her vocation. 

When asked for a piece of advice 

she would depart onto a teenage version of herself, she 

scrunched up her nose in thought. “That question can be 

easy and hard. I wouldn’t change anything that led me up 

to this place in my career, but I think confidence is key.” She 

remarked, “I would try to tell myself to have more confidence 

and not be so worried about what other people think. I don’t 

really focus on what other people are saying about me, 

which is something I think a lot of young people do.” 

She added onto that statement by talking about her own 

experiences with failure, and how in the end they were 

what shaped her into the strong woman she is today. “I think 

it’s all about how you handle that failure and get back up 

again.” She talked about the importance of not taking failure 

personally, and realize there are hurdles everyone has to 

go through before achieving the success they strive for. “It’s 

all about believing in yourself, actually wanting to do things 

and then doing them.” After contemplating for a moment, Ms. 

Hamley gave another strong word of advice for others, “You 

can’t give up in the face of difficulty. You need to approach 

things and problem solve. It’s not a matter of ‘I can’t do it!’ or 

‘I don’t know how to do it!’, it’s a matter of getting perspective 

and saying ‘how am I going to do better tomorrow?’ ” 

We then switched directions a bit to Ms. Hamley’s community 

work, and the recognition she has received for her charitable 

efforts while living in Sherwood Park before her move to 

Calgary. She told a heart warming story about the citizens of 

Sherwood Park not having the ability to host their own Terry 

Fox Run, and how her and event planner colleague took 

matters into their own hands. They worked at the helm of the 

fundraising event for 3 years, 

having raised $ 80,000 for 

Cancer research during that time. 

“That really hit home for me. I 

felt like I could definitely make 

a difference.” She spoke very 

highly of the members of her old 

community, saying, “I think that 

volunteering and generosity are 

things the world can never have 

enough of.” 

Ms. Hamley ended her interview 

with me on a high note, inviting 

me to tour the set of Tribal if I 

was ever inspired and in the Calgary 

area. We talked a bit about 

the overall goals of this project to 

interview different Albertan and Canadian inspiring women, 

and what was next for both of us. Janet Hamley proved to be 

the epitome of an inspiring woman in a field where people 

like her are not often at the helm, and a motivating tale of 

self-discovery an unorthodox success. 

Prairie Dog Film and Television is working on season two of 

their new show Tribal, a show that tackles issues plaguing 

First Nation’s communities such as healing lodge justice and 

missing person’s cases, so if you take a look at this APTN 

Original Series, be sure to check in the credits for the name of 

a very notable and inspiring woman!

I live in an area where the majority of the people 

are white. While growing up, I was always 

insecure and felt like an outcast. Especially about 

my skin colour, my curly hair and my height. I 

did everything I could to fit into the social expectations. 

From straightening my hair everyday, to 

purposely slouching to seem small. I never really 

felt like I belonged. 

When I was 15 I went on vacation to Thailand 

where I was approached multiple times by 

strangers, asking me if I was a model. I was 

shocked because I could have never seen myself 

as a model. When we got back, I decided to try 

going to agency to just see what it was like. The 

first thing they did when I arrived was measure 

my height, I thought I would be too tall, but to my 

surprise I was the “perfect” height. We arranged 

a photo shoot and I was told to wear my hair as 

big as possible. I was seriously shook. I ended up 

getting a contract. From there my modelling carrier 

began!

to redecorate my room, and I’ve 

already made so many crafts and 

DIY things and want to buy a 

little decor. Do you know of any 

ways for tweens to make some 

extra cash? 

Hi Breanna! Yes of course, I’ve 

done a little research for you and 

here are some of my favourite 

ideas: 

• Organize a garage sale (once 

safe) 

• Offer pet care services 

• If you enjoy crafting, make 

and sell jewelry. 

• Take your old clothes to a 

second hand store like plato’s 

closet to earn a profit. 

• Offer to shovel the driveway 

or mow the lawn of your 

neighbours for a small profit 

• Do a bottle drive. 

I hope these help and inspire 

you! 

Hey so I was kinda scared to send 

you this message but decided to 

anyways because I really need 

your advice. A couple of my closest 

friends started discluding me 

a lot and they are becoming really 

close and doing things without 

me and I am kinda sad. 

Hi! I know how you feel, and I understand 

the tough position you are 

in. It can definitely be confusing and 

frustrating. If I am being completely 

honest, the best thing you could 

probably do is just be honest with 

your friends. This might sound 

scary, but honesty is always a good 

idea. 

Talk to your friends and explain to 

them how you feel and why them 

discluding you is making you feel 

sad. Chances are, they will be happy 

you were at least honest, and should 

be able to resolve this. I wish you all 

the best, and I know you’ve got this.

Hey, what would be a 

couple ways to cope with 

anxiety? 

Hi! Here are a few techniques 

I’ve learned over the past couple 

years. 

Focus on deep breathing. 

Sometimes when we are feeling 

anxious, it can be easy to 

unintentionally change your 

breathing pattern. A good way 

to recenter and stabilize again 

is to count and take 10 deep 

breaths in and out to clear 

your mind. 

Go for a walk- sometimes the 

best way to cope with anxious 

feelings is to get moving a 

little bit and walk out some 

unnecessary stress. Going for 

a short- or long walk for that 

matter can be super helpful at 

times. 

Writing down your thoughtsmy 

personal favourite! Writing 

down in a journal or even 

just a bit on a piece of loose 

leaf can really help relieve 

your anxiety. Think of it in a 

way of releasing your stress 

and putting the weight on the 

paper versus your shoulders. 

Remember that feeling anxious 

is a normal thing, and be 

sure to talk to a parent about 

how you are feeling.

to such issues. One of her most memorable 

plays that she wrote was at the age of 

seven years old about her brother Arizona who 

is autistic; it became a school sensation and

Arizona.”

Getting to know more about this talented 

young actor and advocate. 

Jackson started acting at the age of nine, landing several national 

commercials for Nissan Motor Company and Pets-mart. He got his 

first big break as the recurring role of 'Charlie' in Disney's animated 

series, 'Puppy Dog Pals' 

He then went on to make his stage debut at The Road Theater's world 

premier production of 'John is Father' which starred Hollywood veteran, 

Sam Anderson. Shortly after, Jackson went on to secure television 

spots on great projects such as, 'Loosely Exactly Nicole and on 'Jimmy 

Kimmel Live' 

Jackson booked his first series regular role as the skateboard-loving 

Young Max, captivating the room by landing an 'ollie' (a skateboard 

jump performed without the aid of a takeoff ramp, executed by pushing 

the back foot down on the tail of the board, bringing the board off 

the ground) over a Disney VP! That would have been something to see. 

Season 2 premiered in March 2020, and the third season is currently 

in production. 

Jackson is passionate about using his platform to advocate for the 

elimination of single use plastics and other environmental causes. 

He has served as an ocean ambassador for Heal The Bay beach 

clean ups and adopted Malibu Surf Rider Beach for 2020. 

Outside of the entertainment industry, Jackson is a talented athlete,

TL - Tell us about you as an actor vs your personal life. 

JD - As an actor, I am continually developing my skill sets. I have learned how to act 

professionally in the workplace and I have learned to manage and balance my time 

between school, work, and friends. In my personal life, not much has changed. I still 

do chores, hang out with my friends, and do school projects, etc. The only difference 

is that my schedule no longer permits me to participate in team sports, so I took up 

surfing. 

TL - Was your journey into acting a difficult one? why or why not? 

JD - My journey was not too difficult. It did take a lot of hard work though. I started 

acting because of a friend and my first audition was for a Nissan Commercial and I 

happened to have booked it. I booked several other commercials and wanted to try 

theatrical acting. It took a good number of auditions for me to get my first guest star 

project and then I got the role of Young Max on Disney Channel’s Sydney to the Max. 

TL - What are the ups and downs being a child actor? 

JD - Great Question! It can be very stressful at times trying to bring your “A-game” to 

school and “A-game” to work. I had previously attended regular school and I had to 

transition to an independent study program when I started the show. It took me a minute 

to get used to balancing the two. You sometimes work long hours and I have had 

to give up things such as participation in basketball and soccer teams. But, I still love 

being an actor and there are also many positives to the job. For example, I get incredible 

opportunities that I would not otherwise get if I was not an actor. I get to meet a 

lot of amazing people. I also get to travel to many places. I am learning so much as a 

Series Regular and that is priceless. 

TL - What are your thoughts on being so young during this difficult time of COVID19? 

JD - This is a really scary time. I’m a little overwhelmed and I haven’t even quite processed 

this whole thing yet, but I definitely know the best thing we can do is stay home 

and that’s what my friends and family are doing. I feel fortunate that I am healthy and 

have a home to stay safe in during this uncertain time in history. 

TL - How have you remained busy during this self isolation period? 

JD - I have been catching up on school work and spending some quality time with my 

family and just trying to be as productive as possible. I try to do physical activity every 

day and I have been spending a lot of time in my home music studio.

I attend the Orange County School 

of the Arts in California. We are a 

performing arts school with a strong 

academic curriculum. This school year 

is my senior year and it came to a 

grinding halt. 

Our prom was canceled. Our grad 

night was canceled. And many of us 

seniors are facing the possibility that 

we will not have a graduation ceremony. 

But we are all in this together. We 

should draw strength from each other. 

As the Class of 2020 enter college, 

we should know now more than

I started modeling last year June 2019. I truly never 

knew it would be such an amazing experience! At 

a young age I’ve always loved being in front of the 

camera, and doing performances in school and 

community plays. I began my modeling journey by 

going to the Patti Falconer agency last summer to 

discuss all the questions I had. I tried a test photo 

shoot and the pictures turned out great! Later on my 

mom and I signed a contract to be a part of Patti 

Falconer models and I’m currently now on their 

main board.

My first taste of runway started with Western 

Canada Fashion week last fall. The 

clothing line I modeled for was Numph; 

which is a Danish clothing line. I met so 

many cool people, and it was so much fun! 

A few months later I traveled to Vancouver 

for Faces West. This is an international convention 

for modeling and acting and it’s a 

great opportunity to be scouted. For my first 

time, I feel like I did pretty well. I got callbacks 

from Select USA (LA, Miami), Dolls 

model management (China, Taipei Taiwan), 

TCM Models & Talent (Seattle), Olympia 

models (Milan), Visage (Japan), and Team 

(Tokyo, Japan). It was great to meet the 

agents and talk to them about my portfolio 

as well as future opportunities. Another exciting 

accomplishment this year was being 

cast to walk runway for the Spring 2020 

Vancouver Fashion week as well as South 

Asian Fashion week. Sadly, Covid-19 took 

those things away from me, but I’m still continuing 

with other fun modeling activities like 

social distance photo shoots, etc. 

I’m also currently a Grade 9 student attending 

online classes from St Gregory school, 

and I’m looking forward to starting High 

School next fall. I really love volleyball and 

play “middle” position for the TSA club in 

Calgary. We have a great Tier 1 team and 

were able to be successful in a few tournaments 

before the season was brought to an 

early end. Looking forward to the rest of 

this year and all the exciting things that the 

future will bring!

you think! Here are the 

4 simple steps to get

FaceTime Portraits was something I didn’t even know existed until I 

came across an interview with Tim Dunk by PetaPixel. After reading 

the article and seeing some of the nuts & bolts of how it was done, 

I thought this was an excellent way to take photos of people while 

still trying to maintain the stay at home suggestions most of us have 

been under since the outbreak of COVID-19. There are many ways 

other photographers have done FaceTime Portraits, and some of their 

images have been stunning. What I wanted to be sure of with my sessions 

is that we all had fun, and we captured images we would all be 

happy with. Obviously, the quality of the images are not going to be 

even close to the ones I can capture with my main DSLR camera, but 

it is an amazing way to connect with people. It gives both sides of the 

session a fun way to capture some of the time they have spent during 

the session while staying safe and staying at home. 

I have done sessions with families, sisters and models, and I am 

always amazed at how creative everyone has been and some of the 

great ideas they have come up with. I usually charge $40 a session 

with $10 of that going to my local food bank. It is a way to make a 

little income during this unusual time and give back to the community 

at the same time.

I like to talk with the people I am 

about to do the session with ahead of 

time about what ideas they have and 

places in their home or around their 

home they would like the photos to be 

taken. I ask them to consider places 

with good light, so we can maximize 

the images. When we are ready to 

start I call them using face time from 

my Mac Book Pro. I have one person 

hold the IOS device (iPhone) have 

them turn the camera around so it is 

using the back camera which in most 

cases is much better quality then the 

front camera. The person holding 

the phone will then move or hold the 

phone how I ask them, and I also 

ask the subject how to look or pose if 

necessary to get the best image we 

can. When everything looks good on 

my computer I press the button that 

captures the image and store it on my 

computer. After the session is done I 

can edit the photos and do my best 

to help give them a little push in the 

right direction. If we have all had fun 

during the session, then it has been 

successful.

Shoot. Nicole has multiple publications of her work 

and I was lucky enough to meet and shoot with her last 

year while in Saskatoon for a casting call.

a part of the creative team. Nicole put together an

Designer pieces from L a r v ä n a . The one of a 

kind wardrobe pieces were absolutely stunning and fit

The style of the photoshoot was a Summer Editorial 

with a 70’s vibe. I had a wonderful time shooting 

with Nicole and with her expert direction, we created

Station 19 is Lalia’s first big break in the acting world. 

She appeared in the film shorts Not A Love Story and 

C’est La Vie. As her film credits blossom, Lalia’s background 

shows she is not stranger to stage life. She was 

a musical performer alongside pop icons Gwen Stefani 

and U2. 

Lately, Lalia is quarantining in Los Angeles with her 3 

brothers and family, playing a ton of chess. The beaches 

just opened up for surfing, so she is hitting the beach 

most days while production on everything in Hollywood 

is shut down! TikTok has now taken over her days, with 

impromptu fashion shows at home! She's gone from 

baking treats to remodeling her room to stay busy! "I am 

so ready to go back to work but I will miss my morning 

surfs!" 

I followed in my older brother's footsteps and was hired 

as his sister in a commercial years ago. My future goal 

is to somehow keep working with my brothers on shows 

and in films. I worked in one film with them all and we 

had a blast!

Dance. His teachers and family decided to 

seek further education in the United States to

Daniel has been training at St. Lucie Ballet 

since August 2019 and has attended The 

Youth American Grand Prix and Universal 

Ballet Competition where he is getting the

During the Youth American Grand Prix Daniel 

was amoung the top 12 in the Senior Division with 

his classical solo. Daniel along with his partner 

Isabella McCool also placed first in the Pas De 

Deux Category and where invited to the NY York 

Finals. He was also awarded scholarships to ABT, 

Peridance and Rock School of Dance. 

Again, much success during The Universal Ballet 

Competition placed second in the Senior Male 

Division with his classical solo and fifth place with 

his contemporary solo. Daniel and Isabella also 

placed first in the Pas De Deux Category in the 

Junior Division. Daniel was awarded scholarships 

to The Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, Ballet West 

and Complexions Contemporary Ballet. He was 

also the very first recipient of UBC’s newest award 

“The So Danca Star Award” for Best in Class. 

Daniel exemplifies everything it takes to make it to 

a Prestigious Company one day. He is full of hard

He often spoke of the Emancipation Proclamation, 

an edict issued by US President Abraham Lincoln on

Land. I may not get there with you. But I 

want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, 

will get to the promised land! And so I'm happy, 

tonight. I'm not worried about anything. 

I'm not fearing any man! 

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of 

the Lord!!" 

While there were many protests during the Civil 

Rights Movement, King never encouraged the use of 

violence. He stated the opposite. 

"We who in engage in nonviolent direct action 

are not the creators of tension. We merely 

bring to the surface the hidden tension that is 

already alive. " 

He revered the late Mahatma Gandhi's use of nonviolent 

resistance to lead the successful campaign or 

India's independence from British rule. 

Who do we call heroes? I hope we look up to those 

with high moral values and beliefs. We need to 

judge them by the content of their character and 

nothing else. 

We should also realize that sometimes we need to 

look deep within ourselves to find the truth. Do our 

research of both sides to an argument to achieve 

an educated answer and response to the question 

and ideas set before us. The mob generally runs 

off course and far from the righteous path it should 

be on. Don't be led into uneducated rhetoric and 

hysteria. People make mistakes. We are all guilty of 

misguided judgments or actions. But learning from 

them and changing is the first step. During a time 

of difficulty, we need to come together, not apart. 

Division will not make a nation stronger, we have 

already seen the consequences of this so far. 

As a father with three teenage daughters at home, I 

believe that as a responsible parent, I need to teach 

and guide my children to understand the changes 

and events in the world around us. We live in a 

world full of history, both good and bad. I grew up in 

the 80s, probably one of the most politically incorrect 

decades of recent years. The decade we have 

just started is full of strife and suffering, and I am left 

dazed and confused by the changes I am seeing. 

Be strong, be vigilant and seek God in your times of 

trouble and find your courage in Him. 

"World peace through nonviolent means is 

neither absurd nor unattainable. All other 

methods have failed. Thus we must begin anew. 

Nonviolence is a good starting point. Those of 

us who believe in this method can be voices 

of reason, sanity, and understanding amid the 

voices of violence, hatred, and emotion. We 

can very well set a mood of peace out of which 

a system of peace can be built."

young age. He began with the Parkland Community 

Basketball league at the age of 7 and has not 

stopped since. Over the years he has developed 

great skills from many great Coaches, and this has 

afforded him many opportunities and recognition 

within the EYBA organization as well as the Metro 

League through school. 

He has played in the EYBA All Star tournament, 

has won many awards over the years and been 

recognized by Metro Athletics not only for Basketball 

but Volleyball as well.

eing a teenager in this world is not easy. 

We all know that. People always telling 

you cannot do something because of 

your age. Well I’m writing this to prove you can 

achieve what ever you want. I am Rebecca 

Pitt and I’m a fifteen-year-old photographer. I 

started on my birthday at the age of fourteen 

with nothing but some second-hand equipment 

and a dream. I wanted to take photos and 

share them with the world. It’s a big dream to 

fulfil isn’t it? I strongly believe if you want it that 

bad, you can get it. 

I started taking images of nature and animals 

using automatic settings. Mainly the close-up 

and sports mode settings. I found them particularly 

useful. However, after a few months, 

I knew I could improve more by using manual 

so eventually I did. I can tell you it is not 

straightforward. It’s a long bendy road. With 

walls blocking your every movement. I had 

to practice for hours on end. This obviously 

was not easy with school. I had to use my time 

wisely. I asked photographers for their advice. 

This helped me know what the most important 

things was to know. It took a lot of effort 

to get the hang of it but it’s something I love. 

This made every second so enjoyable I really 

liked it so I made a Instagram page called 

everything_photogra_phy and uploaded my 

photos when I first started. Not only did I share 

my photography, I shared my love for the 

environment and wildlife. I used each post to 

share an important message. Whether it was 

about climate change, why we need to protect 

animals or informing people what happens to 

animals all over the world. I got a lot of negative 

feedback. People saying, I didn’t deserve 

my followers… people saying my photos are 

awful and basic… I ignored everyone of them 

because I had lots of people who were supporting 

me. I knew I was doing something I 

loved, and people liked it so why give it up for 

a few people with negative attitudes? Giving in 

is easy. Pushing through is the challenging part. 

On my birthday this year (6th august) it will be 

two years since I started photography and that 

page. I have already grown to 8000 followers 

who help me improve with constructive criticism 

and support everything I do. I even have my 

own business now. I take photos of businesses 

products. I may not be the best photographer 

or have the best equipment, but I know what 

makes a good image. I use my creativity to take 

images that they can use. I am so proud of how 

far I have come. Cannot wait to see what the 

future holds. 

If an average girl like me can reach my passion 

you too can. Work hard, love what you do and 

believe in yourself.

Hey Levi!! So excited to be chatting with 

you. You recently launched your new project, 

called "Songs That I Grew Up To". Can 

you tell us what this project means to you? 

Yeah! It’s been super fun. I grew up in a super musical 

household, my Dad’s a songwriter and raised me on a really 

interesting variety of songs. It’s easy to describe the kind 

of music you grew up on, but I wanted to show the fans. 

Me and my Dad just so happen to produce these three 

tracks together and what better time to release them when 

everyone is at home on their phones. 

What has the fan reaction been to this new project 

so far? 

Its been so fun shifting gears a little bit and just putting out 

music that had a huge impact on me. Also, it’s weird putting 

out music I didn’t write, in a good way. 

What do you hope your supporters will think of the 

new music?

shows around town they continued to support. 

What do you want your message to be towards your 

fans? What do you want your fans to take away from 

your music and shows? 

I want them to know how excited I am to get out of

Tracks Canada All Genres Chart. It was produced by Toronto’s 

multi-platinum, award-winning Terence (TEE) Lam 

of Kuya Productions, who wrote Billboard-charting single 

“Here” for Grammy award winner Alessia Cara. 

“SAY” discusses the importance of communication and emotional 

intelligence in relationships: “If I don’t speak on us, it 

won’t get no better.” Her second single “LOSING MYSELF”,

“New Music Daily” Playlist. The lyrics are about healing 

from the pain of losing a part of oneself after heartbreak and

has performed as many as 75 live performances in a single

CERTAINLY SOMETHING 

Danica Medez - Liakos is probably the coolest 

math teacher you may ever meet! She is a 

fashionista and blogger and Instagram influencer 

turned author. She has written her first installment 

of a young adult book series, 'The Phantom's Tea' 

I had the pleasure of getting to know this talented 

lady better and learning more about her work, 

and boy... was it certainly something! 

TL- Hi Danica, it's great to finally speak with you 

about your book series. Tell us a little about it. 

DML: I’ve written a children’s horror book series 

called The Phantom’s Tea! The first book in the collection 

is All Are Welcome at the Silent Circus. It’s an 

adventure thriller with a ton of twists and turns. The 

book is narrated by a boy who has been a bit of a 

bully and finds himself trapped in some crazy circus! 

My books are inspired by the Goosebumps series! I 

even had Tim Jacobus, original Goosebumps cover 

artist do my cover as well! The Phantom in the story 

is a moody, gossiping thing that loves the drama! I’m 

sure we all know a few shady Phantoms in our lives! 

TL- You mentioned bullies, what has been your 

experience with bullies when you were in 

school? 

DML: Funny enough I didn’t have bullies until my 

adult life! I guess it all started when I began to put 

myself out there online with my Instagram and blog 

Certainly Something. There were times the bullying 

was so hurtful, I thought I should just close everything 

down. But then I realized, I have a voice, a message, 

and a light! Nobody will ever silence my ability to 

spread kindness and love! Nobody can ever pull you 

down if they are beneath you in the first place! Stay 

kind. Stay strong. Stay yourself. The more successful 

you get, sometimes the more people will have something 

negative to say. That’s because you’re shining in 

their eyes. Not your fault. They just can’t handle your 

rays. The Sun doesn’t stop for anyone, why should 

you? 

TL: What inspired your blog Certainly Something? 

I have to admit, it certainly is a catchcy 

name, how did you come up it? 

DML: Certainly Something is a true lifestyles blog. I 

just wanted it to be an authentic place for people 

to go to and grow inspired by how much I love 

life! Every single person and thing is a certainly 

something! I’m sure you’ve heard that before! My 

whole life people would tell me, “oh my gosh she is 

certainly something!” Well so are you! We all are! 

My blog celebrates all those certainly somethings! I 

don’t focus on one topic ever. Life is not one sided! I 

celebrate everything! I love my blog! It is a random 

collection of everything! 

TL: How did you create such a successful brand? 

DML: I was kind and willing to work with everyone 

who was gracious enough to work with me. Anytime I 

worked with someone I would thank every single person 

in the room twice. I’ve also made it a point to network 

and mingle with a diverse group of bloggers! I 

kept my options open and my smile on! Women and 

girls are entrepreneurial at heart. Meaning, we are 

do-ers and creators. We are go-getters and hang 

tough-ers. My mom inspired me to be myself and go 

against the trend. She is an icon.

TL: How do you balance being a teacher, blogger, 

and author all at the same time!? 

DML: That’s the certainly something magic! I work at 

a school that has an extended day. I get up at 4:00 

in the morning and get home around 6:00 in the 

evening. The weekends I really focus more on my 

blog and books! There are many moments where all 

of these worlds collide! I remember once I had to 

teach my last period class and run into the bathroom 

to change into a super high fashion outfit because 

I had to rush and get on a train and attend NYFW 

(New York Fashion Week)! My students saw me go 

into the bathroom with a boring work dress on and 

come out red carpet ready! Another time I went to the 

Berta runway show. I was so tired from teaching that 

I didn’t notice Kevin Jonas from the Jonas Brothers 

sitting across from me! There were also days where I 

couldn’t attend some awesome star-studded events 

because I had Parent Teacher Conferences! It feels 

like I have a secret life and I absolutely love it! When 

Ms. Mendez-Liakos is stressed Danica comes out and 

takes over! When Danica is over the heels and outfits, 

Ms. Mendez-Liakos is there to teach some equations! 

TL: What is one piece of advice you would give 

to young girls who want to follow in your footsteps? 

DML: Be everything you possibly can….even if it 

doesn’t make sense to people. Be a teacher by day 

but insta-sensation by night. You can be smart AND 

well- dressed. You can teach math but also love the 

world of fashion. You can love to write but also walk 

a catwalk. You can blog but also be shy. You can be 

loud and proud but also scared. We define ourselves! 

Women can be anything they want! 

TL: What is next for you? 

Welcome to the imagination of the Phantom. 

The Phantom's Tea is a children's Horror series 

centered on the gossip of a bitter Phantom. Each 

book has an adventure and mystery to be solved.

Life for Priyanka recently is based at home since 

the COVID 19 Pandemic. Her daily routine 

consists of morning studies via online schooling. 

Sometimes Priyanka goes sunbathing for health 

reasons. At noon she learns some drawing and math 

lessons. In the afternoon she does some exercise. 

As a good Citizen of Surakarta, Priyanka wants to 

share blessings with people in need. She gives food 

to many homeless people, some lower-class workers 

and beggars. In this case, Priyanka learned that 

there are so many unfortunate people who never 

complain about anything regarding their conditions. 

Those who had received the food, treat it as gifts or 

blessings from above. Because of this, Priyanka has 

learned gratitude. 

As a member of a big family, Priyanka understands 

much about her tasks and responsibilities. She knows 

when she should act as a big sister and when she 

should act as a good daughter. Priyanka never hesitates 

to ask for advice on how to be a good quality 

girl. 

For the issue of #BlackLivesMatter. Priyanka really 

cares about it, since she made friends with many 

people. In the Eastern part of Indonesia, there are 

many citizens of colour; they are Mollucas, Flobamoras 

(Flores, Sumbas, Timorese) and Papuan, and 

come to Java to study or seeking work. They are incredibly 

nice and caring people and they get along 

well with Priyanka. 

For modelling activities, Priyanka had the opportunity 

to model for a famous designer Joko SSP and 

the famous clothing line, Pisalin. It is really a good 

opportunity for her to fill out her modelling portfolio. 

In the next step, she will join an audition for an 

upcoming fashion catwalk and she wants to try some 

Advertising casting 

too. 

As a Teen Model, 

she wants to keep 

inspiring to other 

teens. At least 

helping other teens 

to sharpen their 

talents.
