Welcome to the October issue of teenLook! 

Every month it just keeps getting better and better, for that I am 

Thankful. You guys continue to make this publication something 

to be proud of. Keep spreading the word and send in your 

submissions to be featured here. I am so happy to see how far the 

magazine has reached. This is evident by the talented teens from 

all across the world featured in this issue. 

I want to take a moment to clear up any confusion... Dara is my 

PR girl, and the one most of you chat with on Instagram. A super 

cool friend, yes, she is that! But not my wife, lol. She helps hustle 

and promote the publication while taking care of her own business 

ventures and her own family. 

October 14th is Thanksgiving, a time to remember and reflect 

on the blessings; family, friends and the events that shape our 

lives. Hold them close and never take them for granted. I am very 

proud to feature my daughter this month as the Cover Girl and 

share about her creativity and desire to learn. (I think she gets it 

from her dad!) I hope her story will inspire you guys. 

I have been pushing my creativity this month too; putting together 

a special Halloween issue coming out on the 15'th. It will have 

some spooky features and showcase some pretty cool costumes! I 

can't wait for you all to see it.

Ihave been dancing since I was three and I’ve loved every 

minute of it. Dance is a way for me to stay active, express 

my emotions and make amazing friends. I took a Walk The 

Talk Modelling course in November 2018 and really enjoyed it. 

Modelling quickly became an interest in my life. 

I’m excited to see where modelling and dance will take me and 

what new opportunities will arise.

13 year-old from California, US 

Isabella has been dancing for 

six years now and competing 

4 of those at the Carlsbad 

Dance Centre. She trains in ballet, 

acro, pointe, contemporary and jazz 

but especially loves acro and contemporary. 

She started modelling this year 

and was picked up by Details Dancewear 

and selected to be one of the 

web models for the relaunch of their 

new site. She is an ambassador for 

Bows by Shae and part of a few 

support groups on IG that support one 

another and others on a daily basis. 

She is just getting started in acting and 

very excited to see where this new 

journey takes her. 

Isabella believes in hard work, dedication 

and loves supporting and inspiring 

others to go for their dreams. Her 

inspiration is her mother, whose love, 

commitment and support have allowed 

her to do what she loves most, 

which is dance and modelling.

Ihave been modelling 

with the Patti Falconer Agency 

since September 2018. 

I participated in Western Canada 

Fashion Week, in Edmonton, representing 

the brand ISCO and in Vancouver 

Fashion Week representing 

YONFA. 

In Calgary, I participated in Make- 

Pop runway and modelled for the 

brand SuperDry. I also partnered 

withTrenalaine Cosmetics 

for a bridal photoshoot. 

This year I will be a delegate in Faces 

West in Vancouver and will be modelling 

in Jamaica with Snap Retreat in 

February 2020. 

I have grown a considerable 

amount of respect for models 

coming into the industry; it isn’t 

as easy as it looks. Through modelling, 

I have met amazing people and 

have received many opportunities. 

I love travelling and learning about 

new cultures/traditions and discovering 

new cuisine. 

I enjoy playing soccer and sewing. 

Art is very calming for me, and I try to fit 

it into my day to day life whenever I can. 

My background is half Canadian and 

half Mauritian(from Mauritius Island). 

My mother speaks beautiful French, 

and over the years I have learned to 

understand the language, 

but have yet to know how 

to speak it. 

The beach is my happy 

place, especially in Mauritius 

Island. 

I give thanks to all the 

beautiful people in my 

life. Parts of everyone’s 

personality has made me 

who I am today and I 

look forward to what

Gabriel Silva - actor and model 

14 year-old from the Lone Star state of Texas, US 

Gabriel L. Silva can be seen flying across the screen in the

How to Be a Bawse: 

A Guide to Conquering Life 

For almost a decade, Lilly Singh, 

better known as SUPERWOMAN 

has been entertaining us with her 

YouTube channel. I've been a fan and 

so have my three girls. So I was so 

impressed that my favourite Desi girl 

was getting her own shot as a TV host 

on the NBC network. 

Lilly is a Canadian girl that truly 

inspires and has been inspired. She 

pours out her heart and knowledge 

in her first book 'How to be a Bawse' 

revealing her vulnerabilities and 

strengths. I mean how much more 

real and vulnerable can she get then 

by showing us her comedic struggle 

to pronounce the word 'vulnerability'? 

She shares how her depression was 

the catalyst for her to begin creating 

YouTube content. The desire to create 

and follow her dreams. This story of 

success is completely relevant to how 

we can find our own direction by being 

a "Bawse" in whichever direction our 

dreams take us. The book came out in 

2017, but is as fresh today, especially 

if you download the audiobook, read 

by the author. Lilly's flare and charisma 

shine through in her reading. She is 

equally entertaining to listen to as she 

is to watch!

There is no secret to success. It 

takes hard work. Lots and lots of 

hard work. 

Being a 'Bawse' is the step above 

just being a boss. A Bawse excels 

in both personal and professional 

settings. It's not just about surviving 

life, but conquering it. You have to 

take charge of your dreams and 

push yourself to succeed. There is 

no plan 'B' only plan 'A' Pour all of 

your passion and desire into what 

you want to do and don't settle 

for anything less. There are no 

shortcuts to the top. It takes hard 

work and discipline. Lilly explains 

that you have to take the stairs, not 

the escalator...(or an elevator!) 

If to prove her point in the book she 

wrote two years ago, Lilly is showing 

us where her passion and drive have 

taken her. Taking over the time slot 

from Late-night host Carsn Daly. 

Lilly's passion for gender equality 

and girl power have led her to many 

form many movements and working 

with charities. 

In 2017, Lilly was announced as a 

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, to 

advocate for children's rights. She 

has led a campaign called "GirlLove", 

promoting girls to end girl-ongirl 

hate. With this, she created a 

"GirlLove" rafiki bracelet with the 

brand ME to WE, and has helped 

girls to gain education, including 

overseas in Kenya and India. 

In July 2018, Lilly 

traveled to South Africa 

as a UNICEF Goodwill 

Ambassador to meet the 

students of elementary 

schools to speak out 

against bullying and 

classroom violence. 

"A Little Late with Lilly" 

debuted Sept. 16 on 

NBC. 

My best take-aways from Lilly's 

book is our love and admiration 

for Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. I 

love the old school wrestling years 

too! More seriously though, make 

mistakes. They are the path leading 

to success. Never give up and 

believe you are worth it. 

Lilly's success is the proof of her 

philosophy. It's not just mere words 

spoken She walks the Talk!

Our past cover girl 

featured locally 

Recently, Talayna was featured in 

the Flagstaff Community Press. They 

requested to use issue 2 of teenLook 

which featured Talayna as the cover 

girl! 

Emily Tanton wrote the fantastic 

piece featured in the paper. 

It's always a great feeling to see our 

featured teens continuing on the path 

to their goals. 

Not only is Talayna pursuing her 

passions, she continues to give 

back to her community and raise 

awarness for the those in need. Her 

unbreakable spirit and her genuine 

attitude continue to be an inspiration 

to everyone her life touches.

Daysland pageant queen takes home Miss Teen Canada title 

two years in a row despite serious health issues

Talayna Ekelund has been 

doing pageants for about four 

years and in that short time has 

won eight national-level pageant 

titles. 

Miss Teen Canada Commonwealth 

International 2018-2019 

is her most current and recognized 

title; she will be taking it 

with her to London, England at 

the end of November to compete 

for the Miss Teen World 

CWI title. 

“All of my titles mean a great 

deal to me, however, this one is 

most significant as I am able to 

represent my country while 

doing something I love.” 

Ekelund is the first rural Alberta 

resident to be crowned 

Miss Teen Canada CWI as most 

winners are generally from 

large city centres like Vancouver 

or Toronto. 

Her national pageant titles 

allow her to do volunteer and 

charity work all around 

Daysland and Camrose. She 

lives just outside Daysland and 

attends school in Camrose. 

“This title gives me the ability 

to go out in the communities 

and give more 

representation to smaller organizations 

and act as a 

spokesperson to give a voice to 

local organizations.” 

Ekelund’s charity work took 

on a whole new meaning to her 

after a battle with diabetic ketoacidosis 

(DKA) last October 

nearly took her life. 

Last Oct. 19, Ekelund was 

rushed to the Stollery Children's 

Hospital at the University 

of Alberta after becoming 

unresponsive at the hospital in 

Daysland. 

After Ekelund had been stable 

for a large 

part of the day, 

no one was expecting 

her 

heart to stop 

not once, but 

twice, in less 

than 48 hours. 

“Everything 

shut down after a mysterious 

infection drove my body into 

progressive shock. 

“I spent five-and-a-half 

weeks in the Stollery.” Unfortunately 

for Ekelund, her femoral 

nerve was nicked when she 

was hooked up to life support. 

“Just weeks before I was set 

to compete for Miss Teen 

Canada CWI, I was having to 

relearn how to walk. Luckily, 

the Commonwealth organization 

gave me the title again this 

year so that I have the opportunity 

to compete.” 

The Commonwealth organization 

believed that Ekelund 

would be best fit to represent 

Canada in the 2019 Miss Teen 

World CWI competition and so 

gave her the Miss Teen Canada 

CWI title for a second year so 

that she could be eligible to 

compete. Ekelund will be competing 

against young women 

from 23 other countries for a 

chance at the international title. 

“If I were to win this world 

title, I would like to continue 

representing charities and organizations, 

but at the same 

time my attention needs to 

come back to school work. I 

want to put my passion and 

motivation towards helping 

other people.” 

After her bout with DKA, 

Ekelund is determined to be a 

voice for kids with diabetes as 

she herself struggles with Type 

I diabetes. She is passionate 

about inspiring people to overcome 

the obstacles in their 

lives. 

“Just to be given the opportunity 

to go from flat-lining 

twice to what I’m doing now is 

a miracle.” 

Recently, Ekelund was given 

the opportunity to be on the 

cover of TeenLook magazine, 

an experience which she says 

was an honour. 

The front cover of TeenLook 

magazine was actually 

Ekelund’s second time being 

featured in the magazine. Her 

Miss Teen Canada CWI title, as 

well her time in the hospital 

last year made her an inspiration 

to many, prompting an article 

in the first issue of 

TeenLook.

“Pageants give me many opportunities 

with 

public speaking 

and community involvement, 

but 

they can only take 

me so far and eventually 

it becomes 

up to us to take our 

futures into our 

own hands. 

“I want to do pageants as 

long as I feel comfortable entering 

them, but eventually I 

would like to become a pediatric 

endocrinologist. I know 

that I will have to take a step 

away from pageants to focus 

on my medical degrees.” 

Ekelund’s main motivation 

for competing in pageants 

comes from her desire to support 

and bring awareness to 

“ 

local businesses and charities. 

“Pageants have given me experience 

with public speaking 

and given me the confidence to 

come out of my shell and present 

myself as a more outspoken 

person.” 

Since her time in the Stollery, 

Ekelund is happy to announce 

that she has 80 per cent nerve 

recovery in her leg, though 

they are unsure if she’ll regain 

the other 20 per cent. She’s impressed 

with how far she’s 

come. 

“Coming from that experience 

I just want to look at life 

and say ‘Go for it.’ You don’t 

have time to sit back and think 

about what can go wrong. 

“I am going to look at my life 

with so much more renewed 

interest and more motivation 

to pursue the things that I have 

yet to do and to take the opportunities 

and lead them by 

storm. 

“Anything that I can go out 

and do I am open to. I’m a very 

busy person but these are all 

things I like filling my time 

with.” 

Ekelund also has a proclivity 

for arts and crafts and even 

helped decorate the graduation 

ceremony for the 2019 Our 

Lady Mount Pleasant (OLMP) 

graduates, a class she would’ve 

been graduating with had her 

illness not set her back a semester. 

Ekelund has used her pageant 

titles the best way she 

knows how and has been a 

positive presence in any community 

she visits. 

“In the end, I want to participate 

in enough community 

volunteering and charity work 

to bring attention to the organizations 

who need it; in the 

end, I want to give these places 

the means to help as many people 

as possible.”

My efforts have 

already been 

acknowledged and honoured 

in this magazine. I 

am very thankful and happy 

about that. 

I have always been a very ambitious 

person with my goals being 

aimed high. 

I have always been striving for them to 

fulfill my dreams. 

My initial interest was dancing; I have 

been dancing since four years old, on 

both large and small stages. Acting has 

been picking my interest since I was a 

baby, and the stage was pulling me in. 

My adventure with modelling started by 

accident. A photographer spotted me 

around my neighbourhood, he asked 

for my mum’s contact info and if I would 

be interested in his new project. It turned 

out to be a photoshoot session for a 

particular clothing brand. 

After some time, I started liking all of 

this, a kind of escape from the real 

world. After the shoot, I played 

in a small episode of a Polish TV series 

and realized that the acting in front 

of a camera is my second world that I am 

still discovering. 

Being inspired by the above, I started 

to look for different offers from various 

photographers to understand better the 

world I am interested in. I started going 

to different make-ups trials where I have 

met fantastic people; I also became more 

familiarized with photography at these 

trials. 

I started receiving different proposals, 

and I have discovered my new passion 

which currently I cannot imagine my life 

without! 

Soon I received invitations to photoshoots 

for different boutiques and 

clothing shop brands. I have always been 

getting very positive feedback after the 

shoots from photographers, make-up 

artists, etc. They were saying that working 

with me is great, easy and fast. It was not 

always that easy as it seemed. 

Though many famous and known 

modelling agencies liked me, regardless 

of the fact, I do not have 

the required height. Overall, I 

did not give up, and I will push 

toward my goals. 

I want to prove and show to 

everyone that despite obstacles, 

you should not resign 

from your dreams. 

As the saying goes, “If 

they throw you out the 

door, come back through 

the window.”

12 year-old from Ontario, CA 

Mariangela has been 

dancing at the age of 

3.5 years, at Canadian 

Dance Unit, formally known 

as Joanne Champman. 

Two years ago Mariangela joined 

the Part-Time Competitive Team 

at CDU and has been part of the 

dance studio since. 

Discovering her love for dance 

in her very first jazz and hip hop 

class at the age of 4. Attending many 

dance workshops and technique classes 

such as Jump, Nuvo, CDX, Acro Alliance 

and Matricks, Mariangela 

earned Tap, Hip Hop 

and Athletixs Scholarships. 

Not only does she dance, but six years 

ago she joined the Olympium Synchronized 

Swim Team in Etobicoke Ontario. 

There she swam with the Junior 

Provincial Team for four years earning 

many 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. 

Mariangela's last year of Synchro was 

bittersweet! She had decided that she 

no longer wanted to swim, but her love 

was dance. Her last year of Synchro

October is a great time to give back and be grateful, 

especially as Thanksgiving is just around the corner! 

In my opinion, it’s really important to help the less 

fortunate and express your gratitude towards others. 

Some ways to express you’re thankful can be as simple as just 

saying those words. Sometimes we can assume someone else 

knows that deep down we are really grateful for something 

they did for us, but often, people appreciate to actually hear 

the words thank you. 

Along with being thankful, giving back and helping out either 

a friend, family member or community is an effective way to 

say thank you. Some inspirations include donating extra food 

to a local food drive, donating your time to an organization 

to help others and even offering to look after the neighbour’s 

kids for a few hours. These things are small, but they truly 

make a big difference in at least one person’s life! 

For this month’s special feature, I decided to share a family 

favourite fall-time treat! These pumpkin squares are so 

delicious- I’m pretty sure you’ll love them. Be sure to share

PUMPKIN SQUARES 

Ingredients: 

For Cake 

1/2 cup butter or margarine 

1/2 cup granulated sugar 

1/2 cup packed brown sugar 

2 eggs 

14 oz canned pumpkin (not filling) 

1 cup all-purpose flour 

1 tsp cinnamon 

1/4 tsp nutmeg 

1/4 tsp ginger 

1 tsp baking powder 

1/2 tsp baking soda 

1/4 tsp table salt 

For Frosting: 

4 oz soften cream cheese 

1/4 cup butter or margarine 

1 tsp vanilla extract 

2 cups icing sugar 

Directions: 

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and grease a 9 x 13 baking pan. 

Cream butter and sugar together. Beat in sugar then eggs one at a time. 

Slowly beat in pumpkin. 

Add remaining ingredients, stir, and scrape batter into greased pan 

Bake at 350 F for about 25/27 minutes, until inserted toothpick comes out 

clean. 

Cool for at least 60 minutes, then frost with cream cheese icing. 

Cake- 

Frosting- 

Beat cream cheese, butter and vanilla until smooth. 

Gradually add icing sugar until frosting is combined and fluffy. 

Enjoy! I hope you love it.

I’m lucky to live near the beach 

and the New Plymouth Costal 

Walkway, in New Zealand. 

Besides spending time with family 

and friends, some of my hobbies are 

swimming, netball, photography, touch 

rugby, calculus and modelling. 

I’ve been modelling for a year now 

and have gained so much confidence, 

and self belief. 

Modelling has also given me many 

new experiences and pushed me out 

of my comfort zone. 

I’m very grateful for all the new skills 

I've learnt such as posing, make up and 

runway skills which I know I will use 

beyond my modelling career. I’ve 

met some amazing people too and 

have been able to compete in our 

local pageant where we raised 

money for a local charity.

Teens with Dreams! 

There are many things 

we hold precious in 

this lifetime, but none more 

than your own children. I 

am so blessed to be a father. 

For me, it's one of the 

greatest joys and reasons 

for living. The most interesting 

thing about being a 

parent is seeing your personality 

and traits reflected 

back from your child. I didn't 

realize half of the things I do 

subconsciously until I saw 

them in my own children. It 

can be quite awakening and 

humbling. It also can make 

you feel very proud. I have 

three beautiful daughters 

with my wife. This is the 

reason I chose to feature 

my oldest daughter, Nicole. 

She is fifteen, mixed-blood 

as her mother is a Filipina, 

and a very creative soul as 

I find myself to be. Since 

the day she was born, we 

did everything together. 

She was a part of every film 

shoot and most of my photography 

ventures. 

Of my three girls, she was 

the only one who never 

complained when I needed 

a model to test new gear. 

I find now that as she gets 

older, it takes more convincing 

to get her to pose for the 

camera. I think she gets that 

from me, as I prefer to be 

on the shooting side, rather 

than be the model. I want 

to share her story about 

being creative and the desire 

to chase her dreams. 

She came to me one day, 

asking if she could open a 

bank account. I was dumbfounded. 

We always make 

sure our girls have everything 

they need and have 

their school trust funds in 

place, so was curious as to 

this request. I found out 

she was building worlds 

for a Roblox developer. I 

had no idea she had taught

herself how to design and 

build game elements online. 

One of the perks of this 

new venture was the need 

to collect payments for her 

work. I sat down with my 

little girl to have a conversation.

We have had many conversations, but this is the 

first time we have sat down to discuss things so 

formally. (laughs) 

Nikki 

Yeah, a little weird! Haha... 

Ok, well, let's try and be serious here now. 

(serious voice) 

So, tell me, what exactly is it you do as a game 

developer? 

I am helping build a world and setting for a 

game called Far Lands 2 on the Roblox 

server. 

That sounds pretty cool! 

I used to do some game developing myself when 

I was your age. -Back when 4k was not the 

screen resolution, but rather, it was your computer's 

memory. Actually, that's pretty sad... 

Ah, ok... 

How did you get into that? 

Well, Roblox has been around for awhile 

and there were always lots of interesting 

games to play. I was inspired by the worlds 

I played in and thought it would be fun to try 

and create my own. 

I taught myself how to use Roblox Studio, 

and just went from there. 

I know the feeling exactly! 

How did that lead to you working on 

Far Lands 2? 

At the time I was playing a popular game 

series called "After the Flash" 

The developer, Chad the Creator, was 

looking for help on a new game, and held a 

builder's contest. 

I found it online the day before it ended and 

just decided to go for it! 

Only one day... hmmm, trying to think which day 

you stayed home from school because you were 

'sick'. Just kidding. 

How did you do? 

To my surprise I came in first! Chad was 

really impressed with my work. 

So, from there you started working on the new 

series? 

Yeah, Chad chose the best three or four 

builders and we all started building. He 

would post a list of jobs to be done, and we 

would choose from it. 

How long have you been doing this game building 

gig for? 

It's been about a year now. I am really 

enjoying it! 

I felt bad at first because I was so new to 

developing and didn't want to be paid. 

But obviously you started getting paid, as money 

began showing up in my PayPal account.

Yeah! Thanks for doing that. You will forward 

it to me, right? 

I already have. (laughing) 

You know, when I was just a bit younger than 

you, I had a paper route. Was much harder and 

still had to deliver papers in the rain. You stay 

dry and earn quite a bit more than I did. 

I'm not sure how I feel about that. 

Maybe you should have pursued game 

design... (cheeky face) 

Maybe... it was a different world back then. 

Ok, then, how is it earning your own money ? 

It feels nice to choose what I want when 

we go out. A little bit of independence! 

Aside from the bit of extra money, what else do 

you like about the game development? 

I love seeing a pen and paper sketch of 

what the plan is, and then seeing the final 

result on the screen. It is very satisfying to 

see that come to life. 

That is a good feeling. Very similar to how the 

teenLook magazine gets built! 

So, you must be like, the senior developer now, 

and possibly the youngest? 

There have been quite a few that have 

come and gone, but, yeah, I'm one of the 

originals and youngest members I think. 

This must be something that takes up quite a bit 

of your free time. How do you manage that? 

Some jobs take me 10 hours to build. I 

spend a few hours every other day. Longer 

on the weekends if I have time. Depends 

how I'm feeling. 

I have seen you working on projects. I know 

how much time is involved. That is a great quality 

to have, dedication. You start something and 

see it through to completion. 

I really enjoy it, so it really isn't hard to do 

something you enjoy. 

Do you see this as a potential career path later 

in life? 

I have a lot of fun doing this, but I think I am 

way to much of an active person to be 

sitting at a computer all day. 

Maybe part time, you never know. 

I know I am biased because I am your father. 

But I have to say, I am very proud of you! 

I love seeing this entrepreneuring side of you. 

*wipes a tear from his eye* 

Being a creative person is a wonderful trait. 

(laughing) 

I think you are taking this too seriously, dad. 

I know, but I can't help it!

an aspiring 

singer, dancer and 

actor. 

When I was little, I 

caught the performing 

bug after watching 

Hannah Montana 

on TV. I remember 

making my own 

guitar out of cardboard 

and string. 

Every night I would 

perform for my 

parents on my 

make-believe 

stage, that was 

really just the 

coffee table 

in our bonus 

room where

watch TV. 

When I was eight, I remember 

my mom taking me to a live theatre 

production of The Sound 

of Music. I cried at the end of 

the production and asked my 

mom if I could perform like that 

one day. She put me into the 

next session of musical theatre 

and dance classes and 

my dream ever since then has 

been to perform on Broadway. 

I usually spend my spare time at the 

dance studio working on all 

forms of dance and performing. 

I have performed 

in many musicals including 

Lion King (Nala), Shrek (Fiona), 

Mary Poppins (Jane) and most recently 

as my dream role Belle in Beauty 

and the Beast. I have also performed 

as a member of the musical revue 

group the Expressions which toured 

schools with an anti-bullying message. 

I am currently preparing to perform 

in my second professional musical ELF at 

the Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon. I 

learned about a performing workshop after 

meeting Heather Findlay and jumped 

a the opportunity to audition for Flair Talent 

Agency. I was a little nervous but put 

it all out there. I had a great time meeting 

new performers that had the same interest 

as me, and I have been fortunate to 

have found a supportive and encouraging 

home with them. 

In the fall, I am heading into the 10th 

Grade. I absolutely loved my first year 

of high school, and the year taught me 

many lessons. I met a lot of new friends 

who opened me up to different perspectives. 

I think it is essential to get involved 

in all the opportunities that come your 

way, even if it is something you’ve never 

done before. High school is only four years 

and the time goes by so quickly, I don’t want 

to miss being involved whenever I can. 

My advice to anyone going back to 

school or entering high school would 

be to get involved early and often. 

It makes you feel part of the “team” no 

matter what your interests are. It is important 

to make the most of the short 

time that you have in school. It is 

really up to you to make the most 

of your time. No matter what you 

do, someone will talk about 

you, so just smile and make 

the choices that make 

you happy. Although 

maybe different from your 

friends, you can be the girl that sings, 

dances, acts and has big dreams.

Giving thanks this year. 

Fall is the most beautiful 

time of year. It's one of 

my most favourite seasons. 

The colours are absolutely 

stunning. The change 

from hot Summer sun to the 

cooler weather is usually a 

welcome relief. Although this 

Summer, I believe we had 54 

days of rain, so we actually 

had some of the best weather 

in September. But, unfortunately, 

that too has to end as 

the inevitable colder weather 

that we call Winter moves in. 

Still, most of us can appreciate 

the change and be optimistic 

that Summer will return. 

Thankful for the beauty 

that surrounds us that is life. 

October 14 is Thanksgiving 

day. A day to gather with 

family and friends to celebrate 

the lives we share together. 

Giving thanks for the 

blessing, we have received. 

I encourage you to honestly 

reflect on that and think 

of even the smallest thing 

that can be easily taken for 

granted. A couple of weeks 

ago, we experienced a rare 

power outage in the evening. 

Two transformers exploded, 

leaving 20,000 people 

without power for two hours. 

What a great way to instantly 

appreciate the things we 

take for granted! My girls and 

I sat around the kitchen table 

with a few cell phone lights 

to illuminate the darkness. 

We laughed and giggled at 

the unannounced change. 

Then we talked. We had 

conversations. We played 

board games, anxious that 

the power of the cell phones 

would not fade before we 

could finish, leaving us in the 

darkness again. The girls 

went to bed early as there 

were no distractions to keep 

them awake. 

We should have power outages 

more often. 

I like to remember one of the 

most life-changing experiences 

of my life when I start 

to forget how fortunate we 

really are... 

When I was 19, I left home 

and flew halfway around 

the world to the continent 

of Africa. I was on my own, 

travelling for the first time. 

I was scared. I remember 

wandering a crowded street 

in Zambia, waiting for my ride 

to take me to Lubumbashi, 

Zaire. The year was 1990, 

but what I saw was like I had 

been transported to 1950. It 

was a surreal time in my life. 

Believe me; all eyes were on 

me. 

I spent three months in Zaire, 

now known as the Democratic 

Republic of the Congo. The 

country was just starting to 

go through a considerable 

change as unrest and political 

corruption caused it's 

collapse shortly after. 

I spent time with some of 

the poorest families. Seeing 

children make incredible 

toys from scraps they found. 

They were the happiest kids 

I ever met! I used to visit with 

the families that had invited 

me to have dinner with 

them. They literally only had 

the necessities to live, yet 

shared everything with me. I 

was so humbled to see how 

life could be so hard, yet the 

people were so giving and 

happy. 

Living with no electricity or 

running water. Yeah, that's as 

real as it can get for a teenager 

like me coming from a 

country like Canada. I was 

really in shock. 

To connect with the people, I 

learned Swahili. I learned that 

when I went to the local lumberyard, 

the bundle marked 

"Mzungu" was meant for me. 

I learned that while operating 

a dump truck loaded 

with rock and sand that had 

no brakes (because the fluid 

lines would bleed out) forcing 

me to grip the brake pedal 

with my toes to pull it up from 

the cab floor (when I realized 

I had not kept the brakes 

pressurized) and I needed to 

stop suddenly, was a terrifying 

experience! 

I learned not to wear shoes 

while driving. 

All new and wonderful experiences. 

Experiences that made me 

appreciate the things in my 

life back home that I didn't 

even realize I had been taking 

for granted as an expected 

part of living.

I remember fondly, the day 

my mom picked me up from 

the airport, I asked to drive. 

I think I jumped a couple of 

curbs, only from new defensive 

driving habits formed 

while abroad. It took a little 

while to readjust to driving on 

roadways and staying within 

the lines. Too funny! 

Even now, almost thirty years 

later, I hold the experience 

close. The friendships I made 

were unfortunately short, but 

the memories of them all are 

still close in my heart. I think 

of the kids and where they 

must be now. I left just before 

all the foreign residents were 

forced to evacuate due to the 

unrest. It breaks my heart still 

to know how much trouble 

and pain there must have 

been through that time. 

If you ever get a chance to 

travel to an impoverished 

country, make it a priority. 

Stay safe while you do it, but 

also learn how valuable life 

really is. Know what it means 

to be without. Understanding 

how much we take for granted. 

This Thanksgiving, I give 

thanks for my life and my 

family. 

I give thanks to God for my 

blessings and his love. 

I also remember how life can 

be for others and how much 

we take for granted and never 

to forget that. 

I want to leave you all with 

these beautiful words from 

God to us. 

Matthew 6:25-34 


25 - "Therefore I tell you, do 

not worry about your life, 

what you will eat or drink; or 

about your body, what you 

will wear. Is not life more than 

food, and the body more than 

clothes? 26 - Look at the 

birds of the air; they do not 

sow or reap or store away in

not much more valuable than

on country music. Bailey’s year 

began with an unusual trip across the 

country to participate in the infamous 

Hollywood Week of American Idol 

season 17. Earning the Golden Ticket 

was a valuable experience that allowed 

Bailey to showcase her talents and 

spread her I Won’t Be Silent message 

to the masses in collaboration with The 

Jason Foundation. Most recently, this 

PA native wrapped a full-fledged radio 

tour in support of her latest release 

to radio, Devil Won’t Take Me Down 

— currently #41 on the MusicRow 

Charts. 

With her radio hit Devil Won’t 

Take Me Down,” climbing the charts, 

she has also released The One. On 

what would have been his 21st 

birthday, Bailey James is dedicating 

this release to her older brother. Since 

losing him in 2017, Bailey 

and her family have openly 

shared their story in an 

effort to raise awareness 

of teen suicide. Today, 

teenagers and younger 

kids are no stranger to 

suicide. Recognizing this,

Bailey James is working hard to 

bring attention to suicide awareness 

and prevention. It’s been a busy month 

thus far as Bailey has been out promoting 

the release of her latest single 

The One which highlights this cause 

close to her heart. 

She raised awareness and money 

for suicide prevention with an exclusive 

Facebook Live concert at 'The 

615 Hideaway' September 18'th. It 

was a 40-minute acoustic performance 

where she also shared her own 

personal experience of losing a loved 

one in an effort to open up a conversation 

about this silent epidemic. 

“I’ve known Bailey for quite some 

time and when I heard her story and 

what she was wanting to do for this 

event, I jumped on this opportunity,” 

says Sammy Passamano III, Founder of 

'The 615 Hideaway'. “We can’t think of 

a better artist to bring such an emotional 

topic to the table and connect

Bailey was also a part of the 

'Dickson County Suicide Prevention 

Awareness Race' recently on September

Beauty is everywhere. You just have to bee open to seeing it.

I have always 

had a love for 

photography as 

far back as I can 

remember. 

My grandfather always 

had all the top gear and 

enjoyed photographing 

nature. He taught me to see 

the beauty in the smallest of 

things, including his honey 

bees and how they flew in an 

out of the hive meticulously 

creating honeycombs 

that looked like art. They 

were busy and focused 

and continued as we 

watched on. 

I always had a camera in 

my hand but never had the 

confidence to put myself 

or my work out there. It 

wasn’t until about 2000 

that I started posting my 

work in various 

photo 

groups 

and started selling nature and 

landscape stock photos. 

My confidence in my work 

started to develop when I 

realized clients were actually 

buying them, and I began to 

take 

my photography more 

seriously. 

I took some courses at 

Grant MacEwan and started 

to read and 

practice as much as a could. 

My niece started modelling 

around that time, and I 

practiced a lot with her and 

found that I had a passion for 

photographing people. 

I was fortunate to find 

really great mentors and 

started second shooting for 

weddings and family sessions. 

In 2012 I started my 

photography as a business 

and photographed weddings, 

newborns and family sessions 

and started doing beauty 

shoots one on one with 

models. This is where I found 

my true passion. Beauty 

and creative 

photoshoots 

became my 

main focus and 

creative outlet, 

which really helped me 

grow on a personal level.

In 2018 my niece and I started 

teaching model development 

courses. Through it, my main focus 

is on helping others gain confidence, 

navigate the modelling industry 

and mentoring students who are 

interested in pursuing photography 

and modelling. 

Most of the photography that I 

do now is centred on our students 

and giving them a safe starting 

place to practice for future shoots. 

This has brought me great joy 

watching them develop and become 

successful and happy. There is 

nothing more gratifying knowing 

you may have had a small part in 

helping someone find their way! Their 

success is actually my 

success. 

Confidence is gained over time from 

your life experiences and personal 

connections with others and yourself. 

It took me a lot of years to get to 

where I am now and a lot of that I 

owe to my clients, family and friends. 

I have realized 

that like the honey 

bees, by working 

together, staying 

busy and focused on your goals 

and not so much on who is watching; 

eventually, you will create something 

meaningful and beautiful. 

For me, photography is more than 

just a pile of images. It’s about the 

experience, connecting and capturing 

the inner light that shines in all of us!

Scarlett is a

is Mexican, and her

I recently just returned 

from a three-week road 

trip around the United 

States, west coast and east coast. 

During this time, I was lucky to 

spend my thirteenth birthday 

in New York City. 

My Mum, my best 

friend and her Mum surprised 

me with an afternoon tea at 

the Tiffany's Blue Box Cafe! It was 

a very Audrey Hepburn moment. 

Modelling has also been something 

she has always been interested 

in but felt like it was 

the right time to pursue it at 12. 

Art is also something she loves to 

do. Creating something uniquely 

original from just a piece of paper, 

using a pencil and imagination 

brings her great happiness.

My name is Dayton 

Paradis! 

I am 14 years old, and 

my passion is dance. 

I took part in the typical 

young male sports, but nothing 

ever fit until my parents 

registered me in a weekly 

Hip Hop class. 

I have grown up dancing and 

making friends at my studio but 

never realized how great 

it truly made me feel. 

These days dance occupies 

most of my life, 

and I am lucky enough to 

get the love and support of my 

friends and family in return. 

I have recently signed with Flair 

Talent Agency, a talent agency full 

of dancers, actors, singers and 

models who help kids like me reach 

their fullest potential. 

Flair gives me confidence 

and allows me to have a larger 

platform to share what I love. 

A tip for other teens like me is to 

constantly surround yourself with 

positive people who lift you up 

and avoid the ones who knock you 

down.

Meet Jaida; she is 16 years old and was 

born in Calgary where she lives with 

her parents and younger twin brothers. 

Currently she is in Milan, Italy, where 

she shares her experience of being discovered 

and working as an international 

model. 

When I was younger, I was always made 

fun of for the way I dressed and did 

my hair, but because I was always so tall, my 

mom's friends always told me to try modelling. 

I was more interested in acting, though. 

I really loved theatre both on and off stage, 

and I did that for seven years before thinking 

about modelling. 

When I first walked into the Patti Falconer 

Agency almost a year ago, I really didn't 

expect anything more than a couple of photoshoots 

and maybe some local modelling. 

Ben, my agent, wanted me to go to an event 

in Vancouver called Faces West. My mom 

and I didn't really like the idea of international 

modelling, so we didn't think too much 

about attending this event. The more Ben

told us about Faces, the more intriguing 

the idea became. It was 

a chance to put yourself in front 

of 30 scouts from all across the 

world. 

You had the opportunity to model, 

act, and present yourself in 

front of a big audience. By the 

time we made the decision to go 

there, it was only three weeks until 

the event, and I didn't have a 

single clue what I was doing.

I attended three of the walking 

classes before I left and

I still had to come up with 

a monologue and commercial. Let's 

just say it was a very hectic three weeks. 

Finally, we got to Vancouver and the event 

started. We got to do a monologue, commercial, 

group runway, formal catwalk, and a 

sports wear catwalk. I still didn't know what 

I wanted out of modelling so I just tried to 

put the most of myself out there as I could 

and have fun. The last day was the day where 

you got to meet the scouts, and they can decide 

if they like you or not. I got 21 of the 30 

callbacks which I thought was crazy because 

I didn't know how to catwalk and I only had 

two photos in my book. I managed to do all 

my callbacks and fly 

home that evening. I 

felt like Cinderella going 

from a magical weekend 

and coming back home 

to school and living my 

normal life. About a 

week later, Ben called 

my mom and said we 

need to come into the 

agency today. My mom 

pulled me out of school, 

and we went to the agency. 

I had a contract offer 

from Fmi Model to go 

to Guangzhou for three 

months. My mom and I 

didn't even think about

nity was just too amazing to pass up. 

We had about five months to prepare. In those 

five months, I got to walk New York Fashion 

week for three designers as well as Vancouver 

fashion week for 12 designers. I spent those 

five months trying to get as many shoots in 

my book as I could and changed from public 

school to online school. I had to give up 

Dance, which I had been doing for seven 

years and recently started to do competitively, 

for modelling. That was a very emotional decision. 

Finally, we were down to the two-week 

mark and all of a sudden Fmi switched our 

trip from Guangzhou to Taipei, so we booked 

our flights and Apartment and then we were 

off. I started going to castings right away. It 

took a good week and a half before I booked 

my first commercial for Kymco Taiwan. I got 

to ride a pink scooter in high heels! I was having 

a fantastic time, and everyone in Taipei 

was so nice. After the first month, I started 

booking lots of jobs. I booked 39 Christian 

Dior backstage runway shows and the entire 

Autumn/Winter 2019 Catalog for iLady 

Taiwan. Since I had a busy next two months, 

my mom decided Taipei was safe and that she 

would go home to my twin brothers and my 

dad. I moved into the model apartment with 

all my new friends from around the world. 

The last two months I was working 

all over the place. I went to a 

couple of other cities to do Dior 

shows, and I booked a sportswear 

brand called Macaca. It was hard 

not having my mom there because 

we had never really been apart, 

but I was very busy with castings 

and jobs, so it was easy to take my 

mind off of how much I missed 

her. The months flew by, and I 

was only in Taipei for two more 

weeks. On my last day of castings, 

I had one for Fila, which I actually 

didn't know at the time. I got my 

casting pictures taken and went off 

to the side to talk to my friends afterwards. 

My friend and I started 

to goof around and have flexibility 

competitions. The casting director saw me 

and asked if I could do some of that on camera, 

so I did, and the next week my booker 

told me I booked the Fila job! The shoot ended 

up being the same day I left to go home, 

so I had to go straight from my photoshoot 

to the airport and then take a 15-hour flight 

home. Once I got 

home, I prepared 

for my second 

International trip 

which was for a 

contract me and 

my best friend

back in January 

to go with 

Olympia models 

to Milan Italy. 

It was hard to 

spend time with 

all my family 

and friends plus 

do online school 

and get ready for 

my next trip all 

in the one month 

I had back home. 

I managed to do 

all that and get 

a couple of photoshoots 

done. I 

was also offered

the opportunity to walk for Faun in Paris 

fashion week, which was such a blessing. So 

now I am in Milan going to lots of castings for 

designers I would have never thought would 

even look at me and experiencing the most 

amazing opportunities here with my best 

friend and my dad that I'm so grateful to have 

here with me. Every journey is different, and 

I am beyond thankful to have the opportunities 

that are presented to me. Remember that 

every no is just a step closer to that one big 

yes, just be confident and be yourself because 

personality is what'll get you places in this industry. 

Don't let anything get you down; let it 

make you stronger instead.

Though I only got to work with Grant twice, he was one of the 

people who helped launch my career, and I am so grateful for 

the moments I did get to spend with him and the things I learned 

from him. He taught me how to show the camera personality 

and how the camera only shows you what you feel. He left to 

soon, but I’m so glad I got to work with him. I can say for sure he 

was my favourite photographer and I miss him dearly.

Rosanna is a 

14 year-old 

aspiring model, 

who has an unmeasurable 

passion for the art. 

I have loved modelling 

from a very young age. I 

participated in a fashion show 

(Blossoms of Love) at the age 

of 7, which was a fundraiser 

for charity. In February 

2019, I signed with 

Chan International (mother 

agency). I took one of their tenweek 

classes for modelling and acting. 

In March 2019 I auditioned 

for Charles Stuart 

who was scouting 

for people for Faces 

West Vancouver. I made 

it in the top 20, and now I will 

be attending the Faces West 

convention in November 2019, 

which is one of the most prestigious 

mode conventions in Canada. 

In June 2019, I applied to attend 

the Coco Rocha Model Camp in 

Calgary, and I actually got accepted! 

This camp truly opened the doors 

for me as I learned so much about 

the industry and modelling itself, 

from top model Coco Rocha, 

which was an amazing experience. 

I had a very high fashion shoot at 

the camp, and I also participated in the 

Hudson’s Bay Fashion Show Runway. 

Now I am preparing myself for 

Faces West, and also trying to 

promote myself in this industry :) 

I am also a competitive gymnast who 

trains 20 hours a week, 

which keeps me very fit, 

and I enjoy it so much!

Kiana Jewel has 

lived her whole 

life in the Australian 

beachside 

tourist town of Byron 

Bay. Growing up in 

such a beautiful beachside 

location, she naturally has a 

strong affiliation with the ocean 

and regularly enjoys surfing with family 

and friends. 

Kiana developed a love of acting 

early in life, and this love sparked her 

interest and curiosity in the world of 

modelling. Encouraged by a family 

friend to explore her modelling potential, 

when an opportunity arose, she 

took it. In May last year, Kiana attended 

a Country Girl Management (CGM) 

event, a model search competition 

that doubles in confidence-building 

and body positivity. 

She went along curious to see 

if she enjoyed modelling and if she 

wished to pursue this later in life. It 

turned out to be a wonderful 

introduction as the CGM team 

are so supportive and nurturing of 

all the young women who attend. 

Two significant things happened at 

this event. The first one was that Kiana 

discovered that she absolutely 

loved everything about the experience 

- the photoshoot, the catwalk, learning 

about the industry and meeting 

amazing girls and women. The second, 

which came as a major surprise, was 

that she won the junior model search 

for that event. 

She was invited to attend the 

CGM National final event, returning 

six months later and ended up winning 

the Junior section of the CGM Australian 

Model search. She is now represented 

by Country Girl Management 

and is featured on their website as one 

of the CGM “2018 Faces”. Kiana now 

has a contract with the highly respected 

modelling agency, CHIC Brisbane. 

Kiana is determined to pursue a professional 

career in acting and modelling. 

She aspires to be signed by agents 

in all states of Australia and also internationally. 

She is supported by CGM to develop 

her career and to attain this 

goal. Kiana cannot wait until she 

turns 16 when she 

can start to attend 

castings for adult 

work.
