The first Wanstead Park litter pick of 2022
took place last month. “Luckily, the weather
was lovely on Sunday 9 January, unlike the
downpour the day before. We had 23 litter
pickers, including quite a few children. We also
sold a couple of craft items and several books
and notelets and made £27.50. It was great to
chat to so many interested people,” said Gill
James of the Friends of Wanstead Parklands.
The event will continue to take place on the
second Sunday of every month (volunteers are
invited to meet outside the Temple at 11am).
The Friends of Wanstead Parklands has created
a YouTube channel to present the recordings
of a new series of online talks about the
park’s history. The Wanstead Park in Context
presentations began in January and continue
this month with an event on 24 February.
“The next talk will cover the formation of the
post-glacial landscape in the Roding Valley
and successive waves of human settlement,”
said Richard Arnopp. The talks are held on
Zoom, with opportunities for questions and
discussion. Visit wnstd.com/wpic
A new orchard has been planted on
Wanstead Park Recreation Ground, an area
of open space situated alongside the River
Roding, just outside the southeast corner
of Wanstead Park. “As well as enhancing the
ecological value of the site, it’s hoped this new
community orchard will increase exploration
of this underused green space. We also plan to
relax the mowing regime in the grassland area
surrounding the orchard, which will boost
biodiversity,” said Anna MacLaughlin, a nature
conservation ranger for Vision RCL.
