Portrait of our High Street: photographer
documents local shops and shopkeepers
Documentary
photographer Russell
Boyce has produced
a series of portraits
of Wanstead’s
shopkeepers. “The
pictures are a historic
visual document
about the Wanstead
community, for
the community,”
said Russell, who
photographed each
shop twice, once with
all the staff outside and
again with the owner inside. The shopkeepers
were also interviewed about their thoughts
on the future of the High Street. The portraits
and shopkeeper quotes will be displayed
outside the Temple in Wanstead Park in March
(sponsored by The Stow Brothers), and will
at the pictures and read the quotes.”
Phone mast
refused
An application
to install an 18m
phone mast within
the grounds of the
Esso petrol station
in Aldersbrook has
been refused. It
follows a similar
application for a
20m mast that was
rejected last summer.
Over 60 objections
were lodged by local
residents, citing the
adverse impact it
would have on the
character of the area.
“We have successfully
fended this off twice
now, so hopefully
that will be the end
of the matter,” said an
Aldersbrook resident.
HMO licensing
consultation
Redbridge Council
has launched a
consultation on its
proposals to renew
the Additional
Houses in Multiple
Occupation licensing
scheme. “From its
introduction in 2017,
property licensing
has had a significant
impact on improving
standards in the
private rented sector
and continues to
support a range of
housing objectives,”
said a spokesperson.
The consultation
is open to all
residents and runs
until 7 March. Visit
