10G Tuneable Transponder
The ability to tune a Transponder into any wavelength channel is an important factor to address spare part management
and cost for optical networks. Networks with fixed optics will require at least one extra Transponder unit for every used
wavelength channel as a spare part. A Transponder with tuneable laser can be used as a spare part for all wavelength
channels and will reduce the cost for spare parts dramatically.
The Transmode TP10GCLX/TC Transponder has equal functionality and performance as the existing TP10GCLX/zzzzz unit
that has a fixed line interface. This is indicated via the product code that is identical apart from the suffix "TC" that
stands for "Tuneable C-band". The TP10GCLX/TC Transponder can thus be used as a spare part for any
TP10GCLX/zzzzz unit. When inserted into a slot previously used by a TP10GCLX/zzzzz unit, the Transponder will
automatically inherit all the previous configuration data and automatically tune into the correct wavelength channel.
A new level of optical networking can also be achieved when combining the TP10GCLX/TC Transponder with the
Transmode ROADM. Since both units are tuneable it is therefore possible to remotely create a dynamic add/drop node
for any wavelength channel.
The TP10GCLX/TC Transponder supports 10GbE-WAN/STM-64/OC-192 and 10GbE LAN traffic formats with the
following functions and features:
- Client signal is mapped into a G.709 digital wrapper.
10GbE WAN
10GbE LAN
STM-64/OC-192
- Embedded management channels enables easy access to remote NE’s without need for local DCN access or
separate OSC channel.
- Boosted transmission distance via line coding (FEC) that detects and corrects bit errors (Forward Error
Correction).
- XFP Transceiver on client interface to enable different interfacing alternatives towards client equipment.
- Tuneable line interface covering the whole C-band ITU grid at 50GHz and 100GHz spacing.
- PM extraction on both client and line interface every 15min/24h that is presented according to G.826 in the
node and network manager.
- Near-end client and far-end line loop-back for fault-finding and to ease installation and commissioning.
The TM-series 10G Transponder can be combined with other DWDM units on a fibre-pair with optical Mux/DeMux’es
(MDU’s). This is the optimum configuration for point-to-point networks where optical amplifiers, intermediate line
amplifiers and Dispersion Compensation Units (DCU’s) are used to extend the distance.
Up to 80 DWDM channels are currently supported for distances up to 600km in point-to-point or bus/ring network
configurations.
Two TP10G units can be connected to provide equipment protection.
A passive optical coupler/combiner is placed between the Transponders and the
client equipment as shown in the figure.
One Transponder is set to “active” and the other in “stand-by” mode. Only the
active Transponder has its client laser turned on. Upon a failure on the active
path, the active Transponder will turn off its client laser and a HW-connected
signal will activate the stand-by Transponder. This switch is done within 20ms.
