JEFF JOINS RANGERS ON HIS BIRTHDAY
MIDFIELDER Jeff Hendrick
marked his 30th birthday
by joining QPR on loan from
Newcastle for the remainder of
the season.
The experienced Republic
of Ireland international was
Rangers’ final signing of the
January transfer window and
made his debut as a second-half
substitute in Saturday’s FA Cup
tie at Peterborough.
“It’s been a bit of a crazy
birthday, just waiting for this to
happen, but I am really excited,”
said Hendrick.
“I wanted to get out, get games
and enjoy my football. I wasn’t
just going to sit around.
“I have played against the
manager’s teams throughout
the league and they always play
good football. John Eustace is
there who I played with, and I
know certain players like Jimmy
Dunne and Andre Gray.
“I just thought this would be the
right fit for me. Hopefully, I can
come in and help give that last
push to get promoted.”
Hendrick, who began his career
at Derby and featured in their
Championship play-off final
defeat to QPR in 2014, also helped
Burnley to finish seventh in the
Premier League four years later.
He moved to Newcastle 18
months ago, but has only
featured four times for the
Magpies this season.
Meanwhile, defenders Jordy
de Wijs and Conor Masterson
departed W12 on loan deals
before the transfer deadline.
De Wijs, who has just returned
from injury, will spend the rest
of the campaign with secondtier
German club Fortuna
Dusseldorf, with Masterson
joining team-mate Charlie
Kelman at Gillingham until the
end of the season.

goalkeeper Seny Dieng, who
achieved his aim of winning an
Africa Cup of Nations medal
after Senegal triumphed in
Sunday’s final against Egypt.
Dieng kept clean sheets in
Senegal’s first two games of the
tournament, against Zimbabwe
and Guinea, before making way
for first choice keeper Edouard
Mendy.
He was on the bench as the
Lions of Teranga won the
tournament for the first time in
their history, beating Egypt 4-2
in a penalty shoot-out following
a 0-0 draw.
