CHRIS Wilder’s star
rose rapidly during his
five-year spell in charge
of hometown club
Sheffield United, when
he guided the Blades
from League One
obscurity to a mid-table
Premier League finish.
Wilder’s achievement
echoed his playing
career at Bramall Lane
– he was a right-back in
the Blades squads that
rose from the third tier
to the top level in quick
succession and returned
for a second stint after
playing for Rotherham,
Notts County and
Bradford.
He hung up his boots
after two years at
Halifax and managed
Alfreton Town for a
season before rejoining
the Shaymen as their
boss in 2002.
Wilder remained in
charge for six years, but
Halifax’s liquidation
forced him to continue
his management career
elsewhere and he joined
Oxford, steering the U’s
back into the EFL in his
second season.
He moved to
Northampton in 2014,
hauling them out of the
League Two relegation
zone and then
overseeing a title
success 12 months later
before the Blades came
calling in May 2016.
