Eco Tourism
keeps the Blue Mountains beautiful
Surrounded by World Heritage Listed wilderness, the Blue Mountains is a natural
wonder right on Sydney’s doorstep. It is one of only two destinations in the world
surrounded by a UNESCO-declared World Heritage National Park. We want you to
enjoy our beautiful home now, and for it to be enjoyed by generations to come.
Here are some tips for travelling sustainably in the Blue Mountains:
1. Preserve our World Heritage Listed Area: Take only memories and photos
and leave only footprints. Enjoy the natural beauty on offer, however never
stray from the path when bushwalking or taking in the views at our lookouts.
2. Help reduce waste: Bring your own reusable cup and refillable water
bottle when visiting the Blue Mountains. Better yet, pick up a reusable cup
or water bottle from one of our local shops as a memento of your visit.
3. Shop, play, dine and stay local: During your stay support Blue Mountains
local businesses where you can. The Blue Mountains offers an array of shopping,
dining, accommodation, and tourism experiences suitable for everyone.
4. Use the Green Travel Guide: Use the Green Travel Guide to find tourism operators
and destinations certified by Ecotourism Australia as a high quality eco experience.
Remember that small acts can make a huge difference towards
the sustainability of our Blue Mountains.
BUSHWALKING
• Plan your walk: know the level of
difficulty, weather forecasts and
and NPWS park alerts.
• Tell somebody: let someone know
where you are going, when you expect
to return and who is with you. Submit
a trip intention form on the NPWS
website.
• Stay on track: walking tracks in
the Blue Mountains are not always
signposted so take care.
• Dress appropriately: waterproof and
windproof clothing, comfortable and
protective shoes, lightweight layers
and sun protection.
• Pack the right gear: water, food, bags
for rubbish, a topographic map and
compass and a first aid kit. If you are
really heading bush, pick up a personal
locator beacon (PLB) from Springwood
or Katoomba Police Station, or the Blue
Mountains Heritage Centre Blackheath.
• Do not rely on mobile phone
coverage: Reception may not be
available, batteries die, phones can
be lost or damaged.
• Download the Fires Near Me mobile app
• Call the NSW RFS bushfire information
Bushfire danger ratings are issued during
the bushfire danger period. The higher
the fire danger, the more dangerous the
conditions. Summer storms in the Blue
Mountains can cause flash flooding.
