Head Coach
Mark Bonner
Firstly, I’d like to welcome John Coleman, his staff and players to
The Abbey for today’s Sky Bet League One tie against Accrington Stanley.
Last weekend’s hard earnt point at Burton
was an important one, albeit both teams
probably felt frustrated not to have taken
all three, whilst relieved to have at least
taken something at the same time.
After a difficult start we found our way
into the game and came back from behind
twice against a notoriously tough team to
do so against.
We might have won the game late on. With
good attacking periods of play and some
wonderful counter attacks, had we found the
final action with more joy, we may have been
celebrating the win.
The challenge of recent away games
has been obvious and taking a point at
Fleetwood and Burton shouldn’t be sniffed
at. We take it, knowing there is more in us
and on another day may have returned home
better off. The late defeat at Gillingham
angers us as a point would have been ok.
Having played seven away games in six
weeks and 12 matches in 40 days, our
schedule has been brutal. We are currently
on 19 Tuesday fixtures for the season and
heading towards 60 competitive games come
the end of the season. The players are doing
great and are always wanting to do better.
We hope that our first midweek break of
2022 has helped us to refresh ourselves
going into a busy fortnight starting today
against an Accrington Stanley side, who are
again having a good season and had an
excellent result against Crewe last weekend.
At the time of writing, I am preparing
to head up to Sheffield to watch them face
Sheffield Wednesday. This gives us a
chance to see them live which I always prefer
if the schedule allows. We will then prepare
the players on Thursday the best we can
for the game.
We won’t be alone in struggling for
space on the grass to train this week.
Tuesday was waterlogged and the forecast
for the remainder of the week looks crazy.
Perhaps today could be the first weekend
where we see games fall foul to the storms
and conditions. Either way, we expect
some challenging conditions today and as
pitches keep deteriorating, it is no surprise
to have seen a number of recent games
looking as they have. It’s that time of year.
A simple question always challenges us, ‘do
we fancy it?’.
The support we have had over the past six
weeks has been outstanding. For all who
have travelled with us and supported us
through a tough period, thank you. We have
always said that our progress as a team and
club will be determined by the support,
atmosphere and togetherness across the
whole club. We are building something
and that will have huge highs, dips and
challenges throughout, but as we do it,
there will be many good moments we can
share together.
Enjoy the game.
Chief Executive Officer
ian mather
Welcome to all who have made the trip down from Lancashire.
I hope we can provide as warm a welcome as you gave us
when we visited the Wham Stadium in August.
Today is dedicated to families and the Mead
Plant & Grab stand will be host to many young
people. It is a great opportunity for the next
generation of football fans to experience the
thrill of a live game. At the Abbey we take pride
in how we welcome all to enjoy a match in a safe
and fun environment. It is with some sadness
however that we can detect an element of those
attending games, both here and across the
country, that are causing damage to the game.
My early football life was in Manchester in the late
60’s/early 70’s. Old Trafford one week, Maine Road
the next. As well as great football I saw a really dark
side of the game. Aggression and violence beyond
the scale of anything being seen now. We do not
want to go back there.
Since Covid lockdowns have ended and fans
have returned there has been a steep rise in bad
behaviour around football. Bolton have issued bans
to several people (they are not fans or supporters).
At the Rotherham v Accrington game on 5 February
someone ran onto the pitch and disrupted an
Accrington penalty kick on the 89th minute.
The retaken kick was missed – possibly costing
them a point.
There have been incidents involving Leicester,
Nottingham, Grimsby and in many other places.
The police have issued statistics which support the
anecdotes: Incidents up 36% on the first half of
the season (compared with when fans were last in
stadiums). Arrests are up 38%.
Over 99% of our fans behave impeccably however,
we have had incidents of racist and sexist abuse.
We have issued bans for bottle throwing and
possession of flares.
This behaviour has consequences: As a club
we have one of the lowest policing costs in the
country. Other clubs are spending over six figure
sums. Would you rather we spend money on police
or players? More importantly, abusive behaviour
corrodes the fun.
As I have said here before there is a line between
banter and abuse. We don’t want this to be a library
but the line is being crossed.
What’s causing this and what can we do about it?
There seems to be a couple of main causes:
• Some young fans who are attending games for
the first time post pandemic who have not picked
up on how to behave reasonably in a crowd.
• Drug misuse.
What can be done? This is a whole Club problem.
It is a small minority who cause the difficulty.
Bad behaviour needs to be called out by those
around the trouble makers. Fans are encouraged to
report incidents to stewards. These reports will be
taken seriously. We are also taking steps to monitor
the situation.
We have a zero tolerance towards drug misuse,
racist, sexist and homophobic behaviour. We
really don’t want to ban people – we want them to
change their behaviour but in the final analysis we
will eject and ban those who cause trouble.
Enjoy the game.
Today’s Opposition
accrington stanley
FOUNDED: 1968 | NICKNAME: STANLEY/ACCY | STADIUM: WHAM STADIUM | LAST SEASON: 11TH
Stanley arrive at the
Abbey Stadium this
afternoon having made
the 200-mile trip down
the country in hope of
maintaining their two
game winning run – after
previously going six
games without one prior
to their 2-0 win over
Oxford United a week and
a half ago.
Having seen off Oxford United
before comfortably beating
relegation threatened Crewe
Alexandra at the Wham Stadium
last weekend, John Coleman’s
men will be aiming to replicate
the same early season form that
saw Accy sit in the League One
play-offs after four games – after
winning three in three following
an opening day defeat at
Wycombe.
John O’Sullivan was on hand to
score his first of the season and
the opener in Accrington’s win
over Oxford a week and a half
ago – firing in from the edge of
the area – before Ethan Hamilton
wrapped up the three points
and Accy’s first win of 2022 in
additional time, while in turn
condemning Karl Robinson’s
side to their first defeat in four
matches.
John Coleman’s men stand in
good stead to improve on their
11th placed finish last season after
comfortably seeing off Crewe
Alex in their last outing. Ross
Sykes’ brace either side of the
half-time whistle, coupled with
goals from Tommy Leigh and Sean
McConville saw Accy move up to
12th; sitting just five points shy of
9th placed Ipswich Town.
August’s reverse clash at the
Wham Stadium, the clubs’ first
meeting in three years, saw Accy
pick up their first League One win
of the campaign after racing in to
a 2-0 goal lead after half an hour.
Despite a much improved second
half from Mark Bonner’s men,
which saw striker Joe Ironside half
the deficit with ten minutes to
play, United were unable to muster
up a comeback.
Fans may remember Mark Angel,
Darren Quinton and Darren
Bridges all scoring in a dominant
Cambridge United opening 45
back in 2005, when United ran out
3-1 winners over an Accrington
side that would go onto the be
crowned Conference National
champions later that season.
That win in August 2005 proved to
be one of only two wins for the U’s
over Saturday’s visitors since the
turn of the century, with United’s
only other win coming in an
action packed clash at the Abbey
Stadium in 2016, whereby two red
cards and two Will Norris penalty
saves in additional time saw Shaun
Derry’s U’s hold on for a 2-1 win in
League Two.
The Gaffer
John Coleman
D.O.B: 12.10.1962
Place of Birth: Kirkby,
England
Despite admitting he’s
“rapidly falling out of love
with football” following
Accy’s FA Cup exit to Derby
County in 2019, which we
suspect was somewhat said
in the heat of the moment,
the Merseyside born
manager continues to defy
all odds with his Accrington
Stanley team. Now incredibly
in his 21st season in charge
at the Wham Stadium across
two spells, the former
Rochdale manager looks to
be leading the Lancashire
club to their fourth
successive mid table finish in
the third tier following their
promotion from League Two
in 2018 – despite having
one of League One’s lowest
wage bills.
Safe Hands
Toby Savin
Age: 20
Nationality: English
Having failed to find a home within
the academies of Southport, Wigan,
Everton and Crewe, Toby Savin finally
settled in Accrington before breaking
through into John Coleman’s side,
aged just 19, last season – making
35 appearances in all competitions
before displacing Manchester City
loanee James Trafford in the net at the
Wham Stadium in September. Despite
being at the tender age of just 20, the
stopper has become a key man within
Coleman’s side, establishing himself
as Accy’s number one; only conceding
31 goals in 27 games this campaign,
keeping 9 clean sheets in the process.
The keeper’s performances this season
has seen the Southport born man
linked with a move to Tottenham
Hotspur as recently as last month.
The Rock
Michael Nottingham
Age: 20
Nationality: St Kitts and Nevis
The 32-year-old has established
himself at the heart of Stanley’s
defence since arriving from
Blackpool last season, featuring
in every minute of Accrington’s
League One games this season.
The defender not only boasts
a wealth of playing experience
having spent much of his career in
the third and fourth divisions – but
also international experience, after
representing St. Kitts and Nevis on
two occasions in 2017. Not only
has the former Salford man been
an unmoveable presence at the
heart of Accy’s defence, but the
6’3” centre half has also been a
threat from set plays this campaign,
scoring four goals in League One
– and most recently in Stanley’s 2-2
draw with Morecambe in January.
The Creator
Sean McConville
Age: 32
Nationality: English
The left winger has once been
the star of the show in John
Coleman’s side, with the former
Chester man currently leading
the current League One assists
charts with 12 assists and most
recently assisting three of the
four goals that Accrington
Stanley scored in their win over
Crewe Alexandra on Saturday.
The creator was at the heart of
everything Stnley did right in
August when the two sides met
at the Wham Stadium, assisting
both Matt Butcher and Harry
Pell’s goal as John Coleman’s
side ran out 2-1 winners over
the U’s – picking up their
first win of the season in the
process.
The Hitman
Colby Bishop
Age: 25
Nationality: English
A considerable amount of
pressure has been placed
on the shoulders of Bishop
following the departure of
Dion Charles, who made
the 26 mile switch down
the M66 to Bolton at the
start of the January transfer
window. With eight goals
and three assists so far this
season, early signs suggest
that the former Boston
United forward can handle
the workload up front on
his own. The 25-year-old
most recently scored in
Stanley’s 2-2 draw with
Morecambe at the end of
January.
FROM THE SLO
with Dave Matthew-Jones
THIS AFTERNOON WE WELCOME THE SUPPORTERS,
OFFICIALS AND PLAYING STAFF OF ACCRINGTON STANLEY
TO THE ABBEY STADIUM.
In the late 1960’s I was
given a book which
showed a turnstile that
had been left derelict. It
was from Accrington’s
original ground. The
photograph has always
remained in my mind and
is a constant reminder to
me of how important it
is that everyone works
together to ensure their
clubs not only survive,
but also flourish.
The work and dedication
of those involved ensured
Accrington were able to reform
and then rise back through the
leagues. It can only be admired.
Accrington are proof of what
can be achieved when everyone
works together as one.
In addition to Accrington
supporters, we also welcome
Pippa Luo Sawyer. She is 6 years
old and today will be her first visit
to the Abbey Stadium. Families
and children are a really important
part of Matchday experience at
the Abbey Stadium. They are the
future of the club. All supporters
need to ensure that when visiting
the ground, the atmosphere
remains positive and at the end
of the day, those families and
individuals coming for the first time
will leave wanting to come back
again. We need them to tell their
friends and family that Cambridge
United is a football club that they
can be proud to visit and one that
welcomes everyone to it.
Following on from that, Cambridge
United has a zero tolerance of
discrimination. Recently, there have
been several incidents reported
and it really important we eliminate
them together. It is everyone’s
responsibility to do whatever they
can to achieve that. If you witness
an incident, please report it to a
steward or by calling/texting our
Matchday Hotline on 075224
73291.
Away travel for upcoming games
at Oxford, Wycombe, Sheffield
Wednesday, AFC Wimbledon,
Ipswich Town and Wigan Athletic
can now be booked by calling
07591 111251 or by emailing
cfuawaytravel@yahoo.com.
We are also pleased to be offering
sanitary products in selected toilets
around the ground for the rest
of the season. Tesco Newmarket
Road and Cambridge Charity
Fund Raisers have kindly agreed
to sponsor female toiletries for
the next seven matches at the
Abbey Stadium. Photograph is Ian
Darler, Ian Westwood Manager
Community. We would like to thank
Tesco’s for their support
There is still a need for more Abbey
Helpers and Programme Sellers on
Matchdays. If you are interested
in helping or know someone who
might be, please contact me
by calling 07703274034 or by
emailing dave.matthew-jones@
cambridge-united.co.uk.
These roles are important and
really improve the experience for
our supporters. They are often the
first people that supporters meet
and it is really important that this
contact is a friendly, warm and
informative one.
Enjoy the game!
Memories Down
Afternoon everybody
and a warm
welcome to our
visitors from the
Hyndburn borough of
Lancashire. A friendly
club and a great pub
at the ground - what
more could an old
Coconutter want?
Ware going back to 19th
February 1983 in the Fifth
Round of the FA Cup for a
home tie against the might
of Sheffield Wednesday. I
was in my teens at the time
and I still remember the
build up to this one with
some fondness.
Whether it was the relative
mediocrity of the League
campaign, the 0-6 tonking
at Stamford Bridge a month
before still ringing in the
ears, or just a vague notion
that after two relatively
straightforward home ties
against Weymouth and
Barnsley, this could just be our
season. Teenage dreams, eh?
I can even remember the
night before as the weekend’s
proceedings kicked off with a
disco at my town ‘local’ back
in the day - the good old
Anchor in Silver Street – with
the DJ extraordinaire being
a former CUFC commercial
manager. Oh we boogied
away to the early 1983 hits of
the day. That year was a bit of
a vintage actually when you
consider the likes of Down
Under, Red Red Wine, Billie
Jean and Let’s Dance to name
but a few.
Anyway, a crowd of 10,834
was relatively shoe-horned
in to the Abbey for a tight
encounter.
To my mind, I don’t think
I’d have liked Gary Megson
after some of his latter day
antics in the world of football
management but boy he
destroyed my dreams that
day with a brace in the 37th
and 73rd minutes, which
even the mighty Chris Turner
pulling one back a couple of
minutes later couldn’t rescue
for the U’s.
Like a fortnight ago, it wasn’t
meant to be. Funnily enough
a week later we met the
Owls again at Hillsborough in
the League and were beaten
comfortably 3-1. Wednesday
made the semi-finals that
year but just missed out on
promotion which came the
following season.
They remained in the top tier
until 1989-90, one season out,
and then they were around
for the Premier League party
in 1992, along with their town
centre neighbours.
On this day in 2016 the US
author Harper Lee passed
away at the ripe old age of
89. I am sure we have all read
at least one of her novels.
Enjoy yourselves.
Habbin
WE HAD ALL HEARD OF ACCRINGTON
STANLEY LONG BEFORE THE FAMOUS
MILK ADVERT AND BEFORE BUMBLE
DESCRIBED THE PLACE ON TEST MATCH
SPECIAL AS GOD’S CHOSEN ACRE.
They were always associated with disaster, collapse
and the kind of fall from grace since experienced
by many other football clubs, such as Bury,
Macclesfield and Stockport County. There was no
Fans’ Led Review at that time, no talk of spreading
the money more evenly and fairly throughout the
game, or regulating football externally to protect
the interest of devoted fans.
When Stanley went bust and failed to complete
their season, no one realised that it was actually
possible for a Football League club to simply cease
to be because of financial mismanagement or
incompetence, but it happened abruptly and without
mercy and has continued to happen to an increasing
number of clubs until now. At last people have
realised that the big clubs have become very rich
at the expense of the minnows who have become
increasingly unable to compete with those who use
their money to increase their power and dominate
the game. Without change, the grass roots will wither
and die and the sport itself will kill the golden goose.
But we know all this.
We played Accrington in our first season in the
Conference. I had no idea that they still existed. Fola
Onibuje, our very own Bambi on ice, tormented them
at the Abbey. We didn’t do so well at their place but
J.K.Rowling
We are only as strong as we are
united, as weak as we are divided.
what a welcome our fans got. Several of us enjoyed
a pint of shandy in the Crown Inn where we found
the softly spoken locals friendly, knowledgeable and
interested in the views of people from other places
who love the game as much as they do. It was a bit
like going to Newcastle in that respect.
Stanley don’t have that many fans or season ticket
holders, which means that the club has been run
superbly well. It should be held up as a fine example
to us all as proof of what can be done without
wealthy foreign owners with a dodgy human rights
record. A lot of credit must go to John Coleman who
knows a good player when he sees one and is, to my
mind, one of the great managers. He inspires loyalty
and total commitment to the team in his players, in
much the same way that Mark Bonner does here at
Cambridge. The locals at Burton last week were full
of praise for the way our players never give up. It is
a spreading reputation which is well deserved. We
have been missing some key players through injury
but others have really stepped up to the plate. Ours
is a squad in the true sense of the word, albeit a small
one. The romantics among us, and there are some on
the Habbin, are delighted to see Accrington doing so
well. Long may it continue, providing they don’t do
too well today!
Tuesday 8th February, 2022 | Sky Bet League One | Priestfield Stadium | Attendance: 3,824
A late goal from Vadaine Oliver
saw the U’s leave Gillingham with
nothing to show for their journey.
Cambridge United fell to their
second defeat of the season
against Gillingham in a match that
won’t live very long in the memory
for those associated with the U’s.
Neither goalkeeper was very
active throughout the game as
both sides struggled to create
clear-cut chances, but the crucial
one came with five minutes
remaining as Oliver turned the ball
home from just a few yards out
following a Gills corner.
Whilst Mark Bonner’s team had the
majority of the ball and at times
looked the more likely scorers,
they didn’t do enough in the final
third to punish their opposition.
Owen Mizon
AFTER FOUR CONSECUTIVE TREKS IN THE BREAD AND
BUTTER THAT IS LEAGUE ONE, IT’S INVIGORATING TO
BE BACK HERE AT THE ABBEY STADIUM TODAY.
The U’s will no doubt be
recuperated for this one after
enjoying a full week of rest for
the first time in 2022. Here,
we will assess three makeor-break
midweek fixtures
- which ultimately could have
determined the final rankings
for some teams – as well as
dissecting the league table and
handing praise to those who
impressed in last weekend’s
enthralling clashes.
Wigan Athletic strengthened
their hold on their promotion
rivals following a professional 2-0
victory over Crewe Alexandra at
the DW Stadium. After a strenuous
opening hour where neither side
could gain the ascendancy, Callum
Lang latched home for the Latics
with a cushioned header to break
deadlock. Although it didn’t
quite open the floodgates, their
pressure did pay its dividends
with eight minutes remaining on
the clock after James McClean
added the elusive second via a
deflected strike. A gallant effort
with a particularly compact first half
performance, the Railwaymen must
now convert that into valuable
points as the clock ticks away
rapidly.
A barnstorming seven-minute spell
proved damaging as Burton Albion
dispatched Bolton Wanderers
with an assuring 3-1 success at
the Pirelli Stadium. Ripping up the
form book, an early flurry brewed
as the Brewers ruthlessly exposed
defensive frailties. Joe Powell
kickstarted the carnage after firing
in at the back post, before a brace
of headers from captain John
Brayford stunned the Trotters, who
could only muster up a consolation
at the death through Dion Charles’
lobbed effort.
After being consigned to twelve
losses in their first thirteen away
from home, you could forgive
Doncaster Rovers for dreading their
travels up and down the country.
Four games and three wins later,
it’s quite the contrary as Gary
McSheffrey’s side picked up a 0-1
win over ten-man Lincoln City. The
drama arrived with ten minutes to
go after Dan Gardner hammered
home the decider from the penalty
spot – frustrating the Imps who saw
Joe Walsh receive his marching
orders in the dying embers.
The table will make for intriguing
dissection by the time you read this,
with the frontrunners Rotherham
United and Wigan Athletic doing
battle with some Friday night
football. The Millers, who had won
six on the bounce, looked to extend
their gap at the top to nine points
and continue their inevitable surge
to promotion. With a mirroring
objective, the Tics obtained a fivepoint
and three-game advantage
over 3rd position. Rampant.
The best of the rest are MK Dons,
who have lost once in twelve and
have found their identity under
the promising Liam Manning – the
36-year-old has won the manager
of the month award twice already
this campaign. Two points below
them are Sunderland, winless
in four but bolstered by the
appointment of no-nonsense
Alex Neil and the homecoming
of Jermain Defoe. Wycombe
Wanderers are lodged beneath
with an identical record to the
Black Cats, flip the form script and
you’ll find Plymouth Argyle lurking
in the shadows –a well-drilled and
energetic side boasting some of
the Football League’s brightest
prospects, the Pilgrims make up
the congested play-off pack.
Putting the pressure on are Oxford
United and Sheffield Wednesday,
déjà vu, Bolton Wanderers have
once again started a calendar year
points with Accrington Stanley who
are spearheaded by visionary Sean
McConville – the ever-present has
12 assists to his name already.
In a block of three sides who
currently acquire a healthy lead
over the relegation pack are
Charlton Athletic, Cheltenham
Town and Cambridge United.
The two former have the solitary
point more than the U’s, but all
have remained hard to beat and
mustered promising unbeaten runs
at some point that has put them in
good stead.
Perhaps the real underachievers
of the season thus far are Lincoln
City – they’re in 17th and have only
recorded consecutive triumphs
once. Fortunately for them,
Shrewsbury Town are winless in
seven, Fleetwood Town’s record
stands at six and AFC Wimbledon’s
is increasingly concerning and
stands at twelve – they last won in
early December. As you’d expect,
this has created a dogfight – the
aforementioned teams are afloat,
but for how long?
Morecambe are in 21st on 30
points, two losses from six has
helped nonetheless as they gear
up for a paramount afternoon.
Gillingham need to make up five
points, but the signs are promising
for Neil Harris – they’ve conceded
just twice in their first four games
under his tutelage. Doncaster
Rovers, the only side in the bottom
nine to taste victory in their last
outing, will breed confidence at
the right time. Situated at the
basement are Crewe Alexandra
– six successive defeats with 14
conceded in the process is tricky
reading. Suffering with second
season syndrome – can David Artell
eradicate the disease?
As always, on behalf
of everyone connected
with the Women’s team I
would like to wish Mark,
the players and staff all
the very best of luck for
today’s game.
I am sure after so many weeks
with midweek games the extra
preparation time has been very
welcome!
Since my last programme notes,
the Women’s team have played two
games. First up was a trip to Kent
Football United on a very blustery
afternoon with the wind blowing
straight down the pitch. In the
first half we could not find the net
despite having lots of possession
and opportunities. Kent then took
advantage of the wind to take the
lead as a shot was saved by Lauren
Webb but followed up and tapped
home at the far post. In the first
half we hit the crossbar twice and
saw one effort cleared off the line
but given the chances created,
there was no panic from our point
of view.
In the second half the players
started quickly and were rewarded
when Ruth Fox placed a perfect
header into the far corner from an
Emma Jenkins cross. Soon after,
Alysha Stojko-Down scored our
second from a fantastic strike from
just outside the box, and new
signing Nicole Emmings scored the
third just 10 seconds after coming
off the bench to secure the three
points.
Then, last weekend we faced a trip
to league leaders Hashtag United
and yet again faced a strong wind
blowing from the coastline at
Canvey Island. The first half started
very evenly but Hashtag took the
lead from a set piece headed
home at the far post. They then
doubled their lead just before
half time which made the second
half a real uphill battle, which only
got steeper as Hashtag scored
directly from a corner immediately
after coming out from the break.
A further two goals from the
opposition in the second half made
for a really tough afternoon. With
several key players missing against
the league leaders, it was always
going to be a difficult match, but
there are lessons to be learned
from a team likely to win promotion
this season.
Finally, I just want to remind
everyone that next Sunday we face
Norwich City at the Abbey Stadium
in a 2pm kick off. Season Ticket
Holders can get in free and pay on
the day is just £3 for Adults and £1
for Kids. It would be great to see as
many people there as possible to
show their support for the Women’s
team.
Let’s get behind the lads today and
hopefully we will all be celebrating
another three points by this
evening. Come on you U’s!
Ahadme, Kokolo
2
Knibbs, Smith
Saturday 12th February, 2022 | Sky Bet League One | Pirelli Stadium Princess Way | Attendance: 2,578
United twice came back from
behind at Burton Albion to claim
a share of the points.
After getting off to the worst
possible start, which saw the
U’s fall behind after less than
a minute, Harvey Knibbs’
spectacular strike levelled things
up before the half.
William Kokolo put the home side
in-front again at the midway point
in the second half, but United
fought right back and equalised
through Sam Smith’s close range
bundle over the line.
The home side’s best chances
came through their aerial assault
from set-pieces whilst United could
have made more of a number of
counter attacks, but in the end
both sides had to settle for a point.
AFTER FOUR CONSECUTIVE LEAGUE GAMES AWAY
FROM THE ABBEY AT FLEETWOOD, BOLTON,
GILLINGHAM AND BURTON, IT IS GOOD TO BE BACK
ON HOME SOIL FOR TODAY’S VISIT OF ACCRINGTON.
In fact, the U’s have already
been on their travels seven times
in the calendar year to date,
which is more than some teams
have played in total for 2022!
The U’s have also played an
amazing 19 Tuesday night fixtures
this season and, if you include
the midweek EFL Trophy game
with Portsmouth last month, that
number is increased to 20. This
hectic schedule, together with an
already thin squad having been
somewhat depleted by injury, has
tested the side to its limit. Given
all these factors, to see Mark
Bonner’s men sitting comfortably
in mid-table is testament to their
character and sheer will to put
points on the board.
Talking of resilience, today’s
visitors have, for many years,
been the perfect example of
successfully battling the odds.
Promoted to the Football League
in 2006, they were regularly
tipped by so-called experts to
drop back into the Conference,
based I assume purely on their size
and modest playing budget. Even
in 2018, they were the bet of many
to be relegated, but defied those
predictions to win the League Two
title by a clear five points, ahead
of Luton & Wycombe.
The story has been similar with
them playing at a higher level,
with Stanley continuing to buck
the trend to finish 14th, 17th
and 11th last season since their
promotion, with a playing budget
likely to be amongst the lowest in
League One – if not the lowest.
Their on-pitch success is down
to the astute tutelage of John
Coleman, who has mastered the
art of building mentally strong,
hard-working sides capable
of challenging any side in the
division, some of whom have richer
histories, larger stadiums and
access to much bigger recruitment
funds. Aside of a couple of years
away, he has been at the Stanley
helm since 1999, which is almost
unheard of in today’s game, with
the revolving door of management
ever active elsewhere.
A remarkable 33 Managers or Head
Coaches have left their positions
during the 2021/22 campaign,
with only Ryan Lowe and Russell
Martin at Plymouth and MK Dons
respectively, resigning to take
over at another league club.
Everyone else has been shown
the door through a perceived lack
of performance. Six League One
bosses contribute to that number,
with Lee Johnson the latest to pick
up his P45, despite Sunderland
sitting third in the table, just two
points off the top spot.
There are many clubs who could
probably learn lessons from
Accrington and one or two other
shrewdly run outfits, in long-term
planning, patience and a little less
jerking of the knee perhaps?
Supporting over
300,0
At eBay, we believe the heart of football is community.
It’s where it all started. When the butchers and the bakers,
the shipbuilders and the ironmongers, all came together
to form the humble origins of our beloved clubs.
And today, these same people, the shop owners, the
tradesmen, and the small businesses, continue to be the
beating heart of our communities.

00
small businesses across the UK
That’s why here at eBay, we’re proud to be supporting over
300,000 small businesses from the communities of the clubs
we love. And every match day, we’re donating our advertising
spaces around EFL grounds to local businesses, in local
communities, all over the country.
So join us in supporting small businesses across the UK,
because today they need us more than ever.
