Chief Executive Officer ian mather Welcome to all who have made the trip down from Lancashire. I hope we can provide as warm a welcome as you gave us when we visited the Wham Stadium in August. Today is dedicated to families and the Mead Plant & Grab stand will be host to many young people. It is a great opportunity for the next generation of football fans to experience the thrill of a live game. At the Abbey we take pride in how we welcome all to enjoy a match in a safe and fun environment. It is with some sadness however that we can detect an element of those attending games, both here and across the country, that are causing damage to the game. My early football life was in Manchester in the late 60’s/early 70’s. Old Trafford one week, Maine Road the next. As well as great football I saw a really dark side of the game. Aggression and violence beyond the scale of anything being seen now. We do not want to go back there. Since Covid lockdowns have ended and fans have returned there has been a steep rise in bad behaviour around football. Bolton have issued bans to several people (they are not fans or supporters). At the Rotherham v Accrington game on 5 February someone ran onto the pitch and disrupted an Accrington penalty kick on the 89th minute. The retaken kick was missed – possibly costing them a point. There have been incidents involving Leicester, Nottingham, Grimsby and in many other places. The police have issued statistics which support the anecdotes: Incidents up 36% on the first half of the season (compared with when fans were last in stadiums). Arrests are up 38%. Over 99% of our fans behave impeccably however, we have had incidents of racist and sexist abuse. We have issued bans for bottle throwing and possession of flares. This behaviour has consequences: As a club we have one of the lowest policing costs in the country. Other clubs are spending over six figure sums. Would you rather we spend money on police or players? More importantly, abusive behaviour corrodes the fun. As I have said here before there is a line between banter and abuse. We don’t want this to be a library but the line is being crossed. What’s causing this and what can we do about it? There seems to be a couple of main causes: • Some young fans who are attending games for the first time post pandemic who have not picked up on how to behave reasonably in a crowd. • Drug misuse. What can be done? This is a whole Club problem. It is a small minority who cause the difficulty. Bad behaviour needs to be called out by those around the trouble makers. Fans are encouraged to report incidents to stewards. These reports will be taken seriously. We are also taking steps to monitor the situation. We have a zero tolerance towards drug misuse, racist, sexist and homophobic behaviour. We really don’t want to ban people – we want them to change their behaviour but in the final analysis we will eject and ban those who cause trouble. Enjoy the game.
