Cambridge United v Accrington Stanley

As always, on behalf
of everyone connected
with the Women’s team I
would like to wish Mark,
the players and staff all
the very best of luck for
today’s game.
I am sure after so many weeks
with midweek games the extra
preparation time has been very
welcome!
Since my last programme notes,
the Women’s team have played two
games. First up was a trip to Kent
Football United on a very blustery
afternoon with the wind blowing
straight down the pitch. In the
first half we could not find the net
despite having lots of possession
and opportunities. Kent then took
advantage of the wind to take the
lead as a shot was saved by Lauren
Webb but followed up and tapped
home at the far post. In the first
half we hit the crossbar twice and
saw one effort cleared off the line
but given the chances created,
there was no panic from our point
of view.
In the second half the players
started quickly and were rewarded
when Ruth Fox placed a perfect
header into the far corner from an
Emma Jenkins cross. Soon after,
Alysha Stojko-Down scored our
second from a fantastic strike from
just outside the box, and new
signing Nicole Emmings scored the
third just 10 seconds after coming
off the bench to secure the three
points.
Then, last weekend we faced a trip
to league leaders Hashtag United
and yet again faced a strong wind
blowing from the coastline at
Canvey Island. The first half started
very evenly but Hashtag took the
lead from a set piece headed
home at the far post. They then
doubled their lead just before
half time which made the second
half a real uphill battle, which only
got steeper as Hashtag scored
directly from a corner immediately
after coming out from the break.
A further two goals from the
opposition in the second half made
for a really tough afternoon. With
several key players missing against
the league leaders, it was always
going to be a difficult match, but
there are lessons to be learned
from a team likely to win promotion
this season.
Finally, I just want to remind
everyone that next Sunday we face
Norwich City at the Abbey Stadium
in a 2pm kick off. Season Ticket
Holders can get in free and pay on
the day is just £3 for Adults and £1
for Kids. It would be great to see as
many people there as possible to
show their support for the Women’s
team.
Let’s get behind the lads today and
hopefully we will all be celebrating
another three points by this
evening. Come on you U’s!
