kom nadat drie rowers,
Woensdag om middernag op
haar huis toegeslaan het.

‘n SEEKOEI het bykans grootskaalse
konsternasie tydens
Vrydag se aand-gholf van die
Tzaneen Sakekamer veroorsaak.
Geskokte spelers het na die
kompetisie vertel hoe die
seekoei enkele meters van
hulle af verby gestorm het terwyl
hulle besig was om te
speel.
Die Sakekamer se aandgholf-toernooi,
een van die
gewildste gholfdae op die
plaaslike kalender, lok jaarliks
‘n vol veld en Vrydagaand was
die veld weer besonder vol.
Teen omstreeks 20:00 het verskeie
spelers ‘n lawaai gehoor
en die vierbal wat onder Paint
Pot se vaandel gespeel het, het
die lummel van ‘n seekoei
gewaar toe hy enkele meters
van hulle af verby gestorm
rowers haar voordeur oopgebreek
het.
Sy onthou niks.
Haar huis alarm het om omstreeks

Jacobs het ‘n sterk vermoede
wie die inbrekers kan
wees.
Sy sê dat sy dankbaar is dat
sy nog leef en nie aangerand is
nie. ‘n Saak is nog nie geopen
toe LETABA Herald met haar
gesels het nie. Die verdagtes is
steeds op vrye voet.
Daar is glo die vorige nag by

Almal lag nou lekker oor die
voorval, maar dit kon ernstige
gevolge gehad het indien die
seekoei brandweerman wou
speel en al die kerse sou wou
doodtrap.

‘n PIONIER van Tzaneen, Esther Geldenhuys
(94) is Dinsdag oggend oorlede.
Sy was ten tye van haar afsterwe ‘n inwoner
van Macadamia aftree oord.
Sy laat haar seun, Hardus agter.
Haar begrafnis diens sal Dinsdag, 26 Mei
vanuit die NG Wolkberg gemeente om 11:00
plaasvind.
Police on lookout
for Mhlanga
POLICE are looking for Samson Mhlanga from
Mozambique, whom in February last year
assaulted his wife, Tsakani Eunice Mathebula,
after an argument at Mabete compound where
they were staying.
The suspect allegedly assaulted Mathebula
by kicking and punching her and pouring
boiling water onto her. She was admitted to
Letaba Hospital where she eventually passed
a w a y.
Samson allegedly ran into the dam on Mabete
farm after spotting police, and stayed in
the water for approximately three hours.
The police search dog unit was called to the
scene, but their dogs could not go into the
water as the dam is believed to contain crocodiles
and hippos.
The unit did however confirm that the suspect
was still in the water. After the police
departed, farm labourers informed them that
the suspect had left the water and gone to the
compound where he packed all his belongings.
He then allegedly ran in the direction of
Tzaneen farms.
Samson Mhlanga is still at large and anyone
with information regarding his whereabouts

Katte vrek in strikke

‘n VETE tussen diereliefhebbers en ‘n vermeende
dierehater is besig om KAT-estrofiese
gevolge aan te neem.
Verskeie inwoners van Premierpark in die
omgewing van Adshade en Pearlman strate se
katte word blykbaar deur ‘n diere(kat)hater in
strikke gevang, met die doel om hulle glo uit te
wis.
‘n Inwoner wat anoniem wil bly vertel
emosioneel dat hulle met hulle eie "speurwerk"
‘n sterk vermoede het wie agter die
wrede dade sit. Hy is deur twee inwoners op 1
Januarie 2008 gekonfronteer, waarop hy blykbaar
aggressief herken het dat hy strikke vir die
katte stel, maar dat hy nog nie suksesvol was
nie.
Volgens die inwoner is sy verweer dat die
katte die wilde voëltjies vang.
Hy het blykbaar voëlvoerders in sy tuin
aangebring.
Verskeie inwoners hier het vertel dat hulle al
by nadere ondersoek by ‘n sekere erf ‘n rol
draad gesien het.
Dit is glo onduidelik waarvoor dit ingespan
word!(?)
Tog is dit snaaks dat van die katte wat wel die
strikke "vryspring" duidelik gesien kan word
dat hulle in ‘n strik gevang was. Erge skaaf
merke in die vel en op die pels is duidelik
s i g b a a r.
Die aangedane inwoner sê: "Die katte ly nie
honger nie. Hulle kry drie keer per dag kos. Dit
is in ‘n kat se natuur om voëls te vang, dis hoe
hulle geskape is. "
Gaan jy ‘n leeu stop om ‘n bok te vang?
Sy vertel verder dat al 18 "katte-kinders"
aangeneem is.
"Dit was straat katte wat een vir een by ons
aangekom het. Ons het hulle begin voer. Van
hulle het so mak geword dat vier nou al in my
huis woon. Al 18 is op eie onkoste gesteriliseer
by twee veeartse in Tzaneen. Ons het die
kostes wat duisende beloop self gedek. Soms
het dit broekskeur gegaan, net ter wille van die
katte vir wie ek so lief geword het," vertel sy
h a r t s e e r.
Nog ‘n inwoner, wat in dieselfde kompleks
woon is besig om met sy nege katte te trek.
Hy vertel woedend dat een van sy katte
kinders, Queenie, sowat ‘n jaar gelede by die
huis aangekom het met ‘n draad strik om haar
lyfie.
Kleintjie het ook met skraap merke van ‘n
draad tuisgekom, en Skefies het ook ‘n draad
strik om haar lyf gehad.
Vince en Patroon het nooit weer huistoe
gekom nie.
Nog ‘n inwoner se twee katte is spoorloos,
Meisiekind en Baba.
Hulle beplan blykbaar ook om te trek.
Die DBV het op 8 Mei 25 briewe in die
geteisterde omgewing aan huisbewoners uitgedeel.
Spesifiek aan die een waar daar vermoed
word dié dade gepleeg word.
Letaba Herald is in besit van die brief.
Dieremishandeling is strafbaar.
Die aangedane vrou vertel dat sy na ‘n
"vierkantige skuur" sonder ‘n plafon wat nou
gerestoureer word deur haar vriend, trek.
"Ek laat my pragtige huis agter. Ek is bereid
om te trek ter wille van die katte waarvoor ek
so lief is."
Die diereliefhebbers in die omgewing doen
‘n beroep op die persoon om asseblief met sy
gru dade op te hou.
Ellie Potgieter van die DBV sê: "Daar moet
absolute bewyse wees voor ‘n persoon
aangekla kan word vir dieremishandeling.
Gewoonlik kry ‘n eerste oortreder slegs ‘n
waarskuwing. Boete betaling kan betrokke
wees en ‘n kriminele oortreding kan teen jou
naam geskryf word.
Potgieter sê dat strikke en vergiftiging onder
diere groot kommer wek in Tzaneen.
Sy waarsku persone dat die DBV nie skroom
om persone wat skuldig is aan dieremishandeling
aan die pen te laat ry nie.
Blykbaar kan oortreders tussen R400 tot R10
000 boete of drie tot ses jaar tronkstraf opgelê
word.
‘n Persoon kan dalk van mening wees, dat
iemand met so mentaliteit van dieremishandeling
eerder in ‘n skuur sonder ‘n plafon moet
woon, met beperkte beweging, vas aan ‘n
halsband van lemmetjies draad...

Street on Monday morning.

Collision
causes grief
A TRUCK driver caused much grief on Monday
morning when he drove into the back of a
parked BMW in Peace Street.
Ironically, at the time of the accident, the
owner of the vehicle was visiting Mercurius
Motors in search of another car.
The owner had left two of her friends in the
back seat of the BMW, who phoned her
immediately after the incident.
She bought the BMW 530i last year September,
and was distraught to find her vehicle’s
boot, bumper, and all the back right lights
destroyed.

Welcome to Tzaneen
PACKING all their belongings, the children,
granny, and the four dogs, and leaving Tilburg,
Holland to immigrate to South Africa is no
small task, but that’s exactly what the van
Brunschot family did in just six months.
Thomas and Marian van Brunschot own two
security firms in Holland, one specialising in
general security, and the other supplying bodyguards.
Between them they have more than 20
years experience in all aspects of security.
Their work led them all over the globe, and
often put them in perilous circumstances.
As a result of their work, Thomas and Marian
spent very little time with their three children.
They didn’t like their country anymore, and
were taxed more than half their salaries.
It was time for a change.
The couple put their heads together, and
decided on three possibilities for their new
home: Alaska, Australia and South Africa.
South Africa won the contest, being "a very
beautiful and interesting country", as Thomas
put it, and one close to the family’s heart.
They wanted to create something for themselves,
and quite liked the idea of farming and
entering the tourism market. They felt that
South Africa was the best place to do so.
The farming and tourism sectors would also
offer Thomas and Marian much more time to
spend with their children.
Once that decision was made, the van
Brunschots had to choose a town or city.
Limpopo was their only choice of province,
as they believe it to be the most beautiful in the
c o u n t r y.
Their research led them to four possibilities:
Orighstad, Thabazimbi, Phalaborwa and
Tzaneen.
The family took on a different method of
research, and decided to stay a while in each
town in order to get the feel of it.
Orighstad was too cold, Phalaborwa too hot
and Thabazimbi too far from anything.
Tzaneen wasn’t too hot, too cold, too wet or
too dry - it was perfect for the van Brunschots.
They bought the 28ha farm, Hasivona, just
outside Tzaneen, and moved in at the beginning
of April.
The farm offers many possibilities in the
farming and tourism sectors, and boasts an
amazing view of Tzaneen at night.
Ten hectares of the farm will be identified for
farming purposes, and the rest of the farm
already has some infrastructure in place for
turning it into a tourist attraction.
One large rondavel was already built on the
farm, kick-starting the family’s plans for their
Africa Mountain Lodge. (They have already
received their first booking for June).
There are more rondavels to come, and two
bush camps as well.
There is also a large structure on the farm that
will be converted into a conference centre,
with overnight facilities on the second floor.
The rooms can also be booked for bed and
breakfast.
The conference centre will be built with
weddings, birthdays and year-end functions
also in mind, as the couple is planning on
incorporating a large kitchen into the plans.
The ideal country and town was chosen, and
the business plans on track. Now the children
needed a school.
Petronella (11), Carolina (10) and Adriaan (9)
had no English influence back in Holland, thus
Tzaneen Primary was the best choice for
them.
Petronella and Adriaan adapted quickly, and
Thomas admits, caught on to Afrikaans much
faster than him.
With broken English and Afrikaans, Thomas
and Marian explains that Carolina had difficulty
adapting at first, and often longed for
Holland.
As she steadily caught on to Afrikaans, her
disposition changed and she soon started enjoying
the country just as much as the rest of
her family.
Granny on the other hand still misses Holland
and her sisters she left behind.
She remains positive though, and finds comfort
in a good cuddle with the dogs.
It is very important for Thomas and Marian to
have their entire family fit into South Africa.
They do not want to be just another immigrated
family, but want to adopt everything
there is to adopt of South Africa and become
entirely integrated with the country and its
people.
Back in Holland, they were warned about
South Africa’s violence, but the couple refused
to believe without witnessing first.
They decided to walk to Nkowankowa to test
fate.
They arrived home safe, and their positive
view of South Africa was boosted even more by
their "very, very, very nice neighbour".
The couple was also very impressed with the
friendliness of people in the same business as
them. Asking for advise is not a problem here,
whereas in Holland any business is a cutthroat
business. Asking advice from a competitor is
unheard of.
One of the things the van Brunschots love
most about South Africa is the way the country
allows people to think for themselves.
They say that, in Holland, everything is

controlled from birth to death, and people
never even get the opportunity to figure out life
for themselves.
Even the people of Holland were impressed
with the family’s move, and the Dutch television
programme, "Ons Vertrek", followed the
family around South Africa, documenting their
alternative method of relocation.
The crew of this programme watched by 16
million viewers, will return again in July to
follow up on the family’s progress and ability to
adapt. Surely the crew will return to a family
well adapted and accepted by the Tzaneen
c o m m u n i t y.
Dept stops merger
THE Limpopo education department has put
the merging of schools with less than 50
learners on hold until proper consultation with
all stakeholders.
This follows an outcry from teacher unions in
the province, who accused the department of
excluding them from decisions that affect some
of their members.
Last year, former education MEC, Dr Aaron
Motsoaledi, published the names of 224
schools in the province that were supposed to
be merged, bringing the number to 77.
Provincial education Spokesman, Ndo
Mangala, said the process has temporarily
been placed on hold while discussions with the
unions continue.
"We will resume the process as soon as we
have reached an agreement with the unions on
certain issues of concern," he said.
However, Mangala said some parents have
already moved their children from the affected
schools to those that will benefit from this
programme.
He explained that the schools mostly affected
by the process are those which were
previously known as farm schools.
He added that learners living far from their
new schools will be provided with scholar
transport by the department.
The provincial Secretary for the South African
Teachers Union (SADTU), George
Mdumela, said they are not against the merging
of the schools, but that the department had
failed to organise proper consultations with
them before decisions were made on the
m a t t e r.
In October last year, many parents whose
children attend farm schools in Mopani, expressed
concern on the process, saying it was
done with no consideration of their children.
Some parents claim their children will have
to leave school once the department starts with
the merger.

PCPF grows from
strenght to strength
Established towards the end of 2007, the
Politsi Community Policing Forum (PCPF) has
grown from strength to strength. Their most
recent meeting, held last Wednesday, proved
very productive.
The aim of the meeting was to discuss
matters of disaster management, security and
health services. Many residents, farmers and
business owners in the Politsi area, have
experienced problems with the service delivery
of the police, clinics and hospitals. The
forum therefore decided to invite the senior
management of these institutions to their
meeting to try and resolves some of the
concerns raised by the community.
No representative of any health organization,
clinic or hospital, attended the meeting,
despite commitments from all the invited
parties, thus no headway was made in that
regard.
Matters of disaster management and security
however were discussed extensively.
Both Dave Protter of Northern Security and
Neels Engelbrecht, Head of Department of
Disaster Management for the Tzaneen municipality,
suggested a database be set up of all
Politsi residents.
This database will serve many purposes:
The information gathered for the database
will assist police and emergency response
units in gaining quick access to property,
identify any residence with special training or
resources in case of an emergency, and indicate
water points and their locations easily
accessible is case of fire, to name but a few.
Attendees were reminded that the Fire Protection
Association work hand-in-hand with
Disaster Management, and requested that all
farmers join the association.
The management of the database is free of
charge and changes to any details can be
made at any time.
The PCPF already has an elementary database,
but clearly not as extensive as the one
made available to them by Protter.
It was suggested that a braai or gathering be
arranged for all Politsi residents. This will be a
fun event and a surefire way of completing the
database, should all attend.
The committee is considering this suggestion,
and should it be approved, they request
all residents planning to attend to bring their
entire family.
A point reiterated by Protter and Engelbrecht
is knowing your neighbour. This gathering will
not only serve to gather data, but also to
reintroduce neighbours - your closest line of
defence when in an emergency.
The installation of a radio network was also
suggested, considering the fact that cell phone
reception is unreliable in the area, and a daily
role call over the system can greatly benefit all
involved.
Residents of George's Valley have already
implemented such a system, and the suggestion
was positively received.
All residents should also initiate a risk assessment
programme in preparation of any
incident that might occur on their property.
Workers should also be asked were they
think the risks might lie, as they often access
different parts of the property more regularly.
Area with easy access to water should be
identified, as well as to location of any explosive
substances, eg gas bottles.
Roads and houses also have to be marked
more clearly to enable quicker emergency
response time.
This matter will however be discussed further
with the relevant government department
to prevent the removal of these signs by
municipal workers.
Many representatives of the police department
attended the meeting, including Commissioner
Phineas Ngobeni.
The committee complained to them that
charges are never followed up, and that it is
difficult to get hold of anyone who can help
them in this regard.
Commissioner Ngobeni assured his speedy
response to any queries, and also guaranteed
the assistance of Modjadjiskloof Station Commissioner,
Captain Machimana, who was also
in attendance.
In turn, the representatives of the SAPS
invited a representative of the PCPF to join
them at the rural safety meetings, where many
of their more general questions will be
answered.
The meeting was concluded in good spirit.
The date for the next PCPF meeting is still to
be announced.

Twelve escape
after bombing
of ATM
TWELVE unknown suspects escaped with an
undisclosed amount of money after bombing
a Standard Bank Automated Teller Machine
(ATM) at Tickyline next to Lenyenye.
The ATM was blown up with explosives at
around 02:00 on Tuesday morning.
It is alleged that a substantial amount of
money was loaded in the ATM the previous
afternoon. The owner of the premises that
house the ATM was called in by the security
guard on duty. The owner was shot in the
arm and also sustained other injuries.
At the time of going to press, no one had
been arrested.

Hospice het hulp nodig
HOSPICE en palliatiewe sorg sien om na die
fisiese, emosionele en geestelike behoeftes van
pasiënte en hulle gesinne.
Pasiënte is mense van enige ouderdom wat
aan lewensbedreigende siektes of toestande ly
en feitlik geen vooruitsig op herstel het nie.
Hospice Tzaneen is in Januarie vanjaar
gestig. ‘n Raad van direkteure is verkies en
hulle is besig om strategiese vereistes om die
gemeenskapsdiens suksesvol te loods, te beplan
en organiseer.
Die onmiddellike doel is om ‘n effektiewe
organisasie met die regte mense en strukture
teen Desember vanjaar in plek te hê.
Een van die belangrike strukture wat geidentifiseer
is, is Vriende van Hospice Tzaneen wat
uit vrywilligers bestaan wat elke week vir ‘n
paar uur help om ‘n vriendelike en sorgsame
atmosfeer te skep.
Vrywillige werk kan in twee kategorië verdeel
word, nl praktiese versorging soos bv
voeding, bad, beddraai of algemene hulp soos
bv tuis by pasiënte bly om hulle gesinne ‘n
blaaskans te gee, diens in ‘n hospice winkel
wat gestig gaan word, saam met ‘n palliatiewe
verpleegkundige werk, pasiënte vervoer,
blomme rangskik, pasiënte met hulle stokperdjies
help, vir hulle te lees, hulp met
fondswerwing verleen, ens.
Vrywilligers sal opleiding kry wat bestaan uit
praatjies, besprekings en demonstrasies wat by
hulle vaardighede en keuses inpas.

17 new Rotaractors were inducted at this
black-tie event held at the Mosaic Restaurant
outside Tzaneen.
The Warriors Rotaract Club is sponsored by
the Letaba Rotary Club, and although the club
consists mainly of members of the Warriors
programme owned by Rudi Viljoen, two
youngsters not of the Warriors programme
decided to join this club.
This year's incoming president was also

also planning on raising funds for the new
Tzaneen Hospice during their next Warriors

PROMOTIONS
CAN you believe it…….. The winter is actually
here and in good time. We had a very good rainy
season and winter is more than welcome.
There is NO need to stop gardening in winter.
Now is the perfect time for gardening in our
area. Our winters are not that cold and we don't
usually get frost. Plants have become dormant
and will have time to settle in through the cooler
months, before our hot summer starts again.
Haenertsburg, Magoebaskloof, Agatha,
Georges Valley and parts off Politsi are not that
fortunate. Start protecting the tender plants in
your garden against the falling night temperatures.
If you have not yet planted your spring bulbs,
plant them as soon as possible. Remember to
keep your spring bulbs watered to prevent them
from drying out. Seedlings that you should
consider for this time of the year is alyssum,
antirrhinum, chrysanthemum, cineraria, delphinium,
dianthus, gazania, lobelia, pansy,
primula, petunia, verbena and the ever so pretty
viola. Split and replant agapanthus, dietes and
most of your grass varieties.
Now is a good time for pruning deciduous
trees, as they are bare, it is easy to see which
branch is in your way. Remember to keep on
deadheading your shrubs and seedlings as this
will ensure better growth.
Continue to water and fertilize your garden
and lawn, though you don't have to do it as
frequently. 2:3:2 on your lawn every 6 weeks is
perfect. Citrus and fruit trees needs to be well
watered and keep on fertilizing with 6:1:5.
Sow flower seed like Namaqualand daisies
and Nasturtiums. Winter is a good season to
grow herbs as they don't fancy the very high
temperatures. Plant your veggie garden with
cabbage, beetroot, onions, celery, garlic and all
lettuce varieties to get a good kick start for
spring.
If you are a conifer lover, keep on applying
insecticides because the winter aphid loves
conifers.
Mulch your flowerbeds well as this will form
a warm layer and help with water retention.
Remember to mulch hydrangeas (Christmas
roses) with acid compost to enhance the growth
and colour for the upcoming season.
If you love indoor plants and you are heating
your home with electric or gas heaters, keep a
bowl off water in the room. This will keep up the
humidity in the room and stop the leaves from
drying out. Keep a look out for mealy bug and
scale on your indoor
plants.
Lastly do not forget
to restore your garden
furniture, jungle gyms
and Wendy Houses
before the rainy season
returns. You
might not have a dry

A FEW DECADES ago, poliomyelitis was one
of the world’s dread diseases.
It would occur in epidemics and we would
all worry that it would strike one of our
children and leave them dead or in a wheelchair
with a paralysis. Not a few adults were
hit by it too.
One of my best friends contracted it while
working in London and was left with badly
paralysed facial muscles. It affects the respiratory
system and the Iron Lung was created
to help the victims breathe. Then, along came
the Salk Vaccine and today it is a compulsory
immunisation for pre-school children in most
countries around the world.
Having said that, polio has not been entirely
eliminated and last year some 2000 cases
were reported by the World Health Organisation,
which has carried out a mass innoculation
campaign around the world which
reduced known cases by 99 percent. By
contrast, Aids and malaria killed more than 3
million people - many of them in our part of
the world.
So, it is interesting to note that in a bid to
declare the world polio-free – as is the casewith
small pox – the Bill Gates Foundation has
joined the final fight against polio by contributing
$255 million to the huge $630 million
fund established for this purpose by the
Rotary Foundation of Britain and Germany.
The fact is that, although the incidence has
been vastly reduced, it is a tenacious beast, as
it spreads easily and quickly through contact
and water, and it is not clear if a massive
infusion of funds by the Bill Gates of this world
will achieve total eradication. Only one in 200
children who contract the virus show the
paralysis symptoms, leaving the other 199 as
silent carriers.
Polio cases dropped to about 1600 last year
– compared to 350 000 in 1988 – but it persists
in some poor, densely populated countries
such as Nigeria and northern India. Polio
vaccines are not delivered reliably to 20 to 30
percent of children in these areas Illiteracy and
lack of trust in corrupt authorities are to
blame.

in a Nigerian province came to a

Worse was to follow the 2003 hiatus in
Nigeria, when the polio virus ‘exploded’
across the borders into 30 neighbouring African
countries, where it had previously been
eliminated. The cost of eradication is put at
about $1 billion. A problem in northern India
is that the vaccine was found to be only
partially effective. It is suspected that the
typical child in the region harbours so many
intestinal bugs that their systems fail to recognize
the vaccine.
While a child in Europe or the United States
requires three doses of the oral vaccine to gain
immunity, a Nigerian kid may need six and a
child in northern India may require 12. Delivering
this much medicine and keeping track
of the recipients is a staggering logistical
challenge.
The polio effort, which began 21 years ago,
is costing $600 million a year with no end in
sight. The WHO thinks it will be ‘at least five
years’ before an aggressive inoculation campaign
can be relaxed. That’s assuming there is
no decrease in the funding rate. It looks as
though Gates and the other donors will need
to keep dipping in their pockets!

Letaba Herald het in Februarie oor die
dapper ses-jarige dogtertjie berig.
Sy is met haar naelstring om haar nek
gebore en is as gevolg daarvan serebraal
gestrem.
Sy het eers op die ouderdom van drie leer
loop, maar kon nie haar knieë reguit maak
of haar voete plat neersit nie.
Sy het as gevolg daarvan elke keer geval,
maar dan weer opgestaan en weer prob
e e r.
Dee-Gene is in Augustus verlede jaar
geopereer en loop nou sonder hulp met
reguit bene en plat voete.

Prepare for fire season
PREPARE for the fire season this year. Farmers
and landowners have to create firebreaks in
order to reduce the risk of fires spreading
between farms/properties.
According to the law, different types of
boundaries require different widths of
firebreaks.
The width of the firebreak between two
plantations has to be at least 5m wide. Likewise
the width between plantation and orchard,
plantation and bush, orchard and bush,
and orchard and grassland.
Grassland poses a major threat during the
dry season, and excluding the orchard-grassland
boundary, all other boundaries connecting
with grasslands have to be at least 10m
wide.

Simposium sal plaasvind van 6 tot 9
September 2009 in die Kruger Nasionale Park,
Suid-Afrika, en sal aangebied word deur die
Suid-Afrikaanse Makadamia-kwekersvereniging
(SAMAC). Soos met die eerste
Internasionale Makadamia Simposium wat in
1999 in Suid-Afrika gehou is, is die primêre
doel om mense binne die internasionale
makadamiabedryf vanoor die hele wêreld
bymekaar te bring om inligting uit te ruil. Die
4e Internasionale Makadamia Simposium sal
by Berg-en-Dal ruskamp wat aan die suidelike
grens van die Kruger Nasionale Park geleë is,

die simposium begin op die Sondag namiddag
met registrasie en 'n openingseremonie.
Die Maandag en Dinsdag sal daar beide
mondelinge- en plakkaat-aanbiedingsessies

met 'n gala-ete op die Dinsdagaand.

in Suid-Afrika sal op die Woensdag

Beeste en ander lewende hawe gaan vanjaar
koning kraai by die skou onder die vaandel van
Corrie en Llewellyn Labuschanie.
Die gedugte paar beplan om kwaliteit diere,
wat van die beste in Suid-Afrika is, op skou te
plaas, en die nodige blootstelling en eer aan
die telers te besorg.
Woensdag 5 Augustus sal daar ‘n junior
beoordeelaars kursus aangebied word. Die
beoordeling van die verskillende rasse sal op
Donderdag 6 Augustus plaasvind.
Skougangers sal ook die voorreg kry om die
diere van nader te beskou, maar die aap gaan
nie nou al uit die mou gelaat word nie.
Die tenders vir die biertuin, sekuriteit en
ander is tydens die vergadering toegestaan.
Die jaarlikse vroue funksie sal vanjaar deur
die VLU op Saterdag oggend, 8 Augustus,

Nuwe produkte vir die landbou:
Die nuwe tendens in die Landbou vandag is
om produkte te gebruik wat die minimum
impak het op die omgewing en die mens, maar
nog steeds 'n aanvaarbare beheer gee van 'n
siekte of insek.
Spoedwel Landbou was gelukkig om die
verpreiding van 'n aantal nuwe produkte te
bekom wat aan bogenoemde vereistes beantwoord.
Ons sal oor die volgende aantal weke 'n
aantal van hulle in detail bespreek.
1. Moskult: Dit behels die vermentering en
vermeerdering van 'n wye reeks lewendige
bakterie kulture wat in die grond toegedien
word met die volgende eienskappe:
Dit breek organiese materiaal af en ander
giftige chemiese stowwe in die grond.
Die organismes vervaardig ensieme en ander
voordelige chemiese stowwe wat die wortels
beskerm teen siektes.
Van die baterie spesies in die produk is in
staat om stikstof uit die lug te neem en om te
skep in stikstof wat die plant kan benut en kan
dus behulpsaam wees om die totale stikstof
toediening vir die gewas te verminder.
Die bakterië produseer vitamiene en
aminosure wat plantgroei bevorder asook om
natuurlike chelate te vorm wat die opname van
veral mikro-elemente bevorder.
Dit verhoog die organiese suurinhoud van
die grond wat weer minerale oplos en plantvoedingstowwe
van die plant beskikbaar stel.
Die vyf groepe in die produk is soos volg
ingedeel met die volgende eienskappe:
Groep 1: Stel vasgelegde fosfate en minerale
v r y.
Groep 2: Breek organiese materiaal af en
bevat stikstofbindende bakterië.
Groep 3: Bakterië wat vitamiene produseer.
Aminosure en plant groeihormone wat plantgroei
en wortelvorming stimuleer.
Groep 4: Stimuleer plantgroei en inhibeer
swamme wat wortelsiektes veroorsaak.
Groep 5: Produseer 'n wye reeks ensieme
wat kitien in die selwande van insekte, larwes
en eiers verteer en onder andere 'n effek het op
aalwurms. Verder bevat die mengsel Trichoderma
wat bekend is vir sy aksie op skadelike
organismes in die grond.
Ons het ook 'n reeks gekonsentreerde organiese
sure:
1. Humiensuur: Wat oor 'n lang termyn
vasgelegte kunsmisstowwe los maak van die
klei en dien as voeding vir die bakterië in die
grond.
2. Fulviensuur: Dit dien as 'n vinnige stimulant
vir wortelgroei en enige strestoestand
wat die plant onder mag verkeer te versag. Dit
het ook die effek om 'n ploegbank te versag
sodat die wortels van die plant dit kan pen
e t r e e r.
3. Aminoful: Hierdie produk is baie soos
bogenoemde maar het ook aminosure bygevoeg
om die plant verder te stimuleer.

Careers in Agriculture -
what you should know!

A RECENT article in a South African newspaper,
The Sunday Times, shed some light
onto career opportunities in South Africa with
the title "Spotlight on new trends in the job
market" (Published:Aug 10, 2008).
In the article it stated: "The index does not
include employment in agriculture and the
informal economy, referred to as "the bakkie
brigade"."
This tongue in the cheek reference to employees
in the agricultural sector as being a
bakkie brigade got me thinking: Is it still the
general perception that the formal agricultural
sector only comprises out of farmers with a
"bakkie-tan", who drives around all day and
drink coffee on the veranda? (Car manufacturers
have exploited this idea infinitely in
television advertisements.) And if so, why
aren't more people interested in agriculture as
a career field?
C.S. Lewis said "What you see and hear
depends a good deal on where you are
standing; it also depends on what sort of
person you are." And where you are standing,
according to me, is a choice you make!
What do we choose to "see and hear"?
Globally, agriculture is under pressure due
to an increase in production costs and the
implications it has on a farming operation.
Coupled to this, urbanization is still taking
place, leaving huge social burdens on farming
communities.
In South Africa new laws and regulations has
caused widespread panic in the agricultural
sector. The land reform policy, with the resultant
insecurity regarding land claims is a
burden almost all farmers have to bear.
Water, labour, BEE and tax laws contribute to
this mounting "see and hear" snowball that
seems to threaten agriculture in South Africa.
All of this (and more) is a true threat.
However, lets change our vantage point and
view some facts about agriculture:
" The human race will always have to eat.
The world population stands at 6,733,164,238
(and counting) and food demand is ever
increasing. Coupled to this, agriculture is a
universal science; meaning training in a specific
county does not influence your employment
potential anywhere else in the
world.
" Even though land reform will, according to
many projections, be part of the South African
landscape for quite a while still, numerous
government officials have voiced there concern
over food shortages, and the government
has taken a firm stand on the importance of
food security, not only to provide for South
Africa, but also for the rest of the continent.
" Agriculture is based on sound scientific
facts and relies on research to move forward.
This means that not every Joe Soap can be
employed in the industry, and that people with
sound knowledge and experience is needed.
" A growing scarcity of trained people/ of
talent in the agriculture sector is starting to
develop, meaning great opportunities exist.
"… the frontiers for competition in certain
segments of the industry have shifted away
from securing job vacancies to the identification
of scarce talent in those areas where
skills are in short supply.
Whilst certain sectors of the South African
economy are booming such as the construction,
mining and agricultural sectors, other
sectors are in decline ...." RL Pike, CEO of

Adcorp, a leading provider in South Africa of
staffing, human capital management and business
process outsourcing services. The reason
for this scarcity is not only a growing agricultural
sector, but also a lack of new employees
being trained at formal training facilities.
At South African universities, the amount of
final year students (studying degrees) being
trained in Horticulture, Agronomy and Soil
Science does not exceed 50 in total. This has
been the case for a number of years.
How can we change prospective students'
"see and hear"?
Prospective students interested in agriculture
should be informed of the following:
" There is a wide range of employment
sectors to choose from with an agricultural
plant sciences background. Industries within
this sector that employ plant scientists include
propagation (nurseries, seed companies etc),
production and management (farms and estates),
product handling (packhouses, packaging
material suppliers etc), marketing and
exports (local markets, government, export
companies), supply chain management (supermarkets,
pre-packers, distributors), research
(universities, government etc), training
(Universities, training colleges) and landscape
design, amongst others.
" There are vacancies available in the South
African agricultural sector, and this need is
likely to rise within the next few years. (Take a
look at websites like www.agrijob.co.za.)
" There are bursaries available in the ag-

ricultural sector. The Subtrop website
(www.subtrop.co.za) will soon be up and
running, and there will be links to the Lindsey
Milne bursary, as well as other bursary opportunities
for agricultural sciences students.
" There are willing people in the industry that
will show prospective students around, giving
them more insight into what it is that they are
doing. If you are looking at specific career
opportunities in the agricultural sector, please
contact me so we can arrange a meeting with
relevant persons within the sector you are
interested in (theo@subtrop.co.za).
Prospective agricultural students normally
have an agricultural background. It is these
surroundings that influence their perception
about agriculture. It is therefore important that
you as part of the agricultural community
begin to be aware of the opportunities that
does present itself in the agricultural sector;
not only in South Africa, but also in the world.
Be positive about the industry. Maybe change
where you are standing with relation to what
you hear, to see and hear the truth about
employment in the agricultural sector and to
influence people around you in a positive
w a y.
In future articles, I will try and focus on
specific study fields within agriculture, highlighting
the advantages of the specific course,
give examples of employment opportunities
with a similar qualification, and maybe give
real life examples of people in the industry,
and their perceptions about the agriculture
and the way forward.

op ‘n rekenaarskerm in driedimensionele
formaat sien en kort daarna ook as ‘n
was-model.
Jacques van der Walt, eienaar van Ickinger
en self ‘n goudsmid, se entoesiasme en liefde
vir sy werk borrel oor wanneer hy oor die
indrukwekkende tegnologie praat. Die masjien
kan tot op ‘n skaal van 0,01mm werk.
Hy is ‘n baanbreker in dié veld en het die
stelsel van AUTO-CAD Rhyno reeds in 2006
aangekoop, kort na dit in Suid-Afrika bekend
gestel is. Dit was toe reeds ‘n eerste in Tzaneen
dus ook noord van Pretoria.
Wanneer Jacques juweliersware vir ‘n kliënt
m b v die program ontwerp, is daar geleentheid
vir persoonlike interaksie tussen hom en
sy kliënt, (gewoonlik een van die skonere
geslag wat nie kan wag om te sien hoe die
eindproduk gaan lyk nie!)
Jacques teken haar ontwerp m b v die
program op die rekenaarskerm, terwyl sy by is
en insette lewer.
Die kliënt kan reeds hier sien hoe die finale
ontwerp gaan lyk, in kleur en in die edelmetaal
en -stene van haar keuse. Dus ‘n produk
spesifiek volgens haar eie unieke behoeftes en
wense gemaak. Hy sal die kliënt ook bystaan
met praktiese raad en sal ook maklik laat
deurskemer wanneer hy dink ‘n ontwerp nie
heeltemal by die persoon se persoonlikheid
pas nie.
Daarna word die ontwerp na die driedimensionele
was modelleer masjien gestuur.
Hier word die ontwerp in die presiese detail in
was uitgesny.
Hierna word die juweliersstuk vanaf die
wasmodel in ‘n edelmetaal gegiet. Die stene
word geset en finale afwerking gedoen. Dit
alles binne drie dae! Hy glo nie daaraan dat
kliënte weke of selfs maande vir ‘n stuk moet
wag nie.
Elke stuk wat deur sy hande gaan is sy trots.
Weer eens word sy perfeksionistiese geaardheid
weerspieël in die fyn afwerking en
foutlose vakmanskap. Hy ontwerp en vervaardig
ook juwele wat dan in voorraad gehou
word.
Sy idees kry hy deur baie fyn na mense in die
algemeen te luister. ‘n Idee vorm en na ‘n paar
dae sien nog ‘n pronkstuk die lig.

stuk aan ‘n kliënt oorhandig en dit lyk asof
daar ‘n liggie in haar kop aangaan.
Dit wat sowat 28 jaar gelede as ‘n stokperdjie
begin het, het nou sy lewe geword.
Hy het destyds terwyl hy deeltyds studeer
het en in ‘n laboratorium gewerk het, die maak
van juwele in die verskillende edelmetale by
dr Willie Smit geleer.
Later het hy sy stokperdjie van sy huis af
beoefen. Hy het egter gou besef dat dit te groot
raak en sy eie juweliersake begin.
Sowat 11 jaar gelede het hy Ickinger gekoop
en dit is hier waar hy deesdae sy passie
suksesvol uitleef.
Ickinger beskik afgesien van die moderne
studio met rekenaar tegnologie, ook oor ‘n
goed toegeruste werkwinkel waar juwele vervaardig,
verander of herstel kan word.
MC van der Walt is hier sy regterhand en
deel ooglopend Jacques se entoesiasme.
Dit is ook hier waar ‘n stuk vanaf die rou stuk
edelmetaal verwerk kan word tot ‘n
pronkstuk.
Die edelmetaal word eers gesmelt, daarna
in ‘n vorm gegiet en daarna tot ‘n stuk
juweliersware verwerk.
Die uitgekerfde wasmodelle wat met die
CAD Rhyno program ontwerp is, word ook
hier tot pragstukke gegiet.
Jacques se perfeksionisme en presisie kom
duidelik na vore in sy werk. ‘n Baie hoë
standaard word deurgaans gehandhaaf en die
eindproduk is beslis nie sommer net kommersieël
nie, maar iets met duursame

PAST District Governor of the Lions, Aubrey
Herbstein, once told the Letaba Tzaneen Lions
Club that they have done many things right,
but that he thinks they should have more
members.
Starting off with 17 members in 1969, the
club grew to 31 members in 2007.
2008 saw the club grow with an astounding
10 members, putting their numbers at 41.
This growth ensured the club the Best Membership
Growth Award in 2009.
They were also given this award in 1982.
It is no mystery why the club’s membership
has grown so much over the past years.
The Letaba Lions Club has always been
proactively involved in charity work, and the
personal satisfaction guaranteed through this
has drawn new members year after year.
Koos Smit of Smit Garrun Brokers approached
Martin Fröise, now serving his
second term as president of the Letaba
Tzaneen Lions Club, to help with what was to
become the Smit Garrun/Lions Family Day.
The Lions grabbed the opportunity and
helped turn the day into a fun event for the
family, and a mighty fundraiser for the comm
u n i t y.
2008, its first year, saw them raise R80 000.
This year’s total has not been calculated yet.
The day is hosted at Tzaneen’s Jetty 3, but
not long ago the Lions realised that the place
needed an urgent facelift.
This year the club received the President’s
LION Ilze Czubora, Secretary of
the Letaba Tzaneen Lions Club.
Objective Award for their upliftment project of
the Jetty. They received this award for planting
50 indiginous trees, removing dead blue gum
trees, building 20 new braai spots, upgrading
the clubhouse, installing storm water pipes
and impact walls, and upgrading the public
toilets and roads.
The new and improved Jetty 3 is once again
something to be proud of, and there is still
much improvement in the pipeline.
Together with the local Rotary and Round
Table clubs, the Letaba Tzaneen Lions also
helped bring the Magoebaskloof Mountain
Bike Challenge into existence.
This challenge has become a very popular
race nationally, and still draws hundreds of
tourists annually.
The Lions have been selling Christmas cakes
as part of their fundraisers since the 70s. This
tradition never died out and in 2008 these
Lions managed to sell 150 cases of cake.
The AMCUP project operates a feeding
scheme and facilitates skills training and job
creation in communities.
Together with the Letaba Tzaneen Lions
Club, 1000s of kilograms of food have been
distributed throughout the community, with
the first delivered batch valued at about R129
000.
The second batch was delivered on
Monday, with the value still to be calculated.
In promotion of Lionism, the club developed
a website that was launched in 2008.

Remember the Lions
THE Letaba Tzaneen Lions Club has
supported many national initiatives,
but it is here in Letaba that the extent of
their work can truly be seen.
Just as any Lions club, the Letaba
Tzaneen Lions Club focus their resources
on any group of needy individuals,
irrespective of age, race of
creed.
They have supported old-age homes
just as much as crèches, the hungry
just as much as the blind, and schools
just as much as churches.
Beside lunches and dinners organised
for the elderly, Letaba Tzaneen
Lions dedicated decades to an annual
weekend outing for the aged. During
the 70s, 80s and 90s, and before it
became too expensive, the elderly
could spend a weekend at the Kruger
National Park.
All expenses were paid with money
collected by the club, for just this
purpose.
The Lions used to host a film showing
every three weeks for the Old Age
Home in the then Duiwelskloof (Modjadjiskloof).
After a very successful
Morning Market held at the Eiland in
1977, the Lions were able to present
the elderly with a 66cm colour television
set of their own, and also pay
their television licence for a year.
Until 2007, Matshwi Primary School
in Ga-Kgapane had no library. They
had an empty classroom and several
donated books. The Lions were informed
of this, and decided to jump in
and create the first library in Modjadji
with a service radius of 40km.
The library was completed, but the
school had no funds to pay for a
librarian. The Lions couldn't leave it
at that, and committed themselves to
paying the monthly salary for a permanent
librarian.
When Speel-‘n-Bietjie crèche in
Duiwelskloof needed a facelift in the
70s, Letaba Tzaneen Lions Club
didn't hesitate to work in conjunction
with the SAVF of Tzaneen and the then
Duiwelskloof Municipality to give the

The highest accolade to receive as a
Lion is the Melvin Jones Fellowship
Award, awarded to a Lion in recognition
of his or her exemplary humanitarian
work and contributions
made in their name to the Lions Club
International Foundation.
Over the years Letaba Tzaneen
pleasant haven for children once
again.
The Letaba Tzaneen Lions Club has
also paid much attention to the various
medical needs of the community.
This year marks Letaba Tzaneen
Lions Club’s 40th birthday, and since
its birth in 1969, has purchased various
medical equipment for hospitals in
and around Tzaneen.
When Duiwelskloof Hospital
needed a laparoscope in 1977 (a
device for internal gastric inspection),
the Lions decided to help. Although a
laparoscope at that time was a rare
commodity to have, and only used in
large hospitals, the Lions hosted a
Morning Market at the Eiland and in
Duiwelskloof, and a fishing competition
at the Merensky Dam, to buy this
piece of equipment.
In 1971, the Letaba Tzaneen Lions
hosted a Donkey Darby. A temporary
gambling licence was attained, local
donkey owners contracted, and a
derby, with the owners as jockeys,
hosted.
This was an extremely successful
fundraiser, and with the money, the
Letaba Tzaneen Lions were able to buy
an ambulance for the Tzaneen Hospital.
1980 saw Tzaneen's hospital in the
Memorial Hall in need of an oxygen
tent. The tent cost R2 200 at that time,
but the Letaba Tzaneen Lions managed
to raise enough money and
presented it to the District Superintendent,
Dr Chris Roets, at the end of
February that year.
Before the South African National
Blood Service established a branch in
Tzaneen, the Lions regularly coordinated
a temporary blood donation clinic
in Duiwelskloof. With SANBS
Tzaneen in place, the Lions still very
much support their cause, and regularly
invite them to be part of their
events.
The Letaba Tzaneen Lions also vaccinate
the elderly against flu free of
charge, and this year managed to
inoculate 100 individuals.
Lions Club has honoured the following
members with this prestigious award:
Helmut Hanaczeck, Phil Robinson Sr,
Schalk Robinson, Philip Robinson and
Martin Fröise, making Letaba Tzaneen
Lions Club quite exceptional.
2009 has been a very successful year
for the club so far.
They received the Scrapbook of the
Year Award and their work on Jerry 3
ensured them the President’s Object-
The Letaba Tzaneen Lions Club
manages several daily services, one of
which is the wheelchair and crutch
service. Individuals who temporarily
need a wheelchair or crutches can
collect them from the Lions, who only
ask for a donation to support this
service.
This year, the Lions also bought 12
disabled parking signs. With the help
of the traffic department, the Lions will
put these up at major parking areas
across town.
Any and all unauthorised vehicles
parked on these spaces will be towed,
thus providing a valuable service to
the community.
The club also use a portion of their
raised money to pay the medical bills
of those that can’t do so themselves.
This year, a resident of Tzaneen was
in a serious car accident. The club
assisted the gentleman with R5 000 to
help pay his medical bills, and the club
challenged the residents of Tzaneen to
assist him with more monetary support.
Another R5 000 was donated to save
a baby's life.
Today, the corner of Peace and
Skirving streets in Tzaneen might be
the place to buy a car, but in the 70s,
you went there to visit the Lions
Self-Service Nursery.
Plants were donated, and anyone
could visit the unattended nursery for a
bit of greenery.
The money for the purchase was left
in a box, and Tzaneeners were several
times commended for their honesty.
Some of the money raised by the
nursery was handed over to the then
mayor of Tzaneen, Col Viljoen, for
cancer research.
Besides helping on the local medical
scene, Letaba Tzaneen Lions Club has
also helped with national initiatives,
namely Operation Brightsight, the Eye
Bank, Flight-for-Life and Medic-Alert.
They have always been willing to
help those in medical need, and is
clearly continuing the legacy that was
already taking shape in the 70s.
It’s rewarding to be a Lion
ive Award.
Their growth made them the biggest
club in the 410B district, which consists
of Gauteng, North West,
Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Swaziland,
ensuring them the Best Membership
Growth Award.
They were named the Best Club of
the Year, and who knows what else
awaits them in the future.

Lions - together in health
LIONS International is made up of
individuals who has decided to give
something back to the community,
forming the world's largest and most
active service club organisation.
Lions are dedicated to seeking out
people in need, and fulfilling that
need in an efficient, dignified and
caring way.
The International Association of
Lions Clubs was the brainchild of
Melvin Jones, a young insurance
agent from Chicago. In 1917 Jones
called together several existing clubs
who had until then only existed with
commercial motives in mind.
Jones' ideal was to create a club for
purely altruistic reasons - giving to the
community with no reward in mind
but the satisfaction of helping others.
The Lions not only help those in
their own communities, but all humans
around the world.
After the terror of the 2005 Tsunami,
Lions International was one of the
many NGO's that helped feed the
victims. However, the Lions saw beyond
the obvious necessities.
Besides being one of the first organisations
to erect water purification
centres, they also supplied victims
with spectacles - a seeming luxury
that some people cannot live
without.
In 1925 Helen Keller challenged
the Lions to become "Knights of the
blind in the crusade against darkness".
Since then, the Lions have contributed
considerably to the blind and

The first South African Lions Club
was formed in Cape Town in 1957.
Today more than 1.3 millions individuals
belong to the Lions clubs
based in 205 different countries.
They all share the same motto, "We
Serve", and often do so at a major cost
to themselves.
True Lions dedication can be witnessed
right here in Tzaneen.
After the Letaba Tzaneen Lions
Club inception in 1969, the club has
launched many initiatives, raised
hundreds of thousands of rands, and
assisted with many fundraisers, all in
the name of charity.
They too have contributed much to
the blind and visually impaired.
They joined the Operation Brightsight
campaign where eye tests are
given freely to those who can't afford
it. Old spectacles are collected and
adjusted so it can be distributed to
those who need it most, and according
to their specific needs.
Letaba Tzaneen Lions Club also
assists the Eye Bank by collects details
of individuals who would like to
donate their eyes once they have
passed away. The corneas of donated
eyes are used for transplants, offering
those with failing eyes a second
chance at sight.
The Flight-for-Life initiative was
started by Lions South Africa in 1975,
offering free helicopter flights in medical
emergencies. The service has
since been split up into various sec-
tors, but in 1977 the service was
suspended due to the enormous costs
of running such a programme. Lions
all over the country, including the
Letaba Tzaneen Lions Club, combined
their efforts, and through various
fundraisers, managed to get the
helicopter back in the air.
The Letaba Tzaneen Lions Club
raised a considerable amount of
money for this project - by selling
Lions Christmas cake!
Even the Tzaneen Municipality
joined in on the efforts and offered
three landing strips in the area, as well
as a free refill whenever necessary.
The service was accepted as part of
their ordinary ambulance service.
The Lions also assisted the Medic-Alert
initiative by marketing it ext
e n s i v e l y.
Branded medallions could be
bought and any medical conditions or
allergies of the wearer engraved on
it.
Paramedics, nurses and doctors
came to accept this method as a way
of receiving vital information about a
patient in emergency situations.
On several other occasions, Letaba
Tzaneen Lions Club has also assisted
the Red Cross, the Hillcomb Holiday
Resort for the blind, the Mouth and
Foot Painters and the Leprosy Mission,
proving the true extent of the
Letaba Tzaneen Lions Club's commitment
to all in need.

Meridian goes wild
THE Grade 2 students of Meridian
College visited Eco Park River
Lodge. They saw wild and farm
animals in their natural habitat.
They saw giraffes, nyalas,
wildebeest, zebras and even a
hippo with a small calf.
They enjoyed the outing, as
well as the picnic, and went back
to school tired but excited and
with a lot of knowledge, such as:
“Did you know that a Giraffe’s
tongue is 50cm long, or that an
ostrich can run as fast as 70km an
hour?”

Noorderland, Pietersburg deelgeneem. Die Vossies het een
bronsmedalje gewen en drie van Ben Vorster se atlete was onder die
top tien van hul betrokke groep. Voor vlnr: Yvette Coetzer ( wat ‘n
bronsmedalje M 0/17 behaal het), Lynette Coetzer ( 6de M 0/17 ) en

Vossie-netbal vaar goed
DIE Vossies se netbalspanne het die afgelope
naweek besonder goed gevaar toe hulle teen
Hoërskool Kemptonpark (’n makro skool met
meer as 1 700 leerlinge), kragte gemeet het.
Die 1ste netbalspan het veral beïndruk deur
sterk terug te veg nadat hulle die eerste kwart
van die wedstryd agter geloop het.
Die 1ste span sorg weer eens vir ’n opwindende,
harde en fisiese wedstryd. Die span
van die Vossies het uit die staanspoor Kemptonpark
harde bene laat kou. Na die enigste
kwart wat aan die Kempies behoort het, het die
Vossies vanaf die 2de kwart die oorhand gekry
en die doele ingeryg en vir ’n opwindende
wedstryd gesorg om die sterk span van Kemptonpark
te wen. Die volledige uitslae is soos

1969-Vossies hou veertig jaar reünie op Derby dag
HOëRSKOOL Ben Vorster se matrieks van 1969 hou die
naweek van 5 tot 7 Junie 2009 'n 40-jaar reünie in
Tzaneen.
Meer as 40 van die 66 matrieks van destyds het reeds
aangedui dat hulle die reünie gaan bywoon. Vier persone
kom selfs uit die buiteland. Die reünie val saam met die
Derby Dag tussen Ben Vorster en Merensky en die eerste
rugbyspan van 1969 kom ook die naweek vir 'n 40-jaar
reünie byeen. Die span het tot in die kwarteindronde van
die destydse administrateursbeker deurgedring en moes
twee keer teen Tom Naudé uitspeel om 'n wenner te
bepaal.
Daar word nog na 4 matrieks van 1969

Letters en Liggies Revue.
EEN van die graad 10 groepe wat houding gegooi het tydens Hoërskool
Merensky se Letters en Liggies vertoning.
Merensky vat vlam met
‘Letters en Liggies’
DIE Plasie kultuurverhoog het die afgelope week behoorlik vlamgevat
tydens die energieke, lewenslustige Letters en Liggies produksie.
Die kleurvolle dansers van die verskillende graadgroepe het verskillende
dansgenres uitgebeeld, van hip hop
tot baldanse, waarmee hulle die gehoor heerlik
vermaak het.
Die gehoor kon identifiseer met die grys
hoofkarakters wat ook kleur in hulle lewe
begeer het, en die pittige, interessante dialoog
het die lagspiere behoorlik geprikkel.
Die storielyn - raak betrokke en geniet jou
lewe - is relevant veral vir die jeug van vandag
en ons bedank graag vir Helmi du Plessis,
Mari Weber en die Merensky personeel wat
die keurige produksie op die planke gebring
het.

JACO van Rensburg was Saterdag die ster van
die wedstryd toe hy 8 paaltjies in die eerste
winterliga wedstryd gekry het.
Ben Vorster se Winterbuffels het die wedstryd
teen PHS van Polokwane gespeel.
Die wedstryd het by die Pietersburg
Krieketklub se B-veld plaasgevind. Dewald
Joubert, kaptein van Ben Vorster het loot
gewen en PHS gevra om eerste te kolf.
Die Vossie boulers het vroeg toegeslaan en
die druk end uit volgehou.
PHS is vir 88 lopies in die 27ste beurt
uitgeboul.
Jaco van Rensburg het die rare voorreg
gehad om agt paaltjies vir slegs dertig lopies te
neem in sy toegelate nege beurte waarvan drie
leeg was.
Werner du Toit en Pieter Devenish het die
ander paaltjies geneem.
Na ‘n 10 minute breek het Ben Vorster die
telling begin jaag.
Drie vinnige paaltjies het vir ‘n ligte geskarrel
gesorg, maar John Viljoen en Hennie
Botes het die skip na veilige waters gestuur.
Ben Vorster het slegs 16.2 beurte nodig
gehad om die wedstryd met 4 paatjies te
wen.
Kolwers wat lopies aangeteken het was
Marnus Booyens met 20 van 21 balle en JC
Cloete met 19 lopies.

Vossies wen Southern Cross oortuigend
TWEE van Ben Vorster se
hokkiespanne het die afgelope
naweek op die Vossies se tuisveld
teen Southern Cross meegeding.
Die 0/16B meisies het hul opponente
met ’n telling van 2 – 1
geklop, terwyl die 0/15 seuns met
’n skitterende telling van 8 -0
gewen het.
Vossie-rugby gaan
van krag tot krag
HOëRSKOOL Ben Vorster se rugbyspanne het
die afgelope naweek besonder goed gevaar
teen Hoërskool Kemptonpark (’n makro skool
met meer as 1 700 leerders).
Verlede jaar het Kemptonpark in die finaal vir
makro skole met sy 1ste span teen Hoërskool
Waterkloof gespeel en vanjaar het sy 0/16-span
in die finaal van die Mitchelinreeks ook teen
Waterkloof uitgespeel.
Die kompetisie was dus baie sterk en wanneer
na die tellings en punteverskil gekyk word,
kan Ben Vorster ongelooflik trots wees op die
naweek se rugbyprestasies.
Die 1ste span moes om alles te kroon nog
sonder sy erkende haker speel en dit op sigself
het ’n nadelige effek op die seniorspanne onder
toe gehad. Des nie teenstaande het die 1ste
span sy staal gewys deur hierdie wedstryd met
6 – 5 te wen.
Die ander uitslae was soos volg: 0/14A
verloor 12 – 15, 0/14B wen 14 – 7, 0/15A gelyk
14 – 14, 0/15B verloor 5 – 7, 0/16A verloor 3 –

WERNY Taljaard en Renier de Meyer het
deurgedring na die halfeindronde van die
ATKV-redenaarskompetisie. Hierdie kompetisie
dien dan ook as die eindronde van die
Limpopo Kring. Dit sal 5 Junie 2009 te Hoërskool
Ben Viljoen op Groblersdal aangebied
word. Leerlinge wat hier deurgaan, sal dan aan
die landswye ATKV finale deelneem.

Jan, Jannie wen gholfdag
JAN Buitendag, regs op die foto en Jannie Spaumer het Saterdag die
"Betterball Scrambler Drive" gholfkompetisie gewen. Die kompetisie is
deur BEC op die bane van Orangedene geborg en het ‘n vol veld van 54
spelers getrek. By Jan staan Tienie Prinsloo van BEC, links en Francois
van Rooyen, klubkaptein. Jannie was nie beskikbaar tydens die neem
van die foto nie.
LLWELLYN en Corrie Labuschagne het die tweedeplek in Saterdag se
gholfdag op Orangedene verower. In die middel van hulle staan Tienie
Prinsloo van BEC wat die gholfdag geborg het. Die derdeplek is deur
Jacques Nel en Leon Pieterse ingepalm. Johan du Toit en Bennie
Osmers het die vierdeplek verower.
Kerk hou fiets wedren
DIE AGS gemeente te Modjadjiskloof bied op
30 Mei ‘n fiets wedren aan.
Die wegspring is by die Constantia boeresaal.
Alle fiets geesdriftiges word uitgenooi
om die dag saam met die gemeente te gaan
geniet. Daar sal ook ‘n verskeidenheids stalletjies
wees.
Medaljes sal aan deelnemers oorhandig
word wat die wedren voltooi. Daar is ook
prysgeld op die spel vir eerste, tweede en derde
plekke. Daar is drie kategoriee: 10km, 30km en
80km.
Die eersteplek in die 80 km wen ‘n rooibok.

DIE wenners van die Sakekamer se aandgholf-toernooi was weer eens ‘n reuse sukses. Die
NTT Toyota span was die wenners van die aand-gholf. Vlnr: Mnre Raletelle, Mmona, Marcelle
Breedt van E-Bearing, wat as hoofborg van die aand opgetree het en Frans Moshone.
✬ Twee spanne verslaan Potties deeglik
SPORT
Letaba maak amok
LETABA Rugbyklub het Saterdag by die
Tzaneense skougronde amok gemaak en beide
die eerste- en tweedespanne het weghol-oorwinnings
oor Potgietersrus behaal.
Die eerstespan het Potties met 62-5 verslaan
nadat die tuisspan tot en met rustyd baie
lusteloos en belangeloos voorgekom het. Swak
hantering en ‘n gebrek aan samespel het
menige belowende bewegings in die eerste
helfte laat skipbreuk ly. Die telling met rustyd
was 17-0 in Letaba se guns, maar mens het die
gevoel gekry dat Potties nog die wedstryd kan
wen as Letaba nie sokkies optrek nie.
Na rustyd was dit egter skielik ‘n ander storie.
Die agterspelers het mekaar gevind en skeilik
was die samespel tussen die agttal en die
snellers ook na wense en het Letaba die drieë
ingeryg.
Skrumskakel en kaptein, Bobbie du Plessis
het driekeer agter die besoekers se doellyn
gaan kuier terwyl heelagter, Giepie
Labuschagnè nie net ‘n drie gedruk het nie,
maar ook met 7 doelskoppe en ‘n strafskop
geslaag het.
Na ‘n sukkelende eerste helfte was Letaba
briljant in die tweede gedeelte van die wedstryd
en is dit onmoontlik om uitblinkers uit te
s o n d e r.
Letaba se tweedespan het uit die staanspoor
goeie spel gelewer en danksy uitmuntende
samespel en goeie afronding het hulle die arme
Potties met 80-0 afgeransel.
Karel Theunissen het weer sy bykans
gebruiklike drie drieë gaan druk en hy is nou
vinnig besig om fiks te raak en sy ou spelpeil te
bereik.
Elke speler op die veld het sy werk gedoen en
as ‘n span baie goed gekombineer.
Ongelukkig het Potties se derdespan nie
opgedaag nie.
Saterdag se wedstryde was die laaste in die
eerste ronde en interessant genoeg het nog nie
een van die vier top spanne in diè afdeling,
Letaba, Messina, Pietersburg en Noordelikes,
nog ‘n tuiswedstryd verloor nie.
Eerskomende Saterdag speel Letaba in die
eerste wedstryd van die tweede ronde teen
Pietersburg in Polokwane. Dit gaan ‘n harde
neut wees om te kraak, maar sou Letaba verras
en daar wen, gaan dit die Groentruie in ‘n baie
sterk posisie vir die res van die seisoen plaas.
In die eerste wedstryd Saterdag het Nkowankowa
se Jeugspan, wat ook onder Letaba se
vaandel uitdraf, ‘n Jeugspan van Polokwane
met 8-0 verslaan.
DIE jeug klub van Nkowankowa se rugbyspan, DZJ Mtebule wat speel onder die vaandel van die
Letaba rugbyklub het Saterdag geseëvier teen Mountainview jeug rugbyspan van Polokwane.
Die eind telling was 8-0. Links agter staan Stanley Shay, afrigter van DZJ Mtebule by sy span.
Lede skryf vandag baan offisiers kursus
DIE BJV (Bosveld Jagters Vereniging) bied ‘n
baan offisiers kursus, eksamen, asook ‘n instrukteurs
eksamen aan.
Die kursus vind vandag (Donderdag) plaas
om 18:00 by die BJV klubhuis.
Die Jnr 2 en Senior kursus van die BJV sal
