The Word on the Street

haddonfield.today |

Haddonfield’s third annual

Restaurant Week will run from

March 1 thru 6.

If you owned a food or

beverage establishment,

what style would it be,

and why?

“It seems that every

other restaurant in

the area is a pizza

place,” says ANNE

JOHNSON of Cherry

Hill. “So I’d opt for

an ethnic theme.

Turkish, for example.

With belly dancers.”

“My sons and I

have been serious

home brewers for

about ten years,”

says JACK DEAL of

Haddonfield, “so

we’d open a brewery

in Haddonfield. Two

bars are better than

one!”

Cherry Hill’s RICK

HANSEN would run

a sports bar. “Good

people. Good food.

Good times. And lots

of good games on

lots of screens.”

How to

make a UBE

MILKSHAKE

.

RAUL MACKAY of

Voorhees says he’d

“create something

totally new (for

this area, at least):

a Filipino dessert

restaurant. Our

specialty would be

ube milkshakes.”

Scan the QR!

The daughter of

DOUG CAMPBELL

of Cherry Hill lives

in Hawaii and owns

a vegan gelato and

ice cream truck.

“So I’d ask her for

some recipes, add

a few plant-based

favorites of my own,

and run a vegan

food truck,”

says Doug.

Stephanie

Medina of

Voorhees works

at El Nopalito, the

Mexican restaurant

in Haddonfield, so

if she were to open

a restaurant of her

own it would be

Mexican also. The

specialty? “Birra

tacos!”

Quakers and Lenapes in early New Jersey

An online program by Jean Soderlundat 7pm on Tue Feb 22 will draw on

information from her upcoming book, Separate Paths: Lenapes and Colonists in

West New Jersey. Titled “From Shackamaxon Island to Haddonfield: Quakers

and Lenapes in Early New Jersey,” the program is part of Haddonfield Monthly

Meeting’s 300th anniversary celebration.

The Lenapes, including the Armewamese communities of the Cooper River

and Timber Creek region, resisted full-scale colonization for decades. They

remained sovereign, protecting personal and religious liberty while avoiding

violence through peaceful conflict resolution. Though Friends shared these

values, the epidemics and colonists’ greed for land resulted in the decline of

Armewamese towns similar to patterns in militarized colonies such as Virginia,

Massachusetts, and New Netherland.

Donations for women in need

Nearly two-thirds of low-income women surveyed

reported struggling to afford menstrual products at

some point during the previous year, according to a

report in Obstetrics & Gynecology Journal.

Additionally, statistics show that one in five girls in

the US miss school due to lack of period products.

In response, the Alumnae Association of Douglass

College is conducting a special service project

during February. Titled “Helping Women, PERIOD,”

it seeks to make a difference in the lives of women

and girls in need, by providing them with free

feminine hygiene products.

To support the project, the Haddon Fortnightly

is collecting new, unopened menstrual products

for donation to Distributing Dignity, a Cherry Hillbased

nonprofit organization that will forward the

donated sanitary pads, tampons, pantiliners to local

nonprofit entities that provide services to women in

need, for distribution to their clients.

Members of the community are invited to support

this project directly by dropping off new, unopened

feminine hygiene products at the office of Lisa

Wolschina & Associates, 224 Kings Highway East,

thru Mon Feb 28, 10am to 4pm weekdays, or in the

collection bin at the door at other times.

To make a financial contribution, send a check

payable to The Haddon Fortnightly (with “Helping

Women, PERIOD” on the subject line) to PO Box 321,

Haddonfield NJ 08033 by Mon Feb 28.

Spring musical

3/19: Mayor’s

Breakfast

The Lions Club,

sponsors of the annual

Mayor’s Breakfast for

the past 30 years, has

rescheduled this year’s

event to Sat Mar 19.

The location is the

Presbyterian Church’s

Fellowship Hall. Start

time: 9am.

The reason for the

postponement (from Sat

Jan 22) was the Club’s

concern for the health

of those attending, given

the recent dramatic

increase in cases of

Covid-related illness and

hospitalization.

The Lions Club is

putting plans in place to

ensure that appropriate

social distancing will

be possible. Masks and

proof of vaccination will

be required.

Those who attend

the Breakfast can

look forward to some

enhanced features

related to the Citizen of

the Year award.

The first award was

presented in 1973 and

2022 marks the 50th

anniversary, so the Lions

want to honor not only

this year’s recipient,

but also give special

recognition to past

recipients who are able

to attend.

In addition to the

Citizen of the Year

award, the Lions will

present the William

Hansen Youth of the Year

award to Maddie Cush,

president of the Leo Club

at the High School.

Tickets for the

Breakfast are $15 ($10

for those age 12 and

under). Exception: There

may be no such thing

as a free lunch, but

former Citizens get to eat

breakfast for free.

A FOND FAREWELL

In the restaurant industry a “fond farewell” is

the very last part of the guests’ experience. It is

far more than a departing gesture, it is a promise

of friendship and family, and a genuine desire to

meet again.

When we first opened our doors on North

Haddon Avenue in Haddonfield in 2001, we

never imagined the innumerable memories we

would come to cherish.

To all of our guests, and especially those

familiar faces who became our close friends –

THANK YOU for sharing with us your life’s events,

both the momentous and mundane: weddings,

baby showers, 1pm meetings, Saturday morning

tell-all brunches, Thursday take-out nights. Your

patronage has brought us more joy than we can

express, and we will be forever thankful for the

life experience you have given us.

The last two years have been hard – maybe

even harder than getting started from scratch. The

pandemic made things much more challenging,

but it also gave us an opportunity to step back

and re-evaluate our life and livelihood.

Bottom line? A dream came true. A leap of

faith landed on solid ground. A long shot found

its intended target. We have lived our dream,

nurtured it into existence, breathed life into it,

and watched it grow. Now we must let it go.

The Little Tuna has closed.

To all of you who read this and feel a pang

of sadness in your heart, just know that we

could not have made it without you. We must

remember, that Life is Long and the World is

Small. Our paths will cross again, friends.

At the he beginning of this new chapter in

our lives, we THANK YOU from the bottom of our

hearts for all your love and support over the last

20+ years. Here’s to a final, fond farewell.

Calling local women artists

After a two-year hiatus – thank you, Covid! – the

High School’s 50/50 Club will hold its fourth annual

Art Show at the Haddon Fortnightly on Sat Mar 19,

from 11am to 4pm.

Titled “Through a Woman’s Eyes” and with the

theme “Honoring Hidden Women,” the event will

be co-sponsored by the Fortnightly’s Evening

Membership Department.

Local female and female-identifying artists from

high school age up are encouraged to submit

their work. The fee is $25 for up to five pieces ($5

per piece for students). Prizes will be awarded in

a variety of categories, and some works will be

available for purchase.

There will be food and entertainment throughout

the day, as well as a basket raffle. The event is open

to the public. Admission is free, although donations

at the door will be appreciated ($10 is suggested).

To date, the 50/50 Club – a gender equity group –

has raised some $8,000 for Girls Learn International,

a group that “educates and energizes students in

the global movement for girls’ access to education.

It supports the empowerment of students as they

discover that through their own creative initiatives,

dedication, and passionate leadership, they can

create real solutions that address the obstacles

facing girls and women here and around the world.”

Time to dine!

The Partnership for Haddonfield invites you

to celebrate Downtown Haddonfield’s restaurant

renaissance during its third annual Haddonfield

Restaurant Week – Tue Mar 1 thru Sun Mar 6.

Enjoy a Taste of Haddonfield as the town’s food

and beverage scene grows in scope and diversity,

showcasing American and international cuisines.

Participating establishments on Kings Highway,

Haddon Avenue, Kings Court, Ellis Street, Mechanic

Street, and Tanner Street will feature specials,

including fixed price points ($20, $30, $40),

highlighting some of the best of what Haddonfield

has to offer.

Not just restaurants! This year, retailers are

joining in, offering special discounts, participating

in joint promotions with restaurants, and extending

their hours for the event.

“In the last three years, the number of restaurants

has increased dramatically as Haddonfield

enjoys a Restaurant Renaissance,” said Michael

Marciante, the Partnership for Haddonfield’s

executive director. “Restaurant Week is an exciting

opportunity for visitors to experience our food and

beverage businesses.”

The demand for locally-sourced ingredients and

authentic dining experiences has influenced the

food scene in a remarkable way. More than a dozen

new restaurants and specialty food locations have

opened downtown in recent times: Italian, British,

French, Mexican, Indian, Thai, Sushi.

Along with spacious seating options, the

Downtown now offers an incredible array of dining

options: quaint coffee and ice cream shops; fine

chef-owned restaurants offering a range of cuisine

choices; easy-going dining options such as hoagies

and pizza; and food-oriented retailers selling

everything from gourmet cupcakes and specialty

olive oils to culinary imports from France and the

British Isles.

For an up-to-date list of participating restaurants

and their specials, scan the QR code n or visit

Celebrate with the Symphony: 70!

Symphony in C will celebrate its 70th anniversary on Sun Apr 24 from 5 to

9pm at Tavistock Country Club.

The Symphony was founded as a community orchestra – the Haddonfield

Symphony – in 1952. Over time, its mission evolved into that of a training

orchestra for young professionals and a comprehensive music education

organization serving people of all ages throughout the region.

Symphony in C performs at Rutgers-Camden Center for the Arts and other

venues, and contributes to the quality of life we enjoy in Greater South Jersey.

The 70th Anniversary Gala will be chaired by Penny and Stephen E. Ryan of

Marlton and Rosie Hymerling of Haddonfield. Emcee will be former Haddonfield

mayor and Symphony in C board chair, Jack Tarditi.

Guests will enjoy cocktails, gourmet dinner with wine, and entertainment by

pianist David Zipse and the Elegance Electric String Quartet. Tavistock Country

Club’s Covid protocols in effect at the time of the event will be observed.

The gala will honor Charles (Chuck) Heuisler and C. Carney (Chick) Savery,

both of whom were instrumental in guiding the former Haddonfield Symphony

from community orchestra to the music education powerhouse it is today.

The event will also remember former board chairs and Archer Law attorneys

Robert R. Kugler and Lee Hymerling, who passed away in 2021.

Proceeds from the gala will support the Symphony’s Summer Camp, Youth

Orchestra, concerts for young people, and after-school instrumental music

programs in Camden and the region.

For Gala reservations and information, including details of sponsorship

opportunities, call Denise Stuart, vice president of development, at

856-240-1503 or email her at dstuart@symphonyinc.org.

Symphony in C is a New Jersey 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so direct

donations are tax-deductible, as are substantial portions of ticket costs and

sponsorships for the gala.
