S
ituated in the old 1920s
NatWest bank on the
junction between
Mansfield Road and Hucknall
Road bordering Mapperley
Park, Masala Junction offers
both home style and modern
Indian dining in a building full
of history and character.
Naj Aziz bought the bank in
2015, and with the help of
architect sister-in-law Lyn
Niblock-Aziz, transformed
the building into the stunning
restaurant it is today.
With over 30 years experience
and a string of award winning
restaurants behind the family,
it’s no surprise Masala Junction
won the accolade Best
Independent Neighbourhood
Venue at the last Nottingham
Bar & Restaurant Awards
and previously, Winner of
Best Indian Restaurant at the
Nottinghamshire Food and
Drink Awards.
The menu is a reflection of
the Aziz’s love of fine Indian
home cooking and offers a
very warm insight to the food
scene from their origins of
Kashmir. “Simple dishes with
fresh ingredients, wonderfully
cooked by my mother are
a vivid memory.” says Naj
Aziz and it’s this inspired
style of cooking that we
were delighted to sample in
the Junction Goat Ka Salan
dish – a family recipe that
the Aziz brothers enjoyed
whilst growing up to celebrate
special occasions.
The menu is carefully curated
to satisfy every taste, beside
the home style and modern
Indian fare, sit delicious meat
alternatives such as Mattar
Soya Keema, a traditional dish
with a modern vegan twist.
The vegan and vegetarian
dishes are clearly not an after
thought here. Our starters,
the Carrot and Beet cutlets
(pictured) and Avocado
Golgappas are deliciously
crisp, beautifully presented
and spiced to perfection.
The wine list, crafted by
master sommelier, one of
only 200 worldwide, is unique
and reflects careful and ideal
pairing with the style of food
at Masala Junction.
Stuffed!
Stuffi ng has been around since at least
Roman times. The cook book ‘Apicus
de re Coquinaria’ has recipes for
stuffi ng made from vegetables, herbs,
nuts and offal and it was used to stuff
chicken, pigs and even dormouse!
Since the late 1800’s in America it is
called ‘dressing’. This stems from the
way it was cooked at Thanksgiving,
outside the bird rather than in the cavity.
Stuffi ng was also deemed too crude a
term for the well to do.
The great thing about stuffi ng is that
you can stuff pretty much anything with
pretty much anything! From chicken
(see Kiev recipe opposite) to seafood
and most vegetables. But also thinking
outside the box you can hollow out
a loaf of bread, stuff it and you have
the perfect picnic food. It isn’t just for
savoury fi llings either. You can stuff
pancakes, cookies, cupcakes, apples
and the list goes on...
Stuffi ng as a method of cooking is used
across the globe. From Greek stuffed
vine leaves to Indian stuffed paratha to
the Russian pirozhki (stuffed bread). If
you think about it every country has a
speciality that involves stuffi ng. How
about a Cornish pasty? Or an Italian
Calzone? Or a Japanese gyoza? We
love to stuff everything!
My absolute favourite has to be sage
and onion. Not the dry stuff you get
from a packet, but homemade with
grated onion, dried sage, breadcrumbs,
sausagemeat and an egg. I bake it in a
dish and could eat it all day.
Stuff ed Squash with
Blue Cheese /Serves 2
1 butternut squash
200g blue cheese – crumbled
30g pine nuts – toasted
2 echalion shallots – sliced
1 tbsp thyme leaves
250g sachet cooked rice/grains
Salt & pepper
Knob of butter
Method
Heat the oven to 200°C. Line a baking tray.
Half the squash, scoop out the seeds and
stringy bits. Score the fl esh and rub with
olive oil. Season and put a knob of butter
in the cavity of each half. Bake in oven for
45 – 90 mins depending on the size of your
squash.
In a small pan with a splash of oil, slowly
cook the onion until soft and slightly crispy.
Allow to cool.
Meanwhile – put 150g of the cheese in a
bowl, along with 20g of the toasted pine
nuts, the rice or grains. Add the cooled
onion. Once the squash is soft, remove
from the oven, scoop out most of the fl esh
and add to the bowl. Mix well and check
seasoning. Once well combined, spoon
back into the squash shells. Top with
remaining cheese and pine nuts and put
back in the oven for 15 mins until the top is
brown and bubbling.
This is a meal in itself and needs nothing to
accompany it, although some broccoli or a
green salad wouldn’t go amiss.
Chicken Kiev /Serves 4
4 chicken breasts – boneless & skinless
75g unsalted butter
2 cloves garlic – crushed
½ lemon – zested
2 tbsp parsley – chopped
½ tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
75g fl our – add a tsp paprika (optional)
2 eggs – beaten
150g breadcrumbs – add parmesan (optional)
Sunfl ower oil for shallow frying
Method
First make the garlic butter. Mix together the butter,
garlic, lemon zest, parsley, salt & pepper. Place in cling
fi lm, shape into a cylinder & freeze for about 20 mins.
Meanwhile get 3 shallow bowls ready. One with fl our,
one with beaten egg & one with breadcrumbs. Heat
oven to 200°C. Then prep the chicken. The aim is to
stop the garlic butter leaking out while the chicken is
cooking. You can google YouTube videos on how to
do it. I used a really sharp knife and made a thumb
size pocket in the thick end of the breast. Be careful
not to break through the bottom. Once the garlic
butter is hard, slice it and use it to stuff the cavity
in the breast. Use cocktail sticks to seal shut. Then
toss the breast in fl our, then egg, then breadcrumbs,
making sure they are well covered.
Heat the sunfl ower oil in a frying pan until a little
crumb sizzles. Fry chicken for 3 mins on each side,
until golden. Transfer to a baking tray lined with
greaseproof paper. Bake in oven for 20 mins or until
cooked through. Hopefully the butter will still be inside
the breast. If you get any leakage simply spoon back
over the breast to make it even crispier. Delicious
served with a green salad and new potatoes.

WIN A PRIVATE FALCONRY EXPERIENCE
for you and your friends and family
Step into the tranquil surroundings
of Thoresby Park and experience
nature at first hand. Grasp an
unforgettable experience and
knowledge as you delve deeply
into the remarkable world of
Birds of Prey. From Bluebell, the
beautiful and large Great Grey Owl
to Tilly, the small but boisterous,
Kestrel - the team at Hawkeye
host a remarkable and exclusive
experience with their wide range
of birds.
Hawkeye Falconry UK have cared
for birds, both large and small
for over 30 years now. Originally
based in Shropshire, near Ludlow,
the team expanded around 10
years ago to form a second
location, in Nottinghamshire. The
team focus on the conservation of
birds and also provide educational,
entertaining displays at some of
the largest events in the UK.
At the start of the covid pandemic,
like all suppliers and traders
on the show circuit, the diary
cleared of events and did look
sparse. Therefore the team
contacted Thoresby Park, near
Ollerton, to see if they would be
happy for Hawkeye to undertake
experiences. The aim was to
keep the birds enthused with
excitement, to meet and fly to
members of the public, as well as
flying daily at the teams base. Due
to the amazing feedback gathered,
the team are now permanently
undertaking experiences at
Thoresby, in addition to attending
the usual calendar of events.
Alistair, who runs the experiences
at Thoresby, undertakes exclusive
sessions with his personal team of
raptors. The experiences vary in
itinerary and are pre-booked only.
Usually they are undertaken in a
small group of guests with multiple
opportunities to fly the birds.
For a more special encounter,
Private and Family Experiences are
available, meaning the birds are
there just for you. Photography
Workshops are also undertaken
for budding photographers, to
learn a wide range of photography
skills. For the more experienced
photographer, the day provides an
opportunity to refine abilities such
as high-speed photography.
LICORICE PIZZA
NIGHTMARE ALLEY
To say I was excited for Licorice Pizza
would be an understatement. Paul
Thomas Anderson is my favourite
director of all time, so to say that this
film still surpassed my expectations is a
miracle. This film is the director’s loving
ode to San Fernando Valley, where he
grew up and set many of his earlier
works. Much like Quentin Tarantino’s
‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’,
this film does not really have much
of a conventional plot structure to
speak of. It moves at a very odd pace
as it shows scenes with seemingly no
greater place in the narrative beyond
enhancing the characters and themes
of the film, which is exactly why I love
it. Where most directors would have
a very clear-cut plot, this film has a
sprawling, episodic feel that allows it
to relish in the nostalgic atmosphere
present throughout the entire runtime.
Yet it always maintains this dark
undercurrent, something that drives
the two leads together and led me
to further empathise with both main
characters. This was arguably my
favourite new release in years and I
suggest everybody go and watch it!
Writer: Sam Leary 10/10
Nightmare Alley is a visually stunning and
passionately performed return to cinemas for the
director of Pacific Rim, Hellboy and Crimson Peak,
Guillermo Del Toro.
Unfortunately, that is where it ends.
This slick neo-noir follows Stanton Carlisle (Bradley
Cooper) as he escapes a mysterious past straight into
the macabre wonders of a ‘freak-show’. He ingratiates
himself and propels himself onward into troubled
success.
Del Toro excels at crafting a rich, artfully crafted world
that pulls you in, and yet that shiny, art deco facade
is easily chipped. Nightmare Alley is all style and no
substance. It relies on its incredible cinematography
and production design, leaning heavily on fervent
performances from Cooper and Cate Blanchett.
They embody their flawed, unlikeable characters
with an easy authenticity, yet Rooney Mara (Girl with
the Dragon Tattoo) is left will very little to get her
talented teeth into.
Our circus of antagonists blunder from one plot point
to another, with very little in the way of story, never
mind a genuine emotional payoff in the finale. It’s
heavy on metaphors and foreshadowing, preferring
an arthouse ‘show don’t tell’ approach to verbal
exposition, but doesn’t give enough to draw any real
conclusions from.
You’re left guessing at what you’ve just watched; you
probably did just enjoy the visual feast, yet are left
with the slightly bitter aftertaste of wood alcohol.
No, No, No. Not that kind of tale!!!
I’m talking about dogs in the bedroom…something
that was never on my wish list. My bedroom was
my sanctuary, whereas Gary was all for sharing. It’s
a personal choice and I know some of you will be
horrified at the thought, while others wonder what
all the fuss is about. Anyhow, I was overruled and
now share my bedroom (and King size bed) with
three hairy, annoying and often smelly males.
The dogs do have their own beds – and they usually
start the night sleeping in them. But once we’re
fast asleep, with the stealth of a cat burglar, they
climb onto the bed. Quite often one of us will wake
up unable to move our legs. After establishing that
we’re not paralysed from the waist down, we try and
shift them. No matter how much you try they won’t
budge. How they become twice the weight at night
is a mystery.
Just to be clear, they are not allowed actually in the
bed. Come on, we do have some standards! So how
is it that when I get a rare opportunity to actually
stretch my legs out, all I can feel is grit? Having
sand between my toes when I’m not on a beach isn’t
great.
To be fair, 80% of the time they are no problem.
They find a gap, get in it and everyone sleeps
happily ever after. Apart from when they don’t.
That’s when the fun starts.
It becomes a battle of the wills. Who can fake sleep
the longest and ignore the scratching at the door,
the tippy tappy claws as they trot around the room,
the paws on the arms, the quiet barking that gets
louder and louder.
The
Bedroom
Tale
To be fair, I am pretty good at it and usually win.
Fake snoring and a bit of sleep talking usually
does the trick. I can hear Gary huffing and puffing
and eventually, because he is basically a kind and
conscientious pet owner and I am not, he gets up
and takes them down to the garden.
The finale to my performance is to act really
surprised the following morning when Gary is
moaning and cussing. Like you didn’t hear a thing…
As for romance, forget it. Having a hairy mutt giving
you evils is about as big a passion killer as you can
get. Not always a bad thing…
Now let’s talk about bones. Raw, bloody, grotty
bones. We used to give the dogs the occasional
bone as a treat. A normal dog would take his bone
off and spend hours gnawing away at it in doggy
bliss.
Not Herbie. He has no idea what to do with it, so
he panics and buries it outside. Then hours later it
turns up. Under Gary’s pillow. Raw meat, caked in
soil. Who wouldn’t want that waiting for them when
they go to bed?
We do like to have the odd weekend away in a dog
friendly cottage. The only problem is that often
these little places only have a double bed – so by
the end of the night one of us has usually rolled
off the edge and the other one feels like they have
gone ten rounds with Tyson Fury. The dogs are fine
though. Well rested and raring to go. And the way
they look at you…like, what’s all the fuss about??
Just tickle my belly and stop moaning.
microchipping your cat is to
become mandatory
by Scarsdale Vets
Under new rules which are due to come into force
in England, microchipping your cat will become a
legal requirement, just as it is for dogs.
Not only does it mean that cats are more likely to
be reunited with their owners quickly if they go
wandering off, or become injured, but it also helps as
a deterrent to cat theft.
Cats that aren’t microchipped aren’t traceable so
it’s harder to reunite them with their owners. If their
owners can’t be found, they may have to go to a
rescue centre.
Cats will have to be microchipped by the time they are
20 weeks of age. A microchip is a tiny chip inserted
using a needle under the skin between the shoulder
blades. For most cats, it will just feel like an injection.
Microchips can be inserted by vets or nurses and the
unique numbers are stored on a central database.
The chips cannot usually be felt under the skin.
However, they may very occasionally migrate or fall
out, so vets will check the chip regularly by scanning
the cat.
If your cat is not already microchipped, we strongly
recommend that you make an appointment to get this
done as soon as possible.
You can call your local vet or our Langley Mill practice
on 01773 304914 for more information or to book
your appointment now.
87% of people GIVE UP!
It’s a different world we live in these days,
self-care is something we MUST prioritise.
From one day to the next our plans can quickly
change. Restrictions, rules and guidelines are
regularly changing.
It makes it extremely hard to plan an approach
you feel is within your control when things are
forever being changed. It can be overwhelming
and this in turn can lead us to say “why bother?”
I’ve spent over a decade in the fitness industry
and I’ve never seen such uncertainty from people
in how to make their health a priority.
Sabotage
Something you might not be aware of, yet
it happens without us realising... yes, the
unforgiving nature of self-sabotaging.
Having fun, freedom and the ability to make
future plans is what we thrive on.
We get in shape for a holiday, a wedding or
just to feel good in summer while we are out
and about. But none of those things are now
guaranteed. We all live in a world of massive
uncertainty, so a lack of self-care has become
the norm for many of us.
Unmonitored drinking, plenty of fast food and
takeaways, box-set after box-set. With the
mentality… I’ll sort it out when life’s back to normal.
For now, this is our normal, and looking after
ourselves should be right up there as a number
one priority.
What To Focus On
Self-care means looking after our mind, body and
energy. Here are some tips;
1. Create something or do something monthly
for yourself.
2. Look after your nutrition (recipe provided to try).
3. Move daily, it doesn’t need to be vast amounts.
Just make an effort to move.
4. Read or listen to something daily that helps
your mind grow.
5. Get enough sleep, team “no sleep” doesn’t
work for your body or mind.
6. Drink your water, yes even if you don’t like to,
it’s needed...
7. Limit social media! Take regular breaks.
8. Speak with someone if you’re struggling. Too
many suffer in silence.
If all of this sounds overwhelming to you, PLEASE
find me on any of your social media platforms
under @CoachAndyJames. I share information
that helps in all of these areas, whether you need
a little support or inspiration.
Until next time, take care
of yourself. Don’t fall into
the 87% of those who
give up or lose their way
in 2022. Remind yourself
of what you wanted from
this year, then go chase it
down.
you need me…
age uk nottingham &
nottinghamshire is
providing fraud & scams
support to older people
by Age UK Nottingham & Nottinghamshire
Age UK Nottingham & Nottinghamshire has
launched a new scams prevention and support
programme for older people in Nottinghamshire.
The programme, funded by Lloyds Banking Group,
will help to prevent older people from falling for
scams by increasing their knowledge and confidence
to recognise and deal with attempted scams. It will
also provide support to older fraud victims recovering
after an incident.
Older people can be particularly vulnerable to fraud
and scams, which can have a serious emotional and
financial impact, and can damage quality of life and
wellbeing for many.
Sophisticated scams have been on the rise during the
pandemic with criminals devising even more ways to
target those they believe to be vulnerable. This means
it’s even more vital to support those that may be at
greater risk.
Programme, please contact the Safe & Sound
How police keep thousands safe on nights out
From dealing with drunken fights
to hen parties asking for a ‘selfie’,
policing Nottingham’s night-time
economy swings and fluctuates like no
other shift.
One minute officers find themselves
engaging with excited groups on a fun
night out. The next they are bundling a
suspect into the back of a police van
following a violent incident at a nearby bar.
They are long shifts – 8pm to 6am on a
Saturday night – and the all-embracing
aim of the policing teams is to ensure
people can enjoy a safe night out.
Occasionally this will require taking
someone into custody. But most of the
time officers will simply be patrolling
the streets, engaging with revellers and
providing help and assistance where
needed.
It’s why Sergeant Richard Tiernan, of the
city centre neighbourhood policing team,
enjoys policing the night-time economy.
“Ultimately it’s policing in its purest form,”
he said. “You’re out there and doing
what you joined up for, which is keeping
people safe.
“People have perceptions of what
policing the night-time economy is like
but you do get some rewarding jobs. The
other night we talked someone down
from the roof of a car park who was
having a mental health crisis.”
An estimated 40,000 people descend
on Nottingham every weekend to
enjoy the city’s nightlife and a mix of
Nottinghamshire Police teams are
tasked with keeping them safe.
Working to a rota, the weekend nighttime
team consists of up to 15 police
constables, two sergeants and one
inspector, but there are also response
officers, armed officers and the dog unit
on standby, ready to deal with any major
incidents.
Managing the night-time economy
involves a huge amount of planning
and Nottinghamshire Police works in
partnership with many organisations
including Nottingham City Council,
East Midlands Ambulance Service,
St John’s Ambulance, the University
of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent
University to keep revellers safe.
Police also work with door staff,
pub managers, street pastors and
community protection officers employed
by the council.
But regardless of how much planning
and work goes into policing the nighttime
economy, much will depend on
the weather gods. Rain means revellers
will go straight home, but dry weather
means they will remain in the city after
the pubs and clubs have closed.
Nottinghamshire Police is also
continuing to encourage local residents
to sign up to Nottinghamshire Alert so
they can have direct engagement with
the force and its partners around issues
that matter to them.
Rhodes Brothers and Sons Ltd by Maureen Newton
The Rhodes family was of long standing in Hucknall. In
1795 a Thomas Rhodes ‘stocking weaver’ was resident
on what was the corner of Station Road. “Established
in 1848” claims the firm but Henry Rhodes Hosiery
Manufacturer and Agent first appeared in a directory
in 1853 and was producing shawls and falls* in 1864.
No address was given in early records until 1876 when
Portland Road was listed, later it was Station Road and
eventually Bolsover Street.
This is the corner of Station Road and Portland Road
before the junction was improved
Living on Station Road in 1901 was Isaac Rhodes,
manufacturer of Shetland shawls, with his wife and
sons Harold age 11 and Henry age 4. Ten years later
to celebrate the 21st birthday of Harold an “interesting
gathering was held in the Public Hall” when Mr and
Mrs Isaac Rhodes entertained the employees of the
firm. A programme of songs and recitations had been
arranged. Mr Isaac Rhodes in acknowledging a vote of
thanks, expressed the pleasure in promoting the social
gathering. He stated that among those present – one
had served the firm over 50 years, three over 40 and
a number for varying periods from 20 to 30 years. He
hoped he might assume that there existed among
their employees a deeper bond than mere payment of
wages and preferred to call them friends. Among their
employees were two great grand daughters of the man
who made the first Shetland fall.
“About the year 1884 Mr. H. Rhodes introduced the
manufacture of Orenburg shawls; an imitation of the
knitting of the peasant women in the Caucasus and
Western Russia. So fine is this work that a shawl
measuring 2 yards square and containing from a
million to 1,300,000 loops and weighing less than 2 ½
ounces can be pulled through a finger ring.”
In 1889, when the Dyke of Portland married Miss
Winifred Dallas Yorke, the Rhodes brothers sent a
gift of a silk shawl to mark the occasion. A card went
with the shawl: Presented to Miss Dallas Yorke on her
marriage, with the best wishes of Messrs. Rhodes
Brothers (Manufacturers of Shetland goods) Tenants
on the Estate of His Grace the Duke of Portland.
Hucknall Torkard, Nottingham. June 1889. She
responded: Gentlemen, Pray accept my most grateful
thanks for the very beautiful present of a silk shawl. I
never saw one so fine before. I shall wear it with the
greatest pleasure. I hope soon to be able to tell the
donors in person how much gratification both the
gift and the kind thoughts have caused me. I remain
Gentlemen, Faithfully yours, Winifred Dallas Yorke.
Mr. Sidney Rhodes said “In the world market Hucknallmade
shawls and scarves were eagerly sought after;
due in some measure to the fact that for generations
perfection of workmanship had been insisted upon.
Years ago the bulk of overseas trade was with shawls
for Russia. Another item produced in countless
thousands for the American market was the fall; a wool
and silk covering for a babies face.”
Wilfred Allsopp of 22 Bolsover Street retired at the age
of 72 in 1956. He had joined Rhodes Brothers in 1926
as a hand frame knitter but previously he had worked
for 22 years at Hardy’s factory on Truman Street.
When Mr Bignall took over the company on Bolsover
Street he found many records left in the buildings and
deposited them at Nottinghamshire Archives Office in
1975. They range from sales ledgers, wage bills, credit
and debit accounts to photographs of family and of
workers. Due to Mr Bignalls thoughtfulness they are
there for you to see if you are interested in framework
knitting or any family members worked for Rhodes
Brothers.
This item has been taken from a very much longer
article in Hucknall Torkard Times dated March 2008,
Issue 46.
* In Shetland ‘falls’ were lacy veils used to cover babies
faces. Hucknall framework knitters were asked if they
could make similar items.
hucknall flying high
academy children highlight
water polution issues
by Hucknall Flying High Academy
big upgrades for ashfield
leisure centres
by Everyone Active
Children from Hucknall Flying High Academy have
been learning all about rivers in their Geography
lessons and it has prompted them to demonstrate
in Hucknall town centre, seeking action for cleaner
rivers in England and Wales.
Debbie Newton is Year 4 Teacher and she said, “The
driver for our enquiry is Geography and part of that
has been learning all about rivers, not only where the
rivers are but the terminology used to describe them.
As part of the learning, we have discovered facts like
0% of rivers in England and Wales are considered to
be clean.
“This has been taken to heart by our pupils and we
decided that we would like to raise awareness of the
issue with the people of Hucknall and see if we could
gather support for a petition which we can pass to our
local MP to seek change.”
Pupil Nancy Nwokoloh age 8 said “We are trying to
stop sewage pollution because CSO’s (combined
sewer overflows) are putting too much sewage into
our rivers. People are listening to us and lots of people
have stopped and signed our petition. We can then go
to our local MP and try to stop this.”
Pupil Amaya Kooner age 9 was taking signatures
from members of the public. “We have some leaflets
to help people to learn about the effects of pollution
and how river pollution is happening. Some pollution
is killing the fish and polluting our food as well as
harming the animals who eat the fish from the rivers.”
Achieving your exercise goals in Ashfield has
never been a more attractive prospect, thanks to
the transformation of leisure centres across the
district.
£22.5million has been invested in Lammas Leisure
Centre, Hucknall Leisure Centre and the new, state-ofthe-art
centre due to open later this year in Kirkby-in-
Ashfield – all run by Everyone Active in partnership
with Ashfield District Council.
Lammas has just launched an innovative TAGactive
Arena, which sits alongside a new soft play area,
bringing together the worlds of activity, gaming and
technology.
The ice rink has been refurbished and a spectacular
new 150-station fitness suite and new group cycling
studio are impressive upgrades.
Hucknall’s new 120-station gym, earth studio, indoor
cycling studio and main studio have proved hugely
popular with the community.
Kirkby will also feature outstanding facilities for all
ages and interests, including a swimming pool, splash
pad, sauna and steam rooms, a sports hall and a Clip
‘n Climb.
new highway code rules for 2022
Courtesy of Link Magazines
The Highway Code has received a refresh, with
a new set of rules coming into force from 29th
January 2022. As well as some 49 existing laws
having been updated, new rules will be introduced.
The changes are extensive and further information
is available on the website link located at the
bottom of this article. However, the key areas are
summarised below.
Hierarchy of road users
Previously The Highway Code stated all road users
should be considerate towards each other, applying
this principle to pedestrians and drivers equally. It
meant that equal responsibility was originally placed
on all road users for assuring the safety of others.
The new hierarchy places responsibility on road
users who could do greatest harm to others, and it
is with them that the greatest obligation to protect
the most vulnerable on the road now lies. Top of
the hierarchy are lorry drivers, cars, vans, buses and
motorcycles. But it should be noted that cyclists,
horse riders and horse-drawn carriage drivers have
a greater responsibility to reduce the danger posed
to pedestrians.
Pedestrian priorities at junctions
Prior to the rule change, road users would have given
way to pedestrians who have started to cross the
road into which they are turning.
Under the new rules priority must be given to
pedestrians who are waiting to cross the road, which
means that if you are about to turn into a road and a
pedestrian is waiting to cross, you should give way.
New rule for drivers and motorcyclists at junctions
The new rule states that when turning into or out of
a junction, drivers should not cut across the path of
any other road user, including cyclists, horse riders
or horse-drawn vehicles, if doing so would cause the
other road-user to slow down, stop or swerve.
Safe passing distances
An amendment to existing Rule 163 sets out safe
passing distances for drivers when overtaking
cyclists, motorcyclists, horse riders and those in
horse-drawn carriages.
Drivers must give at least a 1.5 metre space when
overtaking a cyclist at speeds of up to 30mph. More
space should be allowed when overtaking at speeds
of more than 30mph. Rule 72 establishes the right
for cyclists to ride in the centre of their lane, to
ensure that they remain visible.
When passing a pedestrian who is walking in the
road, drivers should allow at least two metres of
space and maintain a low speed.
Rule 213 has also changed and now states that on
narrow sections of roads, horse riders may ride in
the centre of the lane and drivers should allow them
to do so for their own safety, to ensure they can see
and be seen. Drivers should pass a horse at least 2
metres distance and at a slow speed.
In all cases, drivers will now have to wait behind
a motorcyclist, cyclist, horse rider, horse-drawn
vehicle or pedestrian and not overtake if it is unsafe
or not possible to meet these clearances. Extra
care should be taken in poor weather, including high
winds.
Spring Flowering
Favourites
After a long winter it’s
wonderful to walk around
my garden and see signs
of my spring flowering
favourites getting busy for
a wonderful show.
Ajuga, (common name, bugle)
has kept looking good through
the winter but now the rosettes
of leaves are looking fresh and
glossy and I’m just waiting for
the first short spikes of blue
flowers to emerge. These are
unassuming plants that spread,
noninvasively, by sending out
runners much like strawberry
plants do creating ground
hugging clumps. They do
well in some shade but aren’t
that fussy. My favourites are
the bronze-leaved types like
“Atropurpurea”, the darker
“Black Scallop” and the reddish
“Burgundy Glow.” The flower
spikes are short and neat about
6in / 15cm tall. Larger and
more impressive is “Caitlin’s
Giant”. Ajuga are easy to grow
and propagate as the runners
root easily. They don’t seem
to suffer from any pests or
diseases.
Another tough and
accommodating spring flowerer
is lungwort (Pulmonaria). The
name comes from the belief in
the past that the spotted leaves
of some species resembled
the inside of a lung. Another
common name, army and navy,
is given because the wild plants
bear both blue and reddish
flowers at once, harking back
to the military uniform colours
of the time. Whatever the
name, the flowers are loved
by early flying bees. The plants
grow in sun or part shade and
prefer moisture. They do seed
a bit and are best cut back
really hard after flowering
as the leaves can be tatty
and sometimes get a bit of
powdery mildew. They soon
grow fresh, healthy leaves after
this treatment. Good varieties
include the vivid “Blue Ensign”,
the paler “Opal” and the pink
flowered “Mawson’s Red” or
“Dora Bielefeld”. One of my
favourites is “Cotton Cool”,
with almost completely silvered
leaves that makes a wonderful
foliage plant through the year.
Another lovely spring-flowering
foliage plant is Brunnera, a
relative of borage and equally
good for bees. The clumps
of heart-shaped leaves are
crowned with forget-me-not
like blue or sometimes white
flowers. Modern varieties have
introduced incredible silvered
leaves, either netted with silver
lines as in “Jack Frost” (blue
flowers) and “Mr. Morse” (white
flowers) or almost entirely
silver like “Looking Glass”. They
are best cut back hard in early
summer to encourage fresh,
new leaves.
Spring in the perennial garden
is truly something worth
waiting for with lots of easy to
grow flowers to perk up your
plots and beautify your borders.
speed manual in the Fiat
500X Sport. This makes for
a far more engaging driving
experience.
When I first sit in the driving
seat it feels like a giant was in it
before me as I am sat very low
down and struggle to see out
of the windscreen. It doesn’t
take long to adjust the manually
operated seat to my liking.
The Fiat is refreshing and has a
character of its own. Externally it
is finished in a bright blue and the
designers have had a bit of fun
with its styling, setting it apart
from the bland competition. So
often these days cars look and
feel clinical but I like to see a
personality shine through and
the 500X has it in spades.
Previously I have been driving
a VW Tiguan that overall was
immensely irritating due to its
over sensitive touchscreen, the
fact that the heating and fan
were operated by scrolling and
the cruise control having a mind
of its own. I like the design of the
dashboard in the Fiat, which is
easy to operate and has a good
amount of buttons and switches,
scoring well with me. The Tiguan
is a competitor to the 500X and
although the Italian feels perhaps
a little less sophisticated, in
terms of ergonomics the Fiat
wins hands down.
Looking at the engine, I feel that
Italy has trounced Germany.
This fairly sizeable Fiat is a
mere 1.3 litre petrol. Yet it is
150bhp, travels from 0 to 60mph
in 9.1secs and has a top speed
of 124mph. It generates 156g/
km of CO2. It costs £28,785.
This compares to the VW Tiguan
R-Line which is a 1.5-litre
with the same bhp. It is 0.1 of
a second slower on the 0 to 60,
has a 2mph faster top speed
and travels 2 miles further on
a gallon. It generates 9g/km
of CO2 more than the Fiat and
costs over £4,000 extra but
then it does have a large glass
panoramic sunroof and a power
boot lid that the Fiat does not.
I take it for a spin to
Bedfordshire. Over the course of
the 115 mile journey the ride is
comfortable. It does feel smaller
than the Tiguan.
Watch the video review at www.testdrives.biz
The TomTom satnav is reliable
but try as we might we cannot
get it to talk to us. The cruise
control is not as sophisticated
either. The digital speed reading
vanishes on occasions, which
is a bit unsettling and the fuel
gauge drops far too quickly for
my liking. I then realise it only
has a 48 litre fuel tank, meaning
that it will travel about 300 miles
on a tank.
TAROSCOPES
Air signs
Libra, Aquarius, Gemini
(Queen of Swords, The Empress,
Five of Coins)
You are dealing with the echoes from a loss,
grief or painful event in your past, as shown
by the sad Five of Coins. Two approaches are
required. Firstly The Empress asks you to show
yourself love and compassion. Secondly, the
Queen of Swords asks you to review this old
event from a new perspective, a more logical
and rational POV. Take a life lesson, atone for
anything you’re sorry for and then cut ties with
it, release it into your past with a
fi nal farewell.
Fire signs
Leo, Aries, Sagittarius
(Knight of Wands, Two of Cups,
Ten of Coins)
Wands could be a new, sexy suitor (a Fire sign-
Leo, Aries or Sagittarius) or it could be a renewal
of interest in your current situation. The Two of
Cups and Ten of Coins reveal this relationship
could be your happy-ever-after and that the
discussions, moves, plans and dreams you share
and align on this month could be the platform
and foundation of a long and joyful future. If
you’re single, ask to receive the love you desire
and deserve - it just might happen!
Earth signs
Capricorn, Virgo,
Taurus
(The Emperor, The Fool, Ten of Cups)
A powerful phase of manifestation and
intention-setting with the domineering and
ambitious Emperor and the new beginnings
talisman The Fool.
You are taking control of an area of your life
and re-designing it to your liking. The Ten of
Cups shows it’s your love life under the lens.
Major changes are coming, and they’re of
your doing.
Water signs
Cancer, Pisces,
Scorpio
(Four of Cups, Ten of Wands,
Seven of Wands)
Burn out. That is what this trio of cards signal
you’re in danger of right now. Too much pressure,
too many demands, too much expectation, too
many asks. You’re fatigued and losing the will
and interest in doing any of what’s on your to-do
list. The Four of Cups shows this ~meh~ attitude,
the Ten of Wands is the too many burdens card,
and the Seven of Wands is the hen-pecking and
demanding nature of people and situations.
Lighten the load. Streamline your commitments.
Stop saying yes or offering to help. Conserve your
strength and rest.
