Pizza is a takeaway favourite for 

many and it is easy to see why. 

This versatile dish can be meaty or 

vegetarian and the golden yet gooey 

cheese that often engulfs pizza is 

truly delicious. 

Many early ‘pizzas’ are documented 

by various cultures. Essentially a 

flatbread with various toppings. 

Alongside this, the style has 

developed over the years, most likely 

starting with the focaccia, a flatbread 

that was well known as far back as 

Roman times. 

It is widely believed that the modern 

pizza, as we know it today, evolved 

from similar flatbread dishes in the 

18th and 19th century in Naples, 

Italy. Today we can easily enjoy a 

multitude of pizzas from the more 

traditional Neapolitan style pizza 

with its thin base, charred, light and 

chewy crust and rich tomato sauce 

to the Chicago style ‘deep dish’ pizza 

layered high with cheese, pizza sauce 

and, often, meaty toppings. 

Whichever style of pizza you enjoy, 

I am sure that you will like the 

familiarity of the flavours and textures 

that these recipes contain whilst also 

being surprised and intrigued by 

the variation on this popular, familiar 

classic.

Flatbread Frying 

Pan Pizza 

Serves: 4 

Cooking time: 30 minutes 

(including the dough 

preparation). 

400g plain flour, 

1/2 tsp salt, 

220ml warm water, 

4 tbsp vegetable oil, 

5 tbsp pizza sauce 

(see chicken pizza for recipe. 

Mozzarella & pizza toppings of 

choice). 

Method 

Place the flour & salt into a 

large bowl & slowly add the 

water mixing together with 

your hands. Add water until 

a dough is formed. Add the 

oil & knead for around 5 mins 

until the dough is soft. Leave 

the dough to rest for around 

10 mins. Divide the dough into 

4 balls and using a little flour 

roll into 4 thin pizza bases the 

size of a frying pan. Place the 

dough into the frying pan over 

a medium heat & top with the 

pizza sauce and toppings. Cook 

for 2 mins then place under 

the grill on high as close to the 

flame as you can for 3-4 mins 

until the mozzarella is golden 

and bubbling. 

Chicken Pizza 

Serves: 2 

Cooking time: 20 minutes 

2 chicken breasts 

mozzarella, 

pepperoni (or any toppings 

you like) 

For the pizza sauce: 

1 tin of chopped tomatoes 

2 cloves of garlic 

150g tomato purée 

1 tbsp granulated sugar 

1 tbsp mixed Italian herbs 

pinch of salt and pepper 

Method 

Butterfly the chicken breasts, 

not quite cutting all the way 

through. Place between two 

sheets of greaseproof paper 

& flatten with a rolling pin until 

around 1 to 2cm in thickness. 

Place on a baking tray into 

an oven on gas mark 5 for 

around 15 mins until cooked 

through. To make a pizza 

sauce, put tinned tomatoes, 

tomato purée, garlic, herbs, 

sugar & salt & pepper into a 

blender until smooth & well 

combined. (Freeze the left-over 

sauce). Place the cooked 

chicken breast into a frying pan 

& top with the pizza sauce, 

mozzarella & toppings of your 

choice. Grill on high for 3-4 

mins, getting the frying pan as 

close to the flame as possible. 

Remove when the cheese is 

golden & bubbling. Enjoy with 

coleslaw & potato wedges. 

Pizza Sauce 

Roasted Vegetables 

Serves: 4 Cooking time: 1 hour 

2 courgettes - sliced 

200g cherry tomatoes - halved 

3 peppers (green, yellow & red 

cut into strips) 

1 red onion cut into chunky 

wedges 

400g passata 

4 tbsp tomato purée 

2 tbsp vegetable oil 

3 cloves garlic - ¬crushed 

1 tbsp oregano 

1 tbsp basil 

1 tbsp granulated sugar 

1 tbsp parmesan 

125g mozzarella 

100g pepperoni slices 

Salt & pepper to taste 

Method 

Add the courgettes, tomatoes & 

peppers to a large roasting tin. 

Drizzle over the vegetable oil and 

season with salt & pepper. Mix 

well & roast for 20 minutes on gas 

mark 5. While the vegetables roast, 

mix together the passata, tomato 

purée, garlic, oregano, basil, sugar, 

salt & pepper, two thirds of both 

the mozzarella & pepperoni diced 

and 1tbsp finely grated parmesan. 

Mix well. Add the red onion to the 

vegetables, mix well & return to the 

oven for a further 20 mins. Remove 

the vegetables from the oven, mix 

through the pizza sauce & put into 

a large pie dish. Top with slices of 

pepperoni & mozzarella & place 

back into the oven for 15 mins. 

Place under the grill on a high heat 

until the mozzarella is golden & 

bubbling, around 5 mins. Enjoy!

3 Habits that will improve 

your health quickly 

Something I’ve been working on with our team 

since the start of the new year is how creating 

small habits can have a great outcome. 

I’m going to give you a quick rundown on how 

you can turn the tables, get back on track and 

see quick, positive results. 

SLEEP 

Yes, sleep…. it drastically affects so much more 

than just how tired you feel. 

We require 7-8 hours a night to optimally recover 

our bodies. 

Yet most of us get less than 6, due to social 

media, watching telly late into the evening or just 

having a poor bedtime routine. 

If you get 7-8 hours of actual, good quality sleep 

it’s not just your tiredness that you’ll see improve. 

You will be less stressed, your mood will be 

better and your brain will be sharper. There is also 

evidence that it can improve your overall health. 

NUTRITION 

The quality of what we put into our bodies is so 

important. It is so much more than simply eating 

what we fancy (although there is also a place 

for this!) 

As with sleep, you can change how well your 

body responds to food in a short time. The 

benefits of eating more mindfully can have many 

positive effects apart from just weight loss. 

Energy improves, skin improves, mood improves 

along with all kinds of good things that go off 

inside the body. 

If you were to change just 2 things for a 

MAXIMUM positive outcome that will change 

things within 7 days…. SLEEP and NUTRITION Serves are 2

What you need to do 

1. Place the mayonnaise, yogurt, tomato puree, green onions, curry 

powder and lemon juice in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper 

and mix well. Add in the chicken pieces and mix again until the 

chicken is well coated. 

2. Lay the lettuce leaves on 2 serving plates and divide the chicken

The importance of looking after your feet

Did you know that the average person 

walks about 100,000 miles in a 

lifetime? So it’s no wonder that most 

people experience foot problems at 

some point. 

Feet often get neglected but they are essential for keeping 

us mobile and independent, and there are several things we 

can do ourselves to look after our feet: 

• Check your feet regularly for cuts, sores or swelling. 

• Keep them clean and dry, especially between your toes. 

• Use a pumice stone to remove dry flaky skin. 

• Moisturise dry skin regularly to prevent cracks. 

But what happens when the problem is beyond self-care? 

A qualified Foot Health Practitioner (FHP) can help. They 

will have Diploma in Foot Health and be fully insured to 

treat the majority of general foot problems. 

As we age, it can be harder to reach, or even see, and our 

feet and toenails can become harder making them difficult 

to cut. Toenails can also become thickened. This may be 

down to poor fitting shoes, certain activities, or, in some 

cases, a fungal nail infection may have set in. An FHP can 

cut nails, reduce thickness and give advice on treating 

fungal infections. 

Corns are an inverted cone of hard skin caused by pressure 

that presses into the tissue below and can be very painful. 

Callus is also caused by pressure and can become a 

problem if left too long. An FHP can remove them with a 

scalpel and give you advice on how to avoid them in the 

future. 

Other foot problems, such as verrucas, which are caused 

by a virus, and ingrowing toenails, which often occur due to 

incorrect nail cutting can also be treated by an FHP.

Nottinghamshire stage of tour of britain announced 

by Nottinghamshire County Council 

The eagerly anticipated Nottinghamshire stage 

of this year’s Tour of Britain cycle race will 

once again start in West Bridgford and finish in 

Mansfield. 

It’s the third time the showpiece event will take place 

in the county and follows the hugely successful 

staging of the race in 2017 and 2018. 

This year’s race returns to Nottinghamshire on 

Thursday 8 September and will see the fifth stage 

begin on Central Avenue in West Bridgford and end 

on Chesterfield Road South in Mansfield. 

It will pass through several towns and villages in the 

county, including East Leake, Radcliffe-on-Trent, 

Calverton, Southwell, Retford and Worksop – as well 

as take competitors along the recently-opened £49 

million Colliery Way road (Gedling Access Road). 

The 190km route – approximately 118 miles – will 

also take in key county landmarks and attractions 

such as world-famous cricket ground Trent Bridge, 

the legendary Sherwood Forest and popular tourist 

attraction Clumber Park. 

A global television audience of millions will watch the 

world-famous race, with the Nottinghamshire stage 

attracting 250,000 spectators in 2018 to make it the 

largest sporting event in the county’s history. 

It led to our area enjoying an economic boost, 

with £3.9 million being spent by participants and 

spectators on accommodation, food and drink and 

shopping. 

The Nottinghamshire stage four years ago also 

started in West Bridgford and finished in Mansfield. 

Councillor John Cottee, Chairman of 

Nottinghamshire County Council’s Communities 

Committee, said he was looking forward to seeing 

thousands of people lining the route to cheer on the 

competitors. 

He said: “The return of the Tour of Britain is fantastic 

news and today’s announcement detailing the route 

heightens the sense of anticipation as we prepare to 

welcome a world class field of riders and teams to our 

wonderful county.” 

“As a council, we’re delighted that we’ve been able to 

bring the Tour of Britain back to Nottinghamshire and 

I’m looking forward to working with our district and 

borough council partners to ensure it’s going to be the 

best stage of the race.” 

The Tour of Britain starts in Aberdeen on Sunday 4 

September and finishes on the Isle of Wight seven 

days later – and, in addition to our county, passes 

through the Scottish Borders, Redcar & Cleveland 

and North Yorkshire, Gloucestershire and Dorset. 

Cycling’s premier road event in this country will 

feature the world’s top teams and riders, alongside 

the best British-based cyclists, with a field 

comprising of Tour de France winners, Olympians 

and world champions. 

Nineteen teams and 114 riders are currently 

scheduled to take part in the race – including 

Mansfield’s Ross Lamb and Ollie Peckover, of 

Ruddington (pictured), who compete for the Ribble 

Weldtite Pro Cycling team. 

Live coverage of the race is shown daily in the UK 

on ITV4, in addition to around the world. The Tour of 

Britain is part of the UCI ProSeries, making it one of 

the most prestigious sporting events in the sport’s 

global calendar.

Bearded Irises: 

The Ultimate Show-stoppers 

Every May and June I am 

bewitched by the sheer 

flamboyance and beauty 

of the bearded irises in the 

borders of gardens I visit. 

The large, showy blooms 

come in many colours and 

it’s a shame that we don’t 

have “smelly-vision” as 

most are sweetly scented. 

They are called “bearded” 

because of the line of hairs on 

the lower petals. These beards 

are often in a contrasting 

colour to the petal and act like 

runway lights to guide bees to 

the nectar and pollen. 

With bearded irises it is 

important to give them the 

right conditions if you want 

them to thrive and flower. 

They grow from a knobbly 

rhizome – a sort of modified 

root. These need to be planted 

so that they are not completely 

buried – maybe halfway up 

their thickness. They like a 

sunny spot: this year’s sun 

makes next year’s flowers. The 

ground must be free draining: 

add grit below the rhizomes 

if your soil is moist and forget 

about growing them if it’s 

boggy – there are plenty of 

other types of iris you can 

grow! 

You can plant pot-grown 

bearded iris at any time but 

often nurseries supply them 

bare rooted as they are difficult 

to keep nice in a pot. There are 

many hundreds of varieties in a 

range of heights and colours to 

choose from. 

The flowering season starts in 

late April with the very dwarf 

varieties. These are less than 

16in or 40cm tall and best 

suited for a rockery. Next come 

the intermediates (16in – 28” 

/ 40-70cm) that flower from 

early May. Then later in May the 

tall, bearded types (28-48” / 

70-120cm) and these have the 

showiest flowers. 

After flowering you can cut the 

flower stems off as close to 

the rhizome as possible using a 

sharp, sterile knife since leaving 

them on can cause rotting of 

the plants.

I sit inside the VW Tiguan 

where even the heating is 

operated through swiping. 

Save me. You have to be 

precise with this stuff 

otherwise it just won’t work. 

This is a problem when 

driving because you really 

have to focus on this rather 

than devoting 100 per cent 

attention to the road. And 

that is not good. My wife has 

to deal with it for me. There 

is such a thing as driving 

without due care and 

attention, you know. 

In Hampshire alone deaths caused 

by drivers using mobile phones 

include a school crossing patrol 

and a cyclist, the latter happened 

to be one of my wife’s students. 

We all do well to remember that 

cars are killing machines. The 

more basic the vehicle the better it 

is, I believe. 

Inside the nearly £33,000 Tiguan 

I curse how technology continues 

to take us all over while Ken Dodd 

sings Happiness, oh happiness. 

It’s the first time I’ve actually 

listened to this song all the way 

through; I really should have 

done that before I spoke to him a 

few years ago. I smile. How true, 

that success in life should be 

measured by happiness instead 

of money. 

There are some good things about 

this sports utility vehicle. The 

wheel base is wide enough to 

evade the irritating speed humps 

on some of the local roads to my 

dentist... The raised height is 

helpful and it’s an attractive car 

from the outside helped by the 

chrome edged windows although 

this doesn’t quite match up on the 

passenger side. There’s a large 

panoramic glass sunroof; the roof 

slides open above the front seats 

and this roof is similar to the one in 

the £201,000 Bentley Flying Spur. 

The 7-speed DSG automatic can 

be driven like a manual thanks 

to paddleshifts either side of the 

steering wheel. But for me this 

isn’t comparable to a traditional 

manual; it’s lazy driving that takes 

away the fun of making those gear 

changes. 

This 1.5-litre VW returns 42mpg 

over the course of the test. The 

Tiguan’s numberplate ends in 

BFF. Best Friend Forever my 

daughters reliably inform me. No, 

unfortunately it is not for me.

struggle with being told that we 

must behave in a certain way 

and then discover that few are

actually doing so. This goes for 

both Covid and the environment. 

There are petrol engines that 

are really efficient and surely 

these are the ones that should 

be being used in cars now. If 

it is not possible to have both 

performance and efficiency then 

surely manufacturers must make 

the right choice.

A Bonfire At Burton

On June 6 1838, Samuel Palin of Burton 

Joyce, along with his father John, was on the 

estate adjacent to the river watching the game 

birds in amongst the trees. 

While they were so occupied, William Marshall 

(aged 20) was walking down the lane adjacent 

to where they were standing. William proceeded 

along the lane to a load of timber piled up 

nearby. This wood was the property of Trent 

Navigation, who had staked it there some 18 

months before to allow it to be seasoned by the 

weather before using it along the river. 

Samuel watched William as he approached 

the pile and saw him proceed to climb up onto 

the stack. In this position, he removed several 

pieces from the top. Samuel now saw flames 

coming from the pile of timber and called to 

ask what he was doing. William climbed down 

off the stack and ran away, leaving the wood 

burning. 

Giving chase, Samuel caught William, who 

shouted; “dam your eyes if you tell on me I shall 

be transported”. Damaging property in this 

way had been a hanging offence but was now 

still punishable by transportation to Australia. 

Samuel asked why he had set the wood on fire, 

to which William replied that he was drunk and 

could not put the fire out. All three men then sat 

on the bank and watched the fire, as they had 

no way to extinguish the blaze. 

The next morning John Palin reported what had 

happened to Mr Padley and Mr John Hopkin, 

the agent for the Trent Navigation Company, 

on whose land the fire had been started and 

property destroyed. William was then arrested 

and sent to jail to await trial. 

The matter came to court seven months later, in 

January 1839. At the trial, William was defended 

by Mr Whitehurst, who objected to the charge 

of William setting fire to the wood, as neither of 

the witnesses had actually seen him start the 

fire. His objection however was overruled, so Mr 

Whitehurst then went on to address the jury at 

some considerable length. 

He stated that the prisoner was a simple, 

harmless, inoffensive man and that he regretted 

that the prisoner should have been held in 

custody and rendered liable for these offences 

punishable with possible transportation for 

life. He would not admit that the prisoner was 

guilty in any way. Several witness were called 

to vouch for William’s good character, including 

Wilson Plant, Thomas Hardy, William Foster, Mr 

Widdowson and Mr Slater, all local to Burton 

Joyce. 

John and Samuel Palin then gave their 

evidence. Both gave very similar accounts of 

the events as they unfolded. Neither could say 

for certain that they had seen William start the 

fire or how he could have done it. 

Although the jury verdict was guilty, Mr 

Whitehurst and the others witnesses must 

have carried some weight, as William was not 

transported for life, as would be expected, but 

received 12 months hard labour and 3 months 

solitary confinement. 

This was a very mild sentence at the time for a 

case of this type.

your guide to choosing a stairlift

We know the 

decision to have a 

stairlift installed 

is often a very 

difficult one to 

make, but when 

compared with 

the alternative of 

moving, or only 

living on one level 

of their home, 

many people have 

found a stairlift to 

be their preferred 

solution. 

The idea of deciding which stairlift is right for you, 

and having it fitted, can be a very daunting one so, to 

guide you through the process, these simple steps 

should be helpful. 

• Firstly, approach your local authority – you may be 

eligible for a grant to help towards the cost. 

• Obtain two or three different quotes and think 

about choosing a local supplier who would be able 

to get to you quickly in the event of a breakdown. 

It’s also very important to check reviews on Google 

and other reputable sites. 

• Arrange a survey – most companies can give you 

a price over the phone and you should NEVER feel 

pressured into making a decision. 

• All stairlifts are fitted to the stairs rather than the 

wall of the staircase, so you needn’t worry about 

having to sort out any decorating work. They are all 

powered from the mains and come with a battery 

backup in case of a power failure. 

• Do you want a new, reconditioned or rental 

stairlift? Most companies offer a range of options 

to suit your budget and needs. 

• Do you need a straight or curved one? If your 

stairs go straight up with no bends, you need a 

straight stairlift. If your staircase has a bend, you 

will need a curved one. 

• Check out the aftercare and warranty – ask if your 

supplier has a 24hr call out and what the response 

time would be. 

• A written quotation will be provided for the cost 

of the stairlift, including installation. You may be 

exempt from paying VAT, so check if you’re eligible. 

• Once you have decided on your preferred supplier, 

the installation process is very simple. Most 

stairlifts can be installed within 5 working days 

(some even next day) and the installation takes 

between 1-4hrs depending on the type. You will be 

given a thorough demonstration once it’s fitted and 

the engineer won’t leave until you are comfortable 

using it.

artspeak - arts & cultural 

activities for the over 60’s

ArtSpeak is 

a Big Lottery 

funded project 

in and around 

Nottingham for 

people aged 60 

and above. We 

organise and 

run a varied 

programme of arts and cultural activities providing 

opportunities to explore, learn and discover new 

skills and interests, meet like-minded people and 

socialise. 

We run workshops covering many art forms 

including photography, life drawing, painting, craft 

and mixed media. We also have a programme of 

performance arts including monthly music improv 

evenings, a theatre group and dance company. We 

work in partnership with local arts venues to provide 

insightful walkthroughs of their latest exhibitions, 

sparking conversations around art, artists and the 

broader cultural offer in the City. We have an outdoor 

walks programme, ArtSpeak Ambles with themes of 

history, nature, and mindfulness, and organise group 

visits to venues further afield to inspire and expand 

our arts offer. 

Some of our activities are free and when we do 

charge the fee is subsidised. Becoming an ArtSpeak 

member is free and once you’ve signed up, you’ll 

receive discounted rates, and get instant programme 

announcements and updates via email. 

A lot of our activities take place at our Centre, 25 

Prospect Street, Radford. We link into other events 

across Nottingham, and attend things as a group

Children and young people with additional needs in 

Nottinghamshire risk losing out on vital services 

if more paid carers are not recruited to help with 

their essential care. 

FTM Dance is a provider of respite care through 

performing arts classes, offering support for families 

of children and young adults with additional needs 

and diverse abilities across Nottinghamshire. Its 

unique proactive care model not only gives families 

much needed respite time but their fun dance and 

drama sessions promote physical and social skills 

and enable creative expression, enhancing wellbeing 

and promoting independence for the participants. 

It currently supports over 100 children across the 

county and employs carers for its creative classes 

but needs more to support increasing local need. 

Leanne Evans, FTM Dance Founder and Director, said: 

“We hear about the crisis in care sector recruitment daily 

in the news and it’s a critical problem. It’s not just care 

homes for the elderly that are lacking vital support. Day 

services, respite care and many more care environments 

also urgently need additional paid people.”

global sounds for summer family festival...

International folk, roots and acoustic artists 

from the USA, Canada, Europe and Australia will 

grace the stages of this summer’s 15th Gate To 

Southwell Festival in Nottinghamshire (from 

Thursday July 14 to Sunday July 17). 

While last September’s event was a great success 

– named “the best live event of 2021” by the 

prestigious RnR music magazine - everyone felt 

the absence of global acts due to pandemic travel 

restrictions. But now leading French Canadian band, 

Le Vent Du Nord (who were a big hit at the festival 

in both 2012 and 2017) will return to perform again 

while celebrating 20 years on the road. Oregon’s 

finest contemporary folk duo Fellow Pynins will also 

be appearing, and Southwell warmly welcomes back 

the much-loved American banjo and doghouse bass 

marital combo of Truckstop Honeymoon. 

Katherine Priddy (pictured above), one of the rising 

stars of the thriving British folk music scene, is 

among the latest names added to this year’s line-up 

in July, alongside two of the best bands currently 

on the live circuit – eight-strong folk rockers Merry 

Hell and Celtic punkers Black Water County. They’ll 

join headliners including the celebrated West Coast 

Scots trio, Peat & Diesel, Irish legends Dervish, top 

bluesman Ian Siegal and Australian vocal tour-deforce 

The Spooky Men’s Chorale. 

Kicking off the festival on July 14th, Thursday will 

definitely be Blues Night, headlined by “national 

treasure” singer, songwriter and star guitarist Ian 

Siegel. He’s a nine-times British Blues Awards 

winner, a three-times European Blues Awards 

winner, and he’s twice won Mojo’s blues album of the 

year - the magazine branded Siegal “the cleverest 

writer and most magnetic performer of Blues in 

the UK”. Alongside Siegel, Southwell welcomes the 

Daniel Smith Blues Band led by one of the UK’s best 

boogie woogie and blues pianists. 

With more acts still to be announced, from closer 

to home there’ll be the footstompin’ fiddle-driven 

rhythms of Noble Jacks, with top singer songwriters 

such as folk roots veteran Pete Morton and 

Humberside star Katie Spencer (promoting her 

poetic new album ‘The Edge Of The Land’). Plus 

there’s the folk Americana of Fritillaries (formerly 

Rainy Day Woman) who made such an impact at 

GTSF last September, Helian (the new five piece 

from the Leeds Conservatoire) and also Huson- 

Whyte, Southwell’s own talented duo, who’ll be 

among the class acts performing on four live music 

stages over four days. 

Building on last year’s success, there’ll be four live 

music stages, plus on-site camping, glamping, street 

theatre, poetry, comedy, artisan food, great traders, 

cask ales, campfire sessions, morris dancing and 

ceilidhs. 

As always, the Gate To Southwell Festival promises 

to be a fantastic event for the whole family with

Storytelling, White Post Farm, Forest School, Kids

Widely considered one of the most charismatic 

performers on stage, Steve Harley continues to 

play to sold-out venues across the UK and Europe. 

On May 7th Steve will be playing Nottingham’s Albert 

Hall with his Acoustic Band. Steve has been playing 

live shows around the world for over 45 years and 

the thrill of another night in another place to another 

audience has not dimmed at all. 

For Steve, life on the road is more than just a job: it is 

almost his life’s blood. 

“We have real adventures on tour, “says Steve. “I’ve 

seen the Northern Lights, the Midnight Sun and 

dozens of wonderful galleries, museums and great 

cities, all on my down-time. I have a great life as a 

Wandering Minstrel!” 

The acoustic sets for 2022 will include songs from 

the new CD, plus a selection from the vast and 

eclectic Harley Songbook. Mr Soft, Judy Teen,

At Bromley Library House, 

learn all about the early infamous

modern European witch-hunts 

(14 May). This presentation, 

based on current PhD research, 

compares ideas about the crime 

of witchcraft in early modern 

German and English media. 

Historian and author Dr John 

Woolf explores the history of the 

Victorian sideshow entertainment 

at the Theatre Royal (14 June), 

through the stories of the ‘freak 

performers’ who graced the 

boards of this popular form of 

entertainment. 

Dot To Dot Festival has 

established itself as the UK’s 

premier festival for unearthing 

the hottest new talent around, 

alongside established acts 

from all over the globe and it’s 

back for 2022 at various venues 

across the city (29 May).

Finally, after a two year wait, our trip to the Arctic 

Circle to see the Northern Lights had arrived. 

everything back in the case. Painful to watch. But 

less so with a mug of gin. 

After blowing the budget in Aldi on thermals, 

goggles (not used), waterproof gloves (not used) 

and balaclavas (not used), we were ready! 

Arriving at the airport, clocking the amount of 

luggage everyone was hauling through check-in, we 

started to panic that we had woefully under packed 

with our tiny little cases. 

Being organised, I had made a list, stuck to it, 

packed in 10 mins and was good to go. Gary, on 

the other hand, had been packing and unpacking 

his case for days, fretting over how many pairs of 

socks, base layers, undercrackers etc. to take. To 

vest or not to vest?? This is the dilemma I have to 

listen to pretty much every day, home or away. 

We were all-inclusive (apart from drinks, which 

turned out to be a slight problem as the hotel wine 

was expensive and the nearest licensed shop was a 

4 hour drive away). Thank goodness for the litre of 

gin we bought at Duty Free! 

Thankfully, Gary’s prediction of us having to choose 

from whale blubber baked or fried everyday turned 

out to be wrong. To be honest, it was like a full-time 

job keeping up with all the eating. It’s the only place 

I have ever been where eating dinner in your long 

johns is acceptable. 

After the packing/unpacking pantomime before 

we arrived, we were back on that tip everyday, with 

Gary umming and ahhing on how many layers to 

wear, how many pairs of socks to put on, whether to 

double vest, bla bla bla. Everything out of the case, 

Day one was a reindeer safari. 

Gary to me; “Take a picture of me and Roy.” 

Me; “Who’s Roy?” 

Gary; “The reindeer.” 

Me; “How do you know he’s called Roy?” 

Gary; “You just called him Roy, didn’t you? I 

assumed they had names like the donkeys at the 

seaside.” 

Me; “Errr no Gary, I said he’s a lovely boy.” 

Actually, his name was Urko, but that’s beside the 

point. He was Roy the Reindeer for the rest of the 

trip. And a hearing test at Specsavers has been 

booked. 

The snow shoe trek was next. Basically, you have 

two small skateboards strapped to your feet and 

the theory is that you stay upright and walk through 

the snow with ease. Of course, Gary’s shoes were 

broken, but Rory, our leader, said they would be fine. 

Easy for you to say Rory, you didn’t have to haul him 

out of a 7ft snow drift twice when the shoes came 

off! 

Our favourite trip was the snowmobile ride over a 

frozen lake. It was 11.30pm and -20 but we loved 

it. Until we got stuck and it took three people to get 

us back on track by which time my feet had literally 

lost all feeling, my hair had turned white (frost) and 

Gary could no longer see as the condensation on 

his glasses had frozen. Maybe we should have used 

the goggles after all… 

Oh and yes, we did see the Northern Lights and they 

were awesome!

Nottinghamshire leading the way on phone 

data analysis 

Police in Nottinghamshire are leading 

the way in the prompt analysis of 

mobile phone data belonging to victims 

and suspects. 

The Digital Forensics Unit was recently 

visited by Home Secretary Priti Patel who 

was briefed on their work. 

A recent investigation by Channel 4 News 

revealed a backlog of more than 20,000 

digital devices waiting to be examined by 

forces across England and Wales. 

Nottinghamshire Police, however, has 

just 31 phones, tablets and computers 

waiting to be examined which have all 

been triaged. 

This strong performance, the force says, 

is down to significant recent investment 

in specialist digital media and forensics 

officers, interns, graduate investigators, 

strict adherence to national proportionality 

guidelines, and the upskilling of other 

officers to examine devices linked to less 

serious offences. 

Detective Chief Inspector Les Charlton is 

responsible for Nottinghamshire Police’s 

digital media investigation teams. 

He said: “As technology has evolved 

so have the demands placed on police 

officers. Digital evidence now plays a 

significant role in the majority of police 

investigations and can be gathered from 

devices ranging from mobile phones to 

smart wearables. That creates a very 

significant demand that has to be managed 

effectively. 

“When somebody has been the victim of a 

crime – particularly a sexual offence – we 

absolutely understand that the investigative 

process can be extremely difficult and 

upsetting for them. 

“As police officers we have a job to do, 

but we want to do that job with as little 

additional upset to a victim as possible. We 

offer a bespoke same day and appointment 

service for phones to help victims. 

“We understand that mobile devices are 

actually a very big part of people’s lives. 

They are quite literally their link to the 

outside world – their friends and family 

– so we understand the importance of 

returning those devices to them as quickly 

as we can.” 

Thanks to the ongoing uplift in officer 

numbers, the force has been able to boost 

its digital forensic capability by more than 

50 per cent over the last two years. It has 

also implemented force-wide protocols to 

prevent a backlog of devices and it always 

prioritises victims of sexual assault. 

They, along with other victims of crime, 

consent to very limited examinations 

of their devices which relate only to 

the events immediately surrounding an 

offence. 

The force also adheres to best practice 

guidelines from the College of Policing 

about the prompt return of data and 

devices. Typically the force looks to return 

devices within 24 hours. 

Chief Constable Craig Guildford said: 

“Digital data has an increasingly vital role to 

play in our day-to-day work but we should 

never lose sight of the immense upset and 

inconvenience this can cause to victims. 

That’s why we have taken the decision to 

heavily and creatively invest in this area of 

our work over the last couple of years and 

why we will continue to do so the future.”

Artists are being invited to submit their work for 

the opportunity to be shown in the award-winning 

Harley Gallery, in Nottinghamshire. 

The Harley Open Exhibition is a biennial competition 

which attracts an impressive range of artists. 

Previous exhibitions have include work by well 

known names such as Olivier Leger, Chris Eckersley, 

Susan Isaac and Joanna Whittle - but entries are not 

restricted to established artists. 

Anyone can enter their work for consideration for 

the exhibition, whether you are professional or a 

hobbyist, experienced or just starting to make art, 

The Harley Gallery would love to see your work. 

The only restrictions are that artists should be from 

within 100 miles of the Gallery, and entries must be 

original, wall based art, made in the last 2 years. 

This year, the Gallery expects to show around 150 

artworks in the exhibition, and as an added bonus 

there are prizes which include a top prize of £2,000. 

Entries to the Open Exhibition can be submitted 

until 8 July on The Harley Gallery website, with a 

further ‘real-life’ round of judging taking place in 

early August. Entries cost £10 each, and artists can 

submit up to two artworks. 

The Harley Open Exhibition will be on show between 

6 August and 23 October. The Gallery is open 

Tuesday – Sunday, with free admission with free 

parking. 

A new swimming scheme has been launched by 

Gedling Borough Council to help people in the 

borough to be more active and enjoy swimming. 

The Swimming Passport scheme is open to Gedling 

residents aged under 16 and over 65. These age 

groups are able to swim at dedicated weekly sessions 

for free at Arnold, Calverton and Carlton Forum 

leisure centres. 

The Swimming Passport scheme was developed as 

part of the Gedling Borough Council’s priorities to 

improve the health and well-being of residents, as 

well as reduce health inequalities across the borough. 

Swimming has many physical and mental health 

benefits as well as being a vitally important life skill. 

Gedling Leisure centres have a 25 metre pool at both 

Arnold and Carlton Forum leisure centres, and an 18 

metre pool at Calverton leisure centre for swimmers 

to enjoy. 

One of the residents who will benefit from the new 

scheme is 91 year old swimmer, Arthur Beal (pictured 

above) who regularly attends Arnold Leisure Centre. 

Arthur will be saving around £120 per year if he 

attends the sessions created for the new scheme. 

Eligible residents will need a valid Gedling Leisure 

card to take part. Places on these sessions are 

limited so booking in advance is recommended and 

can be done online at gedling.gov.uk/swimmingpassports 

or by contacting the Arnold, Calverton or 

Carlton Forum leisure centres directly. 


New rivendell flying high 

academy nears completion

Rivendell Flying High Academy, the new school 

being built on the Rivendell housing development 

off the A612 Colwick loop road, is now nearing 

completion. 

In partnership with Nottinghamshire County Council 

and builders Persimmon Homes, The Flying High 

Partnership, who will be responsible for overseeing 

the running of the school, say it is on track to 

welcome its first pupils in September 2022. 

Nick Layfield, Operations Manager at The Flying 

High Partnership said, “The school will be ready to 

welcome its first ever pupils in September this year. 

Families can expect a building that will provide the 

optimum environment in which children can flourish 

and succeed in their education. It has been a fantastic 

watching the building take shape and we can’t wait to 

see it develop into a vibrant school serving this new 

community.” 

The school’s design is focused on enhancing 

children’s experience and education and boasts 

expansive outdoor spaces. Families who have an 

interest in securing a place for their child can find 

information on the Rivendell Flying High Academy’s 

website. 

Rivendell Flying High Academy will fill to 210 pupils 

as the development grows and in the first year will 

welcome admission applications for all year groups 

from Foundation 2 to Year 6, as well as nursery 

places. 

Choir member Magnus, sings NBC’s praises; 

“Nottingham Boys Choir is a fantastic place to learn 

to sing, to make friends and to have fun. 

I am 18 and later this year will be leaving NBC 

to take up a place at a university in London. No 

longer associating Wednesday evenings with choir 

rehearsals will be so strange; NBC has been a part 

of my life since I was 6 years old, and I will miss so 

many things about it. 

The annual pantomime trips (tickets funded by a 

generous benefactor), football kick-abouts in the 

local park, outings to trampoline centres and laser 

tag, have all been great fun and I have loved being 

part of a ‘club’ with other boys. But the singing is the 

thing I will miss the most. 

At NBC we sing everything from pop songs to 8-part 

15th century madrigals, exploring folk, classical, and 

other genres along the way. Our musical director, 

Matthew Burton, is so enthusiastic and he is an 

amazing singer too; his vocal range is phenomenal – 

he can demonstrate the treble parts, and power out 

the bass notes comfortably too! 

It’s going to be a sad day for me when I perform in 

my final concert with NBC, but I know the Choir will 

continue to thrive, and I look forward to attending 

NBC concerts in the future. New members are 

always welcome, and I promise you, it’s brilliant!”
