Get 

Stuffed! 

Stuffi ng has been around since at least 

Roman times. The cook book ‘Apicus 

de re Coquinaria’ has recipes for 

stuffi ng made from vegetables, herbs, 

nuts and offal and it was used to stuff 

chicken, pigs and even dormouse! 

Since the late 1800’s in America it is 

called ‘dressing’. This stems from the 

way it was cooked at Thanksgiving, 

outside the bird rather than in the cavity. 

Stuffi ng was also deemed too crude a 

term for the well to do. 

The great thing about stuffi ng is that 

you can stuff pretty much anything with 

pretty much anything! From chicken 

(see Kiev recipe opposite) to seafood 

and most vegetables. But also thinking 

outside the box you can hollow out 

a loaf of bread, stuff it and you have 

the perfect picnic food. It isn’t just for 

savoury fi llings either. You can stuff 

pancakes, cookies, cupcakes, apples 

and the list goes on... 

Stuffi ng as a method of cooking is used 

across the globe. From Greek stuffed 

vine leaves to Indian stuffed paratha to 

the Russian pirozhki (stuffed bread). If 

you think about it every country has a 

speciality that involves stuffi ng. How 

about a Cornish pasty? Or an Italian 

Calzone? Or a Japanese gyoza? We 

love to stuff everything! 

My absolute favourite has to be sage 

and onion. Not the dry stuff you get 

from a packet, but homemade with 

grated onion, dried sage, breadcrumbs, 

sausagemeat and an egg. I bake it in a 

dish and could eat it all day.

Stuff ed Squash with 

Blue Cheese /Serves 2 

1 butternut squash 

200g blue cheese – crumbled 

30g pine nuts – toasted 

2 echalion shallots – sliced 

1 tbsp thyme leaves 

250g sachet cooked rice/grains 

Salt & pepper 

Knob of butter 

Method 

Heat the oven to 200°C. Line a baking tray. 

Half the squash, scoop out the seeds and 

stringy bits. Score the fl esh and rub with 

olive oil. Season and put a knob of butter 

in the cavity of each half. Bake in oven for 

45 – 90 mins depending on the size of your 

squash. 

In a small pan with a splash of oil, slowly 

cook the onion until soft and slightly crispy. 

Allow to cool. 

Meanwhile – put 150g of the cheese in a 

bowl, along with 20g of the toasted pine 

nuts, the rice or grains. Add the cooled 

onion. Once the squash is soft, remove 

from the oven, scoop out most of the fl esh 

and add to the bowl. Mix well and check 

seasoning. Once well combined, spoon 

back into the squash shells. Top with 

remaining cheese and pine nuts and put 

back in the oven for 15 mins until the top is 

brown and bubbling. 

This is a meal in itself and needs nothing to 

accompany it, although some broccoli or a 

green salad wouldn’t go amiss. 

Chicken Kiev /Serves 4 

4 chicken breasts – boneless & skinless 

75g unsalted butter 

2 cloves garlic – crushed 

½ lemon – zested 

2 tbsp parsley – chopped 

½ tsp salt 

½ tsp black pepper 

75g fl our – add a tsp paprika (optional) 

2 eggs – beaten 

150g breadcrumbs – add parmesan (optional) 

Sunfl ower oil for shallow frying 

Method 

First make the garlic butter. Mix together the butter, 

garlic, lemon zest, parsley, salt & pepper. Place in cling 

fi lm, shape into a cylinder & freeze for about 20 mins. 

Meanwhile get 3 shallow bowls ready. One with fl our, 

one with beaten egg & one with breadcrumbs. Heat 

oven to 200°C. Then prep the chicken. The aim is to 

stop the garlic butter leaking out while the chicken is 

cooking. You can google YouTube videos on how to 

do it. I used a really sharp knife and made a thumb 

size pocket in the thick end of the breast. Be careful 

not to break through the bottom. Once the garlic 

butter is hard, slice it and use it to stuff the cavity 

in the breast. Use cocktail sticks to seal shut. Then 

toss the breast in fl our, then egg, then breadcrumbs, 

making sure they are well covered. 

Heat the sunfl ower oil in a frying pan until a little 

crumb sizzles. Fry chicken for 3 mins on each side, 

until golden. Transfer to a baking tray lined with 

greaseproof paper. Bake in oven for 20 mins or until 

cooked through. Hopefully the butter will still be inside 

the breast. If you get any leakage simply spoon back 

over the breast to make it even crispier. Delicious 

served with a green salad and new potatoes.

No, No, No. Not that kind of tale!!! 

I’m talking about dogs in the bedroom…something 

that was never on my wish list. My bedroom was 

my sanctuary, whereas Gary was all for sharing. It’s 

a personal choice and I know some of you will be 

horrified at the thought, while others wonder what 

all the fuss is about. Anyhow, I was overruled and 

now share my bedroom (and King size bed) with 

three hairy, annoying and often smelly males. 

The dogs do have their own beds – and they usually 

start the night sleeping in them. But once we’re 

fast asleep, with the stealth of a cat burglar, they 

climb onto the bed. Quite often one of us will wake 

up unable to move our legs. After establishing that 

we’re not paralysed from the waist down, we try and 

shift them. No matter how much you try they won’t 

budge. How they become twice the weight at night 

is a mystery. 

Just to be clear, they are not allowed actually in the 

bed. Come on, we do have some standards! So how 

is it that when I get a rare opportunity to actually 

stretch my legs out, all I can feel is grit? Having 

sand between my toes when I’m not on a beach isn’t 

great. 

To be fair, 80% of the time they are no problem. 

They find a gap, get in it and everyone sleeps 

happily ever after. Apart from when they don’t. 

That’s when the fun starts. 

It becomes a battle of the wills. Who can fake sleep 

the longest and ignore the scratching at the door, 

the tippy tappy claws as they trot around the room, 

the paws on the arms, the quiet barking that gets 

louder and louder. 

The 

Bedroom 

Tale 

To be fair, I am pretty good at it and usually win. 

Fake snoring and a bit of sleep talking usually 

does the trick. I can hear Gary huffing and puffing 

and eventually, because he is basically a kind and 

conscientious pet owner and I am not, he gets up 

and takes them down to the garden. The finale 

to my performance is to act really surprised the 

following morning when Gary is moaning and 

cussing. Like you didn’t hear a thing… 

As for romance, forget it. Having a hairy mutt giving 

you evils is about as big a passion killer as you can 

get. Not always a bad thing… 

Now let’s talk about bones. Raw, bloody, grotty 

bones. We used to give the dogs the occasional 

bone as a treat. A normal dog would take his bone 

off and spend hours gnawing away at it in doggy 

bliss. 

Not Herbie. He has no idea what to do with it, so 

he panics and buries it outside. Then hours later it 

turns up. Under Gary’s pillow. Raw meat, caked in 

soil. Who wouldn’t want that waiting for them when 

they go to bed? 

We do like to have the odd weekend away in a dog 

friendly cottage. The only problem is that often 

these little places only have a double bed – so by 

the end of the night one of us has usually rolled 

off the edge and the other one feels like they have 

gone ten rounds with Tyson Fury. The dogs are fine 

though. Well rested and raring to go. And the way 

they look at you…like, what’s all the fuss about?? 

Just tickle my belly and stop moaning.

nottingham Boys Choir - it’s 

brilliant! 

by Nottingham Boys Choir 

2022 has started 

with a splash for ASC 

swimmers. Straight 

into the County 

Championships with 

Personal Best times 

smashed and plenty of 

medals won. 

Overall there were 10 medallists with 20 medals 

won between them in 16 different events. The haul 

consisted of 1 Bronze, 8 Silver and 11 Gold (County 

Champions) all from ASC. 

In the Sports Centre League Round 1, our first club 

league gala, ASC came 3rd. We have also competed 

in the Nottingham ASA Stage 1 and Stage 3 galas 

and there is a full calendar ahead. 

The Ernehale Open meet took place on 12th and 13th 

March which was another action-packed day of fast 

swimming and bling for our own ASC swimmers and 

other clubs at Harvey Hadden 50m pool. 

ASC swimmers have also held their annual Club 

Championship Presentation. Swimmers who 

competed were presented with annual perpetual 

trophies for 1st place standing and plaques to 

keep forever for placing 1-6. Every swimmer who 

competed, if they didn’t place 1-6, got a ribbon medal 

so everyone left with something. A great night was 

had by swimmers and their adults who taxi around 

the country to very hot pools and cheer along 

weekend after weekend. 

We have secured an Asda Green Token giving spot 

and need your votes to win. Please vote once a week

Choir member Magnus, sings NBC’s praises; 

“Nottingham Boys Choir is a fantastic place to learn 

to sing, to make friends and to have fun. 

I am 18 and later this year will be leaving NBC 

to take up a place at a university in London. No 

longer associating Wednesday evenings with choir 

rehearsals will be so strange; NBC has been a part 

of my life since I was 6 years old, and I will miss so 

many things about it. 

The annual pantomime trips (tickets funded by a 

generous benefactor), football kick-abouts in the 

local park, outings to trampoline centres and laser 

tag, have all been great fun and I have loved being 

part of a ‘club’ with other boys. But the singing is the 

thing I will miss the most. 

At NBC we sing everything from pop songs to 8-part 

15th century madrigals, exploring folk, classical, and 

other genres along the way. Our musical director, 

Matthew Burton, is so enthusiastic and he is an 

amazing singer too; his vocal range is phenomenal – 

he can demonstrate the treble parts, and power out 

the bass notes comfortably too! 

It’s going to be a sad day for me when I perform in 

my final concert with NBC, but I know the Choir will 

continue to thrive, and I look forward to attending 

NBC concerts in the future. New members are 

always welcome, and I promise you, it’s brilliant!”

decision to have a 

stairlift installed 

is often a very 

difficult one to 

make, but when 

compared with 

the alternative of 

moving, or only 

living on one level 

of their home, 

many people have 

found a stairlift to 

be their preferred 

solution. 

The idea of deciding which stairlift is right for you, 

and having it fitted, can be a very daunting one so, to 

guide you through the process, these simple steps 

should be helpful. 

• Firstly, approach your local authority – you may be 

eligible for a grant to help towards the cost. 

• Obtain two or three different quotes and think 

about choosing a local supplier who would be able 

to get to you quickly in the event of a breakdown. 

It’s also very important to check reviews on Google 

and other reputable sites. 

• Arrange a survey – most companies can give you 

a price over the phone and you should NEVER feel 

pressured into making a decision. 

• All stairlifts are fitted to the stairs rather than the 

wall of the staircase, so you needn’t worry about 

having to sort out any decorating work. They are all 

powered from the mains and come with a battery 

backup in case of a power failure. 

• Do you want a new, reconditioned or rental 

stairlift? Most companies offer a range of options 

to suit your budget and needs. 

• Do you need a straight or curved one? If your 

stairs go straight up with no bends, you need a 

straight stairlift. If your staircase has a bend, you 

will need a curved one. 

• Check out the aftercare and warranty – ask if your 

supplier has a 24hr call out and what the response 

time would be. 

• A written quotation will be provided for the cost 

of the stairlift, including installation. You may be 

exempt from paying VAT, so check if you’re eligible. 

• Once you have decided on your preferred supplier, 

the installation process is very simple. Most 

stairlifts can be installed within 5 working days 

(some even next day) and the installation takes 

between 1-4hrs depending on the type. You will be 

given a thorough demonstration once it’s fitted and 

the engineer won’t leave until you are comfortable 

using it.

launched a new scams prevention and support 

programme for older people in Nottinghamshire. 

The programme, funded by Lloyds Banking Group, 

will help to prevent older people from falling for 

scams by increasing their knowledge and confidence 

to recognise and deal with attempted scams. It will 

also provide support to older fraud victims recovering 

after an incident. 

Older people can be particularly vulnerable to fraud 

and scams, which can have a serious emotional and 

financial impact, and can damage quality of life and 

wellbeing for many. 

Sophisticated scams have been on the rise during the 

pandemic with criminals devising even more ways to 

target those they believe to be vulnerable. This means 

it’s even more vital to support those that may be at 

greater risk.

home. For that 

clutter free, 

practical living good storage solutions seem to be top of 

everyone’s list this year – especially in the bedroom. 

Jonathan Ryder, Product Designer at Gliderobes shares 

his tips on bedroom storage and colour trends for Spring 

2022. 

In small areas you need to be clever in terms of storage 

solutions, décor and lighting to create the illusion of space 

and make the most of the area you have. 

The obvious storage solution in bedrooms are wardrobes 

but do think about investing in bespoke sliding wardrobes 

which can be made to measure to your exact needs. 

At Gliderobes unlike other suppliers we don’t use 

standard door sizes, ‘your’ wardrobe is made to ‘your’ 

exact size. The wardrobe interior, just like the exterior 

is fully customisable too so we can ensure flexibility and 

functionality.

When you’re going through your check list of storage

which have horizontal decorative spilt bars this will 

enhance the proportions of the space and making the

visibly expand the space too, and of course using mirrors 

and reflective surfaces like glass will reflect light back into 

the room, again making the space seem bigger. 

Over recent years wooden headboards have dominated 

the key look in bedrooms over but in 2021 upholstery is 

back. So have the best of both with our made to measure 

wood and upholstered headboards. And once you’re 

tucked up in bed, you’ll need to keep everything within 

arm’s reach with our matching bedside tables. 

For a warm, cosy feel indulge yourself in textures and 

sumptuous colours like rich creams and caramels. They’ll

Spring Flowering 

Favourites 

After a long winter it’s 

wonderful to walk around 

my garden and see signs 

of my spring flowering 

favourites getting busy for 

a wonderful show. 

Ajuga, (common name, bugle) 

has kept looking good through 

the winter but now the rosettes 

of leaves are looking fresh and 

glossy and I’m just waiting for 

the first short spikes of blue 

flowers to emerge. These are 

unassuming plants that spread, 

noninvasively, by sending out 

runners much like strawberry 

plants do creating ground 

hugging clumps. They do 

well in some shade but aren’t 

that fussy. My favourites are 

the bronze-leaved types like 

“Atropurpurea”, the darker 

“Black Scallop” and the reddish 

“Burgundy Glow.” The flower 

spikes are short and neat about 

6in / 15cm tall. Larger and 

more impressive is “Caitlin’s 

Giant”. Ajuga are easy to grow 

and propagate as the runners 

root easily. They don’t seem 

to suffer from any pests or 

diseases. 

Another tough and 

accommodating spring flowerer 

is lungwort (Pulmonaria). The 

name comes from the belief in 

the past that the spotted leaves 

of some species resembled 

the inside of a lung. Another 

common name, army and navy, 

is given because the wild plants 

bear both blue and reddish 

flowers at once, harking back 

to the military uniform colours 

of the time. Whatever the 

name, the flowers are loved 

by early flying bees. The plants 

grow in sun or part shade and 

prefer moisture. They do seed 

a bit and are best cut back 

really hard after flowering 

as the leaves can be tatty 

and sometimes get a bit of 

powdery mildew. They soon 

grow fresh, healthy leaves after 

this treatment. Good varieties 

include the vivid “Blue Ensign”, 

the paler “Opal” and the pink 

flowered “Mawson’s Red” or 

“Dora Bielefeld”. One of my 

favourites is “Cotton Cool”, 

with almost completely silvered 

leaves that makes a wonderful 

foliage plant through the year. 

Another lovely spring-flowering 

foliage plant is Brunnera, a 

relative of borage and equally 

good for bees. The clumps 

of heart-shaped leaves are 

crowned with forget-me-not 

like blue or sometimes white 

flowers. Modern varieties have 

introduced incredible silvered 

leaves, either netted with silver 

lines as in “Jack Frost” (blue 

flowers) and “Mr. Morse” (white 

flowers) or almost entirely 

silver like “Looking Glass”. They 

are best cut back hard in early 

summer to encourage fresh, 

new leaves. 

Spring in the perennial garden 

is truly something worth 

waiting for with lots of easy to 

grow flowers to perk up your 

plots and beautify your borders.

We all do well to remember that

I curse how technology continues 

to take us all over while Ken Dodd

this sports utility vehicle. The 

wheel base is wide enough to 

evade the irritating speed humps 

on some of the local roads to my 

dentist... The raised height is 

helpful and it’s an attractive car 

from the outside helped by the 

chrome edged windows although 

this doesn’t quite match up on the 

passenger side. There’s a large 

panoramic glass sunroof; the roof 

slides open above the front seats 

and this roof is similar to the one in 

the £201,000 Bentley Flying Spur. 

The 7-speed DSG automatic can 

be driven like a manual thanks 

to paddleshifts either side of the 

steering wheel. But for me this 

isn’t comparable to a traditional 

manual; it’s lazy driving that takes 

away the fun of making those gear 

changes. 

This 1.5-litre VW returns 42mpg 

over the course of the test. The 

Tiguan’s numberplate ends in 

BFF. Best Friend Forever my 

daughters reliably inform me. No, 

unfortunately it is not for me.

struggle with being told that we 

must behave in a certain way 

and then discover that few are

There are petrol engines that 

are really efficient and surely 

these are the ones that should 

be being used in cars now. If 

it is not possible to have both 

performance and efficiency then 

surely manufacturers must make

How police keep thousands safe on nights out 

From dealing with drunken fights 

to hen parties asking for a ‘selfie’, 

policing Nottingham’s night-time 

economy swings and fluctuates like no 

other shift. 

One minute officers find themselves 

engaging with excited groups on a fun 

night out. The next they are bundling a 

suspect into the back of a police van 

following a violent incident at a nearby bar. 

They are long shifts – 8pm to 6am on a 

Saturday night – and the all-embracing 

aim of the policing teams is to ensure 

people can enjoy a safe night out. 

Occasionally this will require taking 

someone into custody. But most of the 

time officers will simply be patrolling 

the streets, engaging with revellers and 

providing help and assistance where 

needed. 

It’s why Sergeant Richard Tiernan, of the 

city centre neighbourhood policing team, 

enjoys policing the night-time economy. 

An estimated 40,000 people descend 

on Nottingham every weekend to 

enjoy the city’s nightlife and a mix of 

Nottinghamshire Police teams are 

tasked with keeping them safe. 

Working to a rota, the weekend nighttime 

team consists of up to 15 police 

constables, two sergeants and one 

inspector, but there are also response 

officers, armed officers and the dog unit 

on standby, ready to deal with any major 

incidents. 

Managing the night-time economy 

involves a huge amount of planning 

and Nottinghamshire Police works in 

partnership with many organisations 

including Nottingham City Council, 

East Midlands Ambulance Service, 

St John’s Ambulance, the University 

of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent 

University to keep revellers safe. 

Police also work with door staff, 

pub managers, street pastors and 

community protection officers employed 

by the council. 

But regardless of how much planning 

and work goes into policing the nighttime 

economy, much will depend on 

the weather gods. Rain means revellers 

will go straight home, but dry weather 

means they will remain in the city after 

the pubs and clubs have closed.

“Ultimately it’s policing in its purest form,” 

he said. “You’re out there and doing 

what you joined up for, which is keeping 

people safe. 

“People have perceptions of what 

policing the night-time economy is like 

but you do get some rewarding jobs. The 

other night we talked someone down 

from the roof of a car park who was 

having a mental health crisis.”

new highway code rules for 2022

The Highway Code has received a refresh, with 

a new set of rules coming into force from 29th 

January 2022. As well as some 49 existing laws 

having been updated, new rules will be introduced. 

The changes are extensive and further information 

is available on the website link located at the 

bottom of this article. However, the key areas are 

summarised below. 

Hierarchy of road users 

Previously The Highway Code stated all road users 

should be considerate towards each other, applying 

this principle to pedestrians and drivers equally. It 

meant that equal responsibility was originally placed 

on all road users for assuring the safety of others. 

The new hierarchy places responsibility on road 

users who could do greatest harm to others, and it 

is with them that the greatest obligation to protect 

the most vulnerable on the road now lies. Top of 

the hierarchy are lorry drivers, cars, vans, buses and 

motorcycles. But it should be noted that cyclists, 

horse riders and horse-drawn carriage drivers have 

a greater responsibility to reduce the danger posed 

to pedestrians. 

Pedestrian priorities at junctions 

Prior to the rule change, road users would have given 

way to pedestrians who have started to cross the 

road into which they are turning. 

Under the new rules priority must be given to 

pedestrians who are waiting to cross the road, which 

means that if you are about to turn into a road and a 

pedestrian is waiting to cross, you should give way. 

New rule for drivers and motorcyclists at junctions 

The new rule states that when turning into or out of 

a junction, drivers should not cut across the path of 

any other road user, including cyclists, horse riders 

or horse-drawn vehicles, if doing so would cause the 

other road-user to slow down, stop or swerve. 

Safe passing distances 

An amendment to existing Rule 163 sets out safe 

passing distances for drivers when overtaking 

cyclists, motorcyclists, horse riders and those in 

horse-drawn carriages. 

Drivers must give at least a 1.5 metre space when 

overtaking a cyclist at speeds of up to 30mph. More 

space should be allowed when overtaking at speeds 

of more than 30mph. Rule 72 establishes the right 

for cyclists to ride in the centre of their lane, to 

ensure that they remain visible. 

When passing a pedestrian who is walking in the 

road, drivers should allow at least two metres of 

space and maintain a low speed. 

Rule 213 has also changed and now states that on 

narrow sections of roads, horse riders may ride in 

the centre of the lane and drivers should allow them 

to do so for their own safety, to ensure they can see 

and be seen. Drivers should pass a horse at least 2 

metres distance and at a slow speed. 

In all cases, drivers will now have to wait behind 

a motorcyclist, cyclist, horse rider, horse-drawn 

vehicle or pedestrian and not overtake if it is unsafe 

or not possible to meet these clearances. Extra 

care should be taken in poor weather, including high 

winds.

3 O’Clock On The Road

By the time this article appears in the magazine, 

my new book ‘Murder, Mystery and Mayhem in and 

around Arnold’ Snippets from history Vol. 9, should 

be in the bookshops. 

Below is a tale on this theme. One that has not, until 

now, made it into print. 

The roads around Arnold, especially Mansfield Road, 

were in very poor condition during the 18th century. 

There was little habitation near the main road passing 

through what is now Daybrook and Redhill. No lights 

illuminated the way and much of the forest remained. 

It was a brave or reckless soul that travelled this area 

after dark. 

On Friday January 18th, 1745, Thomas White was 

riding a horse, travelling alone between Nottingham 

and Mansfield. He had been to Nottingham on 

business for his master, John Monk, a Mercer (cloth 

merchant) and was now returning home having 

completed his master’s business. 

White was carrying some 105 pounds along with 15 

shillings and 3 pence, the result of his transaction in 

the city. This was a considerable sum to be carrying 

at the time (£24,800 in todays money). Thomas must 

have been a very trusted servant to be carrying such 

a large sum for his master. In spite of the dangerous 

conditions at the time, he appeared to be travelling 

alone and had not taken any special precautions to 

protect the money or himself. He did not appear to be 

armed. 

About 3 o’clock in the afternoon White had reached 

the part of the road around where Oxclose Lane now 

stands. In January it would have been dark, making 

his journey doubly dangerous. This proved to be the 

case, as at this point on his journey he was ambushed 

by two middle aged men. 

One of these men emerged from the undergrowth 

and grabbed the bridle of White’s horse. The men 

then proceeded to rob him of all the money he was 

carrying. They were described by Thomas as being 

mounted on dark coloured horses. They were both 

wearing dark coloured wide riding coats which 

covered the rest of their clothes. 

Neither of the men were known to Thomas but he 

described them as follows; One had a thin face and 

no wig having his own dark hair. This was the man 

that had stopped Thomas and grabbed his horse. The 

other man was the opposite to his colleague. He had 

a plump face and wore a periwig (a stylised wig), very 

popular at the time. Neither appeared to have a mask 

other than the up turned collar of their coats.

The two men then tied White’s hands and set his 

horse off back the way he had come. They then rode 

off into the forest never to be seen again. 

It is likely that they had been watching Thomas 

in Nottingham and knew that he was carrying the 

financial outcome of his trade in the town. The 

robbers had then hidden in the forest awaiting his 

arrival. 

This stretch of road was notorious for highway men at 

the time so it is very probable that this was not their 

only crime of this type. As it was dark the description 

of the two men could fit very many and so they were 

never caught.

Robert Mellors Old Boys 

Local councillor John Parr is still receiving lots of heartwarming stories from students 

that used to attend Robert Mellors School. Here is another trip down memory lane from 

ex-students. Please do keep your stories coming. 

I was born in 1934 at the chauffeurs house at 

Ruddington Grange. 

When I was six we moved to Daybrook and I 

attended Daybrook School where Mr Weddle 

was headmaster. I then moved to Robert Mellors 

where I was assessed by Mr Paling and placed in 

the B stream. I progressed through Mr Nichols, 

then Mrs Keeble (slipper AKA) then Mr Marshall 

and finally Mr (Billy) Burgess. 

On sports day, I 

won the 100, 250 

and 440 yard races 

as well as the long 

jump. I was also the 

top goal scorer for 

the school football 

team in the 1948/49 

year, with 14 goals 

to my name. 

In 1949 I left school 

and went to work at 

Raleigh Industries. 

I kept up my love of football and played for 

Arnold Rovers up until the time we won the cup, 

beating Sheepbridge Steel at the Forest ground. I 

also played for Raleigh and a few other noteable 

teams in Nottingham over the years. 

For my two year National Service, I joined the 

Royal Air Force, based at Stafford where I was in 

the Maintenance Unit, supplying aircraft parts all 

over the world. 

Ken Pritchard 1945 - 1949 

In 1962, I left Raleigh and set up my own 

business, Ken Pritchard Repair Centre, repairing 

motorbikes and scooters. During this time I also 

raced motorbikes as well as motorbikes with 

sidecars for the Italian team, Agrati Sales UK Ltd. 

Eventually I graduated to restoring classic and 

vintage cars, Daleside Road Motors Classic Car 

Workshop, where I am still working with my 

son John Pritchard (who also went to Robert 

Mellors). 

I have very fond memories of the old school 

despite getting the slipper from Mrs Keeble, the 

stick across my hand from Mr (Hedgehog) Carter 

and wacks on the backside from Mr Clemence. 

Mr Clemence was the woodwork teacher and 

owner of the famous 2ft long piece of 2 x 2 wood 

know as the ‘excaliber’. This was used to make sure 

the boys all used the woodwork tools properly!! 

One of the happiest days of my life was turning 

up at the Astoria Ballroom to meet a girl who 

eventually became my wife. I was married to 

Betty Marshall for 65 years. Sadly she passed 

away in 2019. 

I went back to Raleigh where I became head tester 

of motorbikes, mopeds and scooters. I would 

clock up over 1000 miles per week! I then went 

into the test house to develop 2 stroke engines.

Something I’ve been working on with our team 

since the start of the new year is how creating 

small habits can have a great outcome. 

I’m going to give you a quick rundown on how 

you can turn the tables, get back on track and 

see quick, positive results. 

SLEEP 

Yes, sleep…. it drastically affects so much more 

than just how tired you feel. 

We require 7-8 hours a night to optimally recover 

our bodies. 

Yet most of us get less than 6, due to social 

media, watching telly late into the evening or just 

having a poor bedtime routine. 

If you get 7-8 hours of actual, good quality sleep 

it’s not just your tiredness that you’ll see improve. 

You will be less stressed, your mood will be 

better and your brain will be sharper. There is also 

evidence that it can improve your overall health. 

NUTRITION 

The quality of what we put into our bodies is so 

important. It is so much more than simply eating 

what we fancy (although there is also a place 

for this!)

What you need to do 

1. Place the mayonnaise, yogurt, tomato puree, green onions, curry 

powder and lemon juice in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper

Hawkeye Falconry UK have cared 

for birds, both large and small 

for over 30 years now. Originally 

based in Shropshire, near Ludlow, 

the team expanded around 10 

years ago to form a second 

location, in Nottinghamshire. The 

team focus on the conservation of 

birds and also provide educational, 

entertaining displays at some of 

the largest events in the UK. 

At the start of the covid pandemic, 

like all suppliers and traders 

on the show circuit, the diary 

cleared of events and did look 

sparse. Therefore the team 

contacted Thoresby Park, near 

Ollerton, to see if they would be 

happy for Hawkeye to undertake 

experiences. The aim was to 

keep the birds enthused with 

excitement, to meet and fly to 

members of the public, as well as 

flying daily at the teams base. Due 

to the amazing feedback gathered, 

the team are now permanently 

undertaking experiences at 

Thoresby, in addition to attending 

the usual calendar of events. 

Alistair, who runs the experiences 

at Thoresby, undertakes exclusive 

sessions with his personal team of 

raptors. The experiences vary in 

itinerary and are pre-booked only. 

Usually they are undertaken in a 

small group of guests with multiple 

opportunities to fly the birds. 

For a more special encounter, 

Private and Family Experiences are 

available, meaning the birds are 

there just for you. Photography 

Workshops are also undertaken 

for budding photographers, to 

learn a wide range of photography 

skills. For the more experienced 

photographer, the day provides an 

opportunity to refine abilities such 

as high-speed photography.

Children and young people with additional needs in 

Nottinghamshire risk losing out on vital services 

if more paid carers are not recruited to help with 

their essential care. 

FTM Dance is a provider of respite care through 

performing arts classes, offering support for families 

of children and young adults with additional needs 

and diverse abilities across Nottinghamshire. Its 

unique proactive care model not only gives families 

much needed respite time but their fun dance and 

drama sessions promote physical and social skills 

and enable creative expression, enhancing wellbeing 

and promoting independence for the participants. 

It currently supports over 100 children across the 

county and employs carers for its creative classes 

but needs more to support increasing local need. 

Leanne Evans, FTM Dance Founder and Director, said: 

“We hear about the crisis in care sector recruitment daily 

in the news and it’s a critical problem. It’s not just care 

homes for the elderly that are lacking vital support. Day 

services, respite care and many more care environments 

also urgently need additional paid people.” 

“The bottom line is we need more staff urgently to 

be able to continue our crucial services and say yes 

to more local families, their children and the young 

people who need our support.”

A new swimming scheme has been launched by 

Gedling Borough Council to help people in the 

borough to be more active and enjoy swimming. 

The Swimming Passport scheme is open to Gedling 

residents aged under 16 and over 65. These age 

groups are able to swim at dedicated weekly sessions 

for free at Arnold, Calverton and Carlton Forum 

leisure centres. 

The Swimming Passport scheme was developed as 

part of the Gedling Borough Council’s priorities to 

improve the health and well-being of residents, as 

well as reduce health inequalities across the borough. 

Swimming has many physical and mental health 

benefits as well as being a vitally important life skill. 

Gedling Leisure centres have a 25 metre pool at both 

Arnold and Carlton Forum leisure centres, and an 18 

metre pool at Calverton leisure centre for swimmers 

to enjoy. 

One of the residents who will benefit from the new 

scheme is 91 year old swimmer, Arthur Beal (pictured 

above) who regularly attends Arnold Leisure Centre. 

Arthur will be saving around £120 per year if he 

attends the sessions created for the new scheme. 

Eligible residents will need a valid Gedling Leisure 

card to take part. Places on these sessions are 

limited so booking in advance is recommended and 

can be done online at gedling.gov.uk/swimmingpassports 

or by contacting the Arnold, Calverton or 

Carlton Forum leisure centres directly. 


LICORICE PIZZA 

NIGHTMARE ALLEY 

To say I was excited for Licorice Pizza 

would be an understatement. Paul 

Thomas Anderson is my favourite 

director of all time, so to say that this 

film still surpassed my expectations is a 

miracle. This film is the director’s loving 

ode to San Fernando Valley, where he 

grew up and set many of his earlier 

works. Much like Quentin Tarantino’s 

‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’, 

this film does not really have much 

of a conventional plot structure to 

speak of. It moves at a very odd pace 

as it shows scenes with seemingly no 

greater place in the narrative beyond 

enhancing the characters and themes 

of the film, which is exactly why I love 

it. Where most directors would have 

a very clear-cut plot, this film has a 

sprawling, episodic feel that allows it 

to relish in the nostalgic atmosphere 

present throughout the entire runtime. 

Yet it always maintains this dark 

undercurrent, something that drives 

the two leads together and led me 

to further empathise with both main 

characters. This was arguably my 

favourite new release in years and I 

suggest everybody go and watch it!

Nightmare Alley is a visually stunning and 

passionately performed return to cinemas for the 

director of Pacific Rim, Hellboy and Crimson Peak, 

Guillermo Del Toro. 

Unfortunately, that is where it ends. 

This slick neo-noir follows Stanton Carlisle (Bradley 

Cooper) as he escapes a mysterious past straight into 

the macabre wonders of a ‘freak-show’. He ingratiates 

himself and propels himself onward into troubled 

success. 

Del Toro excels at crafting a rich, artfully crafted world 

that pulls you in, and yet that shiny, art deco facade 

is easily chipped. Nightmare Alley is all style and no 

substance. It relies on its incredible cinematography 

and production design, leaning heavily on fervent 

performances from Cooper and Cate Blanchett. 

They embody their flawed, unlikeable characters 

with an easy authenticity, yet Rooney Mara (Girl with 

the Dragon Tattoo) is left will very little to get her 

talented teeth into. 

Our circus of antagonists blunder from one plot point 

to another, with very little in the way of story, never 

mind a genuine emotional payoff in the finale. It’s 

heavy on metaphors and foreshadowing, preferring 

an arthouse ‘show don’t tell’ approach to verbal 

exposition, but doesn’t give enough to draw any real 

conclusions from. 

You’re left guessing at what you’ve just watched; you 

probably did just enjoy the visual feast, yet are left 

with the slightly bitter aftertaste of wood alcohol.
