Countries were selected by <strong>the</strong> panel based on <strong>the</strong>ir experience with implement<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
technologies <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest and level <strong>of</strong> participation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> Eurocode. The panel<br />
met with technical leaders <strong>in</strong> Canada, Denmark, Germany, and France. The sessions <strong>in</strong><br />
Denmark <strong>in</strong>cluded representatives from Sweden and Norway. The pr<strong>in</strong>cipal representatives<br />
from each country and <strong>the</strong>ir affiliations are shown <strong>in</strong> table 2. A complete list <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong><br />
all contacts, <strong>the</strong>ir addresses, and phone/fax numbers are <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> appendix B.<br />

The hosts extended a generous hospitality and consideration <strong>in</strong> response to <strong>the</strong> questions<br />
provided. In most countries, host<strong>in</strong>g agencies prepared an agenda <strong>of</strong> expert presentations,<br />
based on <strong>the</strong> questions that had been forwarded to <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> advance. The panel shared<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation with <strong>in</strong>ternational counterparts on U.S. policy <strong>in</strong>itiatives and research activities<br />
to promote <strong>in</strong>novative<br />
<strong>geotechnical</strong><br />
<strong>eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />
worldwide. The U.S.<br />
group was, on several<br />
occasions, also asked<br />
to make presentations<br />
about U.S. <strong>practices</strong>.<br />
Most sessions were<br />
roundtable discussion<br />
(figure 1), but several<br />
site visits were<br />
arranged <strong>in</strong> response<br />
to <strong>the</strong> questions about<br />
new and <strong>in</strong>novative<br />
<strong>geotechnical</strong> <strong>practices</strong>.<br />
