requirements over ge<strong>of</strong>oam. BASt also has <strong>the</strong><br />
ability to freeze soil and has conducted<br />
research <strong>in</strong> this area.<br />
The BASt has developed a new soil-stiffness<br />
device that uses a fall<strong>in</strong>g-weight <strong>in</strong>put<br />
measur<strong>in</strong>g system. After apply<strong>in</strong>g a dynamic<br />
force, a readout device gives both a<br />
deformation value and a stiffness modulus<br />
value.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> 1980s, an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g research project<br />
was performed on an <strong>in</strong>strumented MSE wall<br />
us<strong>in</strong>g nonwoven geotextile re<strong>in</strong>forcements. An<br />
<strong>in</strong>strumented, steep-sloped (5V:1H), geogridre<strong>in</strong>forced<br />
soil wall with a vegetated face was<br />
also presented. BASt is also evaluat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
geosyn<strong>the</strong>tic re<strong>in</strong>forc<strong>in</strong>g materials that are not<br />
affected by adverse pH values <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> soil. A<br />
recent book (available only <strong>in</strong> German)<br />
<strong>in</strong>corporates a limit-state design approach to<br />
geosyn<strong>the</strong>tic re<strong>in</strong>forcements (Empfehlungen<br />
fuer Bewehrungen aus Geokunstst<strong>of</strong>fen –<br />
