Designer Tips...What’s Hot
Somewhere between “little girl” and “teenager” girls begin
to develop an increasing interest in their bedroom’s décor.
With strong opinions about fun and fashion, most exercise
a significant influence when it comes to decorating their
rooms.
When selecting the color scheme for the room, a good
rule of thumb is to begin with the rug and the fabrics for
the bedding and windows. Since there are infinite shades
of paint, but only a few ideal fabrics, don’t make the popular
mistake of selecting paint color first. Don’t be afraid to mix
patterns, colors, and textures.
Just as little kids love the cozy, cocooning effect of playhouses,
tents, and forts, preteen girls love the intimate
sleep areas created by tall headboards, mock canopies, and
screens.
When selecting furniture for the pre-teen’s room, think
versatile, quality, and non-trendy for this most expensive
component of the project. Keep in mind that fads are a fleeting
thing – achieve your thematic decorating through easily
replaced accessories such as pillows, lamp shades, and art.
With careful planning, your teen’s newly decorated bedroom
will delight her until she gets ready for the next big
challenge in your lives: College!
WELCOME LETTER
It’s all exactly ours
—Antigone Petroff
It’s been said that “real luxury is customization,” and the homeowners
featured in these pages understand that sentiment perfectly. For
them, the prized spaces in their homes are those that were specifically
designed to meet one of their wishes or needs.
In describing her kitchen remodel, Antigone Petroff calls attention,
not to the cabinets and countertops you see, but rather things you don’t
see. Like the 48”-wide drawer which was modified to accommodate
a handy gift-wrapping station. Or her husband Sam’s drawer, which
serves as a charging station and a catch-all for keys and electronics.
Then there’s the Moine family’s pool which was designed with a shallow
sundeck so their dog, Maverick, could safely join them in the water.
Nearby, a raised bed holds a palm tree as a nod to the years the family
lived in Southern California.
Finally, while thinking through the remodel of their recently purchased
condo, Carol and Robert Anderson wanted to create a sophisticated
space that works for their lives today, while taking special agingin-place
steps to create a haven they can live in comfortably as they age.
As I write this letter, my 92-year-old mother works on a jigsaw puzzle
in the dining room, not far from my home office. My version of luxury
would be to offer her a suite of her own, with a bedroom, bathroom
and mini kitchen that would give her the sense of independence, while
keeping her safely nearby.
What about you? I would love to hear of specialized home renovations
that are on your wish list. Who knows? It might just be a custom
touch that we want to feature in a future issue of Housetrends.
Thanks for reading.
SOMETHING TO
grow on
Generational home paves the way
for modern functionality
BY SYDNE SANTO | PHOTOS BY DAWN M. SMITH
For some, home is defined by a place; for others, a person.
For homeowners Antigone and Sam Petroff, their
home is defined by both.
Antigone grew up in a 1922 Colonial Revival with her
parents and two siblings. After she and Sam were married,
the couple had the opportunity to purchase her
childhood home once her parents decided to downsize.
Over the course of the 30-plus years they’ve lived in
their home, the two have celebrated a number of milestones.
Now, the Petroffs are tackling their next adventure:
a total revamp of their classic kitchen to introduce
modern conveniences. ➻
housetrends magazine 2022 19

1
2
Respecting traditions
A full kitchen remodel wasn’t the original
plan. Thirty years ago, the couple
pulled up old, linoleum flooring and
found soft pine underneath which they
had refinished. Now, three decades
later, the pine could not be refinished
again and they needed to replace the
floors.
“The more we talked about what
to change, the bigger our ideas grew,”
shares Antigone. “By the time we were
done brainstorming, new floors meant
a whole new kitchen.”
Luckily for the Petroffs, Vicki Waker,
of Cabinet Creations, was ready to bring
all their ideas to life. The Dayton-based
specialist sat down with the couple to
nail down exactly what they wanted,
which was a way to keep the integrity of
their kitchen but still update it to offer
the convenience they needed in their
day-to-day lives.
“One of our challenges early on was
figuring out how to make the best
use of the space,” Waker explains. “We
wanted to make sure every inch of the
kitchen worked for Antigone and Sam
and served a purpose.”
So, they set forth in outlining ways
for the Petroff family to best use their
kitchen space. Between the couple’s
three grown children and grandchildren,
the need for organized chaos was
a top priority. “We are lucky enough to
have a tight family group,” Antigone
says. “On Christmas and Easter we
gather 40 without blinking an eye.”
“When people come over, they gather
in the kitchen,” Antigone says with a
laugh. “And with that many bodies to
think about, it was important that we
have a layout that we can use no matter
how many people are inside.” With
plenty of counter space, seating, and
walkways, it’s clear that Antigone and
Sam can continue the open atmosphere
and family-focused traditions they have
come to love over the years. ➻
1 An existing bar area, just off the kitchen
was updated. To the left of the kitchen
window, double doors open to a passthrough
cabinet that holds everyday china
and glassware. 2 A beverage cooler and
ice maker in the bar area come in handy
when the couple entertains. 3 Drawers
on the sink side of the island include custom
partitons to accommodate silverware,
foils and wraps, and large bowls and platters.
4 Matching the cabinetry, this buffet is
attached to the wall but was built to look
like a piece of freestanding furniture.
Modern conveniences
The custom cabinetry installed throughout the kitchen allowed Antigone to give each
drawer a purpose. “I love every single drawer in this kitchen because it was planned with
so much thought. I’ve lived in this kitchen for over thirty years, so I know my routine
and I know what I need,” Antigone gushes. “Some of the best parts of our kitchen are the
things you don’t see.”
The things you don’t see: a custom gift-wrapping drawer. The 48-inch drawer was specially
made by fusing two drawers together in the buffet. It serves as a storage container
for her endless collection of gift wrap and ribbons. The storage next to the kitchen island
makes for the perfect in-house gift-wrapping station.
Sam has a hidden drawer of his own, this one dubbed the media drawer. “[Sam’s drawer]
is his catch-all drawer,” Antigone shares. “It has multiple outlets and USB ports included
so all of his things—phone, laptop, keys, and other electronics—have a place to live. It’s
so convenient for both of us.” ➻
1 2
1 This drawer was positioned to allow Sam to grab his keys and electronics
as he heads out the door. 2 Two drawers were merged into one to create
ample space for Antigone’s gift-wrapping station.
“I love being
in my kitchen...”
–Antigone Petroff
New barstools, with a
lower profile, were added
around the island.
1 Warm woods and soft whites add a timeless appeal, while splashes of color in the wallpaper and island add a pop of personality.
2 Antigone’s collection of Greek coffee pots is on display over the range. 3 Above the sink, pieces from the owner’s
pottery collection, including several McCoys, are switched to correlate with the season.
Natural touches
One of the best ways to keep the kitchen feeling familiar was to utilize what was already there.
“My parents put in the beams, so they’ve always been there,” says Antigone. “One of them is structural and
the other decorative, but they add a lot to the kitchen.” The worn flooring gave way to new wood flooring, which
matched the Iroko Wood island countertop and wooden beams on the ceiling almost perfectly.
With the wooden touches already in place, the next question was determining how to compliment them. The
answer: play up the natural, earthy colors. With a spacious sage green island and floral wallpaper, adding to the
view out the large kitchen window, the team has created a relaxing, inviting space.
But don’t let the idea of dark wood fool you; the bright white cabinets offer a unique juxtaposition to the kitchen
and provides a modern twist. “We wanted to create an atmosphere that felt new and welcomed people into the
kitchen, but also made sure the kitchen didn’t feel separate from the rest of the home,” Waker says. “The color
combinations were very intentional.”
24 housetrends.com

2
3
Carefully crafted collections
The rest of the kitchen is filled with
pottery and special collections that
speak to Antigone and Sam’s unique
tastes. From beautiful 20th century
McCoy pottery to mid-century modern
barware, there is no shortage of
eye-catching pieces to look at.
But one of their favorite collections
is one their families have helped
them curate over the years: Briki, or
Greek coffee pots. “This collection is
special to us because it grew straight
out of the kitchens of our parents and
grandparents,” Antigone explains.
“It’s a great way for us to celebrate
our European heritage and celebrate
our families.”
A home to grow in
A total kitchen overhaul is no simple
task and can become even more daunting
given the years and memories
Antigone and Sam have established in
their home. But, between their vision
and Waker’s keen eye, the result is one
the Petroffs can continue to enjoy for
years to come.
“I love being in my kitchen,” says
Antigone. “It’s full of memories—I can
see the family I grew up with and the
family Sam and I have together. It’s all
exactly ours.”
City Slick
A downtown condo gets a high-end makeover
BY SUSAN ZINGRAF | PHOTOS BY DALE CLARK
30 housetrends.com

With a love of city life and an eye on retirement, a couple relocating from New
York City transformed an Arena District condo into a modern retreat to suit their
metropolitan tastes and future needs.
This award-winning home design was inspired by the homeowner’s background
in landscape architecture and brought to life by Swiss Remodeling
and Meghan Conrad Carey of City Park Interiors. Their creative collaboration
endured a long-distance design and building process during the challenging time
of the pandemic, successfully achieving a sophisticated living space homeowners
Robert and Carol Anderson can comfortably enjoy for years to come. ➻
The floor-to-ceiling windows are the star of the space—day or night.
Pays to listen
A key factor for the Andersons choosing Swiss Remodeling as their contractor
was owner Eran Suissa’s open, flexible approach and willingness to listen. Carol
explains, “Eran was inclusive of all of our ideas and feedback, he never tried
to manage us based on what he thought we should do, or what he thought we
couldn’t do.”
Eran explains his company’s philosophy with clients: “In the beginning of the
process when we go into the design phase, we just listen, we make no comments
or choices.” He adds, “Show me how you feel, how do you use this space, how do
you want to live your life, what is the focus of your home. That’s what we take in
consideration. And then we can start implementing.”
1 The same cabinetry used in the kitchen, crosses the floor to this two-sided mini-bar area
which includes a handy beverage cooler on the living room side. 2 A counter-height extension
of the island serves as additional prep space as well as storage for favorite cookbooks.
3 Wall space and lighted display cabinets over the banquette are reserved for photos and
mementos from the couple’s past and future travels.
Award-winning work
This meeting of the minds produced
a design that not only won the hearts
of the Andersons, it also won Swiss
Remodeling a 2022 NARI Regional
CotY Award for Best Residential
Interior.
Attention to detail on the project
was paramount for the Andersons,
and Eran appreciated it, “Robert is
very detail-oriented, so every little
detail was in his drawing, it was
unbelievable. Everything from trim
height to special cabinets, everything
from ceiling to floor was in there, he
thought it all through.” Eran adds,
“We love these clients, they challenged
us and pushed us to the next
level.” ➻
Into the woods
Given Robert’s experience with and the
couple’s appreciation for the outdoors, it’s
no surprise wood is a primary element
in the design, alongside an earthy color
palette. Wood is integrated throughout the
design in creative ways adding depth and
warmth to the modern backdrop of this
urban living space.
Wood-toned cabinetry abounds across
the kitchen and dining areas offering sleek
storage with organic presence and feel.
In the main living areas, a treated steel
wall masterfully frames the fireplace, adding
a rustic, earthy touch and creating a
comforting atmosphere with conversation
seating. A cozier den-like space sits on
the opposite side with modern, off-set
shelving bookending the television set on
a wood backdrop. These two living areas
are differentiated with a low bookcase that
discretely creates separate spaces without
interfering with the sweeping downtown
view.
The modern, earthy feel flows seamlessly
into the master bedroom suite. The wood
wall behind the headboard blends with the
soft textures and colors of the furniture
and décor. Meghan explains, “There’s so
much glass and metal in the architecture
of the building itself, so the opportunity to
bring in warmth and soften those harder
surfaces was important especially in the
bedroom. The wood sets the tone in that
room. The two pendants over each nightstand
help bring the ceiling down and
warm it up, creating a more enveloping
space. The drapery and choice of fabrics
add softness and color to the room.
The spa-like master bath is a clean balance
of styles with the classic marble
design in the shower and tub area combined
with modern fixtures and the woodtoned
floating vanity and round mirrors.
“We wanted to make the master bath
modern yet timeless as well. The marble
design on the tile lends a classic elegant
feel applied in a more modern aesthetic,”
adds Meghan. ➻
In for the long run
The Andersons designed this condo
as their forever home and made
other decisions in anticipation of
aging in place. The second bedroom
is equipped with a private ensuite
to accommodate caretaker help they
may need down the road, and they
placed the laundry area in a location
easily accessible to others.
The relationship established
between the Andersons, Swiss
Remodeling and Meghan persevered
the pandemic challenges to work
through an intense design and building
process and realize a successful
outcome. Eran says, “I haven’t seen
anything else like this in the city, the
uniqueness of the design and textures
and colors, it’s a very unique project.”
About the team Robert and Carol
chose to build their forever home,
Carol concludes, “Looking back, wow
did we make the most awesome decision
ever.” ➻
1 A wide-open floor plan works beautifully
during those times when the couple
entertains. 2 A mini-bar area placed
between the dining area of the kitchen
and the living room acts as a bit of a room
divider. 3 A floating vanity with dual round
mirrors helps create a modern, minimalistic
feel in the couple’s bathroom. 4 In the
den area, a generously-sized TV provides
something to watch when the couple
takes a break from watching the view out
the window.
Navigating among the many attributes of luxury linens
BY LEE RHODES
These last couple years have been doozies, to say the least. How many of us would
like to go to sleep and wake up to learn it’s all been a dream? (Sign me up!)
While that’s not going to happen, we can strive to go to sleep easily, sleep well and
have good dreams. And it helps to start with high-quality bedding. Or more precisely,
luxury linens. We’re going to break it all down—how to achieve a beautiful bed that’s
also a soothing place to sleep; how to choose the right material; and how to apply
some quick tips that will help along the way. ➻
YOU WOULD DO WELL TO GO WITH SATEEN SHEETS
BALANCE AESTHETICS & COMFORT
We want our bedrooms to be our sanctuaries,
so start with the idea that your linens
can be the canvas on which you build
that sanctuary. As Michelle Klein, CEO
of Italian luxury lifestyle brand SFERRA,
puts it, “We firmly believe that [people]
should not have to choose between comfort
and aesthetics; these should go hand
in hand.” So how do you do it?
Invest in luxury bedding. It’ll look good
and feel good. This may mean exploring
different luxury linen retailers to find
the right one for you, but Klein offers
this tidbit: “To me, what constitutes
luxury is quality and craftsmanship.”
Craftsmanship equates to the artistry
and the precision of the work that goes
into producing the linens. And quality
materials include things like linen, silk,
Egyptian cotton, satin, bamboo or other
organic materials, as well as lustrous
sateen and percale weave fabrics.
Find a retailer with a range of colors
and textures to choose from so that
you cannot only enhance your bedroom’s
décor but also create a personal haven.
“Textural geometric patterns continue to
stand out as being important in design,”
explains Klein. While textured linen bed
sheets offer a luxurious feel, any kind of
texture can provide a more pleasant (and
sensory) sleep experience.
Choose calming colors. Soothe your
soul with cool hues such as blues and
nature-inspired greens, as well as soft
neutrals. You can never go wrong with
a soft white. Lighter colors make spaces
feel more open and airy, and fortunately,
this spring’s color trends are on track to
visually open up our bedrooms. “Blush
tones accented with greys and neutrals
round out our palette for spring,” says
Klein.
➻
housetrends magazine 2022 45

CHOOSE THE RIGHT MATERIAL
Struggling to narrow down which type of material
to purchase? Given that there’s a seemingly endless
array of options, this is understandable. Start by
asking yourself some questions.
How do you sleep? If you tend to get warm at
night, a crisp percale would likely make you the
most comfortable. Silk too has an airy feel, and
linen traps very little heat and is thus quite breathable.
Cooler sleepers would do well to go with
sateen sheets, though the ever-versatile linen can
also be cozy for those who tend to get a chill at
night.
What season is it? In warmer months, smooth
percales are sought after, but “If you are looking to
have a warmer sleep for the cooler fall and winter
months, sateens work well,” says Klein, “and layering
the bed with a nice blanket and/or coverlet is
always a nice touch, both in terms of comfort and
aesthetics.”
Do you care about thread count? You probably
shouldn’t. What matters more is the quality of
the thread itself and the length of the bedding’s
fibers. Extra-long fibers equate to finer linens and
as such will be labeled as “long-staple.” At the very
least, don’t rely on thread count alone. Weave is
another important factor, and percale and sateen
are among the most popular weaves, given their
softness.
the Nile river valley, and woven by master craftsmen
modern look. (Orlo from Sferra) 3 A pique border and
if you tend to
get warm at
night...
A CRISP PERCALE
WOULD LIKELY MAKE
YOU THE MOST
COMFORTABLE.
TAKE NOTE OF THESE BUYING TIPS
Touch and feel, if possible. You’re crawling between
the sheets every night and spending (hopefully!) at
least 8 hours there, so make sure the material feels
great on your skin. If you’re shopping online, see if
there’s an option to go to the store to see and feel
the product before you buy it.
Go big. Today’s mattresses have more depth than
those in the past (and many have feather tops), so
consider going up a size when it comes to blankets,
duvets or comforters. If you have a queen bed, for
example, you might want to get a bit more coverage
with the king-size version of these items.
Think sustainable. Many of today’s consumers
are keen on eco-friendly fabrics, and if this is you,
there are a number of brands that offer organic and
even recycled linens that can help promote sustainability
and sound sleep.
For truly wonderful sleep that will make you
never want to get out of bed, the first step is to
explore luxury linens. So what are you waiting for?
Deep sleep awaits.
Backyard oasis designed for
three seasons of fun
For an active family of four, the decision to leave their idyllic Southern
California home—situated just a few minutes away from the beach—to
move back to the Midwest, was not an easy one. The lure of the Pacific
Ocean, palm-tree-lined streets, and weather which beckoned them outdoors,
were all perks that were tough to ignore. But ultimately, the desire
to be closer to family was the tipping point for Kelly and Joff Moine. ➻
housetrends magazine 2022 51

Joff is originally from the Columbus area, and Kelly grew up in Norwalk, Ohio. With much of their
extended family living in Ohio, including cousins to their daughters Madison and Taylor, the couple
made the decision to relocate from Santa Barbara to the Mason area in the summer of 2020. Their
choice was made despite the fact they were uprooting themselves from a community they loved.
“We made such good friends out there,” says Kelly. “It was really hard to leave our friends, the
beautiful year-round weather, and the nearby ocean.”
Another strong factor in favor of the move, Joff adds, was the idea that Taylor and Madison would
attend high school in Greater Cincinnati. “We have really great schools in this area,” he says. “You
don’t really appreciate them until you move elsewhere.”
2 The pool measures 20-feet by 40-feet
with a 12-foot square sundeck.
Moving on
Even though they were leaving the draw of the western
coastline behind, the Moine’s knew they still wanted outdoor
living to be a big part of this next chapter of their
lives.
So, when they were shown an expansive home with contemporary
vibes and a spacious back yard that bordered
Mason’s Heritage Club, they got excited about living on
the club’s golf course. Joff is an avid golfer and Kelly is
currently learning her way around the links. ➻
54 housetrends.com

Back to the water
Even before they moved into the home, the couple began plans to transform
their back yard into the oasis the family desired. They contacted Chris
Raines, owner of Garden Path Landscaping, the firm who designed a pool
for Joff’s business partner. As luck would have it, Raines and his crew were
the landscapers for the home’s previous owners and they knew the layout
of the property. Starting with phone conversations, the Moine’s communicated
their wishes, and Raines got busy with the design.
Going for a streamlined, modern look, Raines planned for an L-shaped
pool and a paver pool deck that leads to a stone seat wall, which doubles as
a retaining wall that was needed due to the tapered slope of the lot.
“Chris took control of everything,” Kelly says. “He designed the entire
area, and even came up with a design and colors for the pool’s liner.”
“The things we are able to do today with pool liners are incredible,” Raines
says. “We can customize the color, the pattern, and do just about anything
we want.”
Raines goes on to explain that choosing a vinyl liner is often a costdriven
decision, often resulting in a savings of about 50 percent compared
to gunite. But with the high-quality durable liners available today, he says,
“It’s kind of an even swap. Both require a similar amount of maintenance.”
Should a family invite a dog into the pool, as this family did with their
dog Maverick, nails aren’t a problem as long as the dog can easily walk out
of the pool, rather than scratch its way up the side walls.
So with that in mind, in the shallow end of the pool, a sundeck with water
just a few inches deep, was created to accommodate Maverick. “We didn’t
know if he could swim,” Kelly says. “It turns out he’s a great swimmer.”
“Sundecks are hot right now,” says Chris. “We rarely build a pool without
one. ➻ ”
Maverick strikes a pose near the firepit and palm tree planter.
A tropical touch
Plans called for a raised bed planter which holds something included
specifically to remind the family of their previous home—a
palm tree. With dramatic uplighting, the tree contributes to the
space’s tropical, resort style. It won’t survive harsh Cincinnati
winters, but Joff feels strongly enough about its charm, that he
says he’s happy to purchase a new one each spring.
1 A retaining wall doubles as seating—with
plenty of room for a crowd.
2 Shortly after the pool was completed,
the couple added this cabana for a bit of
relief from the sun. 3 The firepit, along
with the heated water in the pool, helps
extend the usage of this backyard oasis
well into the fall. 4 From the house, past
the pool, palm tree and firepit, there’s a
view of the 9th hole of Heritage Club.
56 housetrends.com

Launching with a luau
Construction began in early 2021 and wrapped up mid-
July. One week later the family christened the pool with a
luau party for 75 friends—accompanied by musicians on
steel drums and an acoustic guitar.
The family plans to keep the heated pool open each
year from early spring until the beginning of November.
And all four members have no doubt it will be well used
during those months.
Joff and I love to entertain,” Kelly says. “The more the
merrier!”
On dive-in movie nights, family and friends float on
rafts in the pool while movies play on a projection screen
placed nearby.
Following in her parents’ social footsteps, shortly after
the pool was completed, 16-year-old Taylor hosted her
entire field hockey team for a poolside party. Both daughters
are active in school athletics. Madison, 14, runs cross
country and track and plays on the volleyball and basketball
teams. Taylor is on the field hockey and track teams.
Even when it’s just the four of them, the family takes
great pleasure in their backyard oasis.
“It’s nice to be able to walk out the back door, swim,
tan or just hang out—in any weather,” Taylor says. And
her sister adds, “We do a lot of our schoolwork out here.”
Plus, both the girls want to stick around for the evening’s
entertainment: Dad doing cannonballs.
Joff, who in previous years has been known to paddleboard
in the Pacific, with the occasional shark nearby,
closes out the night with a series of high-splashing cannonballs
off the diving board.
Even though they’re using a different type of board
these days, this adventurous family has found a way to
gather with friends and family and create all kinds of
splashes in their own backyard.
let there be light
(and privacy!)
BY LEE RHODES
Bands of fabric in varying opacities transition past each other providing total light and privacy control in Allure Blinds from Lafayette.
When you think of window blinds and shades, you don’t necessarily think of beauty.
So, you might be surprised to learn that blinds can, in fact, function beautifully and
be beautiful. They cannot only create privacy and filter sunlight, but they can breathe
new (aesthetic) life into a room. Who knew?
We spoke with two expert window blind professionals who gave us the details on
creative blind solutions, what’s trending for 2022, and how technology and automation
play a role. ➻
housetrends magazine 2022 59

FORM AND FUNCTION
Aerolux Blinds and Shades is a
family-run window covering
manufacturer in the Dayton area.
They offer a wide variety of window
treatments, including their
best-selling combo blind-shade
known as Shadow Glide, which
gives new meaning to the marriage
of beauty and functionality.
Innovative yet surprisingly simple,
Shadow Glide sits snugly and
completely flush with the window
and differs from a traditional slatted
blind, being comprised of two
panels of alternating mesh and
translucent fabric. Manually, or
with a motorized feature, operated
remotely or with an app,
homeowners can manipulate the
amount of light passing through
the fabric to allow a preferred
amount of sunlight to fill the
space.
“The bright, clean, minimalistic
look of these blinds completely
transforms the look and feel of a
home,” says Sushmita Jain, owner
of Aerolux. “They can be adjusted
to allow all the light in or block it
out—or any interval in between.”
Slats Blind & Shutter Experts
in Cincinnati has a similar transitional
shade known as Allure that
is made of bands of opaque fabric.
The look of transitional shades is
not only clean, but they require
virtually no maintenance, since
dust doesn’t fall or settle on vertical
surfaces. Slats co-owner Rudy
Forte, who started working at his
father’s drapery business as a kid,
likes them so much that he has
them throughout his own home
and his vacation home. ➻
OUTDOOR OPTIONS
Lest you think blinds are relegated to indoors, consider Aerolux’s outdoor
weather solution, the Monsoon Blind. As the name suggests, this solution,
which grew out of a need in the resort areas of the Maldives was designed to
take on Mother Nature.
“The challenge was to create something non-permanent that can be lowered
when inclement weather comes, but goes completely away when you don’t need
it, to give you an unobstructed view of your beautiful landscape,” says Jain. “It’s
made of clear PVC and pleats up like a Roman shade. It can completely close
an area to block rain, wind and, in these parts, snow, allowing homeowners to
extend the use of their outdoor space.”
While hotels and restaurants are snapping it up, the motorized Monsoon
Blind, is just as viable for home use, allowing homeowners to protect their
outdoor living spaces from the elements and enjoy them long after the change
of seasons.
system for precise light control. Normandy Shutters by Norman. 3 Roman or Roller
shades can be custom designed from a collection of over 2,300 fabrics in the Interior
Masterpieces collection from Lafayette. 4 Roller shades are available in a variety
of shapes, patterns and styles. The opacity can be customized from 1% to 10% in
STILL-POPULAR STANDARDS
We’d be remiss not to mention the mainstays of the blind world, and the following remain quite popular: sun-deflecting,
energy-saving screen shades; sleek roller shades; Roman shades with waterfall pleats; and elegant, enduring plantation
shutters, all customizable. Regarding the latter, “The louvres can range from two inches to up to four and half inches, for
a beachy look,” says Forte. “They also have them with hidden tilt rods [or no tilt rods] so there’s no vertical sight line and
you don’t have to dust around the rod.”
This feature is just one of many modern conveniences in the blind world. It wasn’t so long ago that people who wanted
motorized blinds had to have them installed as their home was being built, with wires running up to the windows. Today,
rechargeable battery-operated motors allow homeowners to easily control their blinds, making installation a cinch and
cords non-existent, and smart technology means you can adjust your blinds from a mobile device app or your voice. “You
can be in Tahiti and can make it look like you’re home,” explains Forte. ➻
ADAPTIVE SOLUTIONS
Also, in keeping with the times are
the pandemic’s effects on the industry—yet
some of these effects are,
thankfully, positive. First, people are
finding opportunities to invest in
their homes, including in window
treatments, whether incorporating
new, creative solutions, or finally getting
around to fixing that one pesky
broken blind. Not only that, but businesses
have changed the way they do
business.
“We’re measuring virtually and
designing virtually,” explains Jain.
“Over Facetime, Zoom, or by phone,
I meet my client and can tour their
home to get an appreciation for their
color palette and preferred style, and
even take measurements. Customers
love this option during the pandemic.”
Finally, if you’re considering making
a change to your home’s blinds
or shades and you want to make your
dollars stretch, she recommends that
you beautify the main living areas
first (versus areas such as garages,
laundry rooms and even kids’ bedrooms,
where they often don’t even
open their blinds). In any case, enjoy
the aesthetic appeal—and amazing
functionality—of what today’s blinds
have to offer.
