In fact, the relationship of the police officer with the department he/she is part of plays a priority role. Very often, police officers who are exposed to physical and emotional overload and who suffer from the accumulation of these stressful events come to have problems with insomnia, depression and substance abuse. The individual may experience nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue, apathy, nervousness, insomnia, headache, gastritis, cardiovascular disorders, sexual difficulties, cynicism, anger, indifference, depression, guilt, suspicion and paranoia, isolation, low self-esteem and blaming colleagues. Burnout does not happen suddenly but manifests itself in different stages, through a gradual loss of interest in one’s work, apathy and exhaustion to the point of energy depletion and other physical and psychological problems. Burnout syndrome can affect the health of the individual police officer but also the effectiveness of the entire police department to which one belongs and should always be diagnosed and treated promptly by experienced psychologists. The role of the Psychologist is crucial for the prevention of burnout by advising on organisational changes to reduce work-related stress and by offering support and counselling to police officer with burn-out symptoms. It is important to use preventive strategies and encourage teamworks with experienced psychologists who can intervene to correct risky situations. Asking for help is, however, the first step to cope with what people are experiencing and become aware of their condition. Marianna Chessa is an italian Psychologist, specialised in Psychotherapy and Forensic Criminology. She is an expert therapist in the E.M.D.R. technique and other techniques useful in the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. She also deals with the treatment of burn-out syndromes occurring in military and police environments. She is a founding member and board member of THE ITALIAN THIN BLUE LINE ONLUS which is a psychological support community for police officers and italian military. She also runs training courses for police and military personnel on psychological and technicalprofessional issues. She has been carrying out scientific researches on topics related to Police Psychology for many years.
