Swiss Post and the art scene
in Switzerland
More than a museum: the new Zentrum Paul Klee in Berne. Photo: ZPK
Dear Reader
At first sight, the Post and art don’t seem
to have much in common. But when
you think that nearly every stamp is a
miniature work of art, the link becomes
obvious. Swiss Post’s Schönburg headquarters,
with Bernhard Luginbühl’s
statue of William Tell in its forecourt, is
one of the landmarks of Berne, way up
above the Bear Pit. And Swiss Post
decided to become a founding partner of
the Zentrum Paul Klee for the following
three reasons, among others:
With his visual imagery, Paul Klee is
one of the most outstanding and
distinctive Classic Modernists. He aptly
personifies the resolve to renew and
change things, which is also indispensable
for today’s Post in a globalized
economy.
Renzo Piano’s building is a superb
example of leading-edge, innovative
architecture, meeting all the requirements
for a new urban landmark in the federal
capital, that creates an architectural
link between Berne’s past in the shape
of its cathedral, the Federal Houses
of Parliament and the architecture of
the future. Tradition, receptiveness
to new ideas, and creative drive are also
important elements in Swiss Post’s
business strategy.
Paul Klee was a customer of the Post:
In his diary for June/July 1904, he wrote:
“I went to Thun with Brack, and from
there by postbus to Amsoldingen-
Stocken.” Then he climbed the Stock-
horn on foot: “You get to the summit…
virtually on all fours.” Even in those days,
the Post and its modern means of
transport helped city-dwellers to get out
into the country and to the mountains
quickly.
I am delighted that Swiss Post has been
allowed to design and issue a special
stamp with motifs by Paul Klee and even
more so that our cultural sponsoring has
made a contribution to the creation
of this magnificent edifice for the benefit
of art lovers in Switzerland and throughout
the world. I am confident that this
Zentrum has the potential for a great
future, because, just as Klee himself
was a gifted musician besides being an
artist, it will be home to other forms
of artistic expression in addition to the
pictorial arts. So once again, stamps,
as a miniature art form, have embarked
on an interesting and mutually stimulating
symbiosis involving painting, the
graphic arts, sculpture and architecture.
Berne
“Wonderful symphony – merci”, it says in the stamp issue of 8 March 2005.
The special stamp based on an idea of Stephan Eicher, the world-famous
Swiss musician, turns the spotlight on the Matterhorn, the epitome of Swiss
mountains. Or, to be more accurate, on its geological origin. Unusual, exciting,
surprising – the Matterhorn is mostly of African origin (See article in
<strong>Focus</strong> 1/2005).
The Matterhorn is also honoured in the
“Swiss Mountains” set which swissmint –
the official Mint of the Swiss Confederation
– launched last year. Immortalized
artistically, majestically and comprehensively
in metal, it takes its place in
a traditional “gallery”, which began in
1936 when the Swiss Confederation
started issuing commemorative coins to
mark important historical and cultural
events or to honour major personages, as
well as typical examples of Switzerland’s
cultural and natural heritage.
Coins and stamps have twice been united
by Swiss Post in recent years: in 1998,
a numismatic letter was issued to mark
“150 Years of the Post”, and in 2002
for the Quatercentenary of Geneva’s
Escalade. Both issues were well received
by collectors – all the more reason to
combine metal and paper harmoniously
once again in a superb collector’s item.
The “Matterhorn” numismatic cover
consists of a block of four of the special
stamp “Wonderful symphony – merci” of
Stephan Eicher and the “Matterhorn”
commemorative bimetal coin with a legal
face value of CHF 10.00 designed by
Stephan Bundi from Boll near Berne.
And to cap it all, this numismatic cover
sports the appropriate Zermatt cancellation
of 8 March 2005 – naturally with
the silhouette of the Matterhorn! Why
not enhance your collection with an
exceptional combination of legal tender
and postage, which will certainly give
you pleasure for years to come?
Swiss Design Classics Definitive Stamp
“Fixpencil” – a classic with timeless good looks
8
The “Swiss Design Classics” set goes
on growing with a world-famous
addition – the practical propelling
Fixpencil made by Caran d’Ache,
which stars on the new self-adhesive
CHF 2.20 definitive.
Many world-famous design classics
were created in Switzerland, and their
aesthetic appeal and convenience of
use have stood the test of time.
The Fixpencil too is an article with a
long history. The pencil with lead refills
was invented in 1929 by a Geneva
engineer. A year later, Caran d’Ache put
the pencil on the market and registered
“Fixpencil” as a trademark, and this
first spring-clutch all-metal mechanical
pencil became an immediate success
all over the world.
In the meantime, millions of copies of the
elegant, light and functional Fixpencil,
which was awarded the “Swiss Quality”
seal of approval, have been sold. It
has lost nothing of its attractiveness in
Business sheet
The trademark hexagonal
shape: Top, a 1929-vintage
Fixpencil model. Below,
one from the 1940s and three
current-design propelling
pencils.
Stamp booklet
all these years. The Fixpencil is produced
in various models to fit leads of different
diameters. Current models have a builtin
sharpener and a patented push-button
mechanism to hold the lead firmly in
place. The colours are sprayed on using
electrostatic powder coating which
makes the leadholder even harderwearing.
With its user-friendly pushbutton
mechanism, the pencil almost
works by itself. The hexagonal holder
shape, a hallmark of Caran d’Ache,
discreetly underlines its relationship to
the firm that put it on the market.
The Fixpencil had a lasting influence on
the technology and design of writing
utensils. Although it was invented over
70 years ago, this Design Classic is
still ultra-modern and forms a fitting
conclusion to the definitive set presenting
a total of six Swiss Design articles from
past decades.
Special Pro Patria Stamps “Historical monuments
of Switzerland”
In honour of the Society for the History of Art in Switzerland
The Society for the History of Art
in Switzerland (SHAS) celebrates its
125th anniversary this year. In
honour of this Society, which has
done so much for the cultural
heritage of our country, Swiss Post
and the Swiss Pro Patria Foundation,
in close consultation with the SHAS,
have selected four major historical
monuments for this year’s stamps.
Through its publications, the Society for
the History of Art in Switzerland makes
architecture and art accessible in innumerable
ways. If you’re travelling through
Switzerland, you’ll always have reliable
information to hand in the shape of
the Society’s art guides. And if you want
to study Switzerland’s cultural landscapes
in depth, its basic reference texts – the
“Kunstdenkmäler der Schweiz” (Art
Monuments of Switzerland) or the
“Inventar der neueren Schweizer
Architektur 1850–1920 INSA” (Inventory
of Modern Swiss Architecture) – are
just what you need.
South view of the Rotach houses, Wasserwerkstrasse 27, 29 and 31, in Zurich
One of the highpoints of anniversary year
2005 will be the publication of the first
two volumes of the four-volume new
edition of the “Kunstführer durch die
Schweiz” (Guide to Art in Switzerland).
This standard work will contain everything
worth knowing about historical
monuments in Switzerland and their
appointments. 20th century architecture
has been systematically included for the
first time. With its clear design and
exhaustive index, the guide will be not
only a reliable reference tool but also
a practical travelling companion.
The Swiss Pro Patria Foundation is
promoting the publication of the new
“Guide to Art in Switzerland” both
morally and financially.
Rotach houses, Zurich
“Liberated living” in modern
architecture
The model houses in Wasserwerkstrasse in Zurich,
also known as Rotach houses, are among the
best-known and most significant examples of
“New Architecture” in Switzerland. Inspired by
the successful German Werkbund settlement at
the Weissenhof in Stuttgart (1927), the housing
exhibition “Das neue Heim II” (New Home II) opened
in Zurich in 1928. An exhibition in the Museum of
Decorative Arts and a purpose-built model settlement
were intended to familiarize the Zurich public with
the ideals of the “New Architecture” and modern
living. Zurich architect Max Ernst Haefeli won a
competition to build the small model settlement in
Wasserwerkstrasse on the right bank of the River
Limmat. During the exhibition, the four model
apartments for middle-class families were open to
the public.
The model settlement, consisting of three staggered
housing units, faces south, towards the Limmat
and the Platzspitz park. Each unit has large southfacing
windows, balconies, a roof-top terrace and a
garden. When they were built, the model houses
in Zurich were the epitome of the “liberated”
living propagated by the international Modernist
movement, satisfying the criteria of functional
architecture and the call for light, air and sun in
housing construction without, however, going to
extremes.

Monte Carasso Abbey, TI
The sensitive restoration and
conversion of an abbey complex
Monte Carasso is a village of about 1600 inhabitants
on the outskirts of Bellinzona. Since 1993, the local
elementary school has been housed in the premises
of a former 15th-century Augustinian abbey in
the village centre. The conversion and exemplary
restoration of the abbey complex, including the
church of Saints Bernardino and Girolamo were part
of a large-scale project to restructure the village
centre of Monte Carasso.
The chief architect was Luigi Snozzi, a leading
representative of the contemporary Ticino architectural
scene. For him, building is a public affair, and
his work shows a profound respect for the history of
the particular environment, combined with an
intense determination to make a radically modern
architectural impression. Snozzi’s buildings are
characterized by a predilection for the sensitive and
intelligent use of fairfaced concrete, and his
conversion of Monte Carasso became world-famous.
This urban planning project is unique in Switzerland
and could not have been implemented without
the openness and active cooperation of the local
authorities and residents.
Pro Patria collection 2005: Social projects with a cultural link
Each year, the Pro Patria Foundation
Council decides on the main aim of
its annual collection, taking care to
develop or spotlight new and attractive
themes, in the spirit of the Foundation’s
purpose.
The 2005 Pro Patria campaign is specifically
aimed at helping to translate into
action for the first time the Foundation’s
newly formulated social thrust, namely
the promotion of selected projects
which ideally combine the social and
the cultural. Support is mainly given to
original, innovative and trail-blazing
projects, a combination in which the
Foundation Council sees a special challenge.
Pro Patria campaigns aim to publicize
matters of public interest while collecting
funds to implement selected projects.
For its collections – Pro Patria stamps
with surcharges for the benefit of the
Foundation, and the National Day
(1 August) badge – the Foundation can
rely on an extensive network of volunteers
throughout Switzerland. Indeed,
Pro Patria has owed its success since
St. Katharinental Abbey,
Diessenhofen TG
From a Dominican abbey to
a rehab clinic
The St. Katharinenthal convent in Diessenhofen on
the Rhine was founded in the late Middle Ages. In
1267, the German theologian, philosopher and
Dominican monk Albertus Magnus consecrated the
first abbey church of the Dominican order established
on that site. In the 18th century, under Prioress
Josepha von Rottenburg, the abbey went through
internal reform and experienced a new heyday: From
1714 to 1718, Austrian baroque architect Franz Beer
constructed the new abbey complex, and this
was followed in 1732–38 by the rebuilding of the
St. Katharinental Abbey complex in Diessenhofen TG Photos: Heinz Dieter Finck, Zurich
12
abbey church by Johann Michael II. Beer (from
plans by Franz II. Beer and Caspar Moosbrugger).
The church is regarded as one of the most balanced
creations of Austrian-Swiss baroque. In its interior,
architecture, stuccowork, carving and painting marry
to form an impressive work of art. A magnificent
organ loft with a richly decorated balustrade spans
the entrance nave. The organ itself was installed
in 1733–41. The superb ceiling and mural paintings
are by Jakob Karl Stauder, as is the painting on
the high altar.
The abbey was deconsecrated in 1869, and a new
social use was found for the convent and its
outbuildings. They were once used as the Canton
Thurgau old people’s and nursing home, and today
they house the Thurgau St. Katharinental rehabilitation
clinic. The most recent restoration of the
former religious institution complex and abbey
church was carried out in 1974–89, in cooperation
with the cantonal office for the preservation of
historical monuments.
Palais Wilson, Geneva
An important historical testimony to
international life in Geneva
Palais Wilson – once the Hôtel National and the first
headquarters of the League of Nations – has housed
the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner
for Human Rights since 1998. The building is made
available to the UN, the successor to the League
of Nations, by the Swiss Confederation. The Hôtel
National was given its present name in 1924, after
the death of US President and Nobel Peace Prize
Winner, Thomas Woodrow Wilson, who had played
a decisive part at the 1919 peace conference in the
establishment of the League of Nations. Geneva
was chosen as the headquarters of this first worldwide
organization, which bought the hotel in
September 1920.
Jacques-Elisée Goss had constructed the building in
1874/75 shortly before the Grand Théâtre. The
largest and most prestigious hotel in Geneva was
erected on the embankment on the righthand side of
the lake. The rational severity of its structure and
spatial division was relieved by colonnaded porches
in front of the magnificent facade, which gave onto
an English-style esplanade with a balustrade. After
1905, Marc Camoletti modernized the hotel, and in
1919/20, together with his son, converted the
skylights into loggias and renovated the interior to
provide modern comforts.
The League of Nations moved in in October 1920. In
1931, Adolphe Guyonnet constructed an avantgarde
pavillion, in which the Disarmament Conference
was held in February 1932. The expansion of the
international organizations made it necessary to build
the Palais des Nations. In 1936, the League of
Nations moved and sold the Palais Wilson, which had
become too small for it, to the Swiss Confederation
and the Canton of Geneva. The premises were
then rented to various institutions and private individuals.
The building was damaged by fire in 1985 and 1987,
and the second fire destroyed the Disarmament
Conference pavillion. As the future Human Rights
House, the building was renovated by the architects
Erbeia, Morel und Kössler and newly inaugurated
in 1998.

Stopping for a bite at the Post? A close look
at Swiss gastronomy
You’ll find a delicious risotto at the
“Della Posta” in Ronco, Surselvaner
Capuns at the “Posta veglia” in Laax,
a Rifferswiler Schüblig from its own
butcher’s at the “Zur Post” restaurant
in Rifferswil, or perhaps you’d prefer
filets de perche at the “Le Relais de
la Poste” in Grandvaux? But, if you’re
looking for a meal on your travels,
you’re more likely to land in a
“Bahnhöfli” or “Rössli” as the 250
restaurants with “Post” in their name
are only the third most common
among Swiss-German hostelries.
And it wasn’t in a “Post”, but in “The
Olive Shop” in Zurich that I met Suad
Sadok, who was born in Istanbul (Turkey)
in 1939. At his grandfather’s, a keen
stamp collector, he discovered from
scrutinizing stamps that coffee beans
must come from Brazil. In 1961, with
the money obtained partly from the sale
of his stamp collection, he came to
Switzerland. In Zurich, he worked his way
up from being a porter at the erstwhile
Hotel Carlton Elite to General Manager
of Mövenpick Hotels Switzerland and
later, as Chairman of the Board of the
Swiss Restaurant Car Company, he made
Swiss Railways’ restaurant cars a success
again. In 1974, he obtained Swiss citizenship.
Gastronomy and culinary delights
have always played an important part
in his life. So what does Suad Sadok
think of Swiss gastronomy?
14
Eating culture:
a fascinating coexistence
When I first emerged from Zurich
main station over forty years ago, “ I immediately felt at home, because I
almost tripped over a magnificent display
of sweet peppers, courgettes and other
vegetables, just like in my homeland.
I must admit I was a bit surprised not
to have stumbled over chocolate and
cheese, the culinary symbols of Switzerland
beyond its borders. At the time, I
couldn’t quite get it straight.
So gastronomy – as seen in Switzerland,
especially in recent years, and just
about everywhere – can’t therefore be
classified. In my experience, there is
no such thing as a purely “Swiss gastronomy”.
On the other hand, a unique and
fascinating range of the most varied
eating cultures has been grafted onto the
roots of the honest local cuisine and
wines. Given the culinary experiences
which the newly mobile Swiss have
gathered abroad, as well as the range
of nationalities in Switzerland, this is
actually not so surprising.
Yet it still holds true that a foreigner, as
I once was in Switzerland, can easily
access Switzerland through its gastronomy,
if he wants to and tries hard
enough. The image of Switzerland
reflected in its gastronomy, as I have seen
it for years, contradicts all the stereotyped
conceptions people may have
about the Swiss in relation to their basic
conservatism, lack of creativity or their
timidity in dealing with other cultures
and customs. At the same time, however,
it confirms the traditional values which
also make up the image of Switzerland:
punctuality (pub closing times, where
they still exist, are still a bit like the
departure time of a mainline train),
sound, but sometimes a bit rigid, good
but expensive. Gastronomy as the best
of all worlds in Switzerland? Hardly.
But it will undoubtedly be a world,
which, despite all the necessary changes,
will, over the next few decades, remain
a constant in an economy that
will continue to be unsettled.
”
Cross-border influences
Annette Maïga, the Bernese graphic
artist who designed this year’s Europa
stamp, wants to bring out the quality
of Swiss gastronomy with its cross-border
influences – delectable cuisine should
delight and pamper the guest. A festively
decorated table plays an equally
important part in setting out on a
culinary journey of discovery in pleasant
surroundings, if a meal is to be a sensual
experience.
Each country has its own culinary
specialities which are just waiting to be
discovered and enjoyed. So why not
allow ourselves to be surprised by
Ticinese, Grisons or delicacies from other
countries and regions! Buon appetito,
Special Stamps Felix the Bunny
His letters from all over the world fill entire books
Felix is soft and cuddly, has long
ears and hops through town
and country at any time, not just
Easter. This bunny is extremely
adventurous, travels widely and
writes lots of interesting letters
that fill entire books. It is really no
exaggeration to say that fluffy
Felix is an international celebrity –
who is now to star on stamps for
the first time.
It all began in 1994. Children’s book
author Annette Langen and illustrator
Constanza Droop brought the cuddly
bunny with the itchy feet, together with
his girlfriend Sophie, to life in their first
joint book “Briefe von Felix” (Letters
from Felix), published by Coppenrath-
Verlag. His first trip took Felix to the big
cities of London, Paris, Rome, Cairo
and New York, and he recounted his
adventures to his girlfriend back home
in a steady flow of letters. Writing about
London, he mentions a big palace with
a lot of men in funny hats standing in
front of it, and in Paris he writes that the
bread is as long as a broom-handle, and
that men play with iron balls in the park.
From Africa, he reports about striped
horses, called zebras, and in New York he
was greatly impressed by a green figure
as big as a house in a long dress and
holding a torch.
16
Felix – educational, but not
didactic
Back home, the eight-year-old girl
follows the travels of her beloved bunny
and learns a lot about the sights,
customs and traditions of each country.
Educational fun for readers young
and old! The humorous and informative
letters are an integral part of the
books. The envelopes stuck into the
books contain “real”, prettily decorated
letters. And some of them also include
a surprise, which makes for twice as
much fun.
Wherever and
however Felix
travels, he writes
letters to his
girlfriend Sophie.
Since February 2005, Felix has even
been a movie star, thrilling cinema
audiences in Switzerland and abroad
with his adventures.
Felix in Switzerland
But even in miniature, the bunny cuts a
fine figure! From 10 May, Felix will
appear on two colourful stamps in
Switzerland. Accompanied by goats, he
wanders in traditional costume through
the charming landscape of Appenzell
in Eastern Switzerland, a picturesque
region with isolated farms nestling
among gentle hills. And then he’s sailing
on the back of a proud swan over the
blue water of Lake Geneva to Chillon
Castle near Montreux. The castle, built
on a rocky island with its high walls
towering skyward, was once the summer
residence of the Counts of Savoy. And,
since a visit to Switzerland has to
include a trip to dizzying heights, Felix,
complete with his trademark checked
rucksack, rides a chairlift to a mountain
top with a wonderful panorama, where
he blows with bulging cheeks into a
long alphorn.
The amusing motifs “Appenzellerland”
and “Chillon Castle” were specially
drawn by Constanza Droop for the
Swiss stamps. “Felix and the Alphorn”
on the first-day cover and the picture
postcard are also her work. The freelance
illustrator lives with her family in
Germany and regularly spends her
holidays in Switzerland. In addition to
the Felix books, she also draws the
delightful bunny for all kinds of useful
and decorative articles. These superior
products retail under the “Die Spiegelburg”
label.
Writing letters
One terrific effect is that Felix helps
people discover the pleasure of writing
letters. Who doesn’t like finding a
cheery envelope in the letter-box in the
morning? Where does the foreign stamp
come from? One thing is for sure! With
Felix on the envelope or paper, only
special, personal letters will be sent.
And that’s why there is great anticipation
ahead of Felix’s seventh book “Spannende
Briefe von Felix” (Exciting letters
from Felix), out this autumn.
May Felix never run out of places to go
to, and may his marvellous letters never
end. Maybe he’ll find his way to you
tomorrow – on a stamp!
Felix has brought a few ideas back from his many travels on
how to play the well-known board game “Ludo” in a slightly
Sophie’s letter-box as fast as possible. But all sorts of things can
happen to the letters on the way… Dice and letters/counters
are made of wood, nicely finished and solid. Have fun!
Special Stamp Zentrum Paul Klee Berne
A dynamic monument with international appeal
Zentrum Paul Klee. View of the main façade during construction work. Photos: Erwin Schenk, ZPK
The Zentrum Paul Klee in Berne opens its doors on 20 June 2005 to art
and culture lovers from all over the world. The focus will be on Paul Klee
(1879–1940), one of the most important artists of the 20th century. The
Zentrum, built by Renzo Piano, gives Paul Klee a dynamic monument with
international appeal in the city where this German national spent fully
half of his life. A good 40 percent of the nearly 10,000 paintings in his
oeuvre, i.e. about 4000 oils, water-colours and drawings, as well as archives
and biographical material, can be assembled in this new complex.
Biography of Paul Klee
The stamp shows two Paul Klee works, “Monument
im Fruchtland” (Monument in Fertile
Country, 1929) and “Breitohrclown” (Big-eared
Clown, 1925), and the “Flying Carpet” computer
drawing, symbolizing the architecture of the
Zentrum Paul Klee.
The Zentrum Paul Klee will not be a
traditional art museum. The aim is for it
to be a leading international competence
centre focusing not just on research,
but also communicating and presenting
the person and the life and work of
Paul Klee, as well as its impact. In relation
to Paul Klee’s many-faceted artistic
activity, the Zentrum will therefore not
confine itself to showing Klee’s paintings,
but will also be a platform for music,
theatre, dance, literature and forms of
artistic expression encompassing several
genres.
As he says himself, award-winning Italian
architect Renzo Piano didn’t design a
theatre, dance, literature, the theory
of art and the presentation of art do
not just exist side by side in the Zentrum
Special Stamp Football for the visually impaired
The Euro 2008 football championship
on the philatelic horizon
More than half a century after the
1954 world football finals, Switzerland
again takes centre stage as
the organizer of a major football
event.
Switzerland will partner Austria in
organizing the 13th European Football
Championships in 2008. The two
countries will split the 31 matches to
be played between 7 and 29 June 2008
on a 15 to 16 basis. Belgium and the
Netherlands set a precedent for successful
two-country organization of the event
when they hosted it in 2000.
A four-piece football
jigsaw
Swiss Post is tackling the topic in four
phases, starting in 2005. The whole is
arranged as a jigsaw puzzle. When
assembled, the four “pieces”, make up
a picture of a football, measuring
about 35 square centimetres. But the
individual pieces don’t just show leather
and seams – they include pictures of
the four types of soccer:
2005 Football for the visually impaired
 2006 Youth football
 2007 Women’s football
 2008 Men’s football
The four-stamp set is being launched
with the usual spring stamp issue in 2005
(10 May), and is scheduled to close with
the last issue one month prior to the
Euro 2008 kick-off at Berne’s Wankdorf
Stadium on 7 June 2008. The Euro 2008
jigsaw puzzle – or mosaic, whichever
way you want to look at it – is sure to be
a “must” for all collectors of sports
stamps. In fact, we wonder whether
these four issues might not provide the
inspiration for starting a football stamp
collection, because designs featuring
this attractive sport will be further
spotlighted at international level with
the 2006 World Football Championships
in Germany.
Fans of the Swiss national football team
under manager Köbi Kuhn will also no
doubt be among the collectors of the
new stamps. As organizers of Euro 2008,
neither Switzerland nor Austria have
to worry about qualifying for the event –
they do so automatically – but they
will have to battle for a place in the 2006
World Football Championships, like all
the rest.
Stamp with football for
the visually impaired
Most people are probably not aware
that the wide range of sports for the
disabled also includes football. Obviously,
blind people can’t play football, but
visually impaired, football-loving sportsmen
can, despite their greatly reduced
vision. At the moment, there are
admittedly not many leagues, but in
recent years the sport has spread
throughout the world, and several
European and World Championships
have already been held: Euro 1997 in
Barcelona, 1999 in Porto, 2001 in Paris,
2003 in Manchester, 1998 World
Championship in Campinas (Brazil), 2000
in Jerez (Spain), 2002 in Rio de Janeiro,
plus 2004 in England. And in the 2004
Paralympics in Athens, there was an
Olympic champion in this discipline for
the first time. As in top-class soccer, two
of the best-known footballing countries
met in the final, with Brazil beating
Argentina 3–2 on penalties when the
Sheetlet
game ended 0–0 after going into extra
time.
How do the visually impaired play football?
They play five-a-side on a small
field. The goalkeeper is fully sighted,
while the team coach stands behind the
goal, from where he is allowed to shout
instructions to the forwards.
Stamp Booklet
Congratulations
Following the two stamp booklets
by Bernadette Baltis with ladybirds
and clover leaves, the “Congratulations”
series for marking happy
events is being continued with
stamps by a new designer. The stamp
booklet in the same format as its
two predecessors takes a new look
at the design of the stamps as well as
at the form of the label.
Sandra Schlapbach, the designer of the
stamp booklet, has interpreted the
“Congratulations” theme in a unique
way – the merrily dancing yellow
butterflies symbolizing freedom and the
joys of life are intended to speed many
happy wishes into letter-boxes. And
the sun’s rays add a complementary
touch of warmth.
“Subjective well-being”
But what does it mean to be happy?
Happiness is both a feeling and a
condition a person finds himself in.
Being happy is characterized by a general
24
and often unconscious sense of wellbeing.
What counts with these feelings
is not objective facts but the subjective
perception, so scientists studying
the phenomenon of happiness prefer the
term “subjective well-being”. Psychologists
define happiness, among other
things, as the feeling of the absolute
harmony of our consciousness or as “the
continuing perception of one’s own life
as fulfilled, meaningful and pleasant”
(David Myers).
One is tempted to believe that well-being
depends to a large extent on external
circumstances, above all material values
and money. However, studies show that
happiness can be bought only to a
limited extent. Even the philosophers of
the ancient world disagreed on this
matter; some believed that happiness
consisted of sensuality and pleasure,
while others saw it as the result of
abstemiousness and frugality.
Dopamine, serotonin
and endorphins
From a medical and/or neurobiological
point of view, it is the neurotransmitters
dopamine und serotonin which are
involved in the positive feelings. The body
Happiness – an
indescribable
awareness of life.
Photo:
Dynamic Graphics
produces these neurotransmitters in
many different situations. They are
responsible for nerve cells sending the
“feel-good” message to the brain. In
this state of happiness, the body can
release other hormones such as oxytocin
and its own drugs – the so-called
endorphins, which trigger relaxation
and produce a feeling of bliss.
Sending happiness
Use this stamp for all kinds of good
wishes to bring a little happiness or
provide a bit of pleasure. The stamp is
suitable for celebrations such as
weddings, baptisms and birthdays, as
well as for personal get-well-soon
messages or good-luck missives prior to
exams. In addition to the ten stamps,
each booklet contains labels with
symbols which can be placed straight or
slanting next to the stamp, used to
close the envelope like a seal or as
an unusual letterhead. Give your imagination
free rein and redouble the impact
of your message!
The postcards now have a DataMatrix barcode
Adrian Frutiger:
Creator of countless fonts
Adrian Frutiger was born on 24 May
1928 in Unterseen near Interlaken in
Switzerland. After his schooling, he
worked as an apprentice typesetter at
the Otto Schlaefli AG printing works
in Interlaken from 1944 to 1948. He then
attended the Applied Arts School in
Zurich for three years before moving to
Paris in 1952 where he became artistic
director at the Deberny & Peignot letter
foundry. After ten years of successful
work, he struck out on his own, founding
a graphic workshop in Arcueil
near Paris together with André Gürtler
and Bruno Pfäffli.
Besides a large number of fonts, which
have since become known throughout
the world, he created publisher’s marks,
logos, house fonts and corporate images
for various publishers and companies.
For instance, he designed a new signage
system for Charles de Gaulle airport,
which developed into the “Frutiger”
font. Swiss Post was the first enterprise
in Switzerland to use this font – first for
work forged in five hundred years of
printing books and newspapers. This
framework is engraved in the reader’s
memory like a keyhole. The letter we
read is like a key that seeks and finds its
hole. If the font-designer’s imagination
the postbus service and later as the
house font for the whole enterprise. If
you drive through Switzerland today,
you can read signs in what may well be
Frutiger’s best-known font at every post
office and along the motorways.
His OCR-B standard font for automated
reading became the international
standard in 1973. Adrian Frutiger taught
for ten years at the Ecole Estienne in
Paris and at the same time gave many
lectures in all parts of the world. From
1963 to 1981, he was responsible for the
design and adaptation of typewriter and
composer fonts with IBM World Trade.
In 1968, Adrian Frutiger became a
consultant with D. Stempel AG in
Frankfurt am Main and hence with its
successor companies, such as Mergenthalter
Linotype, Linotype-Hell and what
is now the Heidelberg-Tochter Linotype
Library in Bad Homburg, for whom
Adrian Frutiger has now been a font
designer for over 30 years. During this
period, fonts such as Centennial,
Versailles, Frutiger, Avenir, Vectora and
many others were created.
diverges from the basic form, this causes
friction, frustration or illegibility.
The letters of our alphabet are built on
two basic principles. The dark lines mark
the limits of the internal and external
area of the individual letters. Through the
open spaces, light illuminates the letters
and the words. This is the only way the
word can be recognized. Clearly readable
print contains the secret of striking a
balance between light and dark.
In the two stamps, the internal areas
and spaces of the letters A and B have
been dismantled into their separate parts
and made visible as individual components,
which are placed in the background
as playful elements. Light floods
through the white surfaces giving the
stamps a luminous quality.
of a forgery-proof datamatrix code for
franking domestic letters and parcels as
well as international letters, direct from
the Internet. This franking method is
particularly suitable for companies, small
and medium-sized businesses, clubs,
organizations and anybody who regularly
28
sends out larger quantities of letters
and information.
Any commercially available PC (not
Macintosh) can be used for “WebStamp”
franking which can be printed out
direct on sheets of paper, envelopes and
labels using Microsoft Word and Excel
programs and inkjet or laser printers.
No special know-how is needed to install
or use this software, but a franking
credit has first to be set up. Billing is then
done automatically via the customer’s
Swiss Post Yellow Account. The built-in
franking log makes it possible to keep
track of what was franked when and
with how much. The annual licence
fee for using the WebStamp software is
90 CHF, but a special introductory rate
of 60 CHF applies until the end of 2005.
What does “Philately” actually mean?
The word has nothing to do with collecting
colourful postage stamps. Translated
word for word, it means “Friend of
exemption from payment” – from the
Greek philos = friend and ateleia =
tax free or franked. It was first used in
a newspaper article in 1864.
However, people had been looking for
an appropriate scientific term for some
time before that. Proposals included
strange labels such as “epistolofrankomarkomanie”,
timbrophily or timbrology.
Nowadays, people who busy themselves
intensively with stamp collecting are
known as philatelists. Philatelists know
the background to their stamps, the
stories centred around them, and their
special features.
Looked at from that point of view,
another definition of philately could
apply: “Love without end”, from the
Greek phil = love, a = without and
ielos = end.
