FALKLAND ISLANDS 819-OJ-85 FALKLAND ISLANDS
possible that this is the former 03 KJ 39 (see MoD notes below). 16 (F596D) is left hand drive. 12 (F773D) is
also left hand drive and was imported from Chile by a Stanley-based taxi company prior to use here. 1
(F200G, ex V352 OBA) is a Lincoln Destiny 100 8-seat stretched Limousine which was imported from the UK
in mid-2006 and was still current in 1/08. The gaps in the fleetnumbers relate to commercial vans and lorries,
although it is likely some other unknown PSVs have been operated.
LMA, Mount Pleasant. This was a joint venture by construction companies Laing, Mowlem and ARC to construct
the RAF Airfield at Mount Pleasant and the vehicles were used to transport workers within the site and to and
from Pioneer Camp at East Cove. The Bristols were the first full size buses on the islands and were prepared
for shipping by Leyland at Brislington. LRN 304J was numbered LB1 by4/85. LRN 282/4/7/94J were no
longer licensed in 4/85, although may physically have still existed at that stage. WHE 354J and CHE 376K
were renumbered LB17, LB14 respectively in 5/85. CHE 372/7/8/84K were initially numbered YT2/4-6 and
were renumbered to LB13/5/6/8 in 5/85, but the order (before and after) is not known. After the contract, most
of the vehicles were buried in a landfill site near MPA, although at least one was shipped to Chile.
Napier, West Point Island. MCA 617P was used to transport visitors from a cruise ship landing stage on the
remote island to Devils Nose penguin and albatross colony. These duties were later undertaken by Land
Rovers, but the Bristol remained current but out of use in 1/05.
Stewart, Stanley. Bob Stewart apparently established the first civilian bus service between Stanley and MPA in
1985. F211A (ex HKU 795N) was current in 11/93, by this time wearing a blue livery replacing Wimpey’s
yellow colours.
Wimpey, Mount Pleasant. The Wimpey-Taylor Woodrow consortium had an Army works contract at Mount
Pleasant Airport from 11/84 and it seems likely that all three vehicles were exported to the Falklands at the
same time. Two vehicles were registered on the islands as WTW8 and WTW9 by the consortium but the order
is unknown. HKU 795N passed to PSA (The Property Services Agency – a division of the Department of
Environment) acting as a disposal agent.
Ministry of Defence. Military buses are covered in the British Journal, but courtesy of Stephen Barton and with
help from Alan Walker, a summary of vehicles known to have operated on the Falklands is as follows:
