DARWIN BUS SERVICE
The origins of the state operator in Darwin, capital of Northern Territories, lie with the NT Administration Bus
Service, which commenced running some school services in 1949. A small fleet of AEC Regal II, Bedford SB,
AEC Reliance, Austin 2.45F and Hino was built up over the years until full statehood was granted in 1978 and the
control of the operator passed to the NT Department of Transport and Works, as Darwin Bus Service. The first
new vehicles to be delivered were rare Leyland B21 (fitted with Detroit Diesel engines) and the only Leyland-DAB
artic to be delivered to Australia. The operator has continued to favour artics, in particular for the busy Route 10,
Darwin-Casuarina. As Darwin itself has expanded many routes have been contracted out to independents,
though only Buslink currently operates such tendered services. Both operators use the Darwinbus fleetname. The
Darwin Bus Service depot is on Iliffe Street, in the Stuart Park area of Darwin.
Here we list all the vehicles known to be operated by Darwin Bus Service, including those inherited in 1978.
Fleetnumbers don’t appear to have been introduced until later; initially the vehicle registrations were used to
identify the fleet, with vehicles being re-registered with ‘mo’ state numbers in 1978.
