PHILIPPIANS (4:4-9)<br />

BRETHREN, rejoice in the Lord always;<br />

supplication with thanksgiving let your<br />

GOSPEL READING<br />

JOHN (12:1-18)<br />

Six days before Passover, Jesus came to Bethany,<br />

where Lazaros was, whom Jesus had raised from the<br />

dead. There they made him a supper; Martha served,<br />

and Lazaros was one of those at table with him. Mary<br />

took a pound of costly ointment of pure nard and<br />

anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her<br />

hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the<br />

ointment. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he<br />

who was to betray him), said "Why was this ointment<br />

not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" This he said, not that he cared<br />

for the poor but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box he used to take<br />

what was put into it. Jesus said, "Let her alone, let her keep it for the day of my burial.<br />

The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me."<br />

When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came, not only<br />

on account of Jesus but also to see Lazaros, whom he had raised from the dead. So the<br />

chief priests planned to put Lazaros also to death, because on account of him many of the<br />

Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.<br />

The next day a great crowd who had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming<br />

to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying,<br />

"Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!"<br />

And Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it; as it is written, "Fear not, daughter of<br />

Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt!" His disciples did not understand<br />

this at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that this had<br />

been written of him and had been done to him. The crowd that had been with him when<br />

he called Lazaros out of the tomb and raised him from the dead bore witness. The reason<br />

why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign.

ἐκ νεκρῶν. ἐποίησαν οὖν αὐτῷ δεῖπνον ἐκεῖ, καὶ ἡ<br />

Μάρθα διηκόνει· ὁ δὲ Λάζαρος εἷς ἦν τῶν<br />

ἀνακειμένων σὺν αὐτῷ. ἡ οὖν Μαρία, λαβοῦσα λίτραν<br />

οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἵνα καὶ τὸν Λάζαρον ἀποκτείνωσιν, ὅτι πολλοὶ δι᾽ αὐτὸν ὑπῆγον τῶν<br />

᾿Ιουδαίων καὶ ἐπίστευον εἰς τὸν ᾿Ιησοῦν.<br />

Τῇ ἐπαύριον ὄχλος πολὺς ὁ ἐλθὼν εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν, ἀκούσαντες ὅτι ἔρχεται ᾿Ιησοῦς<br />

This week’s Sermon<br />

Palm Sunday<br />

Dear brothers and Sisters in Christ<br />

Today our lord walks triumphantly to the city of God.<br />

Today people are coming out to meet him who<br />

brings the Kingdom of God into this world. When we<br />

speak about the kingdom of God, sometimes we do not realize how difficult it is to embrace<br />

it in this world that is still very much ruled by the prince of this world. Most of the<br />

time, when we say Palm Sunday, we envision the entrance of our Lord to Jerusalem, but<br />

we miss what the evangelist tells us at the beginning of his Gospel. We sometimes do<br />

not realize that there was a great resistance even among his disciples. Sometimes we do<br />

not pay attention to the fact that as He was preparing to enter Jerusalem as the King of<br />

the Jews the local authorities were getting ready to arrest Him.<br />

The forces of this world were making one last attempt to overcome the Kingdom<br />

of God that could not be stopped. There is historical evidence that as our Lord was entering<br />

from the east gate of Jerusalem, proclaiming through the voices of children the<br />

triumph of the Kingdom of God, Herod was entering Jerusalem from the west gate, reminding<br />

us that we must choose between the two Kingdoms.<br />

Dear brothers and Sisters in Christ, our life is a continuous choice between God<br />

and the evil one, between this world and the Kingdom of God, between Christ and our<br />

own ego. Imagine you were in Jerusalem on the day of Palm Sunday. Who would you<br />

choose? Would you choose to be with Mary who brought costly nard oil to Christ, or<br />

with the local authorities preparing to arrest Him? Would you choose to be one of<br />

Herod’s soldiers or a disciple of Christ?<br />

These choices are not choices that happened centuries ago. These are choices<br />

that we face daily. Every morning when we wake up, we face the same choices. I pray<br />

that as difficult and as unattractive it may seem, we will always choose the Lord every<br />

minute of our life.

Αγαπητοί αδελφοί και αδελφές εν Χριστό<br />

Σήμερα ο Κύριός μας περπατά θριαμβευτικά στην πόλη<br />

του Θεού. Σήμερα οι άνθρωποι βγαίνουν για να<br />

γνωρίσουν αυτόν που φέρνει τη Βασιλεία του Θεού σε<br />

αυτόν τον κόσμο. Όταν μιλάμε για τη βασιλεία του<br />

Θεού, μερικές φορές δεν συνειδητοποιούμε πόσο δύσκολο είναι να την αγκαλιάσουμε σε<br />

αυτόν τον κόσμο που εξακολουθεί να κυριαρχείται από τον πρίγκιπα αυτού του κόσμου.<br />

Τις περισσότερες φορές, όταν λέμε την Κυριακή των Βαϊων, οραματιζόμαστε την είσοδο<br />

του Κυρίου μας στην Ιερουσαλήμ, αλλά δεν καταλαβαίνουμε αυτό που μας λέει ο<br />

ευαγγελιστής στην αρχή του Ευαγγελίου του. Μερικές φορές δεν συνειδητοποιούμε ότι<br />

υπήρχε μεγάλη αντίσταση ακόμη και μεταξύ των μαθητών του. Μερικές φορές δεν<br />

δίνουμε προσοχή στο γεγονός ότι καθώς ετοιμαζόταν να εισέλθει στην Ιερουσαλήμ ως<br />

Βασιλιάς των Εβραίων, οι τοπικές αρχές ετοιμάζονταν να τον συλλάβουν.<br />

Οι δυνάμεις αυτού του κόσμου έκαναν μια τελευταία προσπάθεια να ξεπεράσουν<br />

τη Βασιλεία του Θεού που δεν μπορούσε να την σταματήσουν. Υπάρχουν ιστορικές<br />

ενδείξεις ότι καθώς ο Κύριος μας εισερχόταν από την ανατολική πύλη της Ιερουσαλήμ,<br />

διακηρύσσοντας μέσω των φωνών των παιδιών το θρίαμβο της Βασιλείας του Θεού, ο<br />

Ηρώδης μπήκε στην Ιερουσαλήμ από τη δυτική πύλη, υπενθυμίζοντας ότι πρέπει να<br />

επιλέξουμε μεταξύ των δύο βασιλείων.<br />

Αγαπητοί αδελφοί στον Χριστό, η ζωή μας είναι μια συνεχής επιλογή μεταξύ του<br />

Θεού και του κακού, μεταξύ αυτού του κόσμου και της Βασιλείας του Θεού, μεταξύ του<br />

Χριστού και του δικού μας εγώ. Φανταστείτε ότι ήσασταν στην Ιερουσαλήμ την ημέρα<br />

της Κυριακής των Βαϊων. Ποιόν θα διαλέγατε; Θα επιλέγατε να είστε με τη Μαρία που<br />

έφερε το δαπανηρό λάδι στον Χριστό ή με τις τοπικές αρχές που ετοιμάζονταν να τον<br />

συλλάβουν; Θα επιλέγατε να είστε ένας από τους στρατιώτες του Ηρώδη, ή ένας μαθητής<br />

του Χριστού;<br />

Αυτές οι επιλογές δεν είναι επιλογές που συνέβησαν αιώνες πριν. Αυτές είναι<br />

επιλογές που αντιμετωπίζουμε καθημερινά. Κάθε πρωί όταν ξυπνάμε αντιμετωπίζουμε τις<br />

ίδιες επιλογές. Προσεύχομαι ότι όσο δύσκολο και όσο μη ελκυστικό μπορεί να φαίνεται,<br />

θα επιλέγουμε πάντα τον Κύριο κάθε λεπτό της ζωής μας.


Symeon the Holy Martyr, Bishop of Persepolis, and those with him<br />

This Martyr was Bishop of the royal cities Seleucia and<br />

Ctesiphon in Persia. As the number of Christians increased<br />

in Persia, building churches and appointing clergy, the Magi,<br />

guardians of the Persian religion, and the Jews, who also envied<br />

them, accused Symeon to Sapor II, King of Persia, saying<br />

that Symeon was a friend of the Roman Emperor and his<br />

spy. Then began Sapor's persecution of the Christians of Persia,<br />

about the year 343. The Magi together with the Jews destroyed<br />

the churches. Saint Symeon was brought before Sapor,<br />

and, refusing to worship the sun, was imprisoned. On<br />

Holy and Great Friday of that year, Saint Symeon was<br />

brought out of prison with a hundred others, bishops, priests,<br />

and deacons. As each was taken to be slain, Saint Symeon exhorted him to be of<br />

good courage; he was slain last of all. It is said that 1,150 Martyrs were slain; an<br />

innumerable multitude of Christians were slain throughout Persia during this persecution,<br />

among them Saints Acepsimas, Joseph, and Aethalas (see Nov. 3).<br />

Question from the Sunday School Students<br />

In the result of an open mic lesson that took place the past 2 Sundays, our children have<br />

presented us with excellent questions that create a wonderful learning opportunity, not<br />

only for Sunday school, but also for the entire community. Every Sunday Fr. Anthony<br />

will be selecting one question and answering it during children’s sermon right after the<br />

reading of the Gospel during Sunday Liturgies.<br />

1.) Why does it take longer to prepare Communion during Lent? We noticed that we<br />

sang the praises all the way to the end and repeated the slow version at the beginning<br />

until Father Anthony was ready.<br />

2.) Why are the royal doors closed during Lent?<br />

3.) Why does Father wear purple during Lent?<br />

4.) Are there different liturgical prayers during Lent?<br />

5.) Why do we fast from meat and dairy? Why is fish allowed?<br />

6.) Why is communion for Wednesday liturgy prepared on Sunday?<br />
