To provide continued, reliable financial support
primarily for those non-profit organizations set up by
Villa Charities Inc. which provide social assistance,
cultural development and recreational programmes to
the general community in the Greater Toronto Area.

Throughout its almost 40 year history, Villa Charities’ sustainability and expansion have been made possible by a
strong network of volunteers and donors who work tirelessly to ensure the organizational and operational needs of
the Villa Charities family are always met.
Another year has brought much growth and change for the Villa Charities family of organizations. Programs have
expanded, new partnerships have been celebrated and state-of-the-art facilities have become a reality. In September
2008, renovations were completed on a new daycare and new VITA/Mens Sana day program office at Centro
Abruzzo, which is part of Villa Charities’ Casa Abruzzo. And, the Venetian Ball, the most high-profile event
organized by Villa Charities Foundation, celebrated its 15th anniversary of bringing Venice to Toronto with a
glamorous evening at the Royal York Hotel.
Many worthwhile initiatives and events executed by all of Villa Charities’ affiliates, as highlighted in the 2008
Annual Report, have increased and strengthened the culturally sensitive ways in which we serve the greater
community.
All of the talented individuals who volunteer and work at each affiliate organization have helped to ensure that our
brand remains the benchmark for culturally sensitive care. Their dedication to supporting thousands of people in
need has contributed to our great success.
As we turn our attention to ensuring our legacy of amore continues and thrives for many years to come, we are
comforted and guided by the principles and passion instilled by all of those who championed our cause before us.
We extend our sincere gratitude to all of you who have helped Villa Charities become what we are today – the
largest Italian-Canadian charity in our community, serving thousands of people every day with amore.

Villa Charities is a unique organization that embraces its Italian-Canadian heritage and is proud to be recognized as
Canada’s largest Italian charitable organization. From our humble beginnings almost 40 years ago, our great leaders
and donors have called upon their unsurpassed passion for our cause to help us to continue our growth within the
community.
Our strength lies in part in the multi-faceted community developments that are based on time honoured traditions
focused around the family. Whether young or old, Villa Charities is an organization where children, adults and
seniors, bound together by their common heritage, remember the past, celebrate the present and embrace the
future.
An organization as diverse and large as Villa Charities requires consistent, reliable and sustainable financial support.
Villa Charities Foundation is charged with this task. Led by a volunteer Board of Governors consisting of many of
the original Villa Charities founders, the Foundation raises capital and operating funds to continue and expand the
work of Villa Charities. Funds are raised through our signature fundraising events as well as through the Amore
Campaign which was launched in 2004 to support the construction of our newest facility, Villa Colombo Vaughan,
and the refurbishment of our existing facilities.
Villa Charities is committed to ensuring the values of honesty, accountability and innovation are applied to every
business and service decision across the organization.
This Annual Report highlights the activities of the Foundation, gives you some insight into new developments at
our affiliate organizations and also acknowledges and thanks our numerous supporters who not only help us to
continue our special brand of care but inspire us to do better each day. We hope you will also be inspired by these
stories because, no matter what the size, a donation to Villa Charities means so much – it means life for VITA
members, culturally sensitive care for our seniors and culturally rich futures for gnerations to come.
We invite you to become more involved! The coming years will bring much change to the organization, but the
spirit of amore that mobilized an entire community almost 40 years ago will remain strong as a whole new
generation of leaders, donors and volunteers create their own legacy of love.

Who We Are
Villa Colombo, our flagship project, remains a pioneering long-term care facility, providing culturally
sensitive care to 391 seniors and community programs to thousands.
Villa Colombo Vaughan Di Poce Centre extends our trademark long-term care
model to York Region. Since its opening in October 2006, the 160-bed home has been providing quality care in a
culturally sensitive environment that honours the Italian heritage.
VITA Community Living Services provides services to individuals with intellectual
disabilities. VITA assists up to 400 adults through day programs and also provides 24-hour support for over 150
individuals in over 35 residential locations. Mens Sana provides housing and day support to adults with
schizophrenia and other mental health needs as well as educational and support groups for family members.
Columbus Centre is the community’s cultural piazza. The Centre provides cultural programmes for
thousands, and is home to Centro Scuola, the Carrier Art Gallery, Ristorante Boccaccio, Caffè Cinquecento, a day-
care and a vibrant fitness facility with 5,000 members.
The Villa Charities family also includes apartments for independent seniors: Caboto Terrace,
Casa DelZotto, and Casa Abruzzo, home to 1,000 self sufficient seniors!

Amore for those who've cared for us
Donor Spotlight: Pino Correale
A successful businessman. A seasoned marathon runner. A devoted husband, father and
grandfather. All of these sentiments can be used to describe Pino Correale. But it’s his
generosity and spirit that truly make him an asset to the community and to Villa Charities.
Pino has been involved with Villa Charities, in various capacities, for many years. He is a
long-time member of the Columbus Centre athletic facility, has raised funds for Villa
Charities by participating in the Mississauga Half Marathon and, most recently, helped to
spearhead Team Villa’s journey to Rome in the spring of 2009.
“I’ve always had a happy and pleasant experience with Villa Charities, and this motivated
me to help out,” explains Pino. “I am a member here at Columbus Centre because I love
the atmosphere – the city is fortunate to have a place like this.”
Pino’s ties to Villa Charities also extend to Villa Colombo. Years ago, Pino’s grandmother
lived at the Villa, and benefitted from our special brand of culturally sensitive care. In fact,
it was this special memory that inspired Pino to come forth with the idea of assembling a
team to raise funds for Villa Charities while participating in the Rome Marathon.
“I was at the Columbus Centre one day and I glanced towards Villa Colombo and I
thought of my nonna who used to live there,” explains Pino. “That’s when this idea came
to me – how can I raise more funds for a place that is so special to me and my family?”
The team successfully raised a significant amount of money and stuck it through to finish
the marathon on March 22, 2009 in Rome. But most importantly to Pino, the team’s
fundraising efforts will go to help an organization that has been there for his family, and
that will continue to be there for him one day.
“Looking at the older people being taken care of, wheeled around here (Columbus Centre)
and at Villa assures me that one day I will be taken care of,” says Pino. “We still hold
responsibility to take care of those who can’t do it on their own anymore – this gives me
instant gratification.”
Thank you Pino for your dedication and commitment to ensuring the work of Villa
Charities continues for generations to come!

Thanks to the generosity of his friends, Elio’s memory will
be celebrated for years to come with the creation of Elio’s
Café at Villa Colombo.
The passing of Elio Rosati in November 2008 was
marked with great sadness, but also great remembrance
of a man who gave so much to his family, his friends
and his community.
Thanks to the generosity of his friends, Elio’s memory
will be celebrated for years to come with the creation
of Elio’s Café at Villa Colombo.
When the news of Elio’s passing reached his closest
friends and family, they felt that the best way to honour
his memory was to make a donation to Villa Charities
Foundation and requested that his widow, Jackie Rosati
participate in deciding how the funds should be used.
Jackie suggested the donation be put towards a café
where residents, family members and staff could gather,
eat and enjoy each other’s company right inside Villa
Colombo – a place that held great significance for Elio
and his family.
Starting in the early 1970s, Mr. and Mrs. Rosati became
an integral part of Toronto’s Italian-Canadian community,
working hard alongside other community members
to build and sustain the dream of first Villa Colombo,
then Columbus Centre.
For over half a century, Elio selflessly supported the
community and the Villa Charities family of
organizations. Mr. Rosati was a governor for Villa
Charities from 1976 to 1987, holding the post of
Secretary and Treasurer for many of the formative
years, and is a life member of Villa Charities
Foundation. He and Jackie continued to be involved
in community organizations as both volunteers and
generous donors.
Mrs. Rosati still enjoys volunteering with the Villa
Colombo Ladies Auxiliary and Villa Colombo Volunteer
Services.
The completion of construction on Elio’s Café is
planned for the summer of 2009 and the Villa
Colombo community is excitedly awaiting the opening.
When complete, the café will be a place where small
children can enjoy time with their nonna or nonno,
where residents can bring their children during Sunday
visits and where the entire community can remember
the tireless devotion of Elio Rosati.

sure Elio’s Café will be a dream come true!

Enriching mind, body and soul
Donor Spotlight: Gina Scola
For Gina Scola, giving to Villa Charities is something inspired by the joy and love of her
daughter, Isabella Eva Cloutier.
As Gina and her husband Todd Cloutier celebrated the birth of their daughter Isabella in
2007, their thoughts turned to making a difference in the lives of children in their
community.
“My husband and I really wanted to associate ourselves with a charity that celebrated
children. So I contacted Laura Dal Bo for some guidance and she introduced us to the
Columbus Centre daycare, which was a pleasant surprise since I always associated Villa
Charities with senior care.”
In their daughter’s honour, Gina and her husband made the first capital pledge towards
Villa Charities’ newest daycare at Casa Abruzzo which opened in 2008. This much-needed
third daycare continues the 32-year tradition of the Columbus Centre Daycare – a unique
brand of childcare exclusive to Villa Charities that blends together programs that ensure
proper early childhood development while teaching Italian customs, traditions and language.
“I feel really excited about giving to a community organization – it’s local, it’s grassroots, it’s
right here in our community. Other charities may seem unreachable or unapproachable,
but that’s not the case with Villa Charities.”
A successful businesswoman, Gina is the Managing Director and Portfolio Manager at
Stonegate Private Counsel. With almost 20 years of financial industry experience, Gina has
held senior positions at prominent financial institutions and investment firms.
To celebrate the empowerment of women and to further assist the daycare, Gina founded
An Afternoon Affair – a Villa Charities Foundation event exclusively for woman that
combines traditional afternoon tea with presentations and interactions aimed at nurturing
the body, feeding the mind, and embracing all that is wonderful about being a woman.
Proceeds are directed towards the new daycare at Casa Abruzzo.
Gina and her family are also regulars at other Villa Charities’ events, including the Venetian
Ball and La Befana Brunch.
“I would encourage people who share the same values to give – Villa Charities values the
elderly, children, the community – these are values we can all support because they appeal
to all of us.”

making in the community!

The Hibloom Family honours a mentor, an inspiration and a
friend to the Columbus Centre - Dr. Joel Hibloom
is remembered.
The Columbus Centre Fitness Facility boasts over
5,000 members – each with their own passion, goals
and reasons for pursuing a healthy lifestyle.
Dr. Joel Hibloom’s passion for health extended beyond
his professional life as a doctor and was parlayed into
an almost 30 year membership at the Columbus
Centre. In fact, Joel was one of the first members to
sign up when the Columbus Centre opened its doors
in 1980.
Joel frequented Columbus Centre almost everyday –
working out and playing one of his favourite sports,
basketball. He helped his fellow members with their
health questions and even assisted under-privileged
youth who couldn’t afford their memberships. “Doc”
as he was known to his friends, took them under his
wing and coached them - many went on to win
basketball scholarships.
Joel wanted the Columbus Centre to be the best it
could be, and often made recommendations on how to
improve the facility. For Joel, Columbus Centre was
more than a gym – it was like a second home.
But when Joel passed away in 2005 after a lengthy
illness, the entire Columbus Centre family felt the
shock. While coming to terms with the death of a
long-time member, Foundation staff was approached
by Joel’s family who expressed their desire to
permanently honour his memory in a place where he
felt welcomed and at home.
After examining the needs of the facility with staff, the
Hibloom family decided to purchase new barbell racks
for the weight room.
The equipment was delivered to the Centre where
members are enjoying the new state-of-the-art
equipment. An intimate ceremony was held at
Columbus Centre with Joel’s family and friends to
unveil a dedication plaque that hangs in the gym and
pays tribute to Joel as a mentor, an inspiration, and a
friend.
Our thanks to the Hibloom Family for choosing to
honour ‘Doc’ in this very special way.

VITA
Making life more meaningful
Donor Spotlight: Lorne Glass
When Lorne Glass went on a tour of VITA’s facilities and met with some members, he
immediately saw a place where he wanted to put his donor dollars to work.
“I am involved with a few other charities but this is one you can put a face on by meeting
some of the members and seeing the work being done. What struck me the first time I
went on a tour of the facilities was that most of the members were happy and the staff was
very upbeat. This was in huge contrast from what I see with kids in group homes, some
foster homes and the staff there.”
A prominent lawyer in Toronto, Lorne was first introduced to VITA and Villa Charities
through friends who have a daughter that uses VITA’s services and programs. His friends
Rick De Vincenzo and Lou Cairo have also been involved with VITA for a long time and
invited Lorne to some special events where he met other donors and board members.
Lorne joined the VITA/Mens Sana Board of Directors in 2008 and became a monthly
donor, contributing to a cause that fills a gap he sees in his professional line of work.
From job training to crisis support, VITA is there for individuals with intellectual
disabilities when often times there is nowhere else to turn.
“My work is with children’s aid societies and kids who have been involved with them.
These kids often have severe problems that are dealt with to some extent while the children
are in care but when that ends at age 18 the child is often without help. VITA seems
to fill some of that need.”
The tangible signs that VITA is helping those who need it most in our community continue
to inspire Lorne to give – both his time and money.
“I think giving to VITA is very worthwhile because you can feel and see the help that is
being given to the members. You can feel the benefit.”

This new day program joins other locations across the
Greater Toronto Area that provide programs, job and life
training and other stimulating activities for adults with
intellectual disabilities.
VITA’s commitment to providing safety, practicing
respect and promoting community got a much needed
boost with the opening of the newly renovated day
programme space at Casa Abruzzo. The renovations
were done at the same time as renovations to the new
Columbus Centre Daycare, which shares the space, and
were completed in October 2008.
The space was completely reworked and VITA members
and staff have quickly adapted to the new environment.
This new day program joins other locations
across the Greater Toronto Area that provide programs,
job and life training and other stimulating activities for
adults with intellectual disabilities.
One of the more innovative aspects of the new space at
Casa Abruzzo is the Training Room – which was generously
made possible by a donation from the Gucciardi
Family. This area is where VITA can offer classes to its
members, staff and the community. VITA has already
received referrals to provide education to members and
to those from the community in the areas of Self
Esteem, Anger Management, Abuse Prevention and
Relationship Training.
“These courses have been well received internally but
have just recently been accessed by those outside of
VITA’s support programmes,” explains Manuela Dalla
Nora, Executive Director of VITA Community Living
Services. “Having the training room, a wonderful
space, available we are able to provide the perfect
atmosphere for offering the courses.”
The training room is also being used by George Brown
College to offer a certificate program on dual
diagnosis. Graduates, including general VITA staff, will
benefit from this enhanced training in working with
people who have both an intellectual disability and
mental health diagnosis.
In addition to the new training space, a special room
has been established for art therapy and VITA’s self
advocates, the Rights Committee, meet at the new Casa
Abruzzo program centre on a monthly basis.
The response from the community and VITA members
has been overwhelmingly positive and it’s safe to say
that VITA’s new space at Casa Abruzzo is a safe, inviting
and inclusive place where innovative services can be
shared and accessed by those who need them most.

Another step in the right direction
Donor Spotlight: The Longo Way
A commitment to freshness, quality and good service has made Longo’s a leader
in the grocery industry. But it’s the Longo family’s dedication to the
communities in which they work and live that has made them, and the people
they assist, greater of heart.
The Longo family’s philanthropic activities are vast and varied, including programs
that assist school age children through breakfast clubs, to charity golf
tournaments that raise much needed funds for various charities.
So when the Longo family recognized the need in the Italian-Canadian
community, they didn’t think twice about making a financial commitment to
Villa Charities.
“The Longo family chose to get involved with Villa Charities because we have
been long time corporate members of the community,” states Rosanne Maiurro
(neé Longo). “We recognized a large need and our family wanted to be able to
help address that need.”
The Longo Family’s pledge of $250,000 over 5 years to the Amore Campaign
will go a long way in the lives of the people Villa Charities serves on a daily
basis. Specifically, the Longo family’s pledge has been directed towards
Villa Colombo Vaughan. In recognition of this support, the dining room in the
advanced Alzheimer’s unit has been named after the family.
Whether it’s helping a senior live comfortably in familiar cultural surroundings,
teaching intellectually challenged adults life skills through VITA programs or
providing cultural and sports programs to thousands across the GTA at the
Columbus Centre, a donation to Villa Charities means so much to the families
in our community.
This sense of family is a virtue that has been passed on to the next generation of
Longos, who both work in the family business and carry on the giving spirit
that began with founders Gus, Tommy and Joe.
“We would encourage others to give to Villa Charities because we feel strongly
about giving back to the communities in which we live,” explains Maiurro.
“It is simply the right thing to do. Knowing that we can help families in even a
small way, helps us realize that we are making an impact in peoples lives.”

Everyday, residents have the luxury of enjoying the great
outdoors while playing a friendly game of bocce on the
courts located on the picturesque grounds.
A favourite Italian past-time lives on at Villa Colombo
Vaughan. Everyday, residents have the luxury of
enjoying the great outdoors while playing a friendly
game of bocce on the courts located on the picturesque
grounds.
The bocce courts were built thanks to a generous
donation by lago, the 5-star restaurant located at Eagles
Nest Golf Club. The funds were raised at the restaurant’s
annual Cigar Fundraiser and were given to Villa
Colombo Vaughan to help increase the already high
quality of life the residents enjoy.
The two courts are nestled within the property between
the building and the West Humber River. Residents
have access to the courts for friendly games of the
traditional Italian everyman sport – just one of the
many ways Villa Colombo Vaughan supports its
mandate of providing culturally sensitive care to the
Italian-Canadian community.
Situated on 160 acres in Kleinburg, Villa Colombo
Vaughan accepted its first resident in October 2006
and is the newest addition to the Villa Charities family
of organizations. Residents enjoy a beautiful and
soothing environment with upgraded accommodations
and lush gardens and courtyards. Residents visit with
their grandchildren in Piazza DeGasperis, enjoy an
afternoon espresso with friends and test their skill on
the bocce courts.
The popularity of the game at Villa Colombo Vaughan
has sparked many heated, albeit friendly, discussions
among residents and now a new tradition has started –
for the past couple of years, the staff and residents
organize an annual bocce tournament. Bocce-playing
guests include Villa Colombo Vaughan board members,
the Construction Committee and residents. Afterwards,
everyone comes together for light refreshments and the
winning team is awarded the trophy, and bragging
rights, for another year.

Our Signature Events
Our annual signature events are the cornerstone of fundraising for Villa
Charities Foundation. Net proceeds from our events help us to raise
much needed funds for the Villa Charities family of organizations.
Special events not only raise awareness of the work carried out by our
affiliates but also offer guests an opportunity to have fun in celebrated
Italian style. Our events also provide members of the business
community with unique opportunities to directly support causes close
to their corporate giving mission and vision while marketing to a target
audience.
In 2008, Villa Charities Foundation successfully raised $785,000
through various special events held throughout the year.
An Afternoon Affair
What better way to spend a leisurely afternoon than with the special
women in your life. Afternoon tea began centuries ago with the
gathering of high society women and is a tradition that continues today
with An Afternoon Affair – an event exclusively for women! An
Afternoon Affair aims to celebrate and embrace all that is wonderful
about being a woman – the ability to climb the corporate ladder while
caring for our families with the tenderness and simplicity of our
mothers and grandmothers. Guests enjoy traditional afternoon tea
while noted presenters educate guests on how to nurture the body, feed
the mind, and celebrate the spirit and beauty of women. The proceeds
from An Afternoon Affair are directed towards Villa Charities’ newest
daycare which opened at Casa Abruzzo in September 2008.
Team Villa
Villa Charities Foundation’s newest event, Team Villa, combines
fundraising with destination sport travel. Team Villa consists of walkers
and marathon runners of all levels who participate in marathons held
across Italy while raising funds and awareness for Villa Charities. Each
member of Team Villa is supported in their quest to achieve their
fundraising goal and provided the best in training to mentally and
physically prepare for their challenge. The team’s first destination was
the Rome Marathon in 2009 – and plans to attend the 25th anniversary
of the Venice Marathon in 2010 are already underway.
GIRO T.O.
Cycling with an Italian spin! Whether you ride for fun or for the thrill
of competition, Villa Charities Foundation’s fun-filled salute to Italy’s
famous Giro d’Italia is a bike tour not to be missed! Special highlights of
the Giro T.O. include a boot-shaped route riding through all of the
“Little Italys” in Toronto and Vaughan, rest stations featuring regional
Italian specialties, prizes, games, a post-ride BBQ and a few more
surprises along the way including the awarding of the Maglia Rosa to the
highest fundraiser.

Our Signature Events
Golf Tournament
FORE! With golf season comes the annual Villa Colombo Golf
Tournament! Held at a premier golf course in June. the tournament
offers golfers a day like no other in celebrated Italian style. Typical
Italian food and drink flow in equal abundance while each hole provides
entertaining games and contests to make it a fun and lively day. The
Villa Colombo Golf Tournament has been entertaining golf lovers for 32
successful years and has consistently proven to be amongst the most
popular events organized by Villa Charities Foundation.
The Venetian Ball
Glamour, style and elegance encapsulate the sensation that is The
Venetian Ball. It has grown to become the largest and most elegant
Italian-themed gala held each year in Toronto. For one night only, the
Venetian Ball perfectly captures the enchantment and drama of the
Venetian Carnevale. Guests embrace the spirit of the festival and enjoy
the masked revelry for which Venice is famous. This dazzling gala is an
authentic Italian celebration featuring exquisite food and drink, famous
faces, priceless auction items, as well as live entertainment from some of
the world’s best talents. In 2008, Villa Charities Foundation’s signature
event celebrated its 15th anniversary to much fanfare.
Heart & Hand Awards
Initiated in 1984, the Heart and Hand Awards take place every second
year and are presented by the Chair of each of the Villa Charities family
of organizations to one volunteer who has demonstrated dedication and
commitment above and beyond the call of duty. With thousands of
volunteers who dedicate themselves to Villa Charities every year, receipt
of the distinct and exclusive Heart and Hand remains the premiere
volunteer recognition across the Villa Charities family.

special events. All proceeds raised go towards programs that give more
amore to the seniors who cared for us, provide more invaluable job
training to young adults with intellectual disabilities and increase the
cultural programming that enriches the lives of thousands annually.

Third Party Events
Villa Charities Foundation is fortunate to have many corporate partners
who believe in our cause. Many companies know the importance of being
a good corporate citizen and giving back to the community. At Villa
Charities, we welcome the opportunity to lend our good charitable
reputation to an organization that is willing to help us raise funds, as we
help companies raise their profile in the community.
In 2008, approximately $37,065 was raised through third party events.
Here are some highlights:
Pizza Nova Golf Tournament
The Pizza Nova Golf Tournament marked its 13th year in 2008 and keeps
getting bigger every year. Over 240 golfers teed off on two golf courses
on June 10th and enjoyed a fun filled day of golf, socializing, networking
and fundraising. Thank you to the Primucci
family for raising $28,500 for the Villa Charities family.
KPMG Golf Tournament
Almost a decade ago, KPMG started organizing their own third party golf
tournament with proceeds to Villa Charities Foundation. The tournament
is a popular sporting event and has raised thousands of dollars for the
Villa Charities family of organizations. Thank you KPMG for raising
$4,500 for Villa Charities.
Pino Correale’s Mississauga
Half-Marathon
As part of his ongoing commitment to Villa Charities, Pino Correale
generously raised funds while participating in the Mississauga Half
Marathon in 2008. Fundraising while enjoying a favourite pastime is
something Pino continued as one of the founders of Team Villa – Villa
Charities Foundation’s newest event that was launched in 2009. Thank
you Pino for raising $4,065 for Villa Charities.

Ways to Give
Villa Charities needs your support. Every donation, whatever the
amount, is a real contribution that will enhance the quality of life for the

In Memory
Families are comforted in their sorrow by gifts made in memory of their
loved one. Acknowledgement cards are sent to inform them of your
thoughtfulness.
Tree of Life
The Tree of Life stands tall in the lobby of Villa Colombo Toronto. It is a
magnificent bronze and brass sculpture that allows individuals to pay
tribute to beloved family members and friends. For a gift of $1,000, a
leaf will be inscribed with the name of your choice. For a gift of $5,000,
the name will be inscribed on a rock.

LEGACY OF AMORE
Villa Charities is an exciting place to be right now, and our future is even brighter! We are about to celebrate 40 years of unparalleled
service to our community. What began as a home for the aged has evolved into 2 long term care facilities – Villa Colombo and Villa
Colombo Vaughan – providing culturally sensitive care for over 550 seniors; 32 group homes and 3 day programs for the intellectually
disabled through Vita Community Living Services & Mens Sana; 3 apartment buildings for over 1000 seniors living independently as well
as 3 full service daycares for our children.
But our work will not stop there. Over the next 20 years, there will be a 420% increase in the number of seniors in York Region alone,
with many coming from an Italian background and preferring culturally sensitive care to make their last years more comfortable and
dignified. With the recent closure of government run facilities, the number of individuals with intellectual disabilities waiting for access to
VITA and Mens Sana programs has increased significantly, and the need for daycare services continues to increase annually.
Please help us plan for the future and leave your own Legacy of Amore. Your support will ensure that every senior will enjoy a better life
during their last years, every individual with intellectual disabilities will be treated like one of our family and every child will benefit from
learning about their culture.
How can you help to make a difference?
Outright Gifts
A gift of cash is the easiest way to make an outright gift, but you may find it more advantageous to make a gift of securities or personal
property. You can tailor your gift to fit the immediate needs of Villa Charities. We would be happy to work with you and your advisors to
plan your gift in the most tax-advantaged way.
Bequests
You have the opportunity to create a personal legacy of caring, regardless of your financial situation, by including Villa Charities
Foundation in your will. It gives you an estate tax deduction for the value of your bequest. A bequest also gives you flexibility in providing
for family needs first.
Life Insurance
Should you desire to give a larger gift to Villa Charities Foundation than you are currently able to make, purchasing a life insurance policy
is a way to accomplish that goal. You can make a significant gift with little expenditure. A gift of an old or new policy gives immediate
income tax deduction for the gift’s value, plus possible estate tax savings.
Retirement Plans
You may have built wealth in your RRSP and other retirement plans. If a non-spouse is the beneficiary of a retirement plan, these assets
may be subject to both estate and income taxes. In addition, your retirement dollars may be exposed to generation skipping transfer taxes
before reaching the non-spousal beneficiary. Such taxes also apply if you are unmarried. To avoid this, the best way to donate may be from
your retirement plan which preserves the plan’s value and allows you to leave heirs less costly bequests.

Treasurer’s Message
November 2009
The Foundation’s 2008 financial statements are certified by KPMG. The results of operations show a lower excess
of revenues ($1.5 million) over expenses compared to 2007.
On the revenue side this is mostly explained by the receipt in 2007 of one-time pledges from the Amore capital
campaign for the construction of Villa Colombo Vaughan. In 2008 our special events, mostly through the Venetian
Ball, saw an increase in revenue of $243,000.
Our expenses increased $205,000 mostly in support of the higher revenues incurred for the Venetian Ball. There
was a modest increase ($25,000) in administrative expenses over last year; showing cost control efforts by staff.
The Foundation’s objective is to support, through Villa Charities Inc., the programmes of the Villa Charities
Group. These include services for long-term care, independent living for seniors, adults with developmental disabilities
and other community initiatives. In 2008, the Foundation transferred $860,000 to Villa Charities Inc. for
this purpose.
As noted in note 11 of our 2008 audited statements, there are approximately $4.5 million in pledges still to be
collected on the Amore campaign. These funds have been raised in support of Villa Colombo Vaughan; mostly
through the efforts of Mr. Fred De Gasperis and his family. Future transfers to Villa Charities Inc. will take place
as these funds are collected to help pay for the Group’s equity portion in Villa Colombo Vaughan located in the
Di Poce Centre.
As you can see, philanthropy is a critical source of funding for Villa Charities Foundation. Philanthropy, which
includes private donations from individuals, families, corporations and foundations, enables Villa Charities to make
needed improvements to our facilities and programs. It allows Villa Charities to continue to share our culture and
provide culturally sensitive care to residents today. Thank you – grazie – for your philanthropy.
Almost 40 years ago, our community came together to build a legacy of love with the construction of Villa
Colombo Toronto. As we embark on the next phase of our Capital Campaign to support the upgrades it needs
to meet standards and improve the care provided to residents, we are asking the community to come together
again and assist us as we take the steps required to ensure that our tradition of culturally sen sitive care continues
in the future.
